Images In Dock

Most of the files in my doc are word files and I have a lot of them, so my dock ends up being one long string of work files. Is there any way to replace the standard page-looking icon with some images or something else?
Any help would be appreciated?

Hi, engboy —
Please accept a warm welcome to Apple Discussions.
  (1) Consider using a Dock folder. Before I answer your question directly, I hope you won't mind if I suggest an alternate approach. If reducing Dock clutter is your primary objective, using a Dock folder may be more helpful than spending time changing icons. Here's what I mean: create a folder — let's call it "Miscellaneous Word files" — with or without a custom icon (see below). Then, instead of minimizing the MS Word files into the Dock, save (or drag-and-drop) them into this folder. Drag the folder's icon into the right side of the Dock. Now, when you want to open one of the Word files, click-and-hold this file's Dock icon (actually called its "Dock tile") and a "pop-up" list of all the files will pop up for selection. You can also do this hierarchically (for files within folders within folders, etc.) — I have a Dock tile for my Documents folder, for example.
If you intended to say "work files" —> I'd think that Word (or whatever app) could be forced to temporarily save its interim files in this folder, too — depending on the files being located here, and how you've set up the app's "save" preferences... Sorry, I'm not using MS Word at the moment, so I can't test this...
Does this make sense? Imho, it works with a lot less effort.
  (2) Changing files' or folders' icons. Doing this is pretty easy, but requires a few steps (&/or a shareware or commercialware utility). Pick and copy (⌘-C) an appropriate icon. Next, select the file whose icon you want to change, and "Get Info" (⌘-I). Click on the small icon at the top of the Get Info window, and paste (⌘-P) in the "new" icon to replace it. Sites like ResExcellence exist solely to help folks with customization like this. Personally, I used to a lot of customizing in OS 9.1.x (and many OS before it) — but I've pretty much stopped in OS X, because a lot of customizations can subtly cause problems systemically, or after an OS X upgrade has been applied. Rather than "keep track" so I can troubleshoot, I've simply curbed my appetite in this arena.
Imo, Francine Schwieder (an especially savvy Discussions participant) does a particularly good job of explaining about icons, their peculiarities, and some of the situations that may require special care. Here are a few of her posts/threads that I recommend you checking out if you decide to do a lot of playing with icons: ( A ), ( B ), ( C ), ( D ), ( E ). You may also find it worthwhile to review results of a search of this forum for, e.g., [ (change OR changing) (icon OR icons) ].
I hope these alternate approaches are useful to you.

  • Disk image in dock quits working

    Hello everyone,
I have a disk image which I made in the disk utility program. I set it up with the security incription option when I made it. After opening it I placed the image that mounts up on the desktop into my dock so I can easily go through the sub menu folders and so on.
When I was in os10.4.11 I had no problem going back into it after reboot or after unmounting the disk image and remounting it. But in 10.5.8 (which I am now using), every time I eject the image and remount it, the folder in the dock does not work. I have to pull the folder (image) off the dock and drag the one from the desktop onto the dock every time. Is there any way to fix this?
    Thank you for any help.
    Marco

    Hello Baltwo,
Thanks for your time with this matter. I created another disk image. I did the 128 encription which is what my other disk image is. I placed a folder in a second folder (just to have something to navigate to) and placed the disk image on the dock. I unmounted it and then click on the .dmg file to mount it. I went to the dock and clicked on the icon. I shows the folders but when I try to navigate to it it comes up with the same "the application can not be launched -35". It is doing the same thing the other one is.

  • Macbook pro crashes and goes to the background image with no access to dock etc..

Macbook Pro Early 2011 version, running Lion OSX, crashes randomly and goes to the background image. the dock is not accesible nor are any other options, I have to hold down power to restart. I have found that a lot of my applications have started to crash especially iphoto, itunes and safari. Ive repaired permissions deleted anti virus software which i thought was slowing the computer down. Any help would be appreciated..

I suggest you post this issue on the iTunes forum.  You will have an audience that is oriented specifically towards this application.
    Ciao.

