Images in text column to move?

Hi,
I placed an image over a column of text and used the text wrap tool. Now, is there a way for the image to move and shift down and keep in place with the copy as I add more text either before or after this article? I'm imagining, some sort of linking tool?
This would avoid having to continuously move images so that they keep in place (in relation to the copy) as more articles are added.
Thanks!

Yes, Quark was able to anchor frames going back to at least version 3,
probably further. And it worked the same way: cut the frame, paste into
text. Quark had fewer anchored frame options, in fact, none that I
remember. Objects pasted inline, so you could baseline shift them, but
that was about it. I pretty much stopped using Quark after version 4, so
maybe its anchored frame options have improved in recent versions.

• When have multiple layers, move images and text all starting from background layer

Greetings
I have an image that has some 24 layers, many of these are text.  When trying to move the images and text all on the same layer yesterday, I ran into problems, but eventually fixed by moving these items starting from the background layer, by using Ctrl\Move.
This worked so well that I thought I would show my fellow learners at our regular Friday session on Elements 11 at SeniorNet.  However when I went to show them I could move easily and freely on the background layer - without using Ctrl, just the move tool.  Elements simply moved very quickly from the background layer to the relevent layer with the image or text (as before ?).
Cannot understand why I could not do that in the first place at home, but I had lots of tries there.  What circumstances could have been different ?

Did you have "Auto Select Layers" ticked on the tool's option bar?
It is not clear to me what the ultimate goal of your demonstration is. You can combine  the 24 layers into one layer (referred to as stamp visible layer) without flattening the layer structure. To do this, do the following:
Open a blank layer at the top of the stack of layers in the layers palette
Press CTRL+ALT+SHIFT+E on the keyboard
You can work on this stamp visible layer. The layers below will not be impacted. If you don't like what you have done, simply delete the stamp visible layer, then start over.

How do I drag an image or text box to the "workspace" off of my working file but where I can still see the image and text box for future use?
When I drag the item off of the trifold that I am creating, it just disappears but I still want to use it.  I just need to move it out of the way to modify other portions of the document.
thanks,

Add another page below the current one to use as a storage area. You can't use the grey area around the page for storing items you want to use later.
Go to the Pages Menu>Provide Pages Feedback if you would like to request this feature be added in future versions.

• Text Columns in CS3/Mac

Hi -
I'm on a Mac and trying to create text columns in Photoshop CS3. I know that I could bring the image into InDesign and lay it out that way, but want to do everything in Photoshop because I am putting it up on the web. Are creating text columns in Photoshop possible? Thanks in advance for your help.
Cheers
David

You can create columns by drawing a text rectangle for each column with the text tool, before you start typing obviously.
[EDIT: You can use guides to later use the text tools to draw the rectangles according to the layout of your choice.]

• Correct workflow when inserting images into text, InDesign CS4

Hi,
I am new to InDesign and I have a problem regarding a really basic thing and I would be very grateful for help.
I am writing an article which is about 10 pages long. It consists mostly of text. I have finished writing and now I want to add some illustrations with descriptions. I've already figured out it's best to insert images into the text frame so they behave as "anchored objects" and they move together with text when I add or delete something on previous pages. Now I would like to place TWO OR MORE images, one next to each other, in a line. This is a bit tricky but I created an object style with Position: Custom in "Anchored object options" and it works more or less fine. This works great but now it would be hard to add descriptions to these images that would still be anchored.
So I created something different. I made an empty rectangle frame, a small text frame under it and grouped them. Then I placed it in my master text frame and basically did the same thing as for previously described images. Now I place the newly loaded image in the empty rectangular frame and add text in the empty text frame. BUT now I have problems with frame size for different-size images.
What if I have a REALLY LONG article and want to add LOTS of images with decriptions that would be anchored in the text so I can edit previous pages? I can do this my way, but it's extremely uncomfortable and takes ages. Is there any comfortable, non-destructive workflow for doing such things?
Sorry for my English.

