IMAP check mail every "X" minutes?  Why?

Isnt IMAP supposed to conenct live to the server and deliver the message AS IT IS RECEIVED?
For some reason mail3 only checks mail every "X" minutes. Fine for POP3, not so cool for IMAP.
Running thunderbird on another box and mail3 on my mac watching messages instantly received by thunderbird, then come stumbling in on my mac several minutes delayed makes me wonder how much of an IMAP client mail3 really is.

Only if both the client and server support the IDLE extension.

Mail on OS X has never supported the IDLE extension, and from what I've seen so far, the new version is very flaky at best. We can only hope for a fix in the next update.

  • Checking Mail Every 0 Minutes

I just got a message from my campus IT department asking all e-mail users to set their IMAP clients to check every 0 minutes to reduce the frequency with which the e-mail database needs to be loaded into RAM. (i.e. to maintain a continual connection to the server) It also requires that I set a maximum number of server connections to 2.
It says that MacMail can't do this, and that I must switch to Mozilla. But, well, I don't like Mozilla. Is there any way to force MacMail to do continual IMAP connections and to cap server connections? Perhaps a handy freeware extension somewhere?

Here's what the directions I got said:
Every time the mail server either delivers a new email message, or
accepts a new IMAP connection, it has to read the users' INBOX into
the server's RAM. While the mail server has enough RAM to handle
this, this means there's a lot of disk access when starting up a new
    IMAP connection.
Then for things we should make sure are configured right on our mail clients:
    * 'Check for new messages' needs to be set to '0'. This tells the
mail client to stay connected to the IMAP server. Else, it
disconnects and reconnects every few minutes, causing the mail
server to re-read your INBOX into RAM every time.
    * 'Max number of server connections' should be set to '2'. Large
numbers of (or unlimited) connections causes the IMAP server to open
your mailboxes multiple times. Each one requires your INBOX to be
read into memory, which leads to the disk problem all over again.
Personally, it sounds to me like they have a terribly configured IMAP server or don't know what the heck they're doing, but that's neither here nor there.

  • Version 2.1 won't fetch mail every 15 minutes, even if it is set to fetch!

    Hello,
Ever since I upgraded to 2.1, my iPod won't fetch mail every 15 minutes while it is off. It only fetch 2 times per day. In version 2.0, it used to fetch new mail even when it was not in use, and the icon would display if I have new mail. Now it only fetches when I open the mail app. My settings are all correct. Has anyone else noticed this?

Same exact issue. Mail only checks if I manually open the Mail App. Old iPod Touch checked right after power on but new one won't check and show me the "new messages" red circle thing. A fix would be nice because I'm betting this is software, not settings or anything on our end.

  • Which drains battery worse - yahoo push or checking every 15 minutes?

Just wondering whether yahoo's push, which I suppose requires a continuous connection, uses more battery than checking mail every 15 minutes, or every 30 minutes. I'll try the experiment myself, but I'm wondering if anyone's already done it.

I have .MAC email account and opened up a yahoo email. I use both. With my .MAC account I have it check every 15 minutes and using both of them I dont have to rechange but every other day.

  • Treo keeps checking mail even though set to manual update

I have my email update set to manual.  But my 800W keeps checking for email.  It's running my battery down.  Short of deleting the email account and starting over, what am I doing wrong?
Background: When I first got the phone, I stupidly set it to check mail every few minutes until I realized that ran my battery down in about 5 hours.  I set it to 'once per day' and it worked fine.  Then a couple of weeks ago, I temporarily set it to 5 minutes or something like that for a specific situation.  I then tried to change it back to once per day and/or manual.  The value shows 'once per day' on the options page.  But it ignores it now.  Not sure how often it checks.  But i get email notifications almost instantly every time an email arrives.  And my battery is dying again.  I've tried changing it around several times, rebooting, etc.
Anybody ever seen this?  Am I missing something obvious?
    Thx
Post relates to: Treo 800w (Sprint)

