Images reduce in size on export

When exporting images from Aperture to desktop or external hard drive, they reduce in size by more than half. I have preview preferences set to 'do not limit' but they still export smaller... Please advise how to remedy this dilemma.

JPEG is a lossy format, which means it's already been compressed - some information has been discarded by your camera to make the file smaller. The more compressed a file is, the more info you lose. When you work inside Aperture all the adjustments you make (without going to plugins or an external editor) are instructions that are applied on the fly by the software, so you're not actually affecting pixels but the way you see them. Only when you export that file are those adjustments then applied. If you export as a JPEG, you're applying compression again so in essence you're getting a degraded file. This may not be apparent but it's there. If you should re-import that degraded file and re-export it again, eventually you'd get something pretty useless. That's why we have lossless formats: a TIFF or PSD will not contain compression, allowing you to manipulate the picture without losing data.
Compression is a pretty complex beast and while you can shrink a file down a lot, eventually you reach a limit where compression becomes useless. There's just so much data that can be taken out. That's why zipping a TIFF will make a much bigger difference with the original than zipping a JPEG.

It's not and it is. It's NOT correct that you should use RAW for printing. You can't print from RAW. RAW is just sensor data that always needs to be converted in order to be used, whether in print or digital format. The big advantage is in editing because it allows much greater manipulation of the camera's data after the picture has been taken and without loss or degradation.
But it IS correct that manipulating a JPEG file will result in data loss if you repeatedly export and import as JPEG. When editing JPEG you should either stay in Aperture or export to TIFF or PSD before editing in another app. You can get spectacular prints from a JPEG file as long as you watch your workflow.
There's a lot more to be said about this subject and I'm not sure if I'm being as clear as I could be. But hopefully this is shedding some light for you on the subject...

Reduce Doc Size When Exporting

Is there a way to reduce a page size when exporting from InDesign? I have a 20 x 30 poster want to export at 50% and make the pdf @ 10 x 15. Thanks.

by print to pdf do U mean make a ps file instead of exporting, correct?
Well, here's the thing... the orig question was a generalization of what we are trying to do.
The actual file is 19 pgs of panels that are 20 x 30. We need to make pdfs for the client to look at on screen. The file is huge when we try to make pdfs by exporting... even at the smallest file size and then reduce file in Acrobat. We found that reducing the doc size & making pdf yields a much smaller and more manageable file size, but it takes very long to postscript. We were just trying to avoid that step. Thought for sure the was a way to reduce the output size when exporting.

How to reduce type size on exported copyright?

I have a pretty long name. Therefore, my copyright notice is quite long.

When I export a web sized (300 x 200) image, the copyright notice is so large that it gets chopped off. How can I reduce the type size used so the whole message makes it onto reasonably sized images?
Or, do I just have to start using larger images on my web sites?

Reducing file size for export - best results???

I have put my art to eleven songs of a client. I am beginning to turn them into quicktime conversions movies and am trying Animation, Pixlet, H.264, Sorenson 3 (recommended by Apple Pro person). I cruntched all songs and looked at my folder - gulp - over 25 gigs (each song is approx. 3-4 gigs)...hum, can't get that on a DVD.
Now I am beginning to reduce quality, setitng key frames to automatic instead of all, reducing size. I am getting smaller file sizes but of course the stuff looks worse.
Any suggestions while I continue to try out everything? Any suggestions on the compression type? My art is moving stills from paintings, very ambient.

I take it you just want to get the songs onto DVD If you put all of them in one sequence (timeline) what is the total length?
iDVD will allow you to export up to two hours of video regardless of file size
Export as Quicktime Movie (not Quicktime Conversion) and import that into iDVD ..or DVD Studio Pro for that matter
Quicktime Movie will keep the "native" quality of your FCE project.

Reduce movie size after export

Hi,
I have one problem during export movie from Premiere Pro CS4 would like every body help.
I create one project from Premiere with the setting as Picture 1, 2 as below. After that, I import files to project (file format: .mov or AE file or avi) to edit. All files is NTSC DV Widescreen setting.
When I export to "Test.avi" format from Premiere, I also choose NTSC DV Widescreen with DV NTSC video code. This file can see full resolution on computer, it's no problem. But if I burn this file to DVD order to play on DVD Player, It can't see full resolution as original (for example as below picture, out side the red border can't see on the TV).
I don't know what problem because the file is exported from After Effects, I burn to play on DVD Player, it's no problem. But import to Premiere and burn to DVD, it have problem.
I think the computer is problem so I format and reinstall windows but it's same.
So please help me to solution this problem.

Question about reducing PDF file size on export

I have a large file that is generates a PDF about 75MB when exported with the "[High Quality Print]" preset. However, I can reduce the size down to to under 5MG in Acrobat if I use the Tools>Flattener Preview>[Medium Resolution] setting (image attached). Is there a way to generate this smaller file directly from InDesign? I couldn't figure out how to do this with InDesign's Flattener Preview or Export options, but it is very likely that I missed something.

Flattening transparency in InDesign will not necessarily yield a smaller PDF file size. Having trouble reducing PDF file size on export

Hi, I recently switched from Quark to InDesign and am having trouble figuring out how to reduce the size of a PDF on export.
The file has about 200 pages with about 300 EPS files, which are approximately 30-40K each. The file uses fewer than 10 fonts, all from two font families (Bembo Std and Univers Std). When I created a similar file in Quark, the exported PDF is ~5MG. However, when I export the file I created in InDesign, the PDF is 10xs larger (~50MG). I tried exporting using the High Quality Print and Smallest File Size settings, but the result was the same. (I think that is because there are no JPG images to compress, just vector files which are already tiny.)
If you have any suggestions for other settings to check, I would be grateful for the help. Overall, other than this issue, I have been extremely happy with InDesign.
I am using CS5, v 7.0.4 on Mac OS X (10.6.8, Snow Leopard)

Quark to the best of my knowledge still goes the Postscript to PDF route - I'm not 100% sure on that.

