Images with black blotches showing up.

I have a wierd problem with picture quality that just started showing up.
The black detail in certain areas of the picture is becoming overly black. Blotchy black areas especially on the screen and in prints. Black detail becoming overly compressed. The gradation between light and dark on my 23 HD and 17 Cinema display shows as layers of black, not a continual gradation to black. To explain it another way, the gradation of black colors (when going from light to dark to black) appears on the screen almost like Newton's Rings. I'm starting to get blotches of black in the darker areas of my monitor images and now on the prints. All the pictures are RAW (shot in Adobe 1998) from a Nikon D70s. None of the images have been altered in any way. No color correction, exposure increase or decrease, nothing. Straight RAW files imported directly into Aperture from the camera. I have printed all these pictures before and they looked fine. Now they have these black blotches in them. Not all pictures have the problem but the ones that have the darker black gradations (primarily to deep black).
I have a custom .ICC profile I use for printing and the monitor was calibrated too, using ColorVision tools. Spider2Pro and PrintFix Pro. But even is I use the standard profiles for the monitor and the printer, it's still the same.
The wired thing is, if I open the image with an external editor, Photoshop CS2, I do NOT get the same problems on the screen as I do with Aperture. (I have not printed yet from Photoshop CS 2 since this started, only viewed.)
This is just a recent problem, and as I said, I have been printing the same pictures before and viewed the same pictures before with no problems. I noticed this starting to happen after the last 2 updates for Aperture, and it has progressively gotten worse.
Any picture that has a continual gradation from a light black to dark black to full black has this problem. (On a 9 zone gray scale - say zone 5 thru 9)
Equipment Notes: Aperture 1.1.2, Mac OS 10.4.7, Apple 23 HD display, Apple 17 Cinema Display, Dual 2 GHZ PowerPC G5, 3.5 GB RAM, 2 SATA internal Hard Drives, (the one with Aperture has 30 GB's left on it and the other that I use as Vault Back-Up has 164 GB's available. Video Card - ATI Radeon 9600 Pro, AGP bus, 64 MB RAM
Epson Printer - R2400, using K3 inks on Premium PhotoLuster paper.
Does anyone else have this problem? Do you know how I send this problem to the Aperture Team?
P.S.
I too have notice a tremendous slow down in Aperture as of late as other people have stated.
I too sometimes don't get a image in the viewer. I sometimes only get the Right half of an image in the view. I can get other pictures to the left and to the right of the image in question but Aperture sometimes just picks a picture to only give me half. I must shut down and re-open Aperture to get the complete picture on the screen again. I can't figure that one out.
Thanks,
Jim

Well, besides my 2 previous posts, I would like to add something. I started printing and everything was going well once I turned On Screen Proofing off.
Oh, I guess I must first point out that I have calibrated my Monitor and Printer, using ColorVision's Spyder2Pro for the monitor and their PrintFIX Pro for the printer. It looks pretty good. But here is the problem.
As I started to say, after I turned off On Screen Proofing everything looked good, on my screen and my prints. I started to print using my Colorvision settings and my custom ColorVison printer profile. It worked for a while on some prints but I ran a print with a long gradation of black to deep black and that replicated my original problem. Blotchiness and striations of black. I found that if I printed with Epsons' ICC profile it was fine. So the ColorVision profile didn't work on some prints with deep gradations of blacks.
So I called their tech support. They asked if I did their 225patch target or the more extensive 700 patch target (I'm not sure of the correct number of patches). I had done the shorter 225.
They told me this is a common problem if you only do the 225 Patch Target and that I would have to do the 700 Patch Target to not get black patches/striations in my prints. As a note: the striations looked exactly like the On Screen Proofing problem when it was turned on.
So as it turns out, I had 2 problems at the same time.
I haven't done the 700 patch test yet. I'll let you know when I get it done, how it works out and if the On Screen Proofing matches the print as suggested by firstlaunch.
thanks for all your help and suggestions!

  • Image with transparent background shows up with a white background in ID

    Amateur needs help.
I have a copy of a logo with a transparent background.  I made the (white) background transparent in PS by creating a layer from background and then selecting the white color in the background and deleting it.  This has always worked in the past.  But when I place this image into ID, it shows up with a white background.  I have tried saving as a PSD, TIF, JPG, etc.  I cannot get it to work.
I normally research these things until I find an answer, but I am on a tight deadline.  Thanks!

