Images going black
I use a Dual G5 2.5GHz with 2 GB ram. I shoot my images with a Nikon D200 in raw format. The G5 has a ATI Rad9800 XT with 256 MB DDR using a 23 inch Apple display. I have two internal 250GB 7200rpm drives plus 3 external 250GB LaCie drives.
I'm running the latest version of OSX.
Ever since I upgraded to Aperture 1.2 I have been experiencing images going black after I have been working for 5-10 minutes and using the crop tool or even the exposure tool. I thought version 1.5 would eliminate the problem.
Is it my system? Should I add more ram? De-frag the hard drive?
Do I have to upgrade my video card?
Could all of my external firewire drives be causing any problems?
(Maybe I should try Aperture with all of the drives off ??)
It's just getting a little frustrating having a lot of images to work with and then running into the blacked out image with high regularity.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated !
I also have the same problem (Dual 2.0GHz G5 with 2.5GB RAM and Radeon 9650 gfx card at 1920x1200 res screen - all my photos are RAW Canon 20D).
It almost seems like a problem with how the graphics card handles it's image overlays. I find the black image will often appear if I try and switch between images before the previous one has completed its display adjustments (i.e. the status monitor is still showing heavy CPU usage). I find that clicking and slightly resizing the display window shows the photo again until I let go of the mouse button, at which point it goes black again. Sometimes instead of black I have a solid grey fill instead.
Once the black image effect has started I also find that the handles when resizing an image or text area in the photo book editor disappear.
I also find though that the loupe tool never seems affected so I often end up using that for a while rather than having to restart Aperture again!

Cropping bug: part of image goes black
A strange problem which cropped up after installing 3.2, and remains after re-installing 3.2.
When I go to crop a vertical image, the top 1/3 of the image goes black. I can still select what I want (guessing for the border in the black part) and, when I complete the crop, I get the whole image I want, with no black.
Interestingly, if I rotate the vertical to horizontal, I can crop with no black part. So I can use that to crop, and then rotate back to vertical. But there's clearly a bug here.
Any suggestions? You are probably experiencing the crop and or onscreen proofing bug that was introduced with AP 3.2 update. It is summarized well in the posts on this page:
http://www.apertureexpert.com/
We need to wait for Apple to fix this one (or you can look at some of the other posts in this forum for reverting back to 3.1.3 until the fix is issued). -
Image goes black after levels adjustment
I've recently been using the Aperture Trial and have ran into a problem where the image in the Viewer will go black after I make a levels adjustment to the image.
It will show the image when I go into full-screen, but it won't show it in the Viewer window.
Has anyone else had an issue with this?
JTI have a cautionary report about this bug - I really did not see it much myself, but after the last OS update I have seen images go black two times when editing on a Macbook Pro.
Going full screen and back did not fix the problem - the few times I had it happen in the past, I could simply apply some adjustment (like exposure) and remove the adjustment and the image would also be fine. In this case however I had to restart Aperture to be able to see the image again.
I'll also file a bug report. -
I am working in Pro CS3. It's a HP 1.8 with 2 gig of RAM. I keep importing still pictures in different projects (different pictures in different projects). They keep coming up black. They do recover or if you click on them enough they do come back that way. Is it a RAM issue or settings. I can't seem to find the solution.
Thanks,
SteveAs well as size, I have read that pictures created by a device that puts "extra" information in the file header won't work well... solution is the same as Jim gave, open in a known good photo editor and resave so the extra header information is stripped away

Hello,
I have a FLV video playing through the Media Display
componet, however, when the video is finished playing, the image
goes black. I've tried reseting the video, adding an extra frame at
the end of the FLV video, moving the componet off the stage when
finished...nothing seems to work. How can I get rid of this black
box?
Thanks,
-DanNickels55,
Thank you so much for weighing in on this. I really
appreciate it.
I've put the.swf on the web along with a quicktime version to
show how the players handle the video differently. I'm hoping to
emulate the quicktime way of doing things. Basically, the quicktime
player stops the video at the end and leaves the playhead there -
which is nice if you want the final frame to integrate seemlesly
with the site. The flash player is moving the playhead back to the
beginning of the video. That's what I hope to stop. I'd like to see
the playhead stay on the last frame.
You can see the two videos
HERE. But I warn
you, it's obnoxious having two of the same video on one page, so
turn the speakers down. Yuck.
Thanks so much for your willingness to look into this!!!!!!!!

