IMail and Hotmail Account

I have been trying to setup an iMail account using my @msn.com mail settings. Nothing I have tried seems to work in iMail. Anyone out there have a suggestion or know how to make this work? Appriciate any help....

First, just to let you know, it is not iMail, just Mail -- Apple doesn't use i in front of everything. Okay, now to the point... I know that Hotmail uses a technology called POP for Mail. But if you are using the free version of their email, they don't provide that service for you because they want you do log on to their website and look at the pretty advertisements that they put up. But if you are actually paying for your email service, then search the term "POP" and there will be detail instructions for setting up. Now, if you use the free one but also don't want to pay for the service, then I recommand Gmail, they are free and they allow you to use POP access.

You should be able to see two different tabs when setting up the email if you go to Other > Add Mail Account. Once you enter in the email address and password, you should be at the next screen to provide more details about the email as far as incoming and outgoing servers and at the top there will be a blue section to add it in as a POP or IMAP email account. Mail 4.6 unable to send outgoing mail (second gmail account and hotmail account)

I am able to receive mails but I cannot send outgoing mails on my second gmail account and hotmail account. Both smtp shows that it is "offline."

I am in the UK and eventually found the problem was due to my BT Home Hub Router.

There's an issue related to the BT homehub that is providing a hostname that is "syntactically incorrect" for several smtp server.
Here's how you can fix it.
Using your internet browser, go to the address "192.168.1.254
- Follow instructions to reset your password if asked.
- Then go to "Settings", then "Advanced Settings" and "home network"
You will see there all the devices that are connected or that has been connected before. It's gonna be easyer if yout computer is the only one connected.
Your computer should have a name like "unknown-xx:xx:xx:xx:xx ...
Click on this name, chose another name without any special characters, like "macbook" for exemple.
And then click on "apply"
- restart your computer.
That should fix the issue.

Hi,
I have recently reinstalled my mac to factory settings having cleared the HD. I then upgraded to OSMaverick for the first time and reinsatalled all my progames etc etc.
There are clearly some upgrades with Mail in Mavericks which look very nice. However, when i resync my hotmail account, it will only display the previous 350 or so emails in the inbox. (before the reinstal, Mail would display all 15000 emails from the past 5 years).
The rest of the emails appear to be in the trash folder as the following number is dispayed:15000. however when i click on the folder, there are no files actually in the folder.
How do access my old emails, and move them, into the inbox or somewhere else, so they are visable?
I know its some thing to do with the POP relationship, but its annoying that i previously didnt have this problem with Mail, and now i suddenly do, post upgrade.

You can also log into hotmail in a browser and see if the 15000 are visible in the trash there. If they are there create a new folder to move them into it. Then set up Mail for IMAP.
Its a bit 20th century using POP and keeping your entire archive in Inbox which is at the mercy of any POP client. Use folders and IMAP.

E52 (Nav. ed.) and Hotmail account

Ok. So I'm using the email app, after configuring Hotmail and Gmail.
All worked ok. I could, manually, update both my boxes.
Today, as usual, I try to manually update my email boxes, but, on the Hotmail account, the option is missing.
Plus, I can't send any emails from it.
I decide to remove the account, and re-add it.
Using pop3.live.com (default port) + smtp.live.com (port 25), the Hotmail box is re-added.
But, I can't connect to it, or update it. It just stays empty, despite the fact that I actually have emails unread in the inbox. I can't send any email either.
Meanwhile, the Gmail account, works perfectly, still allowing to update, and therefore, send and receive emails.
I don't know which is the firmware that came with the phone, I just know I didn't update it.
Do the new firmwares deal with issues with the email client?
Does anyone have an explanation for this? Maybe a fix?

You've to go in to settings-> e-mail-> highlight the mailbox-> options-> delete. If you're using Nokia Messaging you've to be online or check settings on your NM account with a PC.

Hi, I just started using mail. I like it, but I have a lot of folders in my hotmail account that are nicely arranged and have documents I like to refer to. Is there a way to bring these folders--the way I have them in my hotmail account into mail? Also, can I export my hotmail contact list to mail or address book? Finally, when I delete a message directly from mail is there a setting I can turn on so that it automatically deletes in my hotmail account as well? Thank You

No. hotmail provides POP access only. POP only provides access to inbox, not any other folders. this is a limitation of hotmail, not Mail. it would be the same in any other email client. if hotmail provided IMAP access you could get to all those mailboxes in Mail.

probably, but you have to check with hotmail. do they allow exporting address book contacts at all? if so you should be able to export them from hotmail and then import them into Address Book.

no. this is again a limitation of POP. you could do this with an IMAP account which syncs everything with the server so this would be automatic. if you want these features you might want to look into getting an IMAP account. gmail and AIM provide free IMAP accounts. mobileme is also IMAP but costs 100$ per year. but it offers many other features beside email too.

