Images in Finder but not in iPhoto

Just restored using Backup 3.1.2. Most pics & Events appear in iPhoto '08. However, most current pics (March to August) do not. I can see the pics using "Show Package Contents" of
Picture/iPhoto Library/Data
-OR-
Picture/iPhoto Library/Originals
If I click the file name, I can view the pic with Preview. How do I get these pics into iPhoto '08?
Many Thanks!

Welcome to the Apple Discussions.
You're iPhoto database is damaged. Re-importing them to the db will be adding them to an unstable database, and the problem will recur at some point in the future.
Try these in order - from best option on down...
1. Do you have an up-to-date back up? If so, try copy the library6.iphoto file from the back up to the iPhoto Library (Right Click -> Show Package Contents) allowing it to overwrite the damaged file.
2. Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.
3. If neither of these work then you'll need to create and populate a new library.
To create and populate a new library:
Note this will give you a working library with the same Events and pictures as before, however, you will lose your albums, keywords, modified versions, books, calendars etc.
In the iPhoto Preferences -> Events Uncheck the box at 'Imported Items from the Finder'
Move the iPhoto Library to the desktop
Launch iPhoto. It will ask if you wish to create a new Library. Say Yes.
Go into the iPhoto Library (Right Click -> Show Package Contents) on your desktop and find the Originals folder. From the Originals folder drag the individual Event Folders to the iPhoto Window and it will recreate them in the new library.
When you're sure all is well you can delete the iPhoto Library on your desktop.
In the future, in addition to your usual back up routine, you might like to make a copy of the library6.iPhoto file whenever you have made changes to the library as protection against database corruption.
ps. The /Data folder contains the thumbnails that iPhoto creates for display in the iPhoto Window. Importing the contents of that folder will get you a lot of useless duplicates.

  • I can see a photo in Finder but not in iPhotos

Sorry to be a pain, i am sure the answer tothis question is simple, but as a new convert to Apple i am not familiar with the wrinkles.
i can see a photo in some view but not in iphoto.
Finder gives the file name, all details about the camera etc and even say it is in the Library :- Users/rosedayjo/Pictures/MacB iPhoto Library/Originals/2010/Last 12 Months
But of course when i go to the directory to which it refers i cant import this photo from there to reestablish it in the library because it says it is already in the library!.
    So,
    1. how does a photo seem to be in a library but is not.
    2. how to i get to the file to return it into the library,
    All help welcome

    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Rebuild iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.
Don't change anything in the iPhoto Library Folder via the Finder or any other application. iPhoto depends on the structure as well as the contents of this folder. Moving things, renaming things or otherwise making changes will prevent iPhoto from working and could even cause you to damage or lose your photos.

Unless you have the source files that were on the TC or Windows machine you will have to start over with a new library as follows:
Start over from scratch with new library
Start over with a new library and import the Originals (iPhoto 09 and earlier) or the Masters (iPhoto 11) folder from your original library as follows:
    1.  Move the existing library folder to the desktop.
    2. Open the library package like this.
    3. Launch iPhoto and, when asked, select the option to create a new library.
    4. Drag the Masters (iPhoto 11) folder from the iPhoto Library on the desktop into the open iPhoto window.
This will create a new library with the same Events as the original library but will not keep the metadata, albums, books slideshows and other projects.  Your original library will remain intact for further attempts at fixes is so desired.

Lightroom 5.7.1, Yosemite OS X - Synchronise Folder function doesn't work in Lr.
Is there a compatibility issue? I can see the folders/images in Finder but when trying to synchronise folders in Lr it does not recognise that there are any images and therefore unable to import to catalogue. Anyone has any idea how to make it work. Thanks a lot.

    Hi Elba,
Thank you very much for your reply. Not sure, however, that we are talking about the same problem.
I am trying to perform the same function in Lr that I have been doing for many years in the past and has only been a problem in the last few days (possibly coinciding with upgrading to Yosemite, trying to find out whether that is the problem)
I am not intending to sync any files with Creative Cloud but only trying to use 'Synchronize Folder' function in Lr. Normally, I would right click on a particular folder in Lr catalogue and click on that function to check that the Lr Catalogue is perfectly matching my drives where the original photos are actually stored.
The problem that I only started to encounter is that I can see the files on the actual drives but they do not appear in my Lr Catalogue and they are completely invisible to Lr. I simply can not get Lr to recognise them and then import them to catalogue.
If for example, I export images to Ps and then save and close them, they do appear on my drive but are invisible to Lr and I can't get them imported into the catalogue. Import to folder also not producing any results as they are still invisible to Lr.
Completely baffled by it. Any idea what could be the reason?
    Kind regards,
    Nik