I get just a few seconds of video on my HDTV before it goes black.
I have a Mac Mini G4 1.25 with a DVI output. I recently bought a Belkin DVI-HDMI cable, which I used to connect it to a Panasonic 42" plasma TV. It worked fine for about 5 minutes (with a little overscan, but hey) and then the image started to sort of ripple and ended up going black. When I reboot, I can see the booting process in the TV, but as soon as it's going to show the desktop the image goes black. It works fine with an LCD monitor using the VGA converter.
Any ideas? At first I thought it was the cable, but I find it odd that it consistently works for 1-2 minutes.
Thanks for any help.
Antonio.Yes, this was a common topic on these forums back with the G4 minis were current. The problem has to do with an obscure detail in the mini's spec relating to digital video that says the attached display must be of the coherent TMDS type in order for DVI to work above certain pixel clock frequencies. You can read it here in the following link. Search that page for the word "coherent".
http://support.apple.com/kb/sp65
Probably your attached TV has a non-coherent receiver in it and the pixel clock is above 135 MHz for the timing being applied. The solution that worked in most cases was to use SwitchResX and lower the pixel clock to 135 MHz or less. That generally did the trick. -
Photo goes black when editing it
Hi,
I acknowledge this is a fairly common matter, but let me try to share my on experience.
For the past few days, I have been importing photos in my iPhoto library either from .jpg docs or brand new ones from my digital camera.
Each time I try to edit one of those, the image goes black. Surprisingly, if I try to crop a picture, the image comes back to view !?
I have unsuccessfully tried to:
- repair iPhoto library permissions
- reconstruct library
using the Cmd+alt keys when lauching iPhoto.
I have NEVER experienced such a painful behaviour in the past, as I have to go back and forth between the editing and normal modes to see the results of my editing.
Any educated advice would be appreciated.
Mac mini Core 2 Duo - 2 Go RAM - OS X 10.7.5 - iPhoto 9.4.1The fact that you can edit those photos and get them to display correctly via a new, modified file indicates that the originals are damaged somehow.
Select one of the thumbnails and use the File ➙ Reveal in Finder ➙ Original menu option to take you to the original file located inside the library. Copy the file to the desktop and try the following:
1 - download Convert to JPG and Embed sRGB profile from Toad's Cellar and unzip it.
2 - drag the file from the desktop onto the application.
3 - import the converted files into iPhoto and see if it appears as it should.
If the above works you could run it on each file in the library. Unfortunately you would have to open each subfolder in the Masters folder and drag the files onto the application. That will be a lot of manual work. -
Lightning effects going black?
Hey everyone!
I have photoshop CC and when I enter lightning effects my image goes black and the lightning effects are not doing much. Will add screenshot.
What am I doing wrong?
Kind regards,
NocI did update it now and it is still the same problem. Maby my videocard is to bad? Got Nvidia GEforce DT 740M is that enough?
This is really bugging me since I work alot with the light in my pictures... -
The screen on my MacBook goes black often. I can still see a faint image of what's on the screen, and can only get it to illuminate by moving it back and forth. What could the issue be? How can it be fixed?
The startup disk may need repairing ...
Launch Disk Utility located in HD > Applications > Utilities
Select the startup disk on the left then select the First Aid tab.
Click: Verify Disk (not Verify Disk Permissions)
If the disk needs repairing, restart your Mac while holding down the Command + R keys. From there you can access the built in utilities in OS X Recovery to repair the startup disk. -
I am trying to hook my macbook pro to a projector, which has a VGA cable. I bought a VGA to HDMI adapter, but whenever I hook it up, the screen on my macbook just goes black and I can't make it do anything else or even show up on the projector.
My laptop is still on; it just has a black screen that I can't get rid of without shutting down the computer by holding the power button.Hey there lynmrigg,
It sounds like have an HDMI to VGA adapter connecting your MacBook Pro and your projector but the screen on your computer goes black and no image appears on the projector. I would use the troubleshooting in the following article to help resolve or isolate the issue here, named:
Apple computers: Troubleshooting issues with video on internal or external displays
Try unplugging the video adapter or cable and then plug it back in.
If more than one video adapter is in use (or "daisy-chained"), troubleshoot by using only one adapter.
Example: A mini DisplayPort to DVI adapter connected to a DVI to HDMI adapter is an unsupported configuration because there is a series of adapters in use.
If available, try using a different display and or adapter (or use a different connector by using DVI instead of VGA, for instance).
Reset the system
You can reset the Mac's parameter RAM and SMC.
Reset the resolution
Start by resetting the Mac's parameter RAM. If the display does not come up, was previously set to an unsupported resolution, and still results in no video:
Start up in Safe Mode.
From the Apple () menu, choose System Preferences.
Choose Displays from the View menu to open the preferences pane.
Select any resolution and refresh rate that your display supports.
Restart your computer.
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.
Take care,

