Images open small, zooming works poorly

When I open a large image (one larger in resolution than my monitor), it opens in a small window on the far right of my screen. When I move it to the middle of my screen, resize it so I can see more of it and zoom in again, the window snaps back to the far right. Very annoying! Why does it do this?

It turns out I had dragged the big gray blocker window to the right so I could see other apps in the background. As a result, all my windows were trying to stay centered in it. This canvas should be optional. Any way to turn it off?

  • In "Preview" 2 issues: clear last images opened & zoom not working

Any images opened in "Preview" from the past, all open up when I select other or new images to view. Basically anything I've opened in Preview since the install of Lion all opens when I select new images or items to view in Preview. Just now, 15 separate windows opened after I selected 3 images from the same folder. The other windows all contain items and images I've opened in the past few weeks. This is crazy annoying. I've never seen this before. I looked in preferences and I can't find anything to clear last opened or something to that effect. Please advise.
Secondly, in Lion, on both my Macbook Pro & iMac, I can no longer use my smart mouse, trackpad...to expand the items/images in my folders prior to opening them. Usually I could open a folder, see there are numerous images and use my fingers to zoom in & out on all the items of that folder w/my trackpad. Since Lion, no more.

In case anyone else has noticed this issue, I found the answer. It's a Lion issue, so delete the following plist:

  • Why does paintbrush not work on images opened from Bridge?

This problem may be due to another cause but the most common occurance is when an image is opened from Bridge so I've posted it here.  Here are the details.
I have had tons of problems with CS4 on my desktop PC but seem to have most of them resolved with a new video card, updated driver  and help from an earlier thread.  In fact, I thought all problems solved but this one has persisted.  If it matters I'm running Windows XP service pack 3, 4gb of RAM of which 3.4 is available.  It has an 2.67 GHz Intel Core2Duo cpu.
If I open CS4 and open an image, all paintbrush tools (paintbrush itself, clone tool, healing tools, etc) work fine.  Sometimes I can work for hours with no problems.  Other times these tools simply stop working.   When this happens seems random.  For example, the other day as long as I did not send anything to print, all worked fine but after printing a few images the tools stopped.  Other times I've printed and the tools still worked.  Sometimes if I open images direct in Photoshop using file -> open, all is well but as soon as I launch an image from Bridge, tools don't work.  Other times launching from Bridge works fine, BUT more often than not, it seems to occur after launching from Bridge, hence the post here as I already noted.  I've tried to trace down a common set of circumstances but it is too erratic.
What is interesting also is that the use of the tool shows up in the history panel as a step taken.  There just is no visible effect on the image.  This problem has been present since CS4 was originally installed along with several other problems.  In the course of attempting to solve them all, I have deleted preferences and allowed them to rebuild, I have actually uninstalled and reinstalled Photoshop multiple times.
More confounding is that CS4 works fine on a clunky old laptop with less RAM and a much, much older video card.  I also, as a test, ran the 30 day trial on the computer I'm using here.  It too is older and less RAM and that worked fine too.  So it seems to be saying there is something wrong with the computer used for photo editing or the video card.  Don't think it's the card.  I bought a new one.  It didn't solve any problems so I bought another and it corrected many of the other issues I was having.  Indeed after installing the latest drivers for this card, absolutely everything worked perfectly for almost two days but now this paintbrush tool issue is back.
So what the heck can be going on that is cumulative or is there a hardware component that is erratic or have I missed something in CS4?  Man I love the power of the program and the improvements since CS3 but if I have to shut it down and restart it every single image, clearly that is not feasible.
    Many thanks for any help.

Well, now I'm an idiot.  I fired up without the tablet plugged in and
paintbrush worked fine on all files.  I then left the image open I had just
painted on, plugged in the tablet with pc still running, no paintbrush
function using tablet mouse.  Without unplugging the tablet I again tried
the regular mouse and paintbrush worked fine.  So it's not a matter of any
sort of conflict with the tablet being active, it sure looks like a tablet
malfunction.  It still mystifies my how this tablet is so smart it can tell
the difference between psd and jpg but there it is...can't argue with
results.  Still, one last thing confounds me and that is the tablet works
fine on all file types in CS3 and every other app I have.  If there was a
malfunction with the tablet, wouldn't you think it would misbehave on all
apps?  Could it be that the tablet needs a new driver?  You must've had a
clue to recommend this course of action.  Now that we're here, what do you
suggest or should that be another thread?
By the way, if it matters I had already upgraded vc drivers and CS to 11.0.1
    before this started.

