Images shift after closing iphoto?

Each time that I close the book feature on iphoto- a few pictures will shift. I edited these images to the 4x3 book ratio, cropped them, save the changes and then will recenter the image- but they will still shift. It's pretty random.
I fixed these errors and then uploaded and bought two- 78 page books. I am now concerned that without seeing a final proof- other images will shift over.
How do a pre-proof the file that will be printed.
Thanks in advance for your pointers and advice! spence

Hi spence,
Old Toad (our form guru) has a hint for finding the temporary PDF that iPhoto compiles that is uploaded to Apple.
Here's how you find the pdf file:
How to Find the iPhoto Generated PDF File:
1 - Start the ordering process and stop after the book has been assembled and you get to the Order pane where you select the cover color, copies, etc.
2 - Go to the Finder and select the Go->Go to Folder menu item (CommandShiftG).
3 - copy the following, “/private/var/tmp/folders.501/TemporaryItems/iPhoto” (for Panther the path is ‘/private/tmp/501/TemporaryItems/iPhoto “), and paste into the Go to Folder search box.
4 - the iPhoto folder will be brought up. In it will be the PDF file that was generated by iPhoto. You can copy it (Option-drag) to the Desktop to review and/or save.
Note: the iPhoto folder will not exist before you start the ordering process and is deleted after the order is completed or after you cancel the order and quit iPhoto.
The preceeding was developed on Tiger but should work with Panther.

• After closing iphoto and restarting Albums dissapear

library is kept on a Zip disk. After closing iPhoto and restarting all the albums dissappear. Pics are still in the library but all albums and sorted pics are gone. I'm getting ready to go back to "Jpeg View".

Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:
~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.Safari.plist
Right-click or control-click the highlighted line and select
Services ▹ Show Info in Finder (or just Show Info)
from the contextual menu.* An Info dialog should open.
☞ Does the dialog show "You can read and write" in the Sharing & Permissions section?
☞ In the General section, is the box labeled Locked checked?
☞ What is the Modified date?
If you don't have read and write access to the item, change the settings as directed here. Note, however, that if one file has wrong access settings, most likely others do as well. If the item is locked, unlock it.
*If you don't see the contextual menu item, copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Open a TextEdit window and paste into it (command-V). Select the line you just pasted and continue as above.

• Recently added photos/movies missing after closing iPhoto '09

I have iPhoto '09 (8.1.2 (424) running on an Intel iMac Core (1) Duo with Snow Leopard, all software updates current. Tonight I went to add several photos and movies to my iPhoto library (19,000+ photos). They imported fine. I moved some around with respect to events, fixed some dates, but did no photo edits. Then I closed iPhoto. When I opened it back up, all of the recently added photos were gone. The "Last Import" said "(0)". I found the photos/movies sitting in my iPhoto library in the file structure and could open them up and view them with Preview or Quicktime, respectively. But iPhoto didn't know they were there. I tried to drag and drop them into iPhoto again and it wouldn't let me, saying they are already in the library. I was able to reimport from the original location on my desktop and after closing and re-opening, same thing, no photos in iPhoto but another copy of them in the "iPhoto Library package > Originals > 2011 > ..."
This is repeatable. I can delete the folders I added then reimport and after closing and re-opening, nothing. I've rebuilt the library 2 times using command+option with all options selected except "rebuild from automatic backups." I can drag just one image into iPhoto from the bunch and it disappears to after a close+reopen. I have not yet tried to do a camera-based import. These are files on my desktop.
Lastly, I think this may be a red herring, but I just recovered from a HD crash last week. I got a new HD installed by professionals and did all the new installs to Snow Leopard and restore from my time machine backups myself. Everything looks/works like it did before the crash, except one of the user's (4 of us on this machine) desktop was missing their background pic and had to re-add it. All the other user's desktop pics were fine. This desktop pic was associated with the iphoto library I'm having the problem with. I just realized after talking with my wife that all the pictures she has added since the crash have had the same behaviour and are sitting in the iphoto library package but are not in the iPhoto library "viewer" when iPhoto is open.

The Library database is corrupted.
Best option: restore from back up. Otherwise:
Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Rebuild iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup.
If that fails:
Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one. .

• Image remains after closing window.

Hi!
I just purchased my first LCD display (23" Apple) and I immediately noticed an anomaly. When I have a window open, such as mail, after closing, the image of the window remains faintly on the desk top. I can even read the title of the last email etc. The image slowly fades away and disappears but it's somewhat unnerving. An image even remained from the previous user after I switched.
Is this common? Just a "thing" that LCDs do? After all the hype about xboxes burning in on plasma TVs, I'm a little paranoid.
Thanks to all for your advice and council !
Jeff

Hey Jeff -
I had a problem with my 23 ghosting a good while back, but I changed the desktop and I haven't noticed it since, I have read of others mentioning the problem, try searching this folder for "ghost".
This document has some information but from reading posts in the past I suspect the ghosting is partially a hardware issue and some monitors of the same model have it worse than others.