Hi,
I would recommend following steps:
Place one or more images
Don't anchor them yet.
Arange them (the images) relatively to each other, add a text frame and arrange them correct relatively to the images.
Group images and text
Copy (or cut) them into the clippboard
Set the curser into the text where it should flow
Paste it
Adjust the anchored object (the group)
You need to group several objects to anchor them together as one anchor.
Further recommendation:
For the images I would specify an object style for fitting, stroke, corner optione.
For text frames I would specify an object style for text object options, like text offset, and used paragraph style, no boarder, etc.
For the group I would spcify an object style which leaves above mentioned settings undefined (option field is grea or has a dash). But the anchored position of the whole group and text wrapping should be specified.

• IWeb sites are slow to upload. text columns turn to heavy png files

Hi!
Yes I've noticed that iweb sites for some odd reason are slower to load on any browser. No matter what the hosting is. I use Me.com for a few years and iWeb as I don't have the time or patience to bother with Dreamweaver. I use Me.com for hosting as well as another web hosting server. If there is graphic material on the page, it takes so long to open. Apple must do something about it for sure.
The program iWeb itself doesn't open up fast enough if you have more than 3 pages on it (which any normal site would have). I'm glad Apple made good changes in iWeb09, but it needs to do something about the speed of the program, the sites it makes and how it processes simple matter on it.
Even though, I have come across some good examples of iWeb made sites that are easy and relatively faster to open or they open at a normal speed. The authors also have used flash material on their iWeb sites. I have a non-registered program (web site Maestro) that claims to ease up and streamline the graphic and other heavy content on a iWeb site to make it lighter with loading.
But the unregistered version works on 70 percent files only. And I don't really notice any difference with it either. So I'm doubtful of buying the full version.
Any thoughts? Solutions? Would really appreciate.
ANOTHER ISSUE that I have discovered while making iWeb site is that a text column put on a shape after publishing turns into a heavy PNG picture file that can weight almost upto 1 whole megabyte!!!
And you keep wondering why the darn page is so slow to open!!! Cuz a simple text could've been just about 50kb. But it turns into a 900kb picture in png!!! Is there a way to change this?? I guess, taking out the picture from the published site folder and reediting it in - say - Photoshop reducing its size may help. But its so cumbersome and arduous to go into every darn folder and open all the text now converted into pics and re-edit them!! And then their reduced quality will make the text look feeble and bad quality too.
This is a problem that APPLE iWEB experts Must work on. iWeb gives a certain flexibility as its like a free flowing canvas. But then its also a known fact that iWeb sites are exceptionally heavier to open, unless you know many other tweaks here and there to make it work right. But again, this is contrary to the purpose of iWeb, cuz its made for amateur site makers.
I wish there is a work around this thing really.
ANY SUGGESTIONS FRIENDS?? WOULD LOVE TO HEAR. PLEASE SHARE YOUR THOUGHTS AND SOLUTIONS.
Thanks.
Regards,
Nitesh

Welcome to the Apple Discussions. Shapes by their very nature are graphic elements that end up a png file whether there's text in them or not. You should try adding the text in a text box above the shape and see if there's any difference. Just be sure to use a Web Safe Font and not add any enhancements that will turn it into a image file:
You may not notice a difference with loading with WSM but those with Internet Explorer should. Have you tested your site with and without WSM on a PC?
In WSM you can set the amount of optimizing for graphics. I've set it at about 60% (moderate) and haven't tested other settings for image quality. I'm sure a lower quality level, i.e. more compression, will have a impact on file loading. I just don't have a feel for the greatest amount of compression that will still have acceptable image quality. You'll just have to experiment.
If your site is a commercial site then using a commercial hosting server is the best option. Also, it's reported that using a Text Based Navbar instead of iWeb's java based one will help dark side compatibility.
Be sure to put in feature requests for the improvements that you see necessary to Apple via http://www.apple.com/feedback/iweb.html.

• SQL Server Long Text column to Oracle CLOB via DB Link

Does anyone know how to load a SQL Server Long Text column into an Oracle CLOB column using DB Link? When I try to Select from SQL Server table into Oracle table, I receive the error "ORA-00997: illegal use of LONG datatype".
Thanks,
Susan

Hi,
This is a known restriction involving long columns -
(1) LONG datatype not supported with use of DBLINK when insert or update involves a select statement
(2) LONG datatype cannot be used in a WHERE clause, in INSERT into ... SELECT ... FROM
constructs, and in snapshots.
The workround is to use a PL/SQL procedure or try the SQLPLUS COPY command.