When Firefox is open the zoom function (option/command/space bar) does not work in Adobe programs (InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator). This happens only when Firefox is open and when I close it the zoom functions work fine again without having to restart the applications.
This is intermittent but happens quite frequently each day if Firefox is active.

MDN doesn't mention -chrome being used for ordinary web pages: https://developer.mozilla.org/docs/Mozilla/Command_Line_Options#Chrome
    When I use

How about using an intermediate page and window.open() for the target page? You can (mostly) restrict the chrome of windows opened that way, but it will leave behind the intermediate window...

  • Opening images in smaller window

Can someone help a novice with a code or instructions that
will open an image in a smaller (pop-up like) window? I want the
viewer to click on a thumbnail, for example, and have an associated
larger image open in a seperate pop-up box that is only the size of

    Thanks!

Under the Snippets panel, open the Javascript folder, and the

  • Firefox mage quality and resolution was superb when I used XP and Vista. Now that I have Windows 7, however (with the Firefox 3.6.3 version), the image quality and resolution is poor. Please help me!

I am using the Firefox 3.6.3 version with my new Windows 7 operating system. When I used all the previous Firefox versions in my XP and Vista operating systems, image quality and resolution was excellent! However, now that I have upgraded to Windows 7 and Firefox 3.6.3, the image quality and resolution is poor (unacceptable for downloading purposes).
    == This happened ==
    Every time Firefox opened
== I first activated my new computer and installed the Firefox 3.6.3.

All my images are pixelated in firefox 3.6.3
    http://www.dcgdcreative.com
Not only on my site but on most sites I view.
The issue is not solved by resetting the zoom text view (ctrl+0)
The issue is not resolved by starting in safemode with add-ons disabled
The problem seems to only affect .jpeg files and only on Windows 7 on my desktop; as I have viewed several sites using windows XP with my laptop, no issues.
I had the same issue with IE8 and was able to fix the problem with by setting up the compatibility view for all sites. Issue fixed no problems at all. But nothing similar for firefox?
    Whats the deal?

  • Images  too small to edit

Something just  happened here. In the past, when I open any photo in Elements 10, the image would pretty much fill the space. the bottom edge of the picture would almost reach the bottom of the workspace...whether vertical or horizontal format. Then I would create a duplicate and hit either ctrl + 0 (zero) and the duplicate would be a nice large size. ( Double clicking on the little hand in the tool bar would also do the same trick).
Now , for some reason, the picture opens to maybe 60% of that size. It's way too small to work on comfortably. The duplicate is even smaller.  When I hit the ctrl + 0 ...nothing happens size remains the same. If I pull on lower right hand corner to enlarge...it only enlarges the ruler and frame. Picture itself remains same small size. How can I get that back? I tried a system restore. that did not work. Thank you.

    Hi Barbara,
    Thank you for your response.
I don't use the Organizer. Never have. I have my own system which I've been using for over 10 years and thousands of pictures...first with Photoshop 6; later with PSE 7 on  earlier computers and now with PSE 10 since June 2012.  Its always been fine beforehand. And I have only had problems with 10 on this. Its happened before but I think last time it was under warranty and on screen dialog Support Team helped me get it back.
    This is how I work.....
Whenever I save my photographs, I create a (new)  file on the desktop.  then I will download all the images from that project  from the SD card into the file ( example...Quebec...or Dilapidated Houses; or Antique Car Show 5/2013;  etc etc.) OK then when I want to edit a picture.... I open that particular one in PSE. Then I immediately make a duplicate. OK Here is where the problem now occurs. Prior to today, after I have the duplicate on the screen.....I would just hit ctrl + 0 (zero)  and the picture enlarged to a nice size. Very easy to see and work with. (One can also double click on the little hand in the tool bar for the same effect). But something happened here and when I now do that...the image does NOT enlarge. It actually creates a smaller duplicate.  Which makes it VERY hard to edit when its so small.
Please refer to the page  attached to this email file. These should help to show what my problem is here.
How do I get back the function where ctrl + 0 (zero) or double clicking on the toolbar hand gives me a nice full image?
    Thank you.

