Images importing with a NTSC timebase in PAL projects

Importing a series of jpeg images (various sizes) into a PAL project is resulting in the clips created having a NTSC timebase (Video Rate of 29.97fps). Not a big problem, but annoying as a clip that is set to 3:12 goes onto the timeline with a duration of 3:10.
Has anyone else had this happen?

When you say : «bad idea not to export at least a master in full res» how can I do this ?
What I meant was that for EVERY single project you work on you should always at the end export a QT movie self-contained with same settings as a Master.
So that is something to do next time you edit and complete a project, for this particular situation you posted about I told you already what to do.

  • Authoring a DVD for both PAL & NTSC regions - convert pal project to ntsc?

    Hello gurus
I have programmed and built a DVD in DVDSP for PAL regions. But my cleint has come back to me and asked for an NTSC version.
I have re-encoded all assets for NTSC but am now struggling to find a simple way to convert the programming. DVDSP is asking me to remove all assets and menus and basically re-programme the whole disk again...
Do any of you peeps have any quick fixes???
    Thank you in advance
    Jay

There is no reason why you can't save the PAL project as a new project - NTSC version - then take out all the assets that are video (and therefore PAL) then change the project to NTSC settings. This way the basic structure is there - you will need to reconnect stuff etc and you may find that buttons you have created "disappear" from the menu screens (due to the different frame size of NTSC and PAL)
I have done this in the past where projects had scripts and the like and were fairly complex - it's not ideal but might save some time in redoing the project

  • Ntsc dvd from pal project

I am working in an off-line HD PAL project (at DNxHD 36) on Avid Media Composer and I need to create a SD DVD to send to the US. I exported my sequence as PAL QT and now I've brought it into Compressor on my Mac but I'm a bit overwhelmed by the format conversion options. Any ideas about what to use would be gratefully received. I have DVD Studio Pro + Toast 8 too.
    Thanks

In Compressor 2 (at least the one on one of my machines) in settings->Apple-Advanced Format Coversions you will see options for PAL/NTSC and you can start there and convert to the high end NSTC then encode to m2v. You should see some HD Uncompressed formats that should work to make a good self contained movie then encode that to m2v. I found the two step process as oppossed to sending straight to NTSC m2v (or really PAL) seems to work a bit better quality wise.
Definately test on short sections if you can to tweak because the converions can take a long time depedning on the machine and length of material.

  • What is best workflow for interpret NTSC footage into PAL project?

Premier Pro CC cutting a film for HD broadcast TV. Majority of footage shot PAL at 1080p, so I made a 1920 x 1080 25p project. Is it okay to make a progressive project for broadcast? Or should I switch to interlaced?
I am supposed to deliver an NTSC tape to the network.
Some footage is 29.97 and 23.97.  Is it okay to Interpret footage in bin as 25p PAL and then cut it into my sequence.  It seems to play properly; I'm just concerned about problems in the final output. I've read that people duplicate the clip, then interpret to 25fps PAL, and leave the original NTSC alone.  This sounds like a good idea. Working on a MacBook Pro Mountain Lion.
When I output the final QT movie, what are the best settings and codec to use for the final
Hi-Res output which I will bring on a drive to a post house to do final CC and layback to tape?
    Many thanks in advance.

  • Easiest way to produce NTSC DVD from PAL encore project?

I have a PAL Encore project with 25fps assets and subtitles. What's the easiest way to make an NTSC DVD from this project? Encore won't let me edit the quality settings to change from NTSC to PAL. These settings are greyed out. I take it they are dictated by the assets. Can anyone suggest how to make an NTSC project easily from this Encore project? I don't want to go back to the original footage. I want to just convert it from these Mpeg-2 files in the Encore project.
Any help would be much appreciated.

What Richard said. I'll add three things.
Encore won't let me edit the quality settings to change from NTSC to PAL. These settings are greyed out. I take it they are dictated by the assets.
They are dictated by your selections when you created the project. And NTSC vs PAL are not settings that can be changed in the project settings once created.
Regarding reusing menus. The files accessed by the Encore library for DVD projects are different for NTSC vs PAL. They have NTSC or PAL in the filename, but you don't see this from inside Encore. (They do not vary for Bluray menus.) You can take your NTSC project menus, "save as file," and then "import as menu" into a new PAL project. They will be the "wrong" pixel size and aspect ratio, but Encore may correct the par. I have never tried this. But if you get oddities doing it this way, in the new PAL project, add a PAL menu, edit in photoshop, and copy the button groups and such from the NTSC version of the menu to the PAL menu. That might work.
What I see in most of these "convert PAL from NTSC" threads is that virtually all NTSC disks play on current PAL equipment. Many users asking your question decide not to convert. that is especially true, because Richard's "export as NTSC" is not as simple as it seems.

