IMAP, iPhone and Mail

I picked up an iPhone a month ago. and switched to IMAP for my mail reading. Mail has been working great for a few weeks, but recently my laptop is having sync issues with the mailbox. New messages are coming in on my iPhone with no problem. On the desktop, when i wake for the day and check mail I can see it reading the messages, but they do not appear. I have tried to re-sync, rebuild, take the box online/offline, etc. The only solution is to login to my web client, move the new messages to another box, and then move back to the Inbox. Once my laptop is open, any new messages come in fine, it just seems to be some issue with when I go to sleep.
I have not tried removing the account from Mail prefs. Would this do the trick?
Very frustrating!

_*5 minutes later_:* I realize I need to be more clear. I see two copies of the messages when viewing them in a smart folder. However, when I view the GMail Inbox, I see only one copy. The only rule for the smart folder is From contains comics. Why would this lead to two copies? The preference for including messages in Trash is not selected. I'm out of guesses.

  • The Mail on my iPhone and "Mail" on my Mac doesn't sync. Any advices?

The Mail on my iPhone and "Mail" on my Mac doesn´t sync.
The Inbox is the only one that does. Not the sent etc.

On my computer, on Mail-Settings-Account its filled in with my: @me.com and also @mac.com as emailadress. And on Server sent messages (SMTP) with: iCloud.
So I think this should be right...?
(I cant really view any adress to the left of Inbox at the top).
On the phone (iPhone3), on Settings-iCloud-Account it says @mac.com. When I try to change it to @me.com it says its already connected to that. So I guess it shouldnt matter.
I really cant make it work.
When I had MobileMe, before moving to iCloud it used to be alright...

  • Iphone and mail

I have previously posted re message received icon on iPhone showing red figure that mail is received but I had nothing in my inbox. This is resolved by resetting. Now I am receiving mail which says 'this message has no content' and is dated 1971! This so far has also been solved by resetting after which these mails are no longer there.
This resetting is fine but could there be something wrong which causes the problems in the first place-don't think I should have to rest at least once a day.
    Thanks

    Hello jaepluss,
The behavior you're describing applies to POP or POP3 accounts. IMAP email account will reflect the same status for messages on all clients that use the IMAP account.
In the case of a GMail account, make sure IMAP is enabled. You can find it in the "Forwarding and POP/IMAP" tab of the GMail account settings on your webmail page.
Also make sure the GMail account on your Mac is setup as an IMAP account and not a POP account.
If you delete a message on your GMail account on your iPhone, you should, after a brief delay, find the message in the Trash folder on your webmail page.
If you had the gmail account setup on the Mac as a POP account and synced the Mail settings to the iPhone via USB, then you may need to delete the GMail account from the iPhone and manually setup the account on the iPhone. The iPhone will setup the account as IMAP.
Some accounts support push mail as well:

  • Deleting message on iphone and mail on mac

How do I set up my iphone and/or mac to do the following:
If I delete an email message on my iphone (yahoo mail account), it will also delete it from Mail on my mac?
    Thanks!

The account must be accessed as an IMAP account with both email clients.
Yahoo supports accessing a Yahoo account as an IMAP account with the iOS Mail app, but Yahoo does not support accessing the account as an IMAP account with an email client on your computer as is possible with a free Apple iCloud account and with a Gmail account.

  • DBmail imap server and Mail

Since the last upgrade I have been having a lot of crashes. I moved a number of old mail to the server at about the same time. Hence I thought it was something I did.
I have heard from an ISP that there is rumor or maybe more than a rumor about a problem with DBmail and Mail.
    Anyone having problems?
I was getting a crash almost within a minute of starting mail if the imap account was online. I reduce the frequency by moving around a lot of messages and by quickly taking the account offline when ever I have finished pulling down new mail. Even then I get multiple crashes a day when the account is online.
    Suggestions?
PB 17"   Mac OS X (10.4.5)   Very large number of mail messages and folders

Update: Take a look at "Mail crash isolated - DBMail imap interaction"
The problem is now isolated. The bug was reported to the DBMail folks. Hopefully Apple will pick up on the problem in Mail and patch the code for a future release.

  • I remove the password generated by yahoo for my iphone and mail is still active!

