IMAP Gmail + Apple Mail = strange behavior?

I'm using Apple Mail 3.0 and Gmail IMAP. I have several mailboxes (Gmail calls them "labels", I guess) set up in Gmail's webmail application, and they are mirrored on Apple Mail. I have also set up Gmail to download mail from three different POP account.
Here's the problem: for some reason, when I click on a message that has been downloaded from one of the POP accounts in the inbox in Apple Mail, it still appears as "unread" in Gmail webmail and in the "All Mail" Gmail folder in Apple Mail.
Somehow Gmail doesn't know that I'm clicking on the message, so it stays marked "unread". Because it stays marked unread, it is not automatically deleted after 30 days as it should be (I've been told that the 30-day period is not related to the date the message was sent, but to the time it was first accessed.) This means that I have several months of old messages stored on the Gmail server (and in my Gmail folders in Mail) that I don't want there.
Or it means that I have to manually go into the Gmail "All Mail" folder, either on Gmail webmail or in the "All Mail" Gmail folder in Mail on my computer, and manually click on the messages to mark them as read. This gets VERY tedious throughout the day.
Anyone else encountered this issue and figured out how to resolve it?

Sorry, I just noticed something. The problem is not only with the mail that comes in from the Fetch accounts. It also happens with mail sent to Gmail.
In the left-hand column of Mail 3.0, there's a folder called "Gmail" with a triangle next to it. Let's say a new mail comes into my inbox to my Gmail address. If I click on it in the inbox, it gets marked as unread in the inbox. However, I still see a "1" next to the Gmail folder indicating there's an unread message. If I click on the triangle to expand the folder, and then click on "All Mail", the folder seems to "update" itself and the unread email is marked as read (without me clicking on the actual message).
Otherwise, it seems to stay marked unread. Why is this?

  • Whats up with IMAP + Gmail + Apple mail

    Dear folks,
I've been searching the entire (no really) internet for some answers but nothing seems to work and it's starting to annoy me now! The problem is that i've been using IMAP and Gmail perfectly for years on my mac. Recently i bought a new macbook pro and all of a sudden i cant receive any more emails! It just says it cant reach the IMAP server 'cause my password/username isn't right. I've tried just about anything. I know about the terminal trick where you delete some hidden folders and the capthca tricks. I've tried them all, nothing seems to work!
I pay Apple a lot of money so it really bothers me that something like receiving email is such a big deal.. Can anyone please help me with this problem? It shouldnt be so hard right?
    Thanks guys!

As you're trying to connect via IMAP is it safe to assume that you don't have any local emails stored? If you don't you could try wiping the Mail settings and start from scratch - see if that makes any difference. I only suggest that as accessing gmail via IMAP is working for me.
If that doesn't work then as a long shot, what does imap.gmail.com resolve to for you? For me it's currently 209.85.229.109 (I'm assuming they have a few machines) and what happens if use that IP address instead of the URL?

  • IMAP Gmail & Apple Mail: Organizing Emails

I’ve just switched from POP to IMAP on Mail.app in an effort to synch my iPhone and my Mail.app. I followed the step-by-step instructions on Gmail’s support page. I’ve got a few questions . . .
    1) What’s the best way to organize the thousands of emails archived in the new All Mail Folder? I’d like to create basic folders (i.e. Work, Family, School) to sort my emails.
    2) Can I use the Apple’s “Sent” Folder (the one with the paper plane icon) to view all of my sent emaisl? Or will my history of sent emails forever be stored in the Gmail “Sent” subfolder?
    Thanks.

