IMAP error gmail account

Because I am getting this error I deleted the gmail account with intentions of putting it back on however when I put in my ID and email address it still says that my details are incorrect for IMAP .
So now I can't even re register my gmail account.
Error "User name or password incorrect for IMAP"
Help please!

Gmail account in Mail

i have recently created a gmail account which i would like to run through apple mail. i followed all the instructions on the gmail website about how to do this and have no problem with incoming mail however the outgoing mail is not working.
can anyone help?

My Gmail account is set up to allow IMAP I did this via Setting>Forwarding and POP/IMAP>Enable IMAP
In Apple Mail my setting in the Preferences show
Account Type: IMAP
Description: Gmail Account
Email Address: "email address"@gmail.com
Full Name: "my full name"
Incoming Mail Server: imap.gmail.com
Username: "my email address"@gmail.com
Password: *****
Outgoing Mail Server (STMP): stmp.gmail.com:"my email address"@gmail.com
Also under the Advanced tab
Enable this account and
Include when checking for new mail - are both checked.
Port: 993 SSL - checked
Authentication: Password
Finally my Mail is version 2.1.2.
Does it make any difference if I use POP or IMAP? I have tried with both and had the same results.

Port 993 error message, now can't set up MacMail for GMail account.

I've been using MacMail for years without a problem. Recently a little exclamation point came up with an error message indicating that the server couldn't connect with the 993 port for my Gmail account. After trying to update my software, restart the program, etc etc I deleted the account, thinking I'd just recreate a MacMail connection to my Gmail account. Not I'm receiving an error message that the server imap.gmail.com is not responding, and I can not set up a MacMail account linked to my Gmail.
I've seen lots of people with this problem, but no sufficient answers to correct it. I am not using a portable device, I am using my iMac to try to make this happen.
Please help! Any incite is much appreciated.

For port 993, is SSL checked & authentication = Password?
Could this be it?
Gmail send but not receive...
Here are two steps that have come in handy in related situations
1) login to gmail on your computer or device via a web browser
2) once logged in successfully, go to this URL to unlock:

I am setting up a Gmail account on Outlook. I can receive mail but not send it.
I have confirmed the right settings with Gmail and made sure to enable IMAP.
-- Outgoing Server -- smtp.gmail.com : 465 (or 587, both don't work)
-- Override default port (enabled)
-- Use SSL to connect (enabled)
Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Mail Throws IMAP Error When Accessing POP Server @ Gmail

This is my first day with my new iMac and I must say that the most frustrating experience so far has been using Mail v 4.3
I have several accounts, and never had a problem until now. In the setup, it assumes incorrectly that my Gmail account is IMAP, which is isn't... and never will be considering I don't need that redundant files on a server nonsense for my personal mail.... so after it discovers there is no IMAP connection on my Gmail and it fusses about it, I switch the setting to POP.
Then when I try to download some e-mails later, it throws the following error: "Mail can't verify the identity of pop.gmail.com" ...because when you check the certificate error, you see it is querying imap.gmail.com instead of pop.gmail.com and hence getting a mismatch on the security certificate.
So I can't download Gmail emails at all for the moment.
I took a screen shot of the error message because I don't want some tech dude telling me I am imagining things or set it wrong.
Other than giving up and agreeing with Mail that I should be using IMAP, I'm stuck.

I have already tried this. But I did it now, strictly following your suggestion. Here's what happens:
After the first screen of account setup, Mail offers for Incoming mail server imap.gmail.com, which I duly change to pop.gmail.com.
In the next screen I manually add the "@gmail.com" part of the address to the User Name field. Then click 'Create'.
A looooooong wait later I can click on Create twice again and it's done, supposedly.
But then, it fails to get anything from Google. The particular account shows up in Mail main window as a spinning gear forever, before giving up with no email downloaded. The account ends up showing in grey in the list of accounts, with the tilde ~ next to it.
This has happened many times, like I said.
Really frustrating.

Open Mail preferences and select Accounts then MailBox Behavior. You probably need to unclick the safe draft to server.

Go to System prefs
Select Mail Contacts and Calendars
Then select Other
Then select "Add a Mail Account and click create
Then go to google for the settings you need:

Sync conflicts between Exchange and Gmail/IMAP/Mobile Me accounts

I have managed to configure my exchange account in Mail, and it seemed to be working fine until yesterday. Today however, I am experiencing some odd behaviour in my mail accounts:
- My two Gmail accounts (IMAP, syncing through Mobile me) are moving incoming email straight to ALL MAIL and skipping inbox.
- I am not receiving new emails from my exchange server to my exchange address, but to my Gmail address (not to the inbox but to All mail).
Should I turn off syncing through Mobile Me since I am already using IMAP?
I desactivated the exchange account and reset the sync data, now at least the Gmail accounts seem to be working.
Anyone having these kinds of problems with the exchange

Having the same problem and recently it is duplicating contacts as high at 10+ times in some cases, did you get a fix for this? if so find me on beehive and share it with me please?

I am getting an error message for a GMail account that I may have exceeded the maximum number of connections but........

I changed the max. # of server connections to cache to one as recommended and am still unable to use this account. I also tried to flush my DNS cache but for some reason this also is not functioning. I am using a Macbook Pro. My Zoho account is still functioning normally with T'Bird so it makes me suspect it is a problem with Gmail and perhaps not T'Bird. Thoughts? Thank you.

Tools menu > account settings > server settings >advanced and you can edit the maximum connections Thunderbird will establish with an IMAP server.
Unfortunately the afore mentioned Apple products have no such setting, or at least my last foray into the apple support forums left me believing so. It makes their mail functions fast, but makes playing in the same sand pit as others much more difficult.

You can not merge accounts.
Apps are tied to the Apple ID used to download them, you can not transfer them.

Set up gmail account in Apple mail and it only defaults to Pop. How can I get it to allow me IMAP?

I have multiple gmail accounts. Just set up a new one and configured it exactly as I have the others in gmail (enabling IMAP). But when I set it up in Apple Mail, it automatically sets it up as a Pop account. I cannot find a way to set it up manually...there is no check box that I can find to do this in the set up window. I have repeated the steps several times and it always defaults to Pop. So...how can I set it up as an IMAP account?