  • When opening more image files in CC they are floating at the back, behind current open files

When I'm working on an image or images (not docked) in PS CC on iMac OSX 10.9 Maverick, if I open a new file it does Not open at the front.  The newly opened file will open hidden/behind the currently open files yet if I got to the window drop down menu at the bottom it clearly shows the newly opened file is selected and thats the file I'm working on, even though its behind all the previously opened images and I can't see it fully .  Hard to explain but has anyone else found this issue?   Its strange and awkward when working at full speed.
    Any idea whats going on?

So in this screenshot I have 2 bed images open, then I open the office-2 image but it doesn't open on top of the bed images but behind, yet you can see from the layers & nav bar that its the office-2 image were working on.
This issue can cause problems when working fast with lots of images. previously I've accidentally closed files that weren't finished destroying history snapshots etc.
    Any idea whats going on?

  • How to get the path of the image stored in DMS

    Hi everyone..
My question is that I have attached an image with an order through transaction jha2n..
Now my requirement is to get the image in report..
I know the Logical id in ISM_l_ord class and physical id in ISM_P_Ord class.
I know that link between image and order is in SKWG_BREL.
But i am not able to get the path so that i can show the image in docking control.
pls help to retrive the path of the image stored...
    Thanks

EpicMaster wrote:Now the problem is when I run the application through the .jar file in the dist/ directory the images simply wont load...
    ..lblProduct.setIcon(new ImageIcon("Resources.zip/res/Product.png"));
Now the problem is when I Build&Clean the whole project which creates a /dist directory containing the complied and execulatble .Jar file for the application AND a folder called "lib" which contains the Resource.Zip folderThe String based constructor to ImageIcon presumes the String represents a File path. File objects do not work with resources inside Jar or Zip archives, for those, you need an URL. Gain the URL using something like..
    URL urlToImage = this.getClass().getResource("/res/Product.png");

  • Can't put photos/images in email (new email) in Mail

Okay, this is weird. I can no longer drop a .jpg image (or any other) into a new email message. (This is with my prefs set to compose in Rich Text Format, yes. And this is 10.5.2.)
If I try to drag it from the Photo Browser into a message, sometimes it appears as if it's going into the email message, but it does not appear in the body area. Sometimes it bounces back to the Photo Browser, as if the email message is an object that cannot receive a dropped image file. And if I try to drag an image file from Finder into the body of the message, I can get either behavior again.
Either way, I can't put an image/photo/graphic file into an email message.
Has anyone else seen this behavior and figured out a fix for it?

    An addendum...
Just to make it really weird, I can drag image files from the Photo Browser to the Mail icon in the Dock and make a new email, and then I can see the image in the mail message. And once I have that e-mail message created by dragging an image the Dock icon, I can drag other images/files from the Photo Browser into the same new message and see them.

(snipping several dozen lines of stack trace in the middle there)
The search results for various permutations of "docker error mount invalid argument dm" are badly washed out so I wasn't able to find any helpful leads; nor was I able to find anything relevant in the docker issue list. I tried re-installing docker (by running pacman -Rns docker and then pacman -S docker hoping that it was a config setting I could nuke & pave but this had no effect. I then ran the following:
    $ dmsetup ls
    docker-8:98-380441-pool (254:0)
followed by dmsetup remove docker-8:98-380441-pool and attempted the pull again. No difference.
I'm convinced this is not a docker bug but a misconfiguration of my system, but the error provided ("error mounting .... invalid argument") is rather opaque and I'm stuck with what to try next.
    Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Well, rm -rf /var/lib/docker did it!
I was unable to remove /var/lib/docker/devicemapper ("device or resource busy") but that doesn't seem to matter - as you suggest docker reconfigured itself. Thanks for the tip!

Everything was working fine, up until (I think) Sunday.

I have installed the new Keyboard Software Update 1.1 according to this tip from tuaw.com.
But be careful - for me this has erased the whole dock.app and the installation only changes some files in the package and after that there were missing some folder/files in the Content-Folder of dock.app.
I have to boot in target mode and copy the original dock.app from my MacBook Pro and install the Keyboard Update in the correct way. Now it works fine.

  • Total Newbie Question ... Sorry :-(

I know it's a windows thing, and I am now converted to Mac but I gotta know this because it's doing my head in. It's a complete stupid green gilled newbie question.
When installing new programs on a Mac can you create shortcuts to the programs on the Dock? I did what I THOUGHT it would be, i.e I made an Alias and stuck it in the dock, but on rebooting my Mac later on, in place of the shortcuts where 3 question marks which when clicked on did absolutely nothing???
    Help?