  • Gmail & Apple Mail not playing nice via IMAP

Would like to get feedback from other users who are Gmail subscribers and use Apple Mail as their main application.
I have had good success with ML Apple Mail...Snow Leopard I preferred Sparrow.  Until recently I had no issues and everything was playing nicely.  However, in the last 2 or so weeks I have noticed odd behaviors between the two platforms.  What I noticed first was that mail that was read on my phone was still showing unread in Apple Mail.  A re-sync didn't solve it but a quit and restart of Mail did.  Hmmm.  Now I also notice that sometimes in deleting mail my whol folder for my Gmail account would show nothing and a restart of the program would fix that.
Yes, I did do quite a bit of searching on the internet.  I had deleted the account and restablished it...no fix...deleted library folder containing the mail data so it would rebuild...no fix.  So I thought maybe it was an issue with IMAP and Google.  I'm an apps user so I actually got a response from Google.  They have no fix other than telling me to use Thunderbird as "Due to the way in which Apple Mail is coded, we don't officialy support Apple Mail 5 or 6 as IMAP clients."  Huh?  Geez, I didn't have any issues before.
Oh, and yes, I have read How To's on setting up Apple Mail with Gmail.  Before using Sparrow on SL, I had used Apple Mail for quite some time.  So not new to using it with Gmail.
So I am wondering what others are experiencing and any fixes they might have if similar.  I don't like using the web interface and have gotten use to the flow of ML Apple Mail and like it.  I am trying Postbox and will also try Thunderbird (though the lack of program advancement is a bit of a negative).
    Thanks for any input.
    Mike

I noticed some views but no suggestions.  Is anyone else experiencing the issue of read Emails on phone still showing unread in Apple Mail?

  • Gmail account IMAPed with Apple Mail. Apple Mail Inbox now empty! Where would the messages go?!?

I just synced up (IMAP) my Gmail account with Apple Mail. My apple mail inbox is now empty! Where would the messages go?!?

There is a better forum for issues with iCloud.
Apple has a couple tech note articles to help with email, and with gmail as well.
    Try there.

  • Anyone else using Gmail (IMAP) with Apple Mail having this problem?

I've been noticing the last couple months that whenever a new incoming message arrives from an ongoing thread/conversation in my Apple Mail client, it makes all prior emails in the same thread show up again as "unread", instead of just showing the latest message as unread. This means I tediously have to go and mark all prior messages in the thread as "read" again each time. When I log into gmail where the mail is hosted (as an IMAP account), the thread in question is hi-lighted to indicate a new unread message (including the email count for the number of messages in that thread), yet it seems only the most recent email is shown as unread. Somehow it seems Apple Mail is interpreting this message count in the Gmail thread as all being unread messages again each time.
Any settings I need to change or is this a bug that Gmail or Apple has?

    racb,
First check your on-line Gmail to see if the mail is sent / received. -
Sometimes Gmail will not send to itself or goes into the spam folder.
It also could be a corrupt preference file.
First save the mail in your inbox – in a new mailbox on your Mac.
    Close mail.
Go to Home folder (the house) - Library folder- Preferences folder –
    Look for - com.apple.mail.plist
Drag it into a new folder on your desktop – just incase you might need it latter.
You will need to go back into mail and recreate you Preferences/accounts again.

  • Gmail, Apple Mail, and excluding mailbox spotlight indexing

    Hello,
I use Apple Mail with my gmail IMAP account. Therefore I have a big mailbox "All Mail" where I have duplicates for all emails in "Sent" and my other tags (mailboxes in Apple Mail).
Whenever i search for something, I always get duplicate results, one from Inbox, the same email in All Mail, for example. I've added the "All mail" mailbox to the list of Spotlight exclusions, but Apple Mail seems to ignore this, because I still get results from that mailbox.
Also tried resetting hte spotlight index but this doesn't fix it.
Any ideas on how to force a mailbox not to be indexed by spotlight?
    Thanks.

Thanks, Andy. I should have posted a closure statement on this thread as I finally figured everything out. The most frustrating thing is Google's own advice at http://mail.google.com/support/bin/answer.py?answer=78892# couldn't further from correct. After many hours of experimenting with settings, I finally came up with the correct ones. In fact, I'm in the process of writing an article about it since there is simply no definitive guidance on the web that I've been able to find in the time I've searched.
Your comments are on target...everything on the *Behaviors Tab* needs to be checked (excepts Notes) and the *Delete when* settings must be set to Never. But there are a few other things that must be done, including some changes on Gmail Settings before Mail and Gmail will be perfectly synchronous. I'll post the entire solution on this forum when I finish the graphics.