Thanks for the response.  I had long since tried everything you suggested.
I did quite a bit more testing and googling, and  I think I've resolved it.  But there are definitely some serious problems (My feeling is that these are code defects) in the 800w that caused this.
    1) I created a new email account on my 800w, taking all of the default values
    2) I set the email scheduler refresh rate on the account settings page to 1 day.  But I found later that it made no difference what I set it to.  Same results
    3) I have my own hosting business and host my own email pop server.  So I have easy access to the POP logs.  Here is a snippit from the pop logs with "refresh rate = 1 day":
    12/12/08 21:07:31 INFO  pop3server: Connection for treo.************************.com from 174-149-227-149.pools.spcsdns.net
    12/12/08 21:08:40 INFO  pop3server: Connection for treo.************************.com from 174-149-227-149.pools.spcsdns.net
    12/12/08 21:09:52 INFO  pop3server: Connection for treo.************************.com from 174-149-227-149.pools.spcsdns.net
    12/12/08 21:11:04 INFO  pop3server: Connection for treo.************************.com from 174-149-227-149.pools.spcsdns.net
    12/12/08 21:12:16 INFO  pop3server: Connection for treo.************************.com from 174-149-227-149.pools.spcsdns.net
    12/12/08 21:13:28 INFO  pop3server: Connection for treo.************************.com from 174-149-227-149.pools.spcsdns.net
    12/12/08 21:14:40 INFO  pop3server: Connection for treo.************************.com from 174-149-227-149.pools.spcsdns.net
    12/12/08 21:15:53 INFO  pop3server: Connection for treo.************************.com from 174-149-227-149.pools.spcsdns.net
    4) Note the time between each line.  It's basically exactly 1 minute + 10-13 seconds.  The 10-13 seconds is the processing of the POP call.  When the POP call ends, it waits precisely one minute and checks again.  I want to point out that there isn't even an OPTION on the refresh menu on the 800w to refresh once a minute. But it is indisputable from the log on my mail server that this is indeed what is happening.  (I set up that pop mailbox specifically for my treo, and no other client mail app is accessing it.)
    5) I changed all the values on the refresh time menu, and even turned off 'Send/receive when I send" option.  I wasn't sending anyway.  But I was just grasping at straws.
    6) I then discovered that there are TWO places to set the refresh rate (???? that's a good design????).  If you open the inbox and select Delivery Preferences from the menu, there is ANOTHER checkbox to "Connect and check for messages every...." with an entry field to enter the number of minutes.
    7) Ok.. this is the defect in the code:  That checkbox was OFF, and the entry field was gray.  That obvious has to mean that I don't want to autocheck anything.  (and that is the default way it comes up on a new account, which makes sense).   But it appears the checkbox is being IGNORED in the code.  It was indeed checking.  And I suspect the empty grayed 'minutes' field was probably returning 0 or something like that to the code.  So ignoring the checkbox and having a zero minutes refresh rate, it was probably defaulting to a minimum of 1 minute.  But it should NOT be refreshing at all with that checkbox off.
    8) I turned the checkbox ON and set the value to 15 minutes:
    12/12/08 22:18:34 INFO  pop3server: Connection for treo.*******************.com
    12/12/08 22:34:09 INFO  pop3server: Connection for treo.*******************.com
    12/12/08 22:49:46 INFO  pop3server: Connection for treo.*******************.com
    9) Note that as soon as I checked the checkbox and set the refresh to 15 minutes, that is indeed precisely what I have in my POP log.  Oh, yeah... by the way... the much more obvious "Automatic Send/Receive" setting on the account menu is still set to 1 day... (why is that page and option even there???)
    10) So in summary, you have one scheduler where the user can set a value that is completely ignored.  And you have a buried checkbox that defaults to off and the code apparently doesn't check it and assumes it's always on.
I don't need any additional help.  It's working now.  But I think someone in development needs to take a serious look at how this is working based on my scenario and analysis above.
    Thanks.

  • Mail in Leopard (10.5.4) stops checking my IMAP e-mail account

I run my own IMAP e-mail server and have Leopard Mail check it every 5 minutes or so. Upon first start-up of Mail it works fine. After a while it stops checking e-mail. I first noticed this when I would hear a new e-mail come in via my iPhone (which is checking the same server in the same way Mail is configured to) but it wouldn't show up in Mail. Pressing the Get Mail button didn't do anything either. The only way I can get it to check mail again is to close Mail (closing Mail when this happens takes a really long time) and to re-launch it. This doesn't happen on Thunderbird on my Windows system so I know it's not the server. This also didn't happen on previous versions of OS X. How can this bug in Mail be reported? Is there anything I can do to fix it?

    Hello Jon,
welcome to Apple Discussions. I don't know how to fix this issue. But if you want to report a bug to Apple you have to join the [Apple Developer Connection|http://developer.apple.com> before. To actually write a bug report afterwards go to [this page|https://bugreport.apple.com].

  • IMAP every 15 minutes not reliable - Am I the only one?

I had the problem since 1.1.2 (on an unhacked T-Mobile Germany iPhone) and it seems to get worse with 1.1.3.
Pulling mails using IMAP from my .mac account works for an hour or some hours then it stops to pull mails every 15 minutes. When I manually start the mail program it loads all mails. So my settings are correct. When I reboot my iPhone the problem is gone for a while but then comes back. Am I the only one because I read no other post with this specific problem.
Deleting and recreating the mailbox on the phone did not help (and I found out that deleting a mailbox from the phone does NOT delete all information from the phone, a cache of the IMAP messages is still kept). Even a full recovery (including restore from backup) on the phone did not help.

I solved the problem now this way:
    - Did a complete reset of the iPhone and
    - I did NOT restore from a previous backup.
Instead I entered all my settings manual again, like IMAP Servers, all phone settings etc.
For now the problem is gone. Works reliable for a week or so. Knocking on wood...

