Images distort while editing

Seems like I can't really edit any images with iphoto's built in image editing feature. Trying to rotate, remove red eye etc always distorts the image to this:
http://arasola.fi/ilife09.gif
Has anyone bumped into something similar?

Upgraded to Snow Leopard, using iPhoto 8.1 (415).
Problem: Scanned numerous photographs at color 600 dpi on Canon Pixma500, then exported scans to jpeg, then imported into iPhoto
Result: Many will not edit. Here are the symptoms:
(1) Using full screen edit, the screen becomes blank.
(2) If while screen blank, "resize" slide is moved, then small preview screen shows up, with the thumbnail in it, but still major edit screen is blank.
(3) On some photos, if choose "crop" then entire photo will show up, but some will jump back to their original size, even after being cropped.
(4) Some images show up in the edit window, but will simply not edit, e.g., no sharpness, saturation or any other change will appear.
(5) For photo that is cropped, and then "jumps back" to its original size, an export file to tiff and re-import of the tiff shows a cropped file.
(6) For some photos, if the crop is a non-standard dimension (custom), then instead of cropping the image, iPhoto actually distorts it! For example if a photo was cropped into a 1 by 7 strip, the image would stretch out into that small strip.
(7) Exporting to tiff and then re-importing to edit does not work for color photos.
(8) same problem occurs for scanned (600 dpi) black and white photos.
(9) Attempts to edit older photos imported from iPhone, which previous before Snow had beed editable, failed, with the same results.
(10) Reading the discussions, there is plenty of discussion on this. The following do NOT appear to have any effect on the problem: (1) rebuilding the iPhoto library, (2) doing crazy stuff like reinstalling the system, (3) building a new Preferences file, (4) Building a new library, (5) using a back up copy of the photos.
Conclusion: Upgrade to Snow Leopard has temporarily destroyed ability if iPhoto to edit.

  • Images disappear while editing

I've been experiencing disappearing images in Aperture while editing. Images just turn to white, black or grey while editing and nothing can be done short of a restart to recover them. Sometimes resizing the window or selecting a different tool can bring the image back temporarily - this is very frustrating.
For reference I'm using Aperture on a G5 dual 2ghz with 2.5gb ram. Images have been captured with Canon 5D and 20D cameras in raw format.
    Anybody else experience similar problems?
    Thanks in advance.

I'm suddenly experiencing the same issue. After importing RAW images successfully from my Canon 5D, if I try to make any adjustments at all, the new "gray box" for the new version appears, but nothing ever appears in it and my adjustment tools all become grayed out and cannot be used.
Unlike some of the other posters however, restarting Aperture has not corrected the problem. After three days of trying, I am unable to use Aperture to modify any images.
In fact, once this happens, even unmodified RAW images will not finish loading in the viewer window. Even switching projects will not fix the issue. If anyone figures out a work around, I would be appreciative. Until then I'm back once again to Bridge and Photoshop for all my photo editing.

  • Major screen/graphics distortion while editing in iPhoto.  Any ideas?

    Hi there,
I have a 13" MacBook Pro purchased in late 2011.  We bought the computer specifically for photo editing, as I have a DSLR camera.  The issues with iPhoto started almost immediately after the computer was purchased.  Here's what happens - I'll be editing in iPhoto (usually within the "adjust tab", not quick fixes).  After a few minutes, iPhoto starts seriously dragging, I get the wheel, then I start getting super crazy graphics distortions, but just within the iPhoto screen.  A few more minutes of this, iPhoto usually crashes (in rare cases, it takes down the entire system).  First I had the hard drive replaced.  No dice - problems persisted.  Then Apple replaced the logic board including the video/graphics card.  Still no luck.  I took it in again a week ago, and they are stumped.  They are apparently working with their engineering team and looking at "logs" (?) but it doesn't sound hopeful.  They tell me anything that could be hardware-related has been ruled out, but it's still happening.
    System stats:
Mac OS X Lion version 10.7.5
    2.8 GHz Intel Core i7
Has anyone had similar issues or hear of anything like this before??