  • Error: Not Enough RAM to Open Small Files

    MacBook5,2
    Macintosh OSX 10.6.3
    4GB RAM
    NVIDIA GeForce 9400M - 256MB
    Adobe Photoshop CS4 Extended (11.0.1)
I am rendering TIFF files out of Maya that are 11880 x 3400 pixels.  The file size ranges between 100 - 160 MB.  Whenever I attempt to open one of these images in Photoshop, I receive this error: "Could not complete the Open command because there is not enough RAM."
I just ran Adobe Update and I have all the latest updates.
I deleted my Photoshop preferences and restarted Photoshop.
I have my Scratch disk set to an internal solid state disk with 30 GB of free space.
    I have Photoshop's RAM set to 3000MB.
Despite all of this, I still receive the "Could not complete the Open command because there is not enough RAM" error every time I attempt to open the images rendered out of Maya.
The images from Maya are completely normal 8bit TIFF files with neither an alpha channel nor a depth channel.  I can successfully open them in After Effects, but this is useless to me.  I need to edit them individually in Photoshop.
Photoshop's error is clearly not due to file size.  I have HDR panoramas with dimensions greater than 11880 x 3400 that go up to 1GB in file size that I can open and work on in Photoshop without any problem.
Why is Photoshop not playing nicely with these TIFF images?

I still want to a solution to the above problem, but I have found a temporary work-around using After Effects.
Import the image into After Effects and then save the image as another file using Composition --> Save Frame as --> File.
As I said earlier, After Effects is capable of reading the files that are coming out of Maya even though Photoshop is not.
When I use After Effects to save the image as a TIFF, Photoshop is now able to open the new TIFF file.
This, however, is only a temporary work-around.  It is not optimal to resave the image before I start working on it.  I am probably loosing some precious data in the After Effects conversion.  As a matter of fact, the images tend to be 40MB smaller in size when I export them through After Effects, even though I am using the same file type, no compression, and still 8 bits.
Now, back to the problem: What is wrong with Photoshop?

  • Not all selected images open in photoshop

I have lightroom 3 and cs5. When I select images from lightroom and open in photoshop sometimes not all of the selected images open. It might miss a random image or 2 or 3. All the images are clearly highlighted to open and lightroom confirms the correct amount with "selected images". Obviously driving me mad as I have to go back and try to figure out which image is missing from say 20 or 30 images.
    Any ideas greatly appreciated

I have the same exact problem as the OP.
Also running OS X 10.6.4. and have 12Gb RAM. I also usually open ~50 images at a time to edit in PS CS5 and there are always a random ~5 that don't open. I tried opening a smaller number of files (~25) and still I get about 5 not showing up.
I don't think this has to do with bottlenecks, looks more like a bug. The files that won't open, are for some reason scattered, not for example the last 5 chosen or last 5 in the grid. I rebuilt and optimised the cat. several times, and always work with just LR3 and PS CS5 running, so no other progs are hogging the system resources.
I'm finding LR3 very frustrating and despite the new features are great, it is more buggy and unpredictable than LR2.
Are you all using the latest 3.2 RC? There was a bug in LR3 where files with an '&' in the file/foldername (or a few other characters) would not open in Photoshop. That has been cured in 3.2RC.

  • Photoshop CC displays images 25% smaller than other apps?

Why is Photoshop CC displaying images 25% smaller than my other applications? If I open a 72 ppi square pixel aspect image in Photoshop, I have to zoom to 125% for it to be the same size on screen as in my browser or any other image viewer. Photoshop reads the correct pixel sizes, but displays it smaller.
I design and build websites and have been using Photoshop for over 15 years and haven't noticed this until CC. If I save the images and build out the site, or even just drag the image into a browser and then overlay that browser window above the Photoshop window to see both images side by side, I can clearly see a 25% difference in size.
If I zoom in Photoshop to 125%, then the sizes match. So, the problem is when designing a website, everything looks smaller in photoshop. Then when I build it out, everything is way too big.
My browsers are definitely at 100% zoom and I can open the image in any other image viewer at 100% and the affect is the same.
Is there a setting that can be adjusted in Photoshop to correct this?