Lumia 800 and Hotmail account

In order to synchronize contacts and calendar you have to use Micosoft Hotmail. When you upload all your contacts then suddenly all your professional contacts (the plumber, the cinema, the opera, all your physicians are suddenly friends in Hotmail, when you leave the security settings in default position. To change these settings in Hotmail you have to go individually thru all your contacts and restrict the security settings for sharing info. Out of my 250 contacts I have only 20 to 30 friends. There is no way to define friends the other way around. For me it looks that contact sharing via Hotmail is missusing the purpose of hotmail. Hotmail was done for a differnt purpose. We would need an account especially for mail, contacts, tasks and notes synchronizing that is not part a social communication environment as Hotmail is. Otherwise a lot of people are excluded that don't want IM integration, picture sharing and so on when only sychronizing.
The calendar upload is also very delicate since you don't want to maintain a local calender and an Hotmail calendar. I used the Outlook Connector. The upload was 6000 elements (the last 10 years) . I kow, that the Lumia only loads the last two weeks of the 10 years but I don't want to work with two calendar files.The upload crashed in the middle. For Outlook it was completed but the events didn't show up in Hotmail calendar on WEB. Only when you deinstall the Outlook calendar, delete the OST file and reinstall it again, the synch finds the uploaded elements (up to the crash) and you can upload the rest. This btw takes hours until all show up in the Hotmail calendar in WEB. BTW there is no way in Hotmail WEB to delete the calender up to a certain date. You can only individually delete calender elements. Therefore you always need Outlook with the Connector as frontend.
Do I understand all this correctly?
If yes then we need a better solution for sharing contacts and calendars.

Hotmail does not support IMAP. However, it supports POP3. And with POP3 your observered behaviour is as expected. There is a nasty trick, change the settings on your computer not to download, but to keep your mails on your server. Then, everything stays on your server and your mobile device sees those mails, as well. However, it is a nasty trick because your INBOX is getting very big plus POP3 is not designed to be used this way. On the long run, you will have the wildest errors and propably message losses.
There are two additional tricks, Hotmail supports Exchange (m.hotmail.com) and a Web interface. Consequently, reconfigure your computer at home to use either Exchange or stick to the Web interface. Did that help?

it's the only email that you can access your email via POP with ANY email client.
all others (Hotmail, Yahoo, Apple, etc) require a monthly/yearly fee to access it.

Why is my wife's hotmail account on her iphone draining her battery with usage and standby being the same? My iphone and hotmail does not do this.

My wife and I both have an Iphone 5 and hotmail accounts.
We are on the same wifi and I have restored and reset her phone several times, but whenever I add her hotmail account to her phone, the phone is always in use according to the usage. also the phone becomes warm as if it was in use for several hours. The standby time is only about 2-3 hours before dying. However, removing her hotmail account, stops this. What about the hotmail account is causing this?

What you're describing is the expected behaviour. I believe though that is also is the easiest way to have all the contents available to both of you at all times. If you have a spacious hard drive you should probably allow this to happen as anything else will be harder to manage.
My suggestion would be the following if you want to try something different.
Store all your music at a location that is accessible by both of you — an example would be to use your Public Folder as the locations where iTunes will go and look for all the media files—. Your wife does have access to it.
In the Finder you will need to move the folder name iTunes Music to the location in your Public Folder (see above). Once that's done, you and your wife will have to go into the iTunes Preferences > Advance Preferences and un-check Copy files to iTunes Media folder when adding to library. From this point on, you can continue to use iTunes as usual. You'll need to tell your wife what has been newly downloaded/imported into your iTunes so she can manually go look for those items in that Public Folder iTunes of yours and import them into her iTunes. She will not duplicate by doing that, but, like I say this is an all-manual work.
She can do the same, so you have access to contents she imported herself. One more downside of this is that both usernames have to be active in your iMac. If yours isn't, she won't be able to access any item (song, book, app) located in your Public Folder's iTunes.
I'm sure there's a way, if you have an router with external hard drive conectivity, for both of you to be able to access —independently— the iTunes Media at all times but I was just reading at another post that doing so can further complicate things.