• IPhoto images missing in Edit window after importing iPhoto albums folder

A friend of mine with new macbook tried to import her iPhoto images from an external hardrive. She move it to her user photo album and then i believe she tried to point to it after launching iphoto. She told me there were some options windows popping up and she does not remember what they said but the current result is that many of her photos do not appear when she clicks on the thumb nails to edit them: said there is a grey field with a questin mark.
My thought was to somehow repoint to the file or dump the .plst file.
Any ideas?
Thank you,
todd

Todd
The question mark shows up when the link between the thumbnail in the iPhoto Window loses the location of the file it points to.
The most common cause of this is User activity in the iPhoto Library Folder. It is strongly advised that you do not move, change or in anyway alter things in the iPhoto Library Folder as this can cause the application to fail and even lead to data loss.
As your friend now sees.
Unless your friend nows exactly what changes she has made, I'm afraid the best way to fix this is to start again, importing from your originals folder.
There are comprehensive instructions for moving the iPhoto Library Folder in the Help, or if you need more you can most on here.

• Step backward multiple images after closing?

Hi, this is probably a really easy solution I'm just totally missing.
I can't think of/ find a way to go back in the history multiple steps, with multiple photos, after closing and re-opening Lightroom.
I've tried selecting the images I need and undo-ing with auto-sync on -nothing, tried doing it in the Library module -nothing.
I feel kind of dumb, but this seems like the solution should be more readily obvious.

I do not know of a way to do this in batch for several photos at the same time.
Do you have so many photos to undo?
I would go to develop module for each and go back in history, then move on to the next photo.
If you history steps are different for these photos I cannot imagine something else.
Or did you achieve the no-longer-desired steps for all photos in one go, by auto-synch'ing?
In that case it should work from develop module, too, to undo the history steps for one most-selected photo while auto-synch.

Can you help me?

• How do you Re-Open the Camera Raw Dialog box after closing it?

Hi All,
going crazy trying to figure out how to reopen the Camera Raw dialog box after closing it in photoshop. I know I found it once but have since forgetten. Any help would be much appreciated!
thx!
Jayson

When the image is open in ACR hold down the SHIFT key and you'll see the button marked Open Image changes to Open Object, so do your ACR adjustments then hold down shift and click Open Object - your image will open as a Smart Object in Photoshop.
If using Lightroom you can right click the image and select Edit>Open as Smart Object in Photoshop from the drop-down menu.
Do not confuse normal smart objects with what we're talking about here, Camera RAW Smart Objects - possibly one of the most powerful tools to have at your dispossal, once you understand them.
Hope this helps

• After closing Firefox, at times I have to use task manger to shut down firefox.exe*32 at times,

As my title says, after closing Firefox, at times I have to use task manger to shut down firefox.exe*32 at times. I've left it running for up to 5 minutes to see if it shuts down/closes and it doesn't. I've also reloaded Firefox. My system is a Lenovo H210 with 3 gig of Ram and no added video card, the OS is Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit SP1. I realize the memory is on the small side. I did try to update VLC player this morning to V 2.1.2 but it fails to run after instal due to file errors.

Hello,
Try Firefox Safe Mode to see if the problem goes away. Safe Mode is a troubleshooting mode, which disables most add-ons.
(If you're not using it, switch to the Default theme.)
* On Windows you can open Firefox 4.0+ in Safe Mode by holding the Shift key when you open the Firefox desktop or Start menu shortcut.
* On Mac you can open Firefox 4.0+ in Safe Mode by holding the option key while starting Firefox.
* On Linux you can open Firefox 4.0+ in Safe Mode by quitting Firefox and then going to your Terminal and running: firefox -safe-mode (you may need to specify the Firefox installation path e.g. /usr/lib/firefox)
* Or open the Help menu and click on the Restart with Add-ons Disabled... menu item while Firefox is running.

Once you get the pop-up, just select "'Start in Safe Mode"

If the issue is not present in Firefox Safe Mode, your problem is probably caused by an extension, and you need to figure out which one. Please follow the Troubleshooting extensions and themes article for that.
To exit the Firefox Safe Mode, just close Firefox and wait a few seconds before opening Firefox for normal use again.
When you figure out what's causing your issues, please let us know. It might help other users who have the same problem.
Thank you.