  • Gmail apple mail password

I am using Apple mail to send/receive mail from Gmail Account, it was working properly. Yesterday I changed my gmail pasword from website for securiy, and then my Apple mail send a warning. So naturally, I changed my password too in Apple Mail Gmail Account, but it seems it doesn't work. It continued to say I can't connect to imap.gmail.com
    I've tried:
    1. Check Apple mail for gmail account setting, no problem.
    2. Check online gmail account IMAP is enabled.
    3. Delete the gmail account in Apple mail, recreate again, doesn't work!
    4. Try my password on the website and i m sure i typed the same password.
It also failed on my iphone4S too.
    HELP!

For the Mac, try deleting the password entry in Keychain Access. However, if you are also having problems with the iPhone, maybe both systems are having trouble with the password itself.
Does the Connection Doctor (Windows menu) in Mail give any hints. You can also show details and run the connection doctor again and see what messages are passed back and forth. The gmail server may post something back that gives a hint above what is in the blinky light screen.

  • Gmail & Apple Mail glitch--can't download msgs to two computers?

I have two Mac laptops with two Apple Mail accounts (one is new MacBook Air). When I get a new message in Gmail, it only downloads to whichever computer I open next and does not download to the other. Is there any setting in either Mail or Gmail POP that I can set so that all incoming messages are downloaded to both computers?
    Very much appreciate your help

Yes - in Mail's Account Preferences, under Advanced, untick "Remove copy from server".
Having said that, I strongly urge you to use IMAP for GMail access. Not only will this method not delete mail from the server, you're kept in sync (you only need to check a new message once on one computer; it will be marked as read on the other computer) and you can use server-based folders. You can enable IMAP in your GMail webmail settings (the same place you enabled POP).

  • IMAP and Apple Mail - not working properly

    Hi all,
I am using Apple Mail and want to use my GMX account with IMAP and are facing 2 issues:
    (1)
While all changes I make directly at www.gmx.ch are being made in Apple Mail on my MacBook Pro, the changes I make in Apple Mail (like moving mails to subfolders, deleting mails, etc.) are not reflected on the GMX server.
    (2)
Sent emails are often put in the Drafts folder AND Sent folder. They are sent, but still appear in the draft folder as they were not sent.
Any idea how to solve these issues?
Thanks a lot & best regards!

You aren't giving us all the relevant information, are you? I bet you access your Gmail account from more than one computer, don't you?

  • Apple Mail, strange inbox messages deletion

I’m curious if anyone experienced something similar to this… We’re 10 people small business with all Macs. Apps we use are Apple Mail, iCal, MS Office 2008, Adobe Acrobat, and most other famous applications. For our email, we all use Apple Mail with IMAP. We used to use POP but we wanted to see same contents on Apple Mail, iPhone, and webmail, so we switched. One of the employees experienced strange problem yesterday, and I haven’t found exactly what caused that incident. She checked her email before she went to bed around 10pm, and there were about 200 messages in inbox. She did shut down her machine. Then, next morning, she turned on her mac and opened Apple Mail. There were no messages in her inbox. Over 200 messages got deleted or moved somewhere else. She found some in deleted folder, but still not everything. So, as I heard this issue, I checked on her web mail. Yes, I saw a bunch of messages in trash folder. So, I moved them all. I talked to our web host and made sure it wasn’t by them. And I’m the only one besides her who has her password. So, this seemed really strange, and I’m wondering what caused it. I’m curious if there is a software bug in Apple Mail. I do see some machines’ Apple Mail can’t quit, so the user must force quit. Has anyone experienced something similar? Thank you for reading my post. Appreciate your time.

    Hi Ernie,
Thank you for your reply and explination.
1/ Yes, the instructions did help. It was obvious, but I haven't ever used Mac's. They are the best, but switching over it's not the easiest.
2/ Have been thinking about changing to another mail client because of this (Thunderbird). Usually everything with iOS X makes sense, but having the MAILBOXES option and sub-structure (Inbox, Flagged, Drafts, Sent, Junk, Trash) is beyond me at the moment (a lightbulb might go off in the future ...)
3/ Not sure why, but now everything is working fine. Could be becuase of the update to iOS 6.