Distilling is very much frowned upon, and Export from InDesign is considered the best workflow.And the file size is larger, but it does add a lot of important information to the PDF, which makes it superior than distilling.
But, there's a lot of document overhead in PDFs.
The High Quality setting is only meant as a guide. It's not meant to be used, in my opinion, out of the box.

And besides that EPS files are considered legacy files by Adobe, I'm not sure how they're handled on PDF export. But you'd be better off saving to .ai from illustrator from now on.

Instead of EPS from photoshop - save as TIFF or PSD if all Raster. If it's raster + vector text layers, shapes or masks then save to PDF.

Reduce File Size in Acrobat Pro (9.5.5) Corrupts Graphics in PDF Documents - shows up as black image

Whenever I use Reduce File Size in Acrobat Pro (9.5.5), sometimes some of the images (not all) get corrupted and show up as a black image in the new document.
Actually, the new reduced document looks okay when viewed in Acrobat, but the problem shows up when viewed in the Preview application on the Mac.
I'm using Acrobat 9.5.5 with Mac OS 10.8.6
I've tried re-importing the graphic into a new graphic box, which didn't work. Thinking there may be some type of corruption with the actual graphic file, I then tried viewing the graphic, then taking a screenshot of it to create a completely new file, and then re-importing the new graphic file into the original document (created in Adobe In Design 5.0.4). I then export the new document as a pdf, and brought it into Acrobat Pro to do the Reduce File Size. Same thing happens - black box appears where the graphic was.
I then tried using the Reduce File Size within the Save As function of the Preview application on the Mac - while the graphic remains intact, many of the other graphics in the document are "reduced" too much, to the point where the image quality is seriously degraded, and therefore not usable.
Any other ideas?

Is there a way to reduce the size of my PDF file, created (or I should say, Exported) in InDesign.

I created a 10-page sale flyer in InDesign CS5 which will be viewed on our website. When I export it as a PDF file, even with the compression at "minimum", the size is still 3.8 MB.
Is there a way to reduce the size of the PDF file? with InDesign or another tool out there?

Yup, a logo as bitmap takes up more space than the same as a vector -- unless the vector image is bitmap heavy (think Drop Shadow, Outline Glow; these are actually bitmap effects).
Also, check your PDF version. "Older" versions do not support live transparency, the latest do. Then again, you cannot use live transparency if you suspect your viewers may be using Mac OS X, because Apple's own PDF viewer sucks big time.

Reduce file size w/o blurring up my images?

I have a Pages (iWork '09) document with a lot of images (screenshots) in it. Many of these are large shots where I've used the mask option to hide what I don't need. The file is pretty large, even when I export it to PDF. Using the Reduce File Size option turns my screenshots into a blurry mess. Is there are way to get rid of the cropped areas w/o mucking with the image resolutions? Most of the pics were screenshots from Evernote dropped into the Pages file.
Short of that, will exporting to PDF and using Adobe Acrobat Pro's file optimization do the trick w/o blurring things up too badly?

Thanks for that. I was hoping I had independent control of cropping. I'll just have to do the cropping manually and rely on masking for trimming out little bits of things. I'm coming to Pages after years with Word, which allows more control when it comes to dumbing down images. I really like composing things in Pages. Now I just have to learn the best ways to get quality output w/o huge file sizes.

Reduce FILE size, but not IMAGE size

pardon the blasphemy, but on windows, Paint lets you "stretch" an image to 99%, which reduces the size of the image practically not at all but reduces the file size big time, you know like a 600kb file reduced to 99% the size of the originals ends up at 60kb, or whatever, but is only a few pixels smaller in size. How would i do that on my mac? tried the export thing, but if you reduce size a few pixels, you get bigger file size... know what i'm asking?

Where are you getting this screen? In iPhoto after selecting the File ➙ Export menu option? If that's the case try this:
1 - delete the iPhoto preference file, com.apple.iPhoto.plist, that resides in your Home/() Library/Preferences folder.
2 - delete iPhoto's cache file, Cache.db, that is located in your Home()/Library/Caches/com.apple.iPhoto folder.
3 - launch iPhoto and try again.
NOTE: If you're moved your library from its default location in your Home/Pictures folder you will have to point iPhoto to its new location when you next open iPhoto by holding down the Option key when launching iPhoto. You'll also have to reset the iPhoto's various preferences..
You can resize photos outside of iPhoto with 3rd party applications like Resize!.

Reduce File Size causes images to be blurry

I created a document in Pages '09 that contains several masked images, resulting in a really large file size. I clicked Reduce File Size to get rid of the cropped parts of the images. Unfortunately, the images are now blurry. Any way to mask or crop a picture, or use Reduce File Size, without loss of image quality?

The images are being reduced to 72dpi with no sharpening that I can see and the excess image outside the masking shape doesn't seem to get trimmed. I suspect you then saved to a pdf with a lower quality setting which would have given a 2nd reduction in quality on top of the first.
So the best option is to take your images into Preview, crop them, reduce their resolution and sharpen them then bring them back into your Pages layout before exporting to pdf.