I don't think you quite understand how Time Machine really works. But then hardly anyone does. Time Machine is intended to be left enabled always whether a backup drive is connected or not. What Time Machine cannot handle properly is a situation where the backup drive loses power for whatever reason. Time Machine treats this, as does the OS, as an improper disconnect of an external drive without being properly ejected. This in turn throws Time Machine a little bit of a loop.
For you I would suggest not using Time Machine. Instead use a third-party backup utility that you can either schedule or run manually as you wish. They will work with the same drive you have used for Time Machine, but you will need to first erase the Time Machine drive using Disk Utility. Please DO NOT try dragging the Time Machine backups to the Trash.
Here are some good backup utilities you can try:
Suggested Backup Software
      1. Carbon Copy Cloner
      2. Get Backup
      3. Deja Vu
      4. SuperDuper!
      5. Synk Pro
      6. Tri-Backup
Others may be found at MacUpdate. Each one can be used for a trial period. No need to pay for one until you've decided on which one you like best. I, for example, use Carbon Copy Cloner but please don't take that as a recommendation over the others. It's just my preference. All can be operated manually or can be set up to backup on a schedule you determine. Some can even be set up to backup as soon as the backup drive is connected.

• Firefox claims that it is already running and will not let me start a new session after closing out

I've been having this problem intermittently on both my Dell XPS 8000 and my HP nx7400 laptop. The Dell is running the latest version of Windows 7 Pro and the HP is running XP Pro (fully updated). After closing out of a Firefox session and running other apps, Firefox will not let me initiate another session, saying that "Firefox is already running... Please close the session..." That's not an exact quote, but you get the idea. CTRL-ALT-DEL and all other conventional means don't work and I am forced to reboot the system. This is a royal pain.. and I need some pain relief! Any suggestions? I may revert to an earlier version of Firefox until I see a solution... can't hurt, but I really like 4.0 and I don't look at going backwards as "progress."
Thanks.

• Comparing counts after conversion: iPhoto to Aperture

Well, I just finished a major conversion from iPhoto to Aperture. 47,000 photos and videos in a 303 gigabyte iPhoto Library. It was a long and winding road, and I learned a lot about how to compare counts of photos and videos between iPhoto and Aperture. I hope this information helps someone spend a few less hours on the task than I had to.
After an iPhoto-Aperture library conversion, the first check you'll probably want to do, to confirm all went well, is to compare the number of photos and/or videos reported from each application. You'll probably compare the overall total, and/or the total for important subgroups (say, all photos keyworded "family".) Here are some things to be aware of:
- You can run iPhoto and Aperture at the same time, even if Aperture is referencing the photos in their iPhoto library locations. This can make various count comparisons easy. Sometimes though I found the apps suddenly bogged down, and I had to quit one of the two to recover (this was on a 4GB 2.93 GHz iMac).
- Whether your Aperture "stacks" are open or closed affects the photo count reported by Aperture. If you edit an original photo in iPhoto, in the end all you see is edited photo, the original is preserved but tucked away unseen. In terms of a photo count, you still have just one photo. When this photo is imported into Aperture, it comes in as a 2-photo stack (original & edited). If you stacks are closed, your counts should match; if your stacks are open, Aperture will be higher.
- Photos "hidden" in iPhoto come in as "rejects" in Aperture (i.e. a rating of "X" on a scale of X,1,2,3,4 or 5 stars). When the search box in Aperture says "Showing All," you are including the rejects in the count (that is, the count appearing at the bottom of the window in browser mode). If it says "Unrated or better," the rejects are not being counted. Make sure you are consistently including or excluding hidden/rejects when comparing numbers.
- Formats supported by iPhoto but not by Aperture. I have some old (pre-OS X) screenshots in PICT format. Viewable just fine in iPhoto, but they do not get imported into Aperture.
- Some video formats (in my case, MPEG1 Muxed) are imported into Aperture, but are not playable within Aperture, and do not show up if you filter on File Type = Video (that last part seems just plain wrong behavior).
- Every count I saw in Aperture included videos, even when the count was labeled "Photos" (e.g. "23,434 Photos"—you'll see this under Projects, if you group by folder)
- I did have a few items that were *just plain skipped*, with no error dialog, by the import. Scary. But in every case, there was evidence of a problem in iPhoto: I would see a fine thumbnail, but if I tried to open the photo or video, I'd see a gray exclamation point where the photo/video should appear. In every case I successfully found an valid original (in the iPhoto "Originals" folder) and moved it manually into Aperture. Problem is, are you going to try and view every photo you have in iPhoto, checking for exclamation points? I tracked my missing photos/videos down by painstakingly comparing counts in matching slices of time (say, August 2006) in iPhoto and Aperture. When I narrowed a count discrepancy to a set of 100 pics or so, I compared thumbnails between the 2 apps until I found the item missing from Aperture. Not fun.
I hope this helps somebody. Now that I've made the switch, I have a love-hate relationship with Aperture. Mostly love. But that is a separate post. Aperture is also my first Pro app from Apple, and iPhoto and Aperture make a fascinating case study in contrasting user interface design (freedom from choice vs. options galore). Also a topic for another post.
Mike M

Hey, thanks for the comprehensive post. It helped me quite a bit and probably saved me a lot of time; I'm sure it did the same to a lot of people who didn't have an account here as well.