• Aligning rectangular images in text

One for the typographic experts here: when locating a rectangular image in
text - for example, the author's mugshot in the top left-hand corner of his
column - is there any convention for aligning the top of the image with the
adjacent text? Top of caps or ascenders, top of x? I usually do it by eye,
but then wonder if I'm contravening some golden rule.
Having the top of the image frame at the same level as the top of the text
frame leaves the image a fraction higher than the adjacent capital, which
doesn't look right, somehow. There are a couple of examples of what I'm
talking about at

where the left-hand one shows the default.
Noel

Thanks, Robin. I hadn't got round to fine tuning the bottom yet. Still, if I
align to top of caps, the column looks funny from a distance because the top
right-hand corner is lower (at the top of x). That's why I asked if there's
any accepted practice (like printing the text on the spine of a book from
the top downwards).

• EPub Scanned Images without Text Flow

I am working on an ebook that has lots of complex illustrations, tables, captions. Scanning the images by converting them to JPEG is needed in order for the illlustrations and text to not move. Text flow is an option that I will not be able to offer.
How do I create an ePub book with scanned images without text flow. I did it once, but cannot remember how to do it.

TabulaMentis wrote:
The ePub version of the ebook will have a fixed layout without text flow. You mentioned that I buy someone's book, but this is a simple question. Why does InDesign not make it easy to convert an InDesign CS5.5 file into an ePub file with fixed images without text flow. Amazon and Google have lots of those types of ebooks in ePub format for sale with fixed images without text flow?
Because if you read anything about creating EPUB files, you'll find that that's NOT how they're intended to be used.
For example, in the first paragraph of the Wikipedia article about EPUB, you'll read:
"EPUB is designed for reflowable content, meaning that the text display can be optimized for the particular display device used by the reader of the EPUB-formatted book. The format is meant to function as a single format that publishers and conversion houses can use in-house, as well as for distribution and sale."
So that's why InDesign exports EPUB the way it does.

• Text columns become grouped

I am working on a magazine with 2 text columns on each page.
Until now, it worked like this:
When I place a word file, the text flows first down the left column, then down the right column and so on - and I can move, enlarge or diminish one of the columns - independent of the other column(s).
But now, suddenly, the left and right columns are mated so that I cannot manipulate them independently.
What did I do wrong?

Hard to say... sounds like autoflow that I don't use. But tell me, do they have the dotted line around them that indicates that they're actually Grouped? If not, select the frame and whack control-B (that's for Frame Properties, I'm sure it's available by right click or from the menus, but I have no idea where it is). Check the column count in there; any ID text frame can have multiple columns in it. I'm guessing that autoflow is creating two-column frames, not that you have two separate frames grouped together.

• Images Behind Text in RTF Template

While creating a few rtf templates, I noticed that if an image is to be shown behind text then the image will not render to back to .rtf by bi pub.
If I put the image inline with text, it renders just fine.
Am I missing a step that would allow me to render the image behind text or is it just working as intended?

• How do i make an image pause in a flash movie clip

Please can someone help me. I am trying to find out how to pause or stop an image in a basic flash movie clip,  after it has entered from one side and before it exits the other side.
I have been trying to work it out myself for three days but no joy. I am practicing  for a test with a training agency which gave me a disk to use but nowhere in it does it say how this is done. I am also having a lot of difficulty making stop start buttons work with this movie clip. I am using a trial cs5.5 version of Flash which expires in 7 days so i need to know this soon. I am up to speed on most of the features, its just this one thing that has me stumped. A lot of the tutorials or examples  i have found on the net are very long winded and hard to follow exactly. Could someone let me know, step by step the sequence i should follow after i have created an object  and made it go from one side of the stage to the other.

Hi
Thank you for getting back to me. Yes i am using a timeline tween. I have an image on my stage which moves in from one side and out the other side. I am trying to stop or pause the image. The effect i will be asked to reproduce in my exam will be something very much like the banner on the website http://www,iactweb.com. If you go to this website you will see images arrive on the banner and pause before exiting the other side. I am fairly up to speed on all the aspects of getting this effect but i have forgotten what i learned during the course on how stop or pause the images. I am using the trial cs5.5 version of flash . Thanks again for getting back to me.
