Images in gallery now dark and dull

I added some new photos to my iWeb photo gallery, but when published, they look much darker and duller on the page slideshow, both in Safari and Firefox, and reds especially look horrible. The original photos were saved down to sRGB so they'd look the same for non-Safari viewers, but it seems like iWeb has converted them some other way, and they don't look very good at all.
For a comparison, see the way one of them is supposed to look (on Flickr):
http://www.flickr.com/photos/mlostracco/716062181/
...and how iWeb has interpreted it (using the same source image):
http://web.mac.com/mlostracco/Bitpicture/Photography.html#8
Considering this is a PHOTO GALLERY feature, it kinda defeats the purpose when the photos it produces are hideous.

I thought Marsviolet had the solution for a moment there. Unchecking doesnt make the change Im looking for though.
Joachim is close to hitting the nail on the head regarding the Gamma. What I am experiencing is almost precisely the same effect as if one were to open the image in Photoshop and adjust the levels (input-center) to a value of .81.
Thats a gamma adjustment. Ive played with profiles in my images with no solution. The damage occurs as Marsviolet points out at the time of upload. If you watch your images in the iWeb window you will see it happen right in front of you.
Not sure how Apple can get iPhoto images to match in appearance to those in Preview, Photoshop, WebBrowser (albeit with MINOR color shifts) and yet iWeb seems to bugger them up.
A fix has to be on its way because replacing the images manually on the idisk is not an option, nor is saving out a set of files from photoshop specifically to compensate for the gamma. This is supposed to be an integrated suite.
One could argue that it is not designed for the pro user but that would be a very weak argument as there are many serious amateurs shooting better images than pros just for the sake of doing what they love and showing it to the world.
Come on Apple. Listen up.

  • Help!  Images in Aperture are dark and oversaturated...

I just got a new MacBook Pro, so I decided to download the Aperture demo to give it a try. I have been working with Lightroom and wanted to compare the two.
So I imported my first folder of images from some conference events I shot. My first impression was that images appeared a bit dark, contrasty and oversaturated, but I figured that was probably a result of underexposure, since I didn't have a lot of light to work with, or possibly from working with flash in dark rooms.
I went through and opened up all the photos and pulled-down highlights and did color-correction (flesh tones were a bit red). Then I uploaded photos to SmugMug... imagine my surprise to see everything appear flat and light and undersaturated. I couldn't figure it out... I looked through Aperture for possible explanations... proofing wasn't on so that wasn't it. Exported images were given sRGB profile (as opposed to Adobe RGB). I checked them in both Safari and Firefox... same results. Then I went back to the originals and opened them in Preview... they were lighter and less-contrasty than Aperture showed them to be. They looked like they should have looked. (By the way, I am working with JPEGs taken in the sRGB color space.)
So what happened in Aperture? Did something happen on import? I have searched all over the internet and can't seem to find anyone else having this same problem.
    Help!
    -Erin

Okay, may have posted prematurely... images look the same in Aperture as they do in Photoshop and Lightroom. So it is something weird with how they display in Preview and online...
Grrrr! I hate this color management crap!

  • Photoshop CS3 makes all my images dark and over contrasted

I am confused here. Just installed CS3 and all my photographs on my monitor look dark and overly contrasted when compared to simply opening the image on the Microsoft viewer. I thought it was a color management thing but it does it even when turing it off. How do I fix this?

    Hello,
I've just upgraded to CS3 (windows Vista) and I'm having the same problem. Images are dark adn have an almost brownish tone to them. I tried "leave as is" "assign RGB" and all the options under "Assign profile" and nothing helped.
How can it be an ICC profile issue if the pictures look fine in CS2?
Please help, right now I'm thinking I blew $199 on an upgrade I won't be able to use.

  • I imported about 300 RAW images yesterday and worked with them for about an hour. iPhoto locked up on me and I rebooted. After I did the event icon is now gray and it says there are no photos. I know the photos are there. Any idea how I can recover them?

a best practice to is to never have any computer program (including iPhoto) delete the photos from the card but to import the photos and keep them and then after at least one successful backup cycle has completed and then reformat the card --  I use three very large (32 GB) cards in rotation so I do not reformat for typically a year or more giving me one more long term backup of my photos
Back up your iPhoto library, Depress and hold the option (alt) and command keys and launch iPhoto - rebuild your iPhoto library database

Images appear fine in Photoshop cs6 and cc, but print too dark, and also show too dark in Windows picture viewer. How can I correct this? Is this a Photoshop setting issue or what?

Ok, look at your files in Photoshop. What is the profile assigned to them? You can find this out by going to the Status bar at the bottom, clicking on the right-pointing triangle and choosing document Profile from the list.
Then in Windows, go to your Control Panel > Color Management and add sRGB (if it isn't there) and select it as your default profile.
    I hope that will work.

I previously uploaded images onto my desktop to work on in Lightroom 5.2. I worked on a few of the images days ago and just now getting back to them. My problem is I can only access the images I previously worked on and all the rest it says images not available but all the images are still right on my desktop.

Normally this happens because you moved, renamed or deleted these photos (or the folders that contain them) outside of Lightroom. This is how to fix the problem: Adobe Lightroom - Find moved or missing files and folders

You should get your keyboard checked as it's repeating  on a lot of keys and makes you look silly.
There are 9 different versions of iPhoto and they run on 9 different versions of the Operating System. The tricks and tips for dealing with issues vary depending on the version of iPhoto and the version of the OS. So to get help you need to give as much information as you can. Include things like:
    - What version of iPhoto.
    - What version of the Operating System.
    - Details. As full a description of the problem as you can. For example, if you have a problem with exporting, then explain by describing how you are trying to export, and so on.
    - History: Is this going on long? Has anything been installed or deleted? - Are there error messages?
    - What steps have you tried already to solve the issue.
    - Anything unusual about your set up? Or how you use iPhoto?
Anything else you can think of that might help someone understand the problem you have.