I totally forgot to put that in my post.  Yes, I am putting logos with transparent backgrounds in front of colored rectangles.  That's how I noticed that this one logo is showing up with a white background.  The weird thing is that the other two logos are fine.  I did find a different version of this logo and this one works fine.  The one that works fine is a JPG and the one that shows up with a white background is a JPG.

  • IMAQ image with black squares

Hi. I'm using LabView to take a series of images with a camera. When I
preview the image in the camera's software it appears normal. I use
Labview/IMAQ and the VIs that came with the camera. The problem is that
the output TIFF files have this nasty black square checker pattern. I'm
making 8bit images. I there something I can change in IMAQ or the
output as TIFF that could explain this problem? Or is it likely
something in the third party VIs? I can explain more if need be.
    Thanks,

The first thing to check whether it is the 3rd party VI's or not.  You didn't even mention what kind of camera you are using, but whether you have a framebrabber or not, if you go to Measurement and Automation Explorer and try to do a snap there do you still see this behavior?  This is where you can directly interact with the driver to see what the software is interpreting from your camera.  Depending on what type of camera you have you may need a camera file.  You can check at www.ni.com/camera to see if we have one.  If not, you might check with the manufacturer, if they have VI's they might also have the camera file.  If you respond back please include what type of camera and framegrabber you are using.  Also, what type of video signal does the camera send out?  [If its is a standard you won't need the camera file]  Just let me know and we can work from there.

  • GigE camera - grab image with black bars

    Hi everyboby,
I am using Ni vision acquisition to grab images from a GigE camera.
I recieve images just as I trigger the camera - so fare so good.
Every other picture shows some black bars.
Does anyone has an idea what it could be?
It's not the hardware, the camera works perfect with the SDk form the manufacturer.
    Thanx for any help
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

Sounds like an incomplete frame, this could be caused by missing packets.  To prevent missing packets during acquisition you can do two key things: ensure the packet size configured on the camera does not exceed what the network adapter can handle, and ensure that the bandwidth of image data being output by the camera does not saturate interface bandwidth.  I would lower camera packet size to 1500 initially to determine if the packet size  is the cause of the problem.  You can throttle how much data the camera can send by manipulating the interpacket delay, some manufacturers have a very handy feature called StreamBytesPerSecond.  Depending on which mechanism you can use, increase interpacket delay or reduce StreamBytesPerSecond.

  • Images with clean lines show up with steping

I'm building some site content with flash and having a heck
of a time with "stepping" or pixelized looking edges on
very good quality crisp images. How can I stop this from
    happening?
I have also found this when creating flash galleries through
    Lightroom.
So I'm guessing it has something to do with either the
default way flash compresses or handles the image.
    How can I resolve this?
There must be a way to stop flash from doing this.

No there is no rotation applied to any images.
However many of the shots are architectural images and have
lines which are not 90 or 180 degrees.
these are the ones that show problems. Jagged edges which are
not cool and degrade the images
that are a very large part of the visual user experience.
Any ideas as to why this is happening and how to fix
    it?

  • When converting word doc to pdf, my images with text only show the background color of the text box.

I have a word doc that I am trying to conver to pdf.  I have jpegs with text boxes on top of them on one page.  It looks great on the screen but after I convert to pdf, the text boxes only have half the text, the first half of the text box is just white - the background color.  If I take the background color out of the text box, the text converts over fine but I need the background color.
I have tried many things here on the print settings, standard, high quality print, unchecking the compression on the images.  Any help?

  • How do I eliminate the black blotches associated with version sets.

I have just had to reload Elements 6.  Now I find that a lot of my people images carry version sets and show large black blotches usualy around the eye area.  Could someone tell me how to avoid and eliminate them. It can be achoieved by deleting some of the sets but I would like to know why theu have suddenlt apperaer after a reload and how to avoid the in the future.

Go back and check the preferences again. It may be (not sure) that you need to turn it off in the downloader first, then in the main preferences, but it should be sticky once you get it all disabled.
On newly imported photos, you can fix things by just selecting the whole batch then going to Edit>Version set>Revert to original to get rid of the version with the black spots.

