IMAP connection works on iMac, not on MacBook

Hello,
I've been setting up Mail to access an IMAP account with a new web host. I set it up on my iMac without issue. It uses port 993 for an SSL connection, reads and sends mail with no problems. Trying to set it up on my MacBook Pro, using the same settings, and can't get it to work. Through Airport I was getting messages that it couldn't connect to the server, so I hooked it up to wired Ethernet, same as the iMac. It made the intiial connection, but now says it can't read data from the server, and the Activity window shows it endlessly trying to connect and sync. Both Macs running 10.6.7, and using Mail.app. Same firewall settings (it's on, with no services enabled in the Sharing preference), as I'm thinking maybe it's some kind of port issue. Any thoughts? Thanks.
Dan

Try copying the "com.apple.mail.plist" file from the working iMac's preferernces folder to the MacBook's.  The file is located in User > Library > Preferences.

  • Connect an old iMac to a MacBook via ethernet to gain internet access?

    I have a 2008 white macbook running 10.6.8
    I have a 2004 lamshade G4 800mhz imac running 10.4.11
    I do not have a wireless card for the imac and it is no where near my router.
    Is there any way to connect the imac to the macbook with an ethernet cable and use the macbooks internet on the imac? If so, can you give me the step by step directions?

    Connect an ethernet cable from the MacBook to the iMac.
    From the Macbook, do System Preferences > Sharing and turn ON "Internet Sharing.
    Set the options so they look like this:
    except click the checkbox so internet sharing is "on." (I didn't turn it on when I made the screnshot.)
    That should route internet servtce from the wireless access of the MB to the iMac.
    You should be able to use a standard cat5 patch cable but. if that doesn't work, try either connecting via an ethernet hub or use a crossover cat5 cable. I think the iMac is new enough to not require a crossover but I add this as an option.

  • Different wi-fi speed connection between my iMac and my Macbook Pro (both placed side by side)

    I have purchased my iMac and my macbook pro at the same time and now I am facing something which I consider weird. The wi-fi connection speed in my iMac is fine but the wi-fi speed connection on my macbook pro is awful. It works as fine as the iMac if I connect it to a ethernet cable. I have put my macbook pro side by side with my iMac to try it and for my surprise, my macbook pro wi-fi speed connection was still lousy whilst the wi-fi speed connection from my iMac was nice... Does anyone face the same issue?

    Non Apple router? Try restarting the router.
    If you are using an Apple AirPort base station, try a different channel on the MacBook Pro.
    Open AirPort Utility located in Applications > Utilities
    Click on the base station icon then click Edit the select the Wireless tab then click Wireless Options.
    Cick the first Channel pop up menu, select Automatic
    Click the second Channel pop up menu, select Automatic
    Cick Save.
    Give AirPort a minute to reset.
    If automatic does not help, try a numbered channel from the pop up menu.

  • Crashes on iMac not on Macbook

    Since installing SL 10.6.1 some software such as Elements 6.0 and Photomatix Pro work without problem on my Macbook but continue to crash on my iMac. Why a problem with the iMac but not my Macbook?

    That's good news!
    If the alternate admin account keeps working...
    You could transfer everything to the new account, but a better solution would be to troubleshoot the problem in your regular account.
    While I don't use either of these apps, my guess would be some corrupt preferences. We know there is nothing wrong with the app. So, while logged into your problem account go to Users/yourname/Library/Preferences and move any .plist files associated with those name to your desktop and re-launch the apps.
    Another check would be to start in Safe Mode (It will take more time to startup in Safe Mode because it runs a directory check.)
    If your apps function correctly that way, go to System Preferences >> Accounts >> Login Items, and remove them. Boot normally and test. If not go to ~(yourHome)/Library/Contextual Menu Items and move whatever is there to the desktop. Then do the same with /Library/Contextual Menu Items. Lastly, try moving ~(yourHome)/Library/Fonts to your desktop and restarting.
    Log out/in or restart, if that sorts it start putting items back one at a time until you find the culprit.

  • My printer (HP8500) is wi-fi connected to my imac and my macbook. works fine from macbook, but has stopped working on the imac--shows offline. How can I fix this? Thanks

    I have an iMac and MacBook Pro, both running Snow Leopard at current maintenance levels. I have an HP8500 printer connected via wi-fi. All have been working well until just recently. Now, the iMac cannot communicate with the printer. The printer icon shows offline. The printer is still online to the MacBook. I suspect a related problem is that when I try to access files on the MacBook from the iMac, I get a message that they are unavailable, but re-clicking once or twice to re-try works and the files are accessible. The only problem is that I cannot modify them from the iMac, even though the sharing options are set for update capability.
    Resetting the printer and re-booting the iMac don't help.