• After updating iPhoto to 9.2 Photoshop CS2 doesn't display the photo I have opened.  The photo shows in the Navigator on the side panel, but not on the screen.  MFF

After updating iPhoto to 9.2, Photoshop CS2 doesn't display the photo on the desktop screen, even though the image is shown in the Navigator pallet well to the right.

No, that is the problem.  I don't see how it should be, but that is what happened after I did the upgrade, which was for iPhoto 9.2.  The upgrade then required that the Library be upgraded.  Then CS2 stopped showing the photo when I opened CS2.  Maybe there was a system upgrade for the whole system, that went along with 9.2.  Before the upgrade CS2 worked.  I even tried photos that I had on backup disks, and they wouldn't show in CS2 even though I had draged them to the PS icon in the dock.  These photos were not on my computer when the Library was upgraded.  I even tried photos fresh from the camera. Elements 9 does work to open the photos.

• Images kept after deletion

IPhoto 9.5.1 will keep images even after deleted AND trash is emptied.
I have Repaired the database, Rebuilt the Database and the images I can see in the master and thumbnail folders inside the actual library do not show up so they can be deleted.  They did at one time exist in the library, they were deleted and the trash emptied.  I am trying to find a way to have iPhoto clean itself.
Here are suggestions I can say I reject right now.  I will not extract all the images and import to a new library.  That is stupid since faces, locations and all organization is lost.  I take RAW and adjustments will be lost or the Raw lost.  I am looking for a apple or a representative to acknowledge a serious shortcoming in the software.  None of the tools that come in iPhoto can retrieve the images nor delete the images.  I could manually do it but this is a continual issue and a real Hard disk hog when deletion does not delete the files
Anyone found a real solution to this?

I am looking for a apple or a representative to acknowledge a serious shortcoming in the software.  None of the tools that come in iPhoto can retrieve the images nor delete the images.
This is a User-to-User forum, so it is unlikely, that Apple representatives will post here to acknowledge shortcomings of the software.
But there is a well-known problem with iPhoto's trash.
If you put too many photos into the Trash at once, the Trash cannot be emptied.
If you put  photos into the Trash and then merge the events the photos were in with other events, they will stay in the library, even after you emptied the trash.
If your iPhoto library is on an unsupported drive, it may not be possible to move the photos to the trash (a network volume or unsupported filesystem)
I think, your problem is (2). You said, that our build the library. Did you see a "recovered" items event after you rebuild the library? If yes, mot of the photos, that had not been deleted, should have been collected in that event, and you can delete them from that event.
Else try to rebuild the library with iPhotoLibrary Manager as described by Old Toad in this post:
Re: Copying saved iphoto library from external hard drive back to Macbook Pro
The important part is:
make sure that in the rebuild window the checkbox  "Scavange orphaned photos" is checked.

• Aperture 3 will not load again after closing it without repair of database or permissions

I have Max OS X 10.8.5 on a Late 2009 iMac with 12 gb of RAM.
Repeatedly when I try to reopen Aperture 3 after closing it (and the prior close is a normal close without issue), I find aperture never loads. The icon in the tray says it's running but the window never opens.
The only thing I can do is Force Quit. Then if I'm lucky, I can open it again using the troubleshooting key combination and can select to repair database or repair permissions, and it will load.
This basically makes me never want to close it but sometimes it would be nice to do so. I'm also very worried about my library getting hammered and unusable eventually.
I have sent the reports to Apple but I'm not sure if anything will come of that.
The library size is 442 gb.
Any advice is appreciated.

Hi léonie,
I have version 3.4.5 of Aperture 3.
My library is stored on an external hard drive. A LaCie 1TB drive.
I do not share the library between multiple users. I have occasionally opened the library in iPhoto since I upgraded both Aperture and iPhoto. Often I open in iPhoto because iPhoto doesn't seem to have the same problem opening the library that Aperture continues to have. So if Aperture is closed and I need a quick print out or copy of a photo that is in the Aperture library, I can reliably open it in iPhoto to get that accomplished quickly.
I cannot pinpoint an event that led to the trouble. It's been going on for many months now, and I've reached the conclusion that no combination of repairs of the library are helping and I should reach out to you all.
Thank you.