First off the 13" Late 2011 Mac notebooks don't really have a add-on Graphics Card in them. They use the Intel HD 3000 graphics chip that is included in the Intel CPU. So I would guess when Apple said they change the graphic card they meant that the graphic system was changed with the logic board and the CPU.
Also the 13" MBPs aren't that great for Photo editing because of the Intel HD 3000 graphic system. But then I do run Photoshop CS5 and Lightroom 4 on a Dell notebook that only has the Intel graphics and I have never had either program crash or give flaky graphic distortions.
I suggest you try Adobe Lightroom, Adobe has a free 30 day trial of it, and see if the same things happen. If Lighroom does the same things then it is hardware related in some way. If Lightroom doesn't crash and or give distorted graphics then it is something to do with iPhoto.
I personally don't use iPhoto as I already own Lightroom and Photoshop.
Lightroom is a very powerfull image editing program and a very good image cataloging and management program all rolled up into one package

While using Adobe contribute to edit and update my website, all the images dissipear when I click "edit page" on one specific pages. It also moves everything to the left of the page.. this does not happen when editing the other pages.
Anyone know what would cause this and how to fix it?

  • Images distorted when editing in iphoto .... software or hardware?

I posted in an iphoto 5 forum post about this and wanted to check here to see if anyone has any ideas about it, as well.
    here's that discussion:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1502109&tstart=0
I am getting these purplish lines/blotches in my images when I move the editing sliders in iphoto 5.
This is what the images look like before I edit (notice the faint geometric patterns throughout the entire image)
and this is what happens after
as is covered in the other thread I have rebuilt the library, repaired permissions, deleted preferences, tried creating a new account, and reinstalled iphoto 5 to no avail.
Here's the wildcard .... I recently had a logic board failure and it was replaced. This is actually the 3rd new board, the first two that they installed were defective(!) Could it be the logic board or video board causing this to happen? It only happens in iphoto and only when the edit sliders are moved.
Do you think that doing an archive and erase could fix this?
Does an archive and erase delete preferences/passwords/settings and the like?
    Thanks in advance
    Henry

To follow up, yesterday I phoned Apple Care and arranged to take my imac to the repair center.
That done, here is my issue, this will be logic board number 4 since mid March. Initially, I took the unit in and a board was ordered. That board was determined bad before I got the machine back and another board was ordered. That board was determined to be faulty, as well. A third board was installed and I got my imac back. Within a few days I noticed intermittent video patterning and random freezeups as described in this topic. I followed all of the suggestions that were given and determined another bad logic board.
This morning I called Customer Relations as has been suggested in many of the threads that I have researched here. The representative was very thorough and cordial, as well as understanding. He ultimately decided that since the machine worked well for 2+ years and only started malfunctioning 2 months ago, that I should take it in to Apple Service one more time for another logic board. It sort of made sense to me, but I was hoping that he would offer a replacement since this is logic board number 4 being replaced. (albeit in a short period of time) He did say that if this one went bad that they would probably relpace the machine (this was not overly reassuring to me)
Are my expectations too high or am I being unreasonable? Should I have been more insistent? Is his decision final, or can I call back and ask for an "appeal"?
Do I actually even have cause to ask for a replacement machine?
Thanks for putting up with my frustration.

  • Animated GIF image gets distorted while playing.

    Hi,
I have some animated gif images which I need to show in a jLabel and a jTextPane. But some of these images are getting distorted while playing in the two components, though these images are playing properly in Internet Explorer. I am using the methods insertIcon() of jTextPane and setIcon() of jLabel to add or set the gif images in the two components. Can you please suggest any suitable idea of how I can get rid of this distortion? Thanks in advance.

In the code below is a self contained JComponent that paints a series of BufferedImages as an animation. You can pause the animation, and you specify the delay. It also has two static methods for loading all the frames from a File or a URL.
Feel free to add functionality to it, like the ability to display text or manipulate the animation. You may wan't the class to extend JLabel instead of JComponent. Just explore around with the painting. If you have any questions, then feel free to post.
The downside to working with an array of BufferedImages, though, is that they consume more memory then a single Toolkit gif image.

While editing a scanned pdf, Acrobat will not recognize the current font & change to very different font. How can I choose the font I want to match the current document?

Thanks for answering. The version is XI.0.10. I just did the update yesterday hoping that I could now properly edit a scanned pdf document. Yes, it's happening on most all scanned documents. I followed your steps & found the list of fonts used in the document & then attempted to edit. The same occurs. When I type in a correction, I get an error alert... "the original font (in this case Fd 5805) is not available or can't be used in editing. Acrobat is using the font Minion Pro in its place."
When I select the text & right click as you suggested, my only choices are cut, copy, delete or select all, no "edit text".
I have no other options to choose another font. Thanks for any help you can direct my way.