  • Cannont add NTSC to Pal project

    Hi,
Ive been busy on this the last few days lol.
after using the "best quality dvd " settings in compressor, I go to import the assets into DVDSP but it says " cannont import NTSC assets into PAL projects"
    1. how is it NTSC and since im in Europe Id like a Pal project. what dvd settings am i doing wrong in compressor?
    Sean

    Hi seanie84
Check your timeline. It sound as if you have made your project in NTSC and not in PAL.
FCP has a default of NTSC when you start a new project from new unless you change all the defaults when you installed FCP.
If not this then your film footage maybe NTSC and when you first put a clip on the time line it would have asked you if you wanted to set the timeline to the same as the clip, if you said YES then it could be that, if so make a new timeline and then copy all footage from old timeline and if asked say NO to "the make timeline same as footage".
If your footage is OK from your timeline, then check your DVD settings in compressor and make sure they are PAL.

  • Can I shoot with a NTSC camera and convert to a PAL dvd through Final Cut

i am shooting a wedding for someone in Scotland that will be getting married in the States, and she wants a PAL dvd. Can i shoot the video with my NTSC camera (HVX 200) and with Final Cut convert it to PAL? If not can it be done someway?

the prefered way is to standards convert the video and import it into a PAL sequence
    http://www.nattress.com/Products/standardsconversion/standardsconversion.htm
an alternative is to produce an NTSC DVD; it will playback on a computer; Mac or PC, it might play back on the users hardware DVD player/ TV combination but it might not, no guaranteed there.
    Best bet is option 1

  • NTSC assets cannot be imported into PAL projects.

Hi, i have exported .mov from FCP and when i try to import it into DVD Studio Pro i get the message,
NTSC assets cannot be imported into PAL projects, WHY, it is not an NTSC asset ?
    HELP
    Paul

Do not use H.264. Use Pro Res or send the timeline straight from Final Cut to Compressor an a PAL preset (or one that you make yourself.) I prefer sending out self-contained versions in case I need to re-rencode or want to make items for various formats.
Movie setting up Compressor *in case you need it) is [here|http://www.dvdstepbystep.com/compressor.mov] Make sure to use PAL and/or make sure you make your preset PAL

  • What is causing all of my Images to import with a blue cast?

All of my images are now importing into Lightroom3 and Photoshop CS5 with a blue cast. I have reformatted the SD card, tried with other SD cards, re-calibrated my monitor with X-Rite colorometer, changed monitors, tried with another camera, changed card readers. The images appear as shot in Bridge, but when opened they come in with the blue cast.  The same images import properly on my laptop.  I'm shooting sRGB in camera and have tried a number of different shots, so artificail lighting is not the issue.  All images that are already on my hard drive import properly.  I was working in LR when this occurred, so, I think I must have inadvertently mades some alteration to the settings while working in LR.  However, opening PS separately and bringing an image in independent of Lightroom has the same result.  Images appear as shot in Adobe Bridge, then open with the blue cast.  Thanks for any assistance.

    Curt Y:
Thanks.  In camera I still shoot DNG and I shoot nothing but RAW. Is there something in LR and/or PS that I have done to make that change, and if so, how would I correct that.  I feel pretty sure it is something I did while importing into LR on my desktop, since I can open the images on the Laptop without any trouble.

  • Rename Images on Import with Orig. Camera Number Plus My Custom Text

Lightroom starts up with the insertion of a camera card to import new images. Every effort takes multiple stumbling around and eventually have gotten it to use the Original Camera Number. Thought it was saved as a Template. Then the next time it still goes back to using a Sequence Number "IMG_001". It does this even with the built in Templates. What LR says and what Actually is done Do NOT Match Up!! And I have been all over the web watching various videos and followed the video steps Still is not doing what it says should happen. VERY Frustrated.
Trying to find a Community for Lightroom - can't even find that!

When I open the import window the *Aperture Library* brick shows Destination as New Project and *Project Name* as Untitled Project. If I import with these settings a new project *Untitled Project* is created and the images import into it.
If I enter a new name in the *Project Name* box then the imports go into a project with that name.
Are you entering a name into the *Project Name* box?