My iPhoto goes black when I try to open a photo
I am running OS 10.7.5 and iPhoto 11 9.4.3 on an iMac. Yesterday I uploaded 620 photos into iPhoto. They worked perfectly and I was able to go through all of them after uploading. I did not close iPhoto last night but minimized it to the dock. Today when I tried to open a photo from the thumbnail, the screen went black. All my albums do the same thing. The first image clicked on comes up on the screen. Then it goes black and then nothing I do will bring up another image.
I restarted iPhoto but that did not help.Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Repair Database. If that doesn't help, then try again, this time using Rebuild Database.
If that fails:
Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. (In early versions of Library Manager it's the File -> Rebuild command. In later versions it's under the Library menu.)
This will create an entirely new library. It will then copy (or try to) your photos and all the associated metadata and versions to this new Library, and arrange it as close as it can to what you had in the damaged Library. It does this based on information it finds in the iPhoto sharing mechanism - but that means that things not shared won't be there, so no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your events, albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

Yesterday upon startup for the first time the screen went black. Had to do a force shutdown. Unplugged all external devices. Reset everything as well. Slowly checked everything was on the phone with Apple even during the process. Seemed to correct the issue. Then of course I get off the phone, restarted my computer and it goes black randomly again.
Rebooted fine. Checked all my hard disks internal and external, verified and repaired permissions on main drive and clone. Since then nothing yet...But I still feel its either the Video Card or the Monitor as everything else is fully operational.
I plan on taking it in to look at as my applecare is up in November but I cant point my finger on it. And really am trying to avoid lugging the mac pro and monitor in at the same time...(Not the easiest thing with lack of parking in nyc..)
If the display was dying I feel like it would have konked out already.
The funny thing is I have had to replace video cards and monitors in the past but this time I cant quite figure out what the **** is going on.
I am leaning towards the video card as I noticed it flickered a little when opening plug in windows in pro tools or multiple windows in sfari but it doesnt make sense.
Worst part is I cant do a hardware test cause for some reason this computer doesnt have the software installed. It does nothing when I hold down the D button...
I totally baffled but the randomness of this. -
Photoshop CC 2014 - my workspace keeps going black
- When working in Photoshop CC 2014 - my workspace keeps going black while i'm trying to work on an image. For example, this morning I was simply trying to add some text to an image using layers but while typing the text in the workspace (the actual image) goes completely black and I have to either click out of it or wait for the image to come back so that I can see what I'm doing. Having used various versions of Photoshop I know this is not normal. Can anyone suggest what my issue could be.
Your graphics card drivers need to be updated.
Here's how:
Upgrade Display Drivers
Windows OS
Click Start.
On the Start menu, click Run.
In the Open box, type "dxdiag" (without the quotation marks), and then click OK.
The DirectX Diagnostic Tool opens. Click the Display tab.
On the Display tab, information about your graphics card is shown in the Device section. You can see the name of your card, as well as how much video memory it has.
Once you know the kind of graphics card you have, visit the manufacturer's website to download the latest driver. Here are links for downloading drivers from the most common graphics card manufacturers:
NVIDIA: http://www.nvidia.com/content/drivers/drivers.asp
AMD: http://support.amd.com/en-us/download
Intel: http://support.intel.com/support/graphics/ -
Monitor enlarges display unexpectedly and goes black
I have had my preferences set for a long time, for display to 'sleep' after 5 min. Recently for no reason while I am working with mouse or keyboard, monitor will enlarge the screen image as it goes black.
Sometimes, I can turn the monitor off and then back on to resolve the issue.
Other times, I have to turn the monitor off and on 3-4 times.
If that doesn't work, I have to push the shut down button on the PowerMac,
and then push it right back on.
Recently, I also got a message to set date and time manually as these were prior to current date. Someone has replied to that issue that a failing pram battery could be the cause.
Could the battery be affecting function of the monitor as well?
How can I troubleshoot the problem?I assume that the display is a CRT-type and not an LCD. From your description of the picture enlarging and then the display going black, I'd suspect a problem with the flyback transformer, which is responsible for producing/regulating the high voltage that drives the screen. Needing to repeatedly power OFF/ON the display to bring the screen back would support this diagnosis. Because of the shock hazard associated with diagnosing/repairing this portion of a CRT display, a trained professional should do it. It would be less expensive to replace it with a flat-screen display, than pay for the repair.

