Images in Preface

I would like to place an image in my preface. I would like also like to use the preface file for appendices, which will also have images. I find that when I place the image in the preface (the image is anchored and has a caption), all is well in landscape. However, the image does not appear in the margin (or anywhere) when I change orientation. However, when I place an image in a chapter file, one that is anchored and with a caption, all is well in landscape and the image appears in the margin as it should when I change the orientation. I am able to place the image in the preface as an inline object, and it appears in the text flow of the preface. Is it possible to place an image, other than an inline image, in a preface file and have it appear in both orientations?

Maybe I'm missunderstanding what the goal is

HELP! Fuzzy images and text in Muse

Hi
I am going to preface this post by admitting that I am a complete amateur, just trying to create a simple but work-able and professional looking website for my business.
I am new to Muse (previously used a similar program to create my sites) and have found navigating around the program quite easy. BUT my whole site looks fuzzy.. In 'design' mode and also when previewed (both in Muse and in browser).
I would really appreciate any help that you could give me. If there is a way to upload it to a temporary site for you to give me advice? Or if I can send the .muse file to someone to check for me?

A couple questions:
1) I expect you're on a Retina Mac?
2) Text appears to be images or System fonts? Whenever possible you want to use a Web Font. If none of the Web Font choices fit your need, then check the "Web Safe" fonts. If you still come up dry, then use a System font as a last resort. When using a system font Muse will convert it to an image. This will result in slower page load times in the browser and (in some cases) lower quality rendering of the type. Whenever possible, if you use a System font, you'll want to set the fill on the text frame to be opaque (a solid fill color, 100% opaque gradient or 100% opaque image that fills the complete text frame). If the text frame contains any transparent areas, then the image version of it will have lower quality anti-aliasing, edges, on the type.

Illustrator CS4: Exporting as cropped image, unable to define Crop Area or Crop to Artboard

Preface: I am using Adobe Illustrator CS4 Design Premium, Windows version.
I am currently designing some projects in Illustrator CS4. I am NOT using multiple artboards, only one. On previous versions of Illustrator, users could simply Export> an image as a JPG, and the image would be appropriately cropped to either the Document size, or predetermined Crop Area marks which were easily chosen in the Object dropdown menu.
Since the ever useful Object > set cropmarks function was removed with the advent of CS4, I am unable to Export an Illustrator file as a high-res JPG or TIF using the supposed Artboard as the cropmarks. In other words, when trying to export my project, the saved/exported image includes all content placed in the document, even material that extends beyond the Document size or Artboard size. Why is this? What am I overlooking?
In the Artboard dialogue or settings, I cannot locate any option to set the Artboard as the default crop area for Exporting, saving, and printing, etc.
After doing a bunch of research trying to find a fix, I have only discovered that there are thousands of other people posting on various forums regarding this same issue, so I think a detailed and complete explanation or instruction on how to do this would be very helpful and appreciated.
Other than in the Save For Web & Devices settings, there seems to be no options to Export using cropmarks, or export a file to be properly cropped to the Artboard dimensions. Again, I know this function is possible when Saving for Web, but not with a normal high resolution Export as a flattened image such as a jpg... or at least I can't find out how.
Any help is appreciated, thanks.

Yeh this is pathetic and in my opinion a bug or false advertising. Since they haven't fixed it i believe this is false advertising and misleading for users who may have upgraded for this "feature".
I do know some CS2 users who are holding out from upgrading for this reason!!
I wonder what CEO's or higher ups would say if they heard or could understand this issue...How does program loose features meanwhile Adobe has how many billions in resources to fix these type of issues for their users who paid a pretty solid chunk for software that should work properly.
Need some competition to fire them up! (any alternatives to illustrator anyone actually using?)

Images and text blacked out upon joining pdfs and saving

Let me preface this by saying I'm a complete noob to Acrobat, so sorry if this will be a stupid question.
Currently I'm attempting to join two pdfs together for a product on a few of my websites, upon doing so certain sections of the PDF are blacked out and the images are scrambled... I didn't have this issue with the Acrobat Pro 8 that was on my old system, but the most recent release (11.0.07) is causing issues. Am I missing a setting somewhere? It was pretty random doing this prior to today, now it seems to do it every time. The blacked out areas are fine prior to saving, but as soon as I save, close, reopen it does this.

But it doesn't matter, actually I can just save the larger of the 2 files and it creates the same issue, worked with support yesterday and they had me print to PDF the PDF causing an issue and it was fine after that.
No answer on why exactly. Just an extra step I guess I'll have to take...

MAC -LR : BACKUP OF IMAGE DEVELOP SETTINGS? SAVE LOCATION

Where does LR store the setting information for each image that has been adjusted? (ON A MAC!)
i have read somewhere it stores in some kind of .xmp file, however i think that refers to windows.
I want to find the best way to ensure that my setting are never lost!
- note, i used to use Phase's Capture ONE, however have been very disappointed to see that their new version of the software *(beta) doesnt read my previously edited files and retain their previous adjustment settings.