  • 2 Question: Check mail on launch/Save Attachments

    Hello all.
I have 2 Questions about Mail 2.0.5 in Tiger:
    1.Start Checking Mail upon Launch
I have set Mail to check for new mail every 5 minutes, but everytime when I first launch Mail, I have to manually click on 'Get Mail' for the 1st email check, is there a way to start checking email when launch?
    2.Save Attachments into a pre-designated folder
How do I save attachments into a folder? Do I set a new Rule with this?? Insides Rules, the closest I can find is "Any Attachment Name", but I don't know how to set this up?
In Entourage, there is 1 rule with Attachments easily set up to move them into another folder or something...
    Thanks and cheers

I have a similar issue. I have had Leopard installed for a few months with everything working fine. A few days ago mail stopped working. Mail appears on the desktop but crashes after beginning to bring accounts online. Does anyone know what could be wrong.

  • Version 2.1 (on Touch) won't fetch every 15 minutes!

    Hello,
Ever since I upgraded to 2.1, my iPod won't fetch mail every 15 minutes while it is off. It only fetch 2 times per day. It used to fetch new mail even when it was not in use, and the icon would display if I have new mail. Now it only fetches when I open the mail app. My settings are all correct. Has anyone else noticed this?

You're not alone. I am having the same issue. I had a 1st gen 16GB touch that would check for new messages and display the number on the icon immediately after turning the ipod on. Now with my 32gig 2.1 brand spanking new touch it takes a good 2+ minutes to check without going into the app and checking manually. It's annoying but it seems like quite a few are having the problem so maybe the next update will take care of it. Cross your fingers.

  • Quorum/Witness Disk Offline every 15 minutes error - Event ID 1069 - Event ID 1558

2 node active passive, 2008 failover cluster.  I keep getting the following error events:
The cluster service detected a problem with the witness resource. The witness resource will be failed over to another node within the cluster in an attempt to reestablish access to cluster configuration data. Event ID 1558
Cluster resource 'Cluster Disk 1' in clustered service or application 'Cluster Group' failed. Event ID 1069
However my quorum disk is online from what I can see.   One thing I did notice is, the Quorum disk no longer has any files in it. It is just a empty drive.
I also noticed these errors are being entered every 15 minutes exactly.
I monitored the Quorum disk and it is going offline momentarily every 15 minutes.
Experts Exchange Posts indicate this is known issue and waiting for microsoft to deliver SP2?  Really?

    Any thoughts

support.microsoft.com/kb/2750820 - This does not resolved your issue because it applies only to the Quorum model Node and File share majority.
The issue is because of the cluster configuration corruption and cluster I checking after every 15 minute and is seeing the cluster quorum disk in failed state (actually it is not failed) but is not able to update the current state of the quorum disk.
Check for below logs in the cluster logs:

  • Checking mail without mail open?

I have searched and havent found anything on it, but is there a way to have mail automatically check mail every so often WITHOUT the mail program being open all the time? thanks in advanced

You can launch mail and close the Inbox window. Mail will continue to check on the schedule you set for it. If you get new mail, the Icon in the Dock will have the number of new messages in a red circle.

    First
Why mail ask me my mail password every 5 minutes. for my main adress with my provider?
    Second
Why mail refuse my hotmail password.
I have no problems connecting me when i acces via a web browser?
    Can someone help me?
    Thanks

    Hello,
1st, Either the passwoed is not being stored in your keychain, or the wrong one is stored there...
Open Keychain Access in Utilities, use Keychain First Aid under the Keychain Menu item, then either check the Password under that item, change it, or delete it and start over.
2nd, Might be the same problem as the 1st, or some change at hotmail, same problem with hotmail here, but I don't use that account much at all.

  • Firmware 2.1  - E-Mail checking every 15 minutes fails

Since upgrading to Firmware 2.1 E-Mails are not automatically checked every 15 minutes on my iPhone. I have configured gMail IMAP and until Firmware 2.1 this worked like a charm. Now i mostly have to manually start the Mail.app on the iPhone to receive E-Mails.
Yes, i have reset all Mail Settings
Yes, i have reset the complete iPhone
So i guess it is Firmware 2.1 that makes the troubles for me.
    Any ideas?

I, too and having the same problem. Problem actually started when I upgraded to 2.0. My email which is sbcglobal, is set up for push mail, which can be done. Worked like a charm on 1.1.4. Since upgrading to 2.0 it stopped working and would only fetch. When I upgraded to 2.1, push resumed working, for two days, then I couldn't even get the email to fetch. I brought it to the Apple store, they asked if I restored, which I had but from old back up. The genius bar told me it was probably corrupted software and every time I restored from old backup, I put that corrupted software right back on my phone. Fine, I set the phone up as a brand new phone when I got home, after they restored it at the Apple store. Push was working fine, until today. So, the phone went three days before ceasing to function as it should. I've just switched to fetch so let's see if that works.
Ugh, I just wish the phone would function in the capacity of which it has be advertised.
I would suggest taking it to the Apple store. Even if they can't get it to work properly, at least there will be record of the problem. The woman who helped me at the genius bar, made detailed records in the computer, in case the restore didn't fix the problem. I can only guess so that the next time, since I'm under warranty, they will just replace the phone.