For the past week or so, I've had to move the power plug around to get the laptop to charge. I determined that it's not the cable, but is the internal part. Today, when I opened the lid to bring the laptop out of sleep mode, my desktop displayed for a second or two, and then went blank. I've re-started several times, removed the battery and held the power button, but it doesn't help. Originally, it would go blank as soon as Windows started to load, so I tried Safe Mode, with the same result. Now, when I turn on the laptop, I might see the HP logo and/or the blinking cursor, and then the screen goes black.
I hooked it up to an external monitor, which worked, until I tried to uninstall the display driver, in hopes that it would correct itself, now I don't get anything on the external monitor either.
I suspect that it must be the graphics card, but not sure. One other thing that happened occasionally, if I bumped the side of the laptop, near the HDMI and USB ports on the left side of the laptop, against something metal, the screen would go black for a split second. Seemed like an electric short.
Thank you for any help you can provide. I'm okay with replacing parts, although not my favorite. I did replace the keyboard with the lighted keyboard a year ago. That's too bad that the lamps are gone, but here are some alternatives.

The new screen is probably the best way to go, but removing it from the bezel is a challenge, after the hinges are removed, the screen is still held in there with this double sides sticky tape. If you use a very hot hair drier, starting at one of the upper corners, the adhesive can be softened enough to begin prying the bezel away from the screen. It takes awhile for the hair dryer to soften the adhesive so give yourself lots of time for this procedure.
When the new screen is installed it's very difficult to get every last crumb of debris out from under the bezel, so keep this in mind.
Another option is to replace the bulbs, I tried this ounce on an old screen that I didn't care about and it did not go well. I could not separate the parts that were taped together without damaging them. This would be the least expensive way to go if you can remove the bulbs.
I am also assuming that it's the 1920 X 1080 screen with the dual lamp arrangement _ some of them used screen with lower resolution with one CCFL lamp. (Yours is probably the dual lamp assembly)
There is also a used complete screen assembly available on e-bay, but eventually it may succumb to you fate in a few days or a few years, there is no way of knowing.
The part number for the complete display assembly is 498166-001 and it is available from HP, but it's expensive.

The other thing that I have not mentioned is that it may a faulty cable, perhaps the wires that supply the voltage to the inverter board have become internally frayed. This is a common occurrence, but usually this also effects the picture as well.
Here is the part number for the cable 496876-001. These can be found on e-bay and some of them are new.