  • Photo file names not seen in PSE 12 editor while editing

How can I see the file name of a photo while editing in Photoshop Element 12?

Thanks for the answer.  However the name shows only when in the Expert mode not the Quick or Guided modes.
I note that in the Expert mode only the relative size of the image on screen is shown as a percent in the lower right corner.  That is where I am used to see that in the PSE 9.

  • While editing photos in Aperture, I'm trying to make an "auto" adjustment to the exposure but the button is grayed out and consequently doesn't perform any function, please help! Thank you, Mike

While editing photos in Aperture, I trying to make an "auto" adjustment to the exposure,
but the "auto" button is grayed out and will not allow any auto function to take place.
    Please help!
    Thank you,
    Mike

Mike, are you working with raw images?
For some raw images auto exposure is not available, have a look at this manual page:
    http://documentation.apple.com/en/aperture/usermanual/index.html#chapter=18%26se ction=9%26tasks=true
Note: Automatic exposure adjustment is available for Aperture-supported RAW images only. If you want to adjust the exposure of another file type, such as JPEG or TIFF, see Working with the Exposure Controls. For a list of supported RAW file types, go to the Apple website at http://www.apple.com/aperture/specs.

In the System log when filtering for iPhoto I see a bunch of this sort of thing and have no clue as to what it may or may not mean:
Mar 13 20:58:55 iMac-60.local WindowServer[125]: disable_update_likely_unbalanced: UI updates still disabled by application "iPhoto" after 15.00 seconds (server forcibly re-enabled them after 1.00 seconds). Likely an unbalanced disableUpdate call.

I've run Disc Repair from recovery partition recently but suspect I may need to revisit that.
My next step I suppose is also to reinstall the OS from recovery partition. Does that wipe user data? Does it replace user settings and logins etc?
Following that all that is left is reformat, reinstall OS, and replace user files from backup.
I've been trying to learn from all the input in this valuable thread. Manhy thanks to all. The common ground points to my GeForce card, anyone else with the 130 out there?
    What am I missing? Anything?
Thanks again for the shared knowledge!

    CookieDuster.
I think you are on the right track. It does look bad for your graphics chip.
Re-Installing Mac OS X on a drive without pre-existing flaws will not overwrite User files. But it would be prudent to:
    • Have good backups anyway.
    • Run Disk Utility ( Repair Disk ) as a precaution. ( Verify disk ) will suffice Provided it does not find any faults to be repaired.
    What have I missed?
Yours is an iMac and most of the rest on this thread are MacBook Pro or Mac Pro.

  • Aperture crashes while editing. Exception Type:  EXC_BAD_ACCESS (SIGSEGV)

Hi! First, Aperture began to fail while editing, all the time. I repaired the library a lot of times, also repair permissions and move the library to a external HD for working with a new library. Nothing worked. I also did a test on my computer and the memory seems fine.
    I'm using Aperture 3.4.3 and I have a 13-inch, mid 2012 MacBook Pro Version 10.7.5, 2.5 Ghz Intel Core i5, 4 GB 1600 MHz DDR3.
I copy the error message below, thanks!

Dear Léonie, I'm editing some pictures for work, so I tried them in my original library and then in another one, and It crashed anyway. So, I think that may be is a corrupt file issue in my work photos. Today I worked relatively well, with those photos in a new library, and only failed 3 times (before the faults were thousands!). Every time, before and now, It's crashes when I'm editing, mainly while using brushes. I work with RAW files, so they're very large images, and I have no plug-in installed.
Dear Frank, as I said to Leonie, I imported my files back into a new library and keeps crashing. I'll try to create a new user and run Aperture. What is the use of that?
    Thank you both!
PS: I think there might be a corrupt file, because one of the times it crashed the photo I was workig on appeared like this (attached here) when I restarted the program.