  • 2. gen iPod nano sometimes shows up in Finder, but not in iTunes

    Hi!
My brand new 8GB iPod nano that I got for christmas sometimes seems to have problems connecting to iTunes. Every now and then (perhaps 1/4 of the time?) it will show up in Finder, but not in iTunes (I haven't enabled "disk mode" yet, so when it shows up in iTunes, it is not visible in Finder). Also, on one or two occasions, it showed up in iTunes, but wasn't recognized.
Whenever this happens, I just eject the iPod from Finder and disconnect it, and on the second try (on one occasion - third try) it will show up in Finder.
What could this be? Bad connectors/cable - or iTunes just not very reliable?
    MBP 15" C2D 15" 2.33/2/160 - MB (white) 2/2/120 - PBG4 12" 1.33/1.25/60   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

These problems return every now and then.
In addition, if the iPod is connected, is shown in iTunes and has already synced properly, it will sometimes reset if I try an additional manual sync from the File menu. It's a rather benign error, since it will connect and sync as soon as the iPod has restarted.
I also had one freeze of the iPod while playing.
This is my first iPod, and I'm used to computers that run for months or years without a reboot. Is it just normal for an iPod to freeze/reset every now and then? My Nokia phone does it too, but then I expect more from Apple...

  • USB shows up in Finder but not on Desktop

When I insert a USB memory stick in my mba, it shows up in Finder but not on the the desktop.  I've searched the forums and Internet and have not found out why this is or how to resolve it.
    Any suggestions?

In a way, they are the same, or it should be said, "refers to the same". The dock icons launch applications (Finder is an application). However, Finder launches itself in a full-screen desktop view configuration when the OS loads, automatically. That way, you have immediate access to a desktop Finder window to choose a task to perform or to open a file. You can also open additional "sessions" or windows of Finder to perform tasks such as copying, using the Dock icon to perform the task of opening a new window or instance of Finder.
At the top is the menu bar for wahtever application is running in the foreground. As Finder is running in the foreground, when the OS loads, you have immediate access to a Finder menu. In that menu is a Preferences panel for Finder. It is within this panel that you set up the manner in which Finder will display and work. As such, you check which objects will appear on the destop automatically. One of these choics is whther to display external drives on the Desktop finder window.

  • Adding an image when signing, but not in the signature field, in Reader

    Hi,
I would like to know if it is possible to add an image to a pdf document when I sign the document in Reader.
I do not want to add the image in the signature field as a signature, but rather below the signature field. The image is 'n barcode providing me with more information on the signature.
I have looked at the Stamper example, but this functionality is not avialable in Reader.
    Thank you,
    Magda

If you insert after signing you will break the signature!!   You need to do any such stamping BEFORE signing.

Why can you flip an image in Photoshop, but not Cmera RAW, or can you?  (CS5)

Doesn't look like you can. I'm just a user, so I don't know why. It can be done in Lightroom if that's any consolation.

  • IPod appears in Finder,  but not in iTunes.  iPod in Disk Mode

I have a 5th Gen, 30G iPod that cut out in mid-song this morning. The hard drive starting making the "tick, tick, tick...pause...tick, tick, tick" sound. I reset it and it does not show any of the music on it (only pictures). When I plugged it into the computer, it appears on the desktop (eventually) and in Finder, but not in the iTunes Source List.
After working my way through the first 4 of the 5 R's, I have come to Restore. Since I couldn't get the iPod to appear in the Source Menu, I haven't been able to hit the Restore button in iTunes. So I have placed the iPod into Disk Mode, and reattached it to the computer. Still nothing, just it icon on the destop, but nothing in iTunes.
I assume that the Data is Corrupt on the Hard Drive of the iPod, but how can you restore an iPod if you can't get iTunes to recognize it?!
    Any ideas are greatly appreciated!

    Hey there,
Have you had a chance to work through the troubleshooting solutions offered in this Apple support document? If not, it would be a good place to start. Hope it helps.

  • SD card not shown in Finder, but shown in iPhoto

    Hej all,
I have a problem with my SD card. It was shown by Finder on my iMac and it was shown in iPhoto too. Since a while no SD card is shown in Finder, but each SD card is still recognised in the Finder. I have a guess: I think, that I unconciously moved the SD card from the Finder to the s Desktop. Since then it's not in the Finder anymore, but also not on the Desktop. How can I get the card back also into the finder?
    Hope someone can help me.

See if pressing the Eject key ejects the disk. If it works, restart your Mac then re insert the disk.

  • Ipod appears in finder but not itunes

    Hi,
ipod nano 3rd gen: see it in finder as a volume, it opens itunes BUT does not appear in list of devices!!
tried hard reset, restart, etc. Have the latest itunes and have tried to "see" the ipod on different macs, running different OS's
Of note: the ipod was possibly tangled with : my daughter tried to have some music transferred on her mom's PC, believe it or not. In so doing, they drag/dropped the files on the disk image (I guess). I have since deleted the folders and transferred contents into itunes.
The ipod starts up fine except it starts up as a "new ipod " each time, requesting language before being used.
Can't sync it since it doesn't appear in itunes...
Any ideas. I've looked into the forums but no success so far
Thanks for your numerous hepfull replies

EXACTLY SAME PROBLEM. I FOLLOWED THIS POST ON ANOTHER FORUM AND IT REALLY WORKED!!