    Yosemite is a big problem.
    I recommend you factory reset the TC and start over.
    Factory reset universal
    Power off the TC.. ie pull the power cord or power off at the wall.. wait 10sec.. hold in the reset button.. be gentle.. power on again still holding in reset.. and keep holding it in for another 10sec. You may need some help as it is hard to both hold in reset and apply power. It will show success by rapidly blinking the front led. Release the reset.. and wait a couple of min for the TC to reset and come back with factory settings. If the front LED doesn’t blink rapidly you missed it and simply try again. The reset is fairly fragile in these.. press it so you feel it just click and no more.. I have seen people bend the lever or even break it. I use a toothpick as tool.
    N.B. None of your files on the hard disk of the TC are deleted.. this simply clears out the router settings of the TC.
    Redo the setup from Yosemite.. it needs to be directly involved in the setup to remember anything.
    Please use short names.. no spaces and pure alphanumeric. eg TCgen5 base station name. TCwifi as wireless name.
    Set password WPA2 Personal security which is pure alphanumeric mixed case and numbers.
    Please empty out all the old wireless names from your devices.. reboot them and rediscover the network.
    If it still fails tell us.

  • Wi-Fi on AppleTV, iPhones, iPad, working fine. iMac not connecting to any Network. HELP!?

    Hello,
    I'm working on OSX Version 10.9.4. Recently, I started using Time Warner Cable for internet. All other devices work fine with the Wi-Fi.  iMac was originally connected to our wi-fi network and ran fine. Periodically, the wi-fi would loose a connection on the Mac whenever the computer would go to sleep, or the screen saver would come on. I'd simply restart the computer and the connection would come back. Now, nothing. Even clicking on the wi-fi network doesn't do a thing. All of the other devices are working fine, so I'm sure it's not the wi-fi itself. Just not sure what to trouble shoot on the computer.
    I've renewed the DHCP Lease, that doesn't work. I've deleted the wi-fi and tried to create a new location. Not sure if I did that correctly, but that didn't work either.
    I've looked around these boards, but I thought I'd write my own question to see if maybe someone has had this particular issue. Can you help me out?
    Thanks.

  • Guitar works on iMac, not MacBook

    Very strange problem with GarageBand: Before the GarageBand '11 update, my electric guitar was working perfectly even when using the GB guitar effects. Since updating to '11 (and yes, I've installed the '11 software update) when monitoring the guitar through my speakers (or MacBook built-in speakers) it's ok for the first 5-10 seconds, but then there is a constant distortion noise and crackling and popping, as well as a severe delay (1-2 seconds) between the time I hit a note to the time I hear it. The latency is not there in the first 5-10 seconds, it only occurs when the distortion sound and crackling and pop sounds start. I wondered if my MacBook needed more than the 2GB of memory I have in it, so I installed a total of 4GB. Didn't help. Same problem. The problem is not my guitar or the interface cable (First Act) as I tried the identical setup on my iMac with 2GB memory, and it works flawlessly, even when using guitar effects. Is anyone else having this problem?

    The problem with Windows Media files on Intel Macs at the moment is that there is no player available as a Universal binary. You can however install the Flip4Mac plugins although you will need to run both Quicktime and Safari under Rosetta… which you may not want to do. Anyway, here's what you do…
    0) Download the Flip4mac plugins from…

    1) Change the installer to run using Rosetta
    2) Change Quicktime Player to run using Rosetta

    4) Install Flip4Mac plugins
    5) Try it out

  • Best connection between new iMac and firewire MacBook Pro

    Hi I'm running a MBP with Firewire, USB (2?) and Ethernet ports. I am soon to take delivery of my shiny new iMac with Thunderbolt, USB 3 and Ethernet ports. What please would be the fastest connection I can establish between the two machines? Thanks, M