  • Green images pixelated with black when opening in CS6

    Hi there,
I have just come across a puzzling problem.
I am editig some images of furniture I have taken. All images are OK apart from green ones? When I open them in PS CS6 they are havily pixelated on screen with black. When I save the image for web, the preview that opens up, then image is fine again. It seems to be just an on screen, in PS problem.
Any idea how to solve this, it's very annoying!
    Thanks,
    John

It's AMD that have been doing the tweaking/correcting. Catalyst 13.1 can be problematic for any version of Ps that uses OpenGL although you may not have exposed the problems until yesterday. Your example image shows the bug where a pixel with red component of zero is displayed as completely black.

    Hi,
I would try a Safe Boot first.  (This will take longer than a normal Boot and you will need to Restart afterwards).
If it were an older OS I would also suggest going to System Preferences > Displays and making sure the display is set to Millions.  (My MacBook Pro does not have this option in Snow Leopard so I did presume Snow Leopard does not have it).
With some laptops there have been some issues with the cable up the back of the screen pulling loose with regular and frequent use of the lid, but this will not apply to you based on your specs.  (it does take time to appear and is also somewhat rare). However it seems enough contact with the camera can make it appear in System Profiler and power it on but not give a pic.
If a Safe Boot does not work I would also try a PRAM reset.
    Shut down the computer.
Restart it holding down Apple/CMD (or ⌘)+ALT( ⌥)+P+R Keys until you have heard three Start Up Bongs.
This is actually "less" destructive in that it clears less memory items than Safe Boot but they are different enough to warrant trying.
Do you have an older version of iGlasses installed ?
The one for Leopard does not work for Snow Leopard.
Do you have  Web Browser open ?
This may point to  Google Video Chat Plug-in and Flash Conflict.  It would be rare to allow another app to access the camera even if not displayiong a Pic.
(Chrome Installs the Plug-in as does the standalone download).
Knowing  what "any application" exactly you are trying might help us pin it down.
Any additional downloaded  apps that can use the camera ?
Do you happen to have something balck in front of the camera ?

  • How can I get TV shows viewed through Hulu Plus on the Apple TV 3 to show as widescreen with black bands above and below the screen shot instead of chopping off the sides on my non-widescreen TV?

I just bought a new Apple TV 3 today so I can watch shows from Hulu Plus without having to physically plug in separate audio and video cables from my Macbook Air to the TV every time. I have a non-widescreen TV and when I normally watch Hulu Plus on the TV (though Safari on my plugged in Macbook Air as mentioned above), the entire wide screen shot is shown with black bands above and below the sceen shot since I am watching a widescreen program on a non-widescreen TV.
However, I noticed that when I watch the same show through Hulu Plus on my new Apple TV 3, the left and right edges of the shot are chopped off to make the program fill my non-widescreen TV. This bothers me because I would like to see the full shot and not just the chopped off middle portion. This is a real bummber because watching Hulu Plus without having to plug in my laptop is the only reason I bought the Apple TV. Is there anything I can do about this?
    Thanks!
(FYI: I have the very first Macbook Air that is not capable of mirroring)

How are you actually connected to the TV?  Does it have HDMI?  Most non-widescreen TVs would not.
I would suspect a converter is either not outputting properly, your TV not interpreting the signal properly or you have some form of Zoom setting enabled on the TV.
How does your TV handle widescreen from say cable or terrestrial TV sources ?
Unfortunately AppleTV is not designed to be used with non-widescreen TVs so there's no setting on AppleTV to tweak.

I have been working on an illustration in Photoshop for a few months now. When I tried to open it yesterday it came up as a single layered black image with a few red lines at the top. I have no idea what this is. I have not even used red in my artwork. However, no matter how many times open this file, the thumbnail still looks like my artwork, as it should be. How do I fix this? Will I be able to get my artwork back? Please help! Thank you in advance.

    Dave:
Terence isn't the jerk in this thread. He's was just attempting to give you a solution you can run yourself instead of having it given to you.
GraphicConverter can create a transparent file, a gif. Try the following workflow:
1 - first convert the file to a gif (use 89a) and save and reopen.
2 -select the Magic Pen and set it's sensitivity to about 40 (double click on it will bring up the setting pane).
3 - click on the black background to select all of the black.
4 - select to the Edit->Make Selection Transparent menu option.
    5 - save the file.
The black will turn to a checkerboard pattern indicating transparency. If you anticipate a lot of advance editing I suggest you look at Photoshop Elements. I find it much more powerful than GC and it supports layers which is a very powerful too. Here's an example of some of the advanced editing you can do with it.
    Do you Twango?
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've written an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.