I also have the same issue. I can reporoduce exactly what Roger2012Jr mentions above.
I have Photoshop CC, Windows 8.1, screen resolution 1920 x 1080. Files look really sharp in Photoshop, but when the file is exported (for web or not) the image is blurry and about 125% the size it was in Photoshop. Also, when I bring an image from the web, tried with a random image it still looks perfectly sharp in Photoshop, just about 80% actual size. That same image exported still looks perfect in the browser, same as it was originally.
So starting from scratch with an image, there's no way to guarantee the quality when exported and quality looks really blurry. I can't use the program with any sense of confidence.
Can someone from Adobe shed any light on this?

  • How can I scroll around an image if its zoomed out?

Hey guys, quick one for you.
I have no problem using the hand tool/spacebar to scroll around an image when zoomed into it, but as soon as I can see the whole thing I can't scroll around anymore and its just locked to the center
I am a After Effects user so I find this a bit annoying that I can't do this, so I figure there MUST be a setting somewhere I could change to enable it.
    Thanks!

Sorry but "How can I scroll around an image if its zoomed out?" has got to be one of the stupidest question I've heard on this forum in some time. Brandon really needs to think before posting.
I've noticed your usual vitriol toward people having simple questions has ramped up about 200% since the advent of Jive, Buko. Maybe you need to disengage, or neck some holy fermented blue agave juice and take a nap?
I see the question as perfectly cromulent, and I use the suggestion I've given quite often. Apparently, a good reason why anyone would want to do that has escaped you, and it's made you even crankier than usual. So you react by giving the gift of vile condescension instead of just ShuttingTFU and letting someone else handle it. (Next time you blast Ramon for the same thing, take a look at your own behavior). And apparently, it's not enough for you to just accept that the way someone else wants to work is different than your workdflow, or is something that never even occurred to you. Maybe some folks just want an answer to their question, and secretly wish you'd shove your bad attitude up your [asterisk-substituted name for your lower-dorsal body opening]. Of course, some folks are just too polite, or they're new visitors here and won't say that to you because they don't know the legacy players and behaviors here. But I'm not either of those things, and I will. Because if you can dish it out, surely you can take it, right? RIGHT!?!?
Now...why do I think the question is worth answering? Sometimes I want to be able to have an entire smallish image visible at 100% magnification in order to view it as it will appear in its final destination. AND I want to do some work on it while keeping all my currently-open Palettes visible; maybe I want to move my image out of the way of a big dialogue box I've called up. (I'm only working on one monitor...sorry if that makes your hardened jaw drop down to your chest).
In Single-Window made mode I'd have to grab and move the whole window, but I can't do that if I have a big dialogue window open. In full screen mode I can scroll around and see all parts of that image at 100% without having to Tab my palettes to their hidden state, or shove my open dialogue nearly off-screen.

  • Images opened in ProPhoto RGB has heavy banding

    HI,
I am a photographer, and I shoot Canon 5D and 1Dmk3, shooting RAW and in AdobeRGB.
If I open a correctly exposed CR2 file in Camera Raw, applying no changes at all to the photo, open it as ProPhotoRGB 16-bit, I get heavy banding in the shadows and gradients when the image opens in PS.
If I then try to use a brush (normal soft tip), I also get heavy banding and posterization on the transitions between the different shades of that brush.
I have double checked that my image, when open in PS, is indeed 16 bit ProPhoto RGB.
If I open the same image in Camera Raw, but change the color space to Adobe RGB, these issues are gone!
    Late 2013 27" iMac with 24GB RAM, 750GTX with 2GB VRAM.
RUnning OS X Yosemite 10.10 and latest PS CC 2014.
DIsplay is calibrated, and these issues does not show when opening the same CR2 in Aperture.
    ANy ideas.

I Should add, that if I create a new empty document with the same settings (ProPhotoRGB/16bit/300dpi), the same brush works fine.
I recently did a shoot where I used a dark grey seamless background, and any given image looks great in Lightroom and ACR (imported as DNG), but when editing the same image in PS with the settings above, I get banding, pixelation, and posterization in the shadows, and in the light falloff on the grey background.
Using raw files directly makes no difference from a DNG version...
Again, change just the color space from ProPhoto to AdobeRGB, issue goes away most of the time.