    Ethernet is your fastest choice - FW800, to be precise.
    To transfer from the MBP to the iMac use Target Disk Mode. Boot the MBP into TDM, boot the iMac normally and preferably for the first time. This will put you into the Setup Assistant and let you migrate data from the MBP - Home folder, third-party applications with support files, and system preferences.
    If you prefer not to do a migration then you can also simply transfer selected items using drag and drop.
    A Basic Guide for Migrating to Intel-Macs
    The Knowledgebase article Intel-based Mac: Some migrated applications may need to be updated refers to methods of dealing with migrating from PowerPC chips to Intel with the Migration Assistant safely. The authors of this tip have not had a chance to verify this works in all instances, or that it avoids the 10.6.1 and earlier Guest Account bug that caused account information to get deleted upon use of the Migration/Setup Assistant. However, a well backed up source that includes at least two backups of all the data that are not connected to your machine will help you avoid potential issues, should they arise. In event it does not work, follow the steps below.
    If you are migrating a PowerPC system (G3, G4, or G5) to an Intel-Mac be careful what you migrate.  Keep in mind that some items that may get transferred will not work on Intel machines and may end up causing your computer's operating system to malfunction.
    Rosetta supports "software that runs on the PowerPC G3, G4, or G5 processor that are built for Mac OS X". This excludes the items that are not universal binaries or simply will not work in Rosetta:
      1. Classic Environment, and subsequently any Mac OS 9 or earlier applications
      2. Screensavers written for the PowerPC System Preference add-ons
      3. All Unsanity Haxies Browser and other plug-ins
      4. Contextual Menu Items
      5. Applications which specifically require the PowerPC G5 Kernel extensions
      6. Java applications with JNI (PowerPC) libraries
    See also What Can Be Translated by Rosetta.
    In addition to the above you could also have problems with migrated cache files and/or cache files containing code that is incompatible.
    If you migrate a user folder that contains any of these items, you may find that your Intel-Mac is malfunctioning. It would be wise to take care when migrating your systems from a PowerPC platform to an Intel-Mac platform to assure that you do not migrate these incompatible items.
    If you have problems with applications not working, then completely uninstall said application and reinstall it from scratch. Take great care with Java applications and Java-based Peer-to-Peer applications. Many Java apps will not work on Intel-Macs as they are currently compiled. As of this time Limewire, Cabos, and Acquisition are available as universal binaries. Do not install browser plug-ins such as Flash or Shockwave from downloaded installers unless they are universal binaries. The version of OS X installed on your Intel-Mac comes with special compatible versions of Flash and Shockwave plug-ins for use with your browser.
    The same problem will exist for any hardware drivers such as mouse software unless the drivers have been compiled as universal binaries. For third-party mice the current choices are USB Overdrive or SteerMouse. Contact the developer or manufacturer of your third-party mouse software to find out when a universal binary version will be available.
    Also be careful with some backup utilities and third-party disk repair utilities. Disk Warrior, TechTool Pro , SuperDuper , and Drive Genius  work properly on Intel-Macs with Leopard.  The same caution may apply to the many "maintenance" utilities that have not yet been converted to universal binaries.  Leopard Cache Cleaner, Onyx, TinkerTool System, and Cocktail are now compatible with Leopard.
    Before migrating or installing software on your Intel-Mac check MacFixit's Rosetta Compatibility Index.

      6. Transferring data with Setup Assistant - Migration Assistant FAQ
      7. OS X Lion: How to use Migration Assistant to transfer files from another Mac
    Because Migration Assistant isn't the ideal way to migrate from PowerPC to Intel Macs, using Target Disk Mode, copying the critical contents to CD and DVD, an external hard drive, or networking will work better when moving from PowerPC to Intel Macs.  The initial section below discusses Target Disk Mode.  It is then followed by a section which discusses networking with Macs that lack Firewire.
    If both computers support the use of Firewire then you can use the following instructions:
      1. Repair the hard drive and permissions using Disk Utility.
      2. Backup your data.  This is vitally important in case you make a mistake
          or there's some other problem.
      3. Connect a Firewire cable between your old Mac and your new Intel Mac.
      4. Startup your old Mac in Transferring files between two computers using FireWire.
      5. Startup your new Mac for the first time, go through the setup and
           registration screens, but do NOT migrate data over. Get to your
           desktop on the new Mac without migrating any new data over.
    If you are not able to use a Firewire connection (for example you have a Late 2008 MacBook that only supports USB:)
    1. Set up a local home network: Creating a small Ethernet Network.
    2. If you have a MacBook Air or Late 2008 MacBook see the following:

    Copy the following items from your old Mac to the new Mac:
    In your /Home/ folder: Documents, Movies, Music, Pictures, and Sites folders.
    In your /Home/Library/ folder:
    /Home/Library/Application Support/AddressBook (copy the whole folder) /Home/Library/Application Support/iCal (copy the whole folder)
    Also in /Home/Library/Application Support (copy whatever else you need including folders for any third-party applications)
    /Home/Library/Keychains (copy the whole folder) /Home/Library/Mail (copy the whole folder) /Home/Library/Preferences/ (copy the whole folder) /Home /Library/Calendars (copy the whole folder) /Home /Library/iTunes (copy the whole folder) /Home /Library/Safari (copy the whole folder)
    If you want cookies:
    /Home/Library/Cookies/Cookies.plist /Home/Library/Application Support/WebFoundation/HTTPCookies.plist
    For Entourage users:
    Entourage is in /Home/Documents/Microsoft User Data Also in /Home/Library/Preferences/Microsoft.
    Credit goes to Macjack for this information.
    If you need to transfer data for other applications please ask the vendor or ask in the  Discussions where specific applications store their data.
    5. Once you have transferred what you need restart the new Mac and test to make sure the contents are there for each of the applications.

  • Smoothcam on iMac, not on MacBook

    I installed FCP 6.0.5 on both my iMac 24 inch, 2,8kHz 4Gb and my MAcBookPro 17 inch 2,16kHz 2Gb.
    On the iMac smootcam is working and in the list of effects, on the MacBook not. What's the reason for this?

    Are you missing other FxPlug effects? In the "Image Control" effects folder do you see Color Reduce, Gamma, Gradient Colorize, HSV Adjust, etc.? If not, I'd suggest a full uninstall and reinstall. Use FCS Remover

  • IMac not showing MacBook in Shared Devices

    My iMac dosen't have Airdrop(Older machine), and on Shared Devises my MacBook Pro dosen't show up on the iMac. What gives? The iMac shows in Shared Devices on the MacBook.

    I suspect this is some kind of bug.
    When I connect to my other MBP, sometimes the icon shows up in the Finder sidebar, sometimes not. Ditto when I connect to a PC.
    I often have to resort to using the Go menu and entering the IP of the other machine in order to connect, and even then, the other computer does not always show up in the finder.
    Usually, if I reboot one of the remote machines, then the icon shows up.
    I somehow recall this, or a similar issue being reported by others in the network forum.

  • AMF connection working on browser, not in stand alone player

    Greetings,
    I'm trying to communicate my SWF file with PHP using Zend_Amf. I compile the flash side using Flex SDK 4.
    Whenever I try to run the swf using the stand alone player (the projector), I always get a NetConnection.Call.BadVersion event. However, when running exactly the same file thorught the player of the browser (even not thoguht a server, just using the file:// kind of address), everything works OK, so I know my code is not completely wrong.
    I thought this could be related with the security sandbox. However, I added the folder where my swf file is to the global trusted folder; and actually made sure that Security.sandboxType returns "localTrusted". How ever, that didn't fix anything.
    So I'm out of ideas. Any suggestion on where to look next?

    Here's my code, in case its needed (it's a pretty straightforward hello world example):
    PHP SIDE:
    $a = new Amf_Model_Test();
    $server = new Zend_Amf_Server();
    $server->setClass('Amf_Model_Test');
    echo $server->handle();
    class Amf_Model_Test
    * return string
    public function greet()
        return "hello";
    AS SIDE:
    public class main extends Sprite
    private var _resp: Responder;
    private var _nc: NetConnection;
    private var tf: TextField;
    private var _gateway: String;
    public function main()
    tf = new TextField();
    tf.width = 500;
    tf.border = true;
    tf.borderColor = 0x0000FF;
    addChild(tf);
          _gateway = 'http://cms.loc/amf';
    _resp = new Responder(onResult, onFault);
    _nc = new NetConnection();
    _nc.connect(_gateway);
    _nc.client = this;
    _nc.addEventListener(NetStatusEvent.NET_STATUS, onNetStatus);
    _nc.call("Amf_Model_Test.greet", _resp);
    private function onNetStatus(event: NetStatusEvent): void
    trace(event.info['code']);
    tf.text = "Status = "+event.info['code'];
    private function onFault(result: Object): void
    tf.text = "Fault = " + String(result);
    private function onResult(result: Object): void
          tf.text = "Result = " + String(result);
    In my browser, I get "Result = hello", as expected. In the stand alone player (which is exactly the same version) I get "Status = NetConnection.Call.BadVersion".

    I have a Brother MFC-7420 printer.  Up ntil a few days ago, I coiuld print from my Macbook Pro, as the Systems Pref. in the iMac allowed for everyone to print. Now I get the message "Printer Off Line," when the printer icon pops out of the dock in my attempt to print from the MacBook Pro. • I can't get a thunderbolt connection to work between my iMac and new macbook air

    I would like to establish a connection between my iMac and new macbook air using a thunderbolt connector. Nothing seems to happen when I plug the cable in to each device. When I open Settings/Network it shows up the Thunderbolt bridge as 'Not Connected' on the MacBook and as 'Some Connected' on the iMac. I have no problems with connecting another device (iPad) to the iMac. Can anyone help please?