You aren't installing something from a dmg file are you? The dmg is a disk image – kind of a virtual CD. So when you double click the dmg and then get the little disk/hardrive/custom icon on your desktop that is the same as if you had mounted a CD. You then need to drag the application off of that "CD" into your application folder. Then it is truly installed.
You can then "eject" the icon your your desktop. This is what happens when you shutdown and without remounting the image your dock shortcut can't find the original.
    Just a thought.

  • HT1414 My iPhone 4 has recently started shutting off overnight. I have to power it back up each morning to use it again thus preventing me from being able to use the basic alarm clock feature.

How do I correct this recent issue where my iPhone 4 powers down overnight? It started shutting down as if I turned off the phone. It began around three or four weeks ago in December 2013. Is anyone else experiencing the same issue? I bought my iPhone 4 in January 2010 and use Verizon cellular service.

At first I suspected a bad connection with a Sharper Image charging dock. But I find that it shuts off overnight even when I don't charge it. I can have it charged up at night, not go to use it until the next morning and have to hit the Home key either with a quick double-click or long hold down on Home key until the Aplle logo appears, in order to be able to use the phone again. I have not resorted to wiping the iPhone to full restore yet.

  • White screen after a command line IPA creation

    Hello,
I am working on an iPad application. I use several swc files as library assets for my visual elements.
I compile my swf with Flex SDK using FlashDevelop and then with command line PFI to generate the final IPA.
My IPA application is generated successfully but when I run it on my iPad I just see a blank white screen.
    Do you have any ideas?
    Thank you in advance,
    Sacredcolours

Not sure this will help you, but if the white you are seeing happens to be the color of the background of your swf you might be having the same problem I just figured out on my end.  My app was coming along pretty well when I made a lot of changes to the way i was embedding assets.  After hours of trying different things I realized that my use of the variable name Dock was causing all my problems.
Basically i had a line that looked like
    [Embed(source="../assets/images/ui/dock.png")] public static const Dock:Class;
Seems as though Dock might be an existing class that conflicts or something once it gets compiled for use on iOS (this ran perfectly fine as a swf). I only found this issue when I put my app on my phone.  Perhaps you are having a similar problem with overwriting an existing class or something.
    Hope this helps.

  • Disable Properties Panel Popping up When Making Shape?

As title says, can you Disable Properties Panel Popping up When Making Shape?
Sorry if this is a silly question, I can't seem to find the anwser anywhere. Whenever I make any shape it keeps bringing the panel up.

As I don't like the way it covers the image, I docked it on top of the layers panel, and made my own workspace. I've read there is a new contextual menu to the panel on Photoshop 14.1

  • IBook upgrade to 10.4.6

I upgraded an iBook to 10.4.6 and on the restart I get passed the gray screen and apple it goes through the progress bar, but then I get only the user's desktop image -- no dock, no menus just an empty desktop. There is a pointer but nothing to point to -- keyboard commands don't do anything either.
I can start up from my iPod that has a system. I ran disk utilty and verified/repaired permissions also ran the repair disk. I tried Disk Warrior. I can startup in safe mode, thinking it might be a login item confict, but can not get passed the password entry -- i just get the spinning beach ball of death. I've used the option key to pick the system cd but then i get the gray screen with the do not symbol. If I try and start up with a cd in the drive and hold the "c" key I get the gray screen but then the apple shifts in it's background and locks up.
I'd like to reinstall but can't boot from the CD without the broken apple -- if I pick it from the "option" key boot I get the 'do not' (kernel panic?) icon.
Any suggestions would be great!! Thanks in advance. I'll erase and re-install if need be.

    Welcome to Apple Discussions, Dave.
You may be able to repair this with the 10.4.6 Stand Alone Combo Updater.
This is a fuller install, as opposed to an incremental "delta" update so it should overwrite any files that are damaged or missing. It does not matter if you have applied it before. It has worked well for many.
Remember to Verify Disk before update and repair permissions before and after update from /applications/utilities/disk utility.