  • Aperture-3 hangs and the system too, while editing in 100%

I am not sure about other people have the same issue,
Just wanted to explore if any of you have / had the same issue.
I use Macbook Pro 13" (i5 & 4GB RAM), Recently installed aperture-3 from mac store.
I usually shoot in RAW and do the rest with app-3.
In recent days, my aperture and my system hands while editing any RAW image, mostly while using brushes (for sharpening / polarization).
Coincidentally or not, it happened all the times when i have the pis in 100% zoom-in condition.
If you experienced similar issues please share and let know hoe you resolved it... Also requesting experts in this group to throw some light on this subject.
    Thanks in advance
    Munish

    Hello munish,
I'd try some diagnostics first, before you reinstall.
    Macbook Pro 13" (i5 & 4GB RAM)
I had the same setup as you - it worked great with Snowleopard, but as soon as I upgraded to Lion Aperture was running at a snail's pace and completely useless. I added 4 GB RAM and all was back to normal. Also, if your harddrive is very full, performance may go down. Keep at least 10% of your drive empty. How full is your disk right now?
To check if RAM might be an issue on your machine, start the Activity monitor (Applications -> Utilities) and look at the memory usage while Aperture is running. Don't run any other apps simultaniously, that are heavy on RAM, like Safari.
And run a hardware check: Using Apple Hardware Test: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1509
If you cannot find a hardware problem - hopefully not! try the usual trouble shooting measures in turn, for corruption of some files in your Aperture Library may cause similar symptoms, see Aperture 3: Troubleshooting Basics: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3805
If you want to reinstall Aperture as described in the post that Nilsemann pointed to - since you installed your Aperture from the AppStore - then you need to enter the following command in a Terminal window after cleaning the libraries before you reinstall Aperture:
         Sudo pkgutil -forget com.apple.pkg.GarageBand
That will ensure that all recent update packages will be deactivated and you can update the newly installed installed Aperture.app again to the most recent version. You will be prompted for your admin password when you enter the command.
    Regards
    Léonie

  • Jerky playback, sluggish operations while editing

I've never had any troubles with video until now. I'm getting jerky playback on my machine, where under the previous iMovie I didn't. The playback display will freeze and skip, while the vertical red place marker pauses and jumps forward. The video doesn't have sound at this point, so I don't know if sound is skipping. I'm running on a 30" Cinema display with iMovie filling the screen.
When I take actions, such as clicking on a clip, there's a slight pause before the action happens. Scrolling through video to find the right frame to split on is very sluggish.
The type of video that I'm editing are screen movies created using Snapz Pro X (http://www.ambrosiasw.com/utilities/snapzprox/) at 30fps, saved as MP4's highest quality. Yes, it's a lot more space, but I like to preserve as much quality as possible through the editing process.
Activity Monitor shows that I have 266MB of RAM free, so I don't believe I'm running into swapping problems. At the suggestion of an Apple Store employee, I had an authorized Apple repair place upgrade the hard drive (to 7200RPM; weeee!) a year ago since they don't do after-market upgrades.
I've used iDefrag to defrag the filesystem. I'm maxed out on RAM (2GB; first generation MBP).
What types of things should I be looking for to get smooth playback while editing?

I doubt if any card works well with CS5.
It's best to have an Adobe PC without any video signal card.
    1. Use a capture/playout PC to capture and view the images, preferably also without using any Adobe software.
    2. Then do your stuff on the Adobe PC.
    3. Transfer the mixdown of the video to your capture/playout PC, check the field order and print to tape (without Adobe) or deliver the file.
For now, Matrox MXO2 is also unusable with CS5. Boris FX makes things even worse.
My PC is extremely powerfull, so that can't be it, but it's very unstable.
Manufacturers of cards and Adobe don't work hard enough to combine their products and they just blame eachother.
It used to be quite nice semi-pro stuff for editing but forget that with any video hardware for the time being; it dropped to amateur level.
I'm done trying to fix it or waiting for solutions; I just issue warnings for other users and buyers now.

  • While editing a document,Pages goes into beachball mode, and quit

While editing a document,Pages goes into beachball mode, and quit.  Cannot retrieve edits

Is it just one particular document or any document?
If just one document I'd guess there is some corruption in the document, usually a font or an image.
If it is all documents, the corruption likely lies in the Pages preferences. Go to HD > Users > (your account) > Library > Preferences, delete the com.apple.iwork.pages.plist file & then restart Pages. In Finder, hold down the Option key while clicking on the Go menu & your user Library will appear about halfway down the list.

    Hi,
I think, Package ZBI_NEW  is a custom development package: probably someone else already transported the application component hierarchy and assigned this package...try to change this. Chk with SE80 > package > ZBI_NEW,If it is not there, create it.
But the normal practice is change/Edit DSO in DEV-->Quality , then transport to Production.(SE80
In the drop down, look for Packages, below it type ZBI_* and hit Open.If you don't see ZBI_NEW, then ask BASIS to Create (DEV)and import that Package to QAS->Production)