  • Problem with image opened in Photoshop

    Hi all,
I am having a strange problem with an image opened from Aperture in Photoshop. Though the image looks fine, something is amiss. Most notably when I try to use the shadow/highlight command in Photoshop, the image actually darkens (highlights are set to zero amount). If I export the image as a jpeg and open it in Photoshop, the s/h command works as expected. If I export as a .psd file and open it, the s/h command again darkens the image. Interestingly, the .psd file thumbnail shows orange with read streaks through it, but opens as it should. Corrupted .psd conversion maybe?
Any thoughts or suggestions would be appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Steve

    Additional info:
Same problem with a series of photos taken about the same time.
    Other photos work fine.
I exported the original .nef file, opened it in camera raw/photoshop. Works fine.
Corruption/bug in the .psd conversion looks more likely unless I'm missing something. . . .

  • Can't get Image Matte Key to work in PP CS6 Mac

    Hi,
After tearing my hair and muttering adult phrases for a couple of hours while following the below instructions from the PP CS6 pdf manual, I still can't get anything but a black screen when trying to apply the Image Matte Key to a simple set-up. The project is in HD 1080p50 format and the basic editing has been largely problem free.
Add the clip (used as a background) to a video track in a Timeline panel.
Add the clip you want to superimpose to any track higher than the track containing the background clip. This is the clip revealed by the track matte. Be sure the superimposed clip overlaps the background clip in a Timeline panel.
In the Effects panel, click the triangle to expand the Video Effects bin and then click the triangle to expand the Keying bin.
Drag the Image Matte Key to the superimposed clip in a Timeline panel.
In a Timeline panel, select the superimposed clip.
In the Effect Controls panel, click the triangle to expand the Image Matte Key settings.
Click the Setup button , browse to the image being used as the matte, and then click Open to select the image.
(Optional) If you’re animating the Image Matte Key over time, make sure that the current-time indicator is in the position you want. Click the Toggle Animation icons for the settings you adjust.
Click the Composite Using menu and choose one of the following:
Matte Alpha Composites the clips using the alpha channel values of the image matte you selected in step 7. Matte Luma Composites the clips using the luminance values of the image matte you selected in step 7.
    What I do is:
    • I have a clip on Video 1. I want to use a hand painted luma matte made in PS CS6 for changing levels ('exposure') in an irregular area of the clip.
    • So,  I duplicate the clip on Video 2 and add an 'RGB Curves' fx for the level adjustment.
    • Then, I add the Image Matte Key to the Video 2 clip and set up the Photoshop b/w image (RGB 8 bit, 1920x1080) from my external eSATA disk containing the Project and media (step 7 above).
    • I select 'Matte Luma' (step 9) – and expect the relevant part (painted white on the matte .psd pic) of the duplicated, level adjusted clip to be superimposed on the Video 1 clip.
    • But I only get BLACK!
I tried using Track Matte Key, with the matte pic on Video 3 – no problem, worked just as expected.
So, what's the voodoo with Image Matte Key?
    Kind regards,
    Joachim

    Ann, Steven, Bill,
Thank you very much for your encouragement and duplication work! Truly appreciated.
This morning, with some fresh energy, I attacked the problem afresh and finally found the culprit(s).
It turned out that the major problem was the Photoshop file I originally prepared as a test matte. I created the original psd through the PP File menu to automatically get the correct dimensions. For some reason, it may have got corrupted. When it didn't work and just resulted in a black image, I used it as a template, changed it and resaved it. Apparently the problem was inherited to the resaved psd:s, even though they worked fine when imported into the project and used as mattes with Track Matte.
    Go figure…
Anyway, today I created a brand new matte file in PS CS6 and, lo and behold, Image Matte Key now worked as expected!
    Almost…
Going back to PS, I edited my simple matte (just two black rectangles on white) and applied a rather heavy blur. I then saved (not Save as…), deleted Image Matte Key from my fx stack in PP, reinstantiated Image Matte Key and set it up with the now resaved psd.
    No blur!
I then went back to PS, resaved my blurred matte file with a new file name and repeated the above exercise – first deleting and then reapplying Image Matte Key, setting it up with the new, blurred matte psd.
Now I got a blurred keying effect.
So, it seems that Image Matte Key won't 'see' a changed file – apparently it 'remembers' the first version of the file and refuses to accept the saved changes.
I think that I've seen a post here somewhere about the same or similar problem with PP CS5 or 5.5.
Anyway, I've learned a lot and again, thanks to you guys who chipped in!
    Kind regards,
    Joachim