    Nothing happens when I try to boot up using the command+R keys.
    Did you hold down those keys before booting and continue till you get to a selections window?  You should get this:
    If you can't boot into the Recovery volume make an appointment with the nearest Apple Genius bar for a diagnosis.  You're still under warranty.

  • My macbook tries to connect to my imac at login.

    At start up of my Macbook Pro, I get a window that reads ,  "There was a problem connecting to the server ( my name ) imac."      Further, the server may not be not exist or it is unavailable at this time. "       I do not wish to connect to my imac from my macbook - but have not been able to discover what I enabled or clicked to for the macbook to make the attempt.   Please advise if possible.

    Please take each of the following steps that you haven't already tried. Back up all data before making any changes.
    Step 1
    If you get the warning as soon as you log in, it's probably caused by one of your login items or a system modification that loads at startup or login. Ask if you need help identifying it. A common offender is "AdobeResourceSynchronizer," which is a component of some Adobe products.
    Step 2
    If there's an icon representing the server in the sidebar of a Finder window, hold down the command key and drag it out.
    Step 3
    In the Finder, press the key combination command-K or select
    Go ▹ Go to Server...
    from the menu bar. In the upper right corner of the window that opens is a Recent Servers popup menu represented by a clock icon. From that menu, select
    Clear Recent Servers…
    and confirm. Test.
    Step 4
    Open the Print & Scan pane in System Preferences and delete any network devices you no longer use.
    Step 5
    Triple-click the line below to select it, then copy the text to the Clipboard (command-C):
    ~/Library/PDF Services
    In the Finder, select
    Go ▹ Go to Folder...
    from the menu bar, paste into the box that opens (command-V). You won't see what you pasted because a line break is included. Press return. A folder may open. If it does, move the contents to the Desktop, or to a new folder on the Desktop. Log out and log back in. Test. If there's no change, put the items you moved back where they were and continue.
    Step 6
    Open the folder
    ~/Library/Preferences
    as in Step 5 and move the file named "loginwindow.plist" items in that folder to the Trash, if it exists (it may not.)
    Log out and back in again, and test.
    Step 7
    Other possible causes are references in the iPhoto, iTunes, or iMovie library pointing to the server, and bookmarks in the Preview application.
    Try rebuilding the iPhoto library.
    Step 8
    Triple-click the line below on this page to select it:
    /System/Library/CoreServices/Directory Utility.app
    Rght-click or control-click the highlighted text and select
    Services ▹ Open
    from the contextual menu.* The application Directory Utility will open.
    In the Directory Utility window, select the Directory Editor tool in the toolbar. Select Mounts from the Viewing menu in the toolbar, and /Local/Default from the node menu, if not already selected. On the right is a list of names and values. By default, the list is empty. If it's not empty, post a screenshot of the window and stop here.
    *If you don't see the contextual menu item, copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C). Open a TextEdit window and paste into it (command-V). Select the line you just pasted and continue as above.
    Step 9
    Open the following file as you did in the last step:
    /etc/auto_master
    It will open in a TextEdit window. The contents should be exactly this:
    # Automounter master map
    +auto_master          # Use directory service
    /net               -hosts          -nobrowse,hidefromfinder,nosuid
    /home               auto_home     -nobrowse,hidefromfinder
    /Network/Servers     -fstab
    /-               -static
    If there are any other lines in the window, post them. Otherwise, close the window.

  • Cisco Anytime Connect VPN working from iMac but not from MacBook Air with same settings and wifi network

    Hi guys,
    I'm having trouble connecting my new MacBook Air to Cisco Anytime Connect VPN.
    The same configuration works with my iMac, in the same network and same Mac OS Mountain Lion on both computers.
    After successfully connecting to VPN after a few seconds it gets disconnected and, what is worse, WIFI is not working any more in my macBook Air, I need to deactivate it and start again.
    With iMac with the same settings it doesn't happen.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks!

    Did you power cycle the network? That's always the first thing you want to do if a device is "missing" or not connecting to your network correctly.
    If you have not already tried this a few times, power down the entire network...all devices, order is not important.
    Wait a few minutes and place the MBAir close to the TC
    Start the modem first and let it run a few moments by itself. Then start the TC if it is the device connected to the modem and let it run a few moments. Then start each device one at a time the same way.