You need to think about data that stays constant, the image data, and data that is volatile, that is your adjustments and descriptive metadata which lie within the database. That's why I say your backup needs to pick up the image data once, and the continually-changing database on a routine schedule. If you stuck with raw and backed up xmp sidecars, you'd miss a chunk of your work and you'd have to reconstruct it after a crash, or reconcile yourself to its loss. If you switched to DNG and saved out the xmp all the time, then your backup would grow exponentially and you'd still be missing a chunk of your work.
Let's say that at some future time you wanted to migrate elsewhere, then we are in interchange territory and the xmp files may well be the way to move your work, probably the most likely way. So generate them at that point (for example, right now it is one way in which one can move from Aperture to Lightroom). But nowadays we're talking about SQL databases and it may be possible to write SQL to pass metadata and even adjustment settings between applications (I used to do it between big accounting systems so why not tiny imaging databases?).
As for image adjustments, different applications really don't use the same terms to describe things and you will probably lose data when you switch. It may not be easy to translate from one app to another, and some argue that it's not worth doing if you can't translate exactly, but some of us think that it would be worthwhile passing certain rough settings (eg white balance) across. It'll take guesswork, coding, time. Right now, you have to assume your adjustments are locked into the app.
You're asking the right sort of questions, and there are many answers. They often need to be prefaced with "it depends". One approach is to try a DNG workflow for a week or so and see if it works for you - long enough to make that decision but not so long that you're up the creek if you're unconvinced.
How many times will the cannon balls fly, before they're forever banned? The answer my friend is blowing in the wind....

Open An Encrypted, Password Protected Saprsebundle Disk Image With iPhone?

Is it possible to open an encrypted, password protected sparsebundle disk image using an iPhone/iPad/iPod Touch that is stored on a NAS drive connected to an AirPort Extreme Base Station?
If so, how do I do it?
If not, would you be able to explain why not?

   That's not really true. Sudo is one of the most flexible commands around and not only can a regular user use it but they can use it without a password. Mind you I'm not suggesting that you make all users admins; you can specify both of these privileges for this command only. All you have to do is to put a line like the following in your /etc/sudoers file. (with sudo visudo of course)
ALL ALL = NOPASSWD: /usr/bin/hdiutil create -encryption -certificate*-stdinpass -type SPARSE -fs "HFS+" -volname-size
I've included wildcards so that the cert file, volume name, size and image are arbitrary but the others must be in the user's command to qualify. I realize that you'll want different options to use FileVault certs but I don't know how to do that so I used your original example as my example.
   Of course it wouldn't be that easy for your lusers to get all of those options correct so the next thing you do is to wrap the command, with it's sudo preface, in a shell script that parses the cert file, volume name, size and image from the options the user passes to the script and puts those into the command with the right syntax. If you want to get really fancy, the script could prompt the user for any arguments that were omitted. Your lusers will think that you created this really cool command and never know that sudo was involved.

Editing & deleting images question

hi. i'll preface this by saying i may need to tweak my workflow in regards to editing. in any case, so far the way i've edited was by creating a collection. once i add my selects to the collection, i still have tons of unwanted images left in the folder i would be editing from. is there a simple, quick way to erase the outs?

i was thinking my question might not be clear. what i am doing is uploading images into a folder in my lightroom catalog. i then go to the folder and drag my selects into a new collection.
i realize that the collection is virtual. i'm basically using the collection as a way to group my selects to show clients. my question is this: is there an easy way, once i have my selects in a collection, to somehow keep these images in the folder (which is to say, they would remain in their location on the hard drive) and discard the images i do not want (that i haven't included in the collection i created)?
sorry for the confusion. maybe i should be editing differently?

Cropping images, then moving to the next image causes Aperture to freeze

Title says it all. Every time. Getting really tired of this.

Let me preface by saying that I do not use Referenced Masters, and have not with any regularity. But on those images that I have needed to manually rotate images, and certainly with cropping, using the New Version from Master proves the master has not been rotated, and has not been cropped. Thus it is the data set of commands, as one would suspect, that has had any impact of the commands themselves. So it would not appear to me to be necessary to be in connection with the disk with the Referenced Masters. I don't know how intensive the processing is when you reconnect to the masters after the changes made via the Previews.
I think your finding casts suspicion on the external disk, or at least the connection to it. Did you complete a test of exporting some portion of your Library as a New Library, and trying these command steps as the New User?