  • Problems with noisy and dull D7000 images in lightroom 3

I'm hoping to be just showing ignorance(no doubt) but I'm going a bit crazy looking at  images from my D7000 in lightroom 3. It may have something to do with my slightly antiquated laptop but the images come up colorful then go dull when the histogram has calculated. They also have quite a bit of noise compared to the way they look on the screen of the d7000 and when viewed in nikons viewnx 2. The lens I am using is the nikon 24-70mm. I want to be able to use lightrooms functions but it seems it's making more work for me initially and it never seemed to do that with my d5000.
Does someone know what I am doing cause I don't seem to
    Please help
    Ben

Lots of us know exactly why, and explain it over and over again to newbies... - I'm not giving you a bad time, just wish this were explained better by Adobe in the "Intro to Lightroom" info somewhere. Another option would be a sticky topic in this forum, if possible.
In a nutshell: Your camera makes jpegs that have adjustments applied that Lightroom does not apply. e.g. vivid picture profiles and/or active d-lighting... These jpegs are what you initially see in Lightroom (even raw-only: the jpegs are embedded in the raw file), but are quickly replaced with Lightroom's default rendering (which has no luminance noise reduction applied, nor intelligent contrast handling...)
You can change your Lightroom defaults if you want (to have noise reduction applied, and/or more vivid colors or boosted contrast), but also some things will have to be compensated for manually - e.g. active d-lighting.
Consider auto-tone too - it sometimes gets exposure and/or brightness wrong but is sometimes a better starting point...
Once you find starting points you like, you can make presets to apply in the future...
    Maybe find a tutorial...
PS - I would expect similar behavior with D5000, although starting points may have been different in-camera and/or in-Lightroom.

  • Images become dark and saturated Photoshop JPEG

So I have noticed several people having this problem, and the solutions that work for them don't seem to work for me!
I start in Camera Raw 8.0, then move to photoshop to crop and tweak a little bit more, then when I save to JPEG and view in windows photo viewer or other medium, the photo is dark and overly saturated.  I understand that photoshop is a color mangaged space, and that most other programs are not, but I still can't figure out how to make what I see in photoshop translate to the JPEG image.  These will eventually be used on a website and I need everything to look as professional as possible.  The image on the right is really dark, especially on the front lawn and porch.
    Here are my color settings:
If anyone can help, it would be greatly appreciated.

I suspect that when you're seeing your images not looking right you're viewing them through an incorrectly or incompletely color-managed combination of software and settings.  Note that Internet Explorer, while it does read image color profiles, can ONLY show you proper color if your monitors are set to display the sRGB IEC61966-2.1 color space accurately.  It makes the (incorrect) assumption that all monitors are sRGB.  I believe Windows Photo Viewer only does proper color-management if set to display in a window, not full-screen.
If you're wanting to publish on the web, one generally accepted "least of evils" method is to publish the images with a profile and in the sRGB IEC61966-2.1 color space.  At least that way people with "standard gamut" monitors will see them with similar to accurate colors, and folks with properly color-managed setups will see them accurately.  Firefox and Safari do NOT assume your monitor is sRGB, and both use the image and monitor color-profiles during image display.
In the bottom-center of Camera Raw is what looks like a link for setting workflow options.  If you click it, it will allow you to set Camera Raw to open your images into any of several profiles.  As I recall, the out-of-box default is Adobe RGB.  You *could* consider converting your images to the sRGB color space directly, then whenever you save them they'll be in the color-space that's more likely to be seen properly.  Or you could open them into a wider gamut color space (as they are by default), then Convert them (your last dialog above) to the sRGB color space before saving as JPEG (or use the Save For Web function to do that conversion while creating the JPEG).
There's really no "one set of best parameters" you can just set and forget for color-management.  All the various settings and functions have a good reason for being provided.  The important thing is to start to understand how color-management works, so you can begin to make the settings and workflow choices that make the most sense for you, to accomplish your goals.
Note that some programs aren't color-managed at all, still others are improperly doing it, and others actually get it right.  You really can't be sure everyone is going to see your image in the correct colors, so you have to try for a good compromise.  Yes, color-management in the real world is kind of a mess.

  • Photoshop cs6 images look dark and green when put into dropbox.

I have just upgraded to PS CS6 and my images are looking dark and green when I upload them into dropbox to send to clients for review.
A screenshot of my image looks perfect in dropbox but if I save it directly it looks terrible.

sounds like you have Prophoto in the soup (and some color management issues, tagged vs untagged, color-managed vs not color-managed viewers)...

  • Image gallery to autoplay and highlight the thumbnails

    Hi all,
I still haven't been able to find anything suitable for an
    image gallery with thumbnails that:
    - autoplays
    - highlights the thumbnails and displays the main image at
    the same time
    - and when the mouse is over the thumbnail, the thumbnail
highlights or has a border around to show that it's been selected.
Here is a sample of what I'm looking for:
    http://components.earthscienceagency...nts/slideshow/
Of course the captions need to be loaded as well as a
previous and next button to scroll through the images.
Any help with this would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks

    Hi all,
I was able to resolve some of my issues, but still have a
couple more. The images from my xml appear out of order (so the
last one inserted in the xml appears first) and also I'd like the
thumbnails to be highlighted as the main image transitions in and
out. I have the main image autoplaying and the thumbnails are
    pretty much static.
I've provided the AS below. For the thumbnails, would it be
possible to create a similar to the slideshow function and have the
thumbnails play at the same time too?
Any help would be greatly appreciated!