  • Gmail / apple mail, assuming mavericks upgrade issue. Messages from/to and subject header do not match displayed message

    Hi Everyone
Hoping someone has had a similar issue and can help me sort it out.
Since Upgrading to mavericks a few weeks ago, I notice the follwoing issue in my apple mail when searching older messages (newer ones seem fine at the moment).
A lot ( I cant say all, but quite a few well into the 80-90% plus of messages sent pre update) have gotten scrambled. I can search from/ to and subject headers, and they correspond with each other. But when i select the message Im looking for, the message desplayed is from a different sender (with a diferent subject)
Ex I search for JohnDoe (happens if i use search function or just go manually looking thru folders) and subject "Quote", Message comes up (or I find as in manual search). When i select the message the message displayed is not the correct one. Its From JaneDoe with a subject "Thanksgiving" and its message.
Obviously making it a little tricky to track down previous emails.
My mail provider is Gmail (which I have heard mavericks / apple mail have been having lots of issues with).
Hopeefully someone knows what I can do
    Thanks
    BigRed81

    Hello BigRed81,
I have a question on this subject.  I am having the same issue.  I followed the link to the support page for rebuidling a mailbox.  It states :
"When you rebuild mailboxes for IMAP and Exchange accounts, locally stored messages and attachments are discarded, and the messages and attachments are downloaded again from the server to your Mac. Your mailbox appears empty until the download is complete."
I use gmail just for my Inbox.  I pull off all of my messages from the server by filing them on my mac.  So my concern is if I rebuild a mailbox, my mail account is gmail imap, and I do not have copies of my emails on the gmail server anymore that I will lose the majority of my mail because there is nothing to download again.
Do you know if this will happen?  Or I should not be concerned?
    Thanks
    Mykol

  • Gmail/Apple Mail phishing

    Hello,
I have a Gmail account setup in Apple Mail and a few days ago all my friends that use Gmail (through a browser) received a message saying that my emails might be phishing mail. But when I send emails from Gmail directly from a browser this message doesn't appear anymore.
So my guess would be that Apple Mail is changing the authentification of my mails when sending them. But why? And why did it change all of a sudden?
I'm using an MacBook Pro with Mavericks installed.
    Thanks for the help!
    DC

It maybe that the Gmail servers are responding to your mails using Apple Mail originating on another network ( your ISP IP address), whereas when logged into the website you connected directly to their server.
How many recipients are you sending to, the Gmail software may be responding to having a larger number of recipients, again it would probably ignore these if you are using the web mail in your browser.

  • Migrating gmail account from POP to IMAP in Apple Mail - avoid duplicates?

I have a massive gmail account full of three years or more of messages. On OS X Mail I have a POP account that I have been using since the beginning, and I have always left a copy of messages on the gmail server, so it has three years worth on there.
So my question is, I want to disable the POP account and add an IMAP account for gmail, but how can I do this without the IMAP downloading allllll of my messages over again? Because I literally do not want to have TWO copies of each message from the past three years... oh heck no.
There has to be a solution to this. I don't know if the new version of Mail is smart enough to see that a copy of a message already exists, and not download it again -- somehow I doubt it's that smart. Is there a way on gmail to mark all of the mail that's on the server currently as being "not-for-download"?
I'm being forced into this because for whatever reason, one of my two Macs decided it's not going to download POP messages that the other one has already downloaded, even though the messages are still on the server!!

I found this great set of mail AppleScripts:
    http://homepage.mac.com/aamann/Mail_Scripts.html
It includes one script to delete duplicate messages. So if we can't find a way to do this right, then I'll just download all the duplicates then delete them. Of course I don't want to actually do that, lets call this the nuclear option.
So can anyone think of a way to make an IMAP account for my gmail without it downloading all the messages again that I have already downloaded?

  • Gmail IMAP through Apple Mail 6.0

I have been using POP for several years, have decided to use IMAP as it's supposed to give you much more flexability with use va gmail.com or mail.app
In order to switch over, I had to create a new IMAP acct, and delete the POP acct.
Everything worked fine, except, I would actually like to have "ALL Mail" load into my acct's inbox. It does show up under the Gmail tab on bottom.
Anyone iron this minor issue out?
    Thanks!

The Inbox in Mail.app automatically reflects the inbox of the IMAP account to which it is connected. You need to get all the messages into Gmail's actual Inbox. If you visit gmail.com in a browser, you can go into "All Mail", select all the messages, and click "Move to Inbox".