I need a button to reveal an addtional image when highlighted

I guess I should preface this by saying that I am just starting to use Encore CS3 and I'm still unfamiliar with all of the terminology. I tried to find an answer to my question, but I was unsuccessful.
I have three short films, each with their own stylized logo. My main menu is made up of three still pictures (one for each movie) - these are my buttons. When you highlight one of these buttons, I want the logo that corresponds to the film to pop up in the corner of the screen. The logos are not meant to be clickable.
Is this possible to do in Encore?
Basically, an image that pops up elsewhere on the screen (and is not clickable) when a button (which is clickable) is highlighted. When you move to the next button, a different image appears in the same place as the last one.
Any help is greatly appreciated.

Setting the color depth of images

Hi,
could someone please let me know how to make images (VolatileImages in particular) have 16 bit depth? By default it seems to use 8bits. My monitor, card, etc certainly allow for better depth. I understand that BufferedImages can be of type USHORT_GRAY, but I certainly need a VolatileImage.
I need to produce a high colordepth grayscale animation (I need to be able to draw on the image, as well as to produce images from an int array - interpreted as an unsigned short array).
I have been looking at numerous class descriptions, as well as sample codes, and could not figure the solution.

It seems to me that once you are in the graphics mode you want, and you have loaded your image with ImageIO and have a BufferedImage of the appropriate configuration, then you can create a VolitileImage and use the GraphicsContext of that VolitileImage with a drawImage of the BufferedImage...

How to help an image-based site's Google indexing?

I've a client whose site, due to budget and time constraints, is made up mostly of images. It's not a high-traffic site, but it's a site whose target audience requires more visual "wow" than most. I am prefacing with this because I just know someone's going to say "use more text" and that's not what I'm here asking about.
Instead, my question has to do with Search Engine Indexing of sites made up mostly of images. Perhaps Flash-based sites have the same problem, but I don't believe in those. The site in question has no Flash. It's 100% valid HTML markup, only that it's got more images than text. Even the company address and phone numbers are images. Don't argue with me, it just is, and had to be this one unique time. ;-)
Could I compensate for the lack of text by creating a DIV loaded with company info, putting it immediately after the body tag in the code, and placing it outside the viewport so no one ever sees it?
I thought of simply putting a display:hidden on it, but thought crawlers like Google's probably look for that bit of code. It's so easy to check for, after all.
Will placing a div outside the viewport with pertinent text in it help with the SEO concerns? At least a little bit?

Google frowns on site owners who try to manipulate search results by seeding pages with hidden keywords. I'm not suggesting for one moment that YOU would do that but lots of people have tried this with very bad results -- blacklisting or total removal from Search results.
Let's say you have a graphic banner in your header with the company name, slogan and phone number on it. It's obviously got content on it but it's not indexable. I think you could safely use an object replacement technique by adding a real text equivalent to the header and setting text-indent to -99999px. This makes the text readable by screen readers and bots that don't use CSS while keeping it out of view of sighted humans. Just make certain that whatever text you use has a graphic equivalent on the page or you run the risk of being blacklisted.
In addition, be sure to apply alt and title attributes to every graphic. Search engines don't place much importance on them but they won't penalize you for using them either.

Encrypted disk image with recovery key

I am trying to create an encrypted disk image that can also be recovered with the use of a key. It is basically trying to do what FileVault does where you have a password to get in, but there is a Master password that can recover the image if you forget/lose your password. I have pieced the basic concepts together, but it isn't working. First I create the certificates that I believe I need with a keychain using the certtool command.

certtool c k=~/Library/Keychains/SecureKey.keychain o= SecureKey.cer
I went with the RSA 1024 bit and SHA-1 stuff (that is the technically term for it).
After that, I tried creating the image. I am in the same directory that the SecureKey.cer file is in, so that shouldn't be an issue. Also if it can't find the certificate, it tells you that. Here is the command I used.
hdiutil create -encryption -certificate SecureKey.cer -stdinpass -type SPARSE -fs "HFS+" -volname TestVolName -size 20g TestImage
and that returned
hdiutil: create failed - error 0x8001184e
Does anyone have any thoughts on what I did wrong? Thanks.

Can you show at a glance which event images are in albums?

Say I had an event containing multiple similar but different images, is there a way to show in the grid view for example which images have already been used in one or more albums?
Would be handy to be able to select a 'show list of albums containing this image'dialogue box. I guess you could hide images you've used but that wouldn't work automatically, nor would any other tagging/rating.
Another approach would be to make albums containing everything in a given event, then move the images out of that album once used, just seems fiddly to me.

Yes it would and many people have suggested tit. Add your voice to the chorus at iPhoto Menu -> Provide Apple Feedback.
A workaround - and it's no better - is to go to an album and select al, then give all those pics a keyword. Then in grid view you can see which pics have the keyword. (View -> Keywords)

did you install jacob ? with the correct version number described in the installation-guides.
jacob is not an oracle tool, which normally is only useful for COM-commands against windows.
What did you do with the image?