  • Converting NTSC footage to PAL with compressor 4

Hello, Please can some angel help.
I have PAL and NTSC footage. I want the end output to be PAL.
I have compressor 4. What settings, step by step do I select to change the NTSC footage to PAL.
There is info. on the web all relating to old versions of compresor where there seems to have existing a helpful NTSC/DVD setting where compressor made it clear the setting you needed. This is not an option on Compressor 4 so I am hitting a brick wall.
I would greatly appreciate some advice here.
    Thank you

What formats are your source files? What format (aside from PAL standard) do you want your output file (s) to be?

  • Converting ntsc dvd to pal for web

hi , i am based in uk and I have a dvd that apparently is ntsc as it plays in my dvd player and says ntsc region, it plays on the computer to.
I want to take small segments from it to convert to web format , add titles etc and upload to youtube.\
trouble is i cant rip the files to use in final cut pro, tried media streamclip but that produces jerky unusable files with random drop out and colours
I then thought play it realtime into fcp , it will play going by a firewire into capture and i see it but when capturing it stops every few seconds saying there is dropout I unchecked report on droped frames, and abourt on dropout. and capturing without deck control. i then tried to go through my dv camera but that doesnt see the picture only the sound.
I thought I could copy the dvd but it wont work either on my dvd recorder or with toast.
any suggestions how I can do this? does it need converting first if so how?
I am only using a few minutes of at least 90 minutes of footage .
    thankyou
    ade

    >Maybe worth a feature request for CS5?
    God in heaven - NO!
As Joe just pointed out, these are 2 completely different TV standards, running on different frame rates at different resolutions.
The results of attempting this "on the fly" with menus etc would very closely resemble a dogs dinner.
    >I would therefore guess that you are stuck with copying the menus and other such assets into a new Encore project for each output format.
    That won't work.
NTSC is 720x480, PAL is 720x576. They have different PAR as well.
If compliance is what you need, then design your menus in Square Pixels at 720 x 540, and resize the image (in PS) to the required TV standard before importing into Encore. 16/9 is worse, as you need to use different designs for each TV standard. There are no short-cuts.
    Asset preparation should be done
    i outside
    the authoring application, never
    i in
    it.

  • Burning NTSC movie on PAL disk

I decided to burn NTSC movie on a PAL disk using IDVD. The computer warned me about my action but I decided to go through with it and I got a surprise. The first DVD came out O.K but when I inserted another blank DVD for another copy, the IDVD encoder hung up and created a frisbee.
The next step I took was to transform my NTSC movie to PAL (Changed frames/s from 30 to 25) before using IDVD and choosing PAL disk. My IDVD menu movie clips were left in NTSC format, by mistake, and there was no computer warning. This time after burning two DVD's the third was a frisbee when the encoder crashed again. Each time I had to restart the computer.
Has anyone experienced the same problem ?
Is this a problem with software or my Mac ?

Not sure about the NTSC/Pal issue, but you might create a disk image and then burn a DVD-R. I use Verbatim exclusively.

  • NTSC vs. PAL: asset question

Hoping this will be a trivial question for someone, since my DSP 4 documentation doesn't seem to have much to say about it...
I'm planning to produce a series of DVDs whose content will consist of a large number of video assets (2000+). Currently, these assets are in NTSC MPEG-2 format, with corresponding audio assets in either AC3 or AIFF. My question is: what do I need to do in order to produce a complimentary series of PAL DVDs with this content, given that DSP doesn't appear capable of importing NTSC video assets into PAL projects directly?
Now that I'm on an Intel-based machine, I've sent in my upgrade fee for the latest version of Final Cut Studio (which of course includes DSP), so I'll have that at my disposal. Does this software provide a batch-friendly means for me to do what I'm attempting, or do I need additional tools?
    TIA for any advice.
    PowerBook G4   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

You will need to convert NTSC assets to PAL assets to do it properly (including menus). Compressor does conversion and there is also other software, such as www.Nattress.com, which does conversion.
The quickest (but may not be best) is to run the assets in bulk through Compressor (but this will also depend on whether you have the Final Cut files still).
2,000 video files is daunting, so try to stay as organized as possible
Also as an aside, more people who use PAL (ex-U.S.) have the ability to play NTSC as compared to the U.S. which is more NTSC centric, so you may want to keep that in mind depending on the project, the audience and whether you will need a PAL version.