Re: I have a ipod nano 5th generation that can not be found on itunes on Mac
It sounds like the iPod needs a Restore using iTunes.  But you're saying iTunes does not see the iPod, even though Finder sees it, so if iTunes does not see it, you can't do aRestore.  It definitely does not appear in the iTunes sidebar, under DEVICES, correct?
I just did the following with my 5th gen iPod nano and Mac (just to confirm it does no harm), so you can try it, if you want.  This procedure will erase the nano, so I hope all the songs (and other content) on it now are all synced from your Mac's iTunes library.  I have previously done this with older "hard drive" iPods before, but not a nano.
Put the nano into Disk Mode, as before (link in previous post).
With iTunes NOT running, run Disk Utility and connect the nano.  The nano should appear in the Disk Utility sidebar.  Select "Apple iPod Media" in the sidebar, NOT the iPod's "volume" that is indented under it (so the DEVICE should be selected, not the device's volume).  Over to the right, go to the Erase tab.
Set Format to Mac OS Extended (Journaled).  You can Name it whatever you want, or leave it "Untitled."  Click Erase.  This will erase (reformat) the iPod's flash storage.  Because the DEVICE was selected in the sidebar, it will also re-partition it (to one partition).  It should take less than one minute to complete, then Eject the iPod.  It should say OK to Disconnect on nano's screen.  But you don't need to disconnect it.
Use the Reset procedure (link in previous post) to take the nano out of Disk Mode.  Run iTunes.  Hopefully, iTunes will see the iPod (in "recovery mode"), and offer to Restore it.  If you can then Restore it successfully, your nano should be working properly again.
NOTE:  If there is a hardware problem with your nano, erasing it with Disk Utility may not work.  And that will leave your nano non-functional.

  • Connecting External Hard Drive to Time Capsule - In Finder but not Disk Utility

    Hi,
So I've got a bit of a problem.  I have connected my LaCie 2d Quadra External Hard Drive into my Time Capsule via USB for the simple purpose of making it wireless, as well as allowing both my husband and I to access the files on it.  It works flawlessly on my husband's MacBook Pro:  Shows up as an icon on the desktop as well as in Finder and Disk Utility.  However, on mine I can access it via the Time Capsule in Finder (as a shared file), but it does not show up in Disk Utility nor on the Desktop.  I tried installing the LaCie Desktop Manager, but, although it downloaded and installed fine, when I went to open it I received the error:  "No LaCie Desktop Manager Compliant Device Found".  I am assuming that is because it really is only even recognizing it at all in the Finder because it is a shared file, but not actually recognized as a Drive.  And that explains why it is not on the Desktop or Disk Utility.  Annoyingly, I can't drag the shared file onto my desktop either.  Well I can, as an alias, but it says original not found when I try to access it.
Obviously, I would like to access the LaCie drive on my desktop wirelessly as my husband does, the way it does when I plug it in directly.  If I connect it via USB directly into my MacBook, it works fine.  So really it is just a matter of getting it up and running wirelessly, which I know it can do because it is doing it on my husband's.   I am wondering if it is a Lion issue, as I am running Lion and my husband is running Snow Leopard?  But then again...it does work with my Lion if I plug it in directly...sigh...
    Here are our details:
    Me:  2008 MacBook, running Lion
Hubby:  2008 MacBook Pro, running Snow Leopard
Any help would be greatly appreciated...I'm bewildered!

On your Lion MacBook, click anywhere on the open desktop so that the Finder menus are displayed at the top of the screen.
Click Finder, then click Finder Preferences, then click the General tab
Under the heading of "Display these items on the desktop" make sure that there is a check mark in the box next to "Connected Servers"
    Close Finder Preferences
Open Macintosh HD or the Finder
Look to see if the Time Capsule icon is displayed under the SHARED heading in the Finder
Click on the Time Capsule icon and folders representing the Time Capsule disk and your Lacie disk should appear to the right
Double click on the Lacie folder to mount the drive on the desktop
You may need to click Connect As at the upper right of the center window if your disk requires a password. Once the password is saved, you should not have to enter the password in the future.

  • Photoshop opens from the finder but not the photo.

When I click on a photo in the finder, photoshop will open but not the photo. I have to open the photo THROUGH PHOTOSHOP. Not a big deal but terribly annoying and time consuming. Not sure what changed recently to cause this issue. I have jpegs and psds set to open with Photoshop—no problem there, just no photo when Photoshop boots up.

Select the photo then press COMMAND-I to open the Get Info window. In the Open With section select Photoshop from the Default drop down menu. If you wish to apply this to all such files then click on the Change All button.