I installed 'second sign-in verification' on my Yahoo! account, and then generated a password for my iPhone.
First strange thing after that is that my yahoo mail account was still working. I removed the yahoo account and re-installed it and this time I had to use the password generated by Yahoo.
Now if you loose your iPhone, Yahoo explains that you should sign on to your PC or Mac and remove this generated password so no one can access your mail on your stolen or lost iPhone ( that's  what I installed 'second sign-in verification' ). So I gave it a try, removed it from Yahoo but my Yahoo account on my iPhone is STILL ACTIVE!!! I can send and receive messages, no problem at all.
So your yahoo account is absolutely not protected. This is a major security problem. Please help.

s it possible for apple to provide me with the last coordinates that my phone was at?
    No
I didn't have find my iPhone and iCloud was not active.
Not smart.  Then all you can do is physically look for it.
is it possible to look at data such as pictures by plugging it into their computer??
    no

  • How to get emails on iphone and mail on my computer?

    Hi there,
I use mail on my Mac to get my emails and since getting my iphone i also use this. the problem is when i have mail on my computer open i only get emails sent to it. when i dont have it open i only get them sent to my iphone.
how do i set it up so i will receive all emails on both my phone and computer?
    thanks.

It sounds like you are using a POP3 mail server. POP3 was designed to have only one client, so when a message is downloaded to the client by default it is deleted from the server. This dates from the time when it was considered inconceivable that anyone would have more than one computer to read mail. There is a solution and a workaround. The Solution is to switch to an IMAP mail server. IMAP was designed to support multiple clients; the master copy of each message remains on the server, and the clients sync to it.
The workaround is to change the settings of the mail clients (mail.app and the iPhone) to leave messages on the server. This is not as convenient, because you have to delete them manually, but if you don't have an IMAP server it is the best you can do.

  • Can't use iPhone and Mail at the same time

When my iPhone is on I can't receive Apple Mail on my computer. I get an error message on the computer that says another client is using the mail (or something to that effect). If I turn off the iPhone the error message usually disappears on my computer allowing me to access mail. Is there something I can do so I can keep my iPhone on and also get Apple Mail at the same time?

    Never seeing this problem.
Are you using a MobileMe IMAP account or another provider and account? Is problem when using the Apple Mail application in OS 10.4.11 on your listed G5?

  • Sync e-mail messages between iphone and Mail

Is it possible to sync e-mail message such that when I delete messages from my iphone they go into the trash in Mail (and vice versa)?

Alternatively, besided the above information. You can configure your pop account on Iphone to delete emails from the server when you delete from Iphone (this is the closest thing you can have without IMAP).
which means that if you read your email on the Iphone first and delete something, and when you go back to your desktop Mail, that Mail application will not be able to retrieve the deleted emails (which you deleted via the Iphone).
    Hope this helps.

  • Mail with iPhone and mail app

guys, so my mail app is acting up... it takes forever to receive a new message at times, even tho it pops up on my phone right away...also, when i delete it from the mail app, the email, it never shows deleted in my iPhone... so then i have to go in and delete it again on my iPhone... gmail works great but for some reason i'm having issues with hotmail..
i also tried deleting the account and then recreating it to no avail, i don't know...  i just need it to start receiving messages faster cuz i have it set to automatically which should pop up and notify right away whenever i have a new email right? but my phone always gets it first and then it gets to the mail app like 5 minutes later... and of course, finally, when i delete that email on the mail app, why does it sync on gmail and show it deleted on my iPhone but not with my hotmail/outlook account..
and finally, why the heck after buying a new macbook do i only have the option to setup a phone call... wheres' the chat support? sometimes it shows and sometimes i can't find it for the life of me on here? what's up with that?

This sounds like old fashioned mailbox locking - only one device can log in to the same POP3 mailbox at any time. If you are downloading mail on the iPhone, the iPad will have to wait for the phone to finish before it is allowed to access the mailbox, hence the error message.
Sit the devices side by side and try to check for mail on both at the same time, this might reproduce the problem. If it does, then you'll need to switch to using IMAP, which does not have this issue.

  • Syncing Gmail, iPhone, and Mail

I use my Gmail account on my iPhone - when I delete a message on my iPhone it syncs with Gmail and deletes the message when I login online. However, that message is still there in Mail. Can I set it up so that it is synced with all three?

    Any ideas ?

sooo when you have the device plugged into itunes you'll wanna go to the info tab right above the picture of the device in the summar page, and just uncheck the box that says sync mail accounts, then re check it, sounds like theres in issue with the sync thats going on

  • Sync mailboxes between IMAP accounts and mail

    Hi,
I would like to move messages of a similar nature to a particular folder on my mac and have them move to a folder of the same name on my IMAP account.
For example, I have a folder called "work" on each of my IMAP email accounts. When I move messages into this follder, through mail or on the web, I want them to automatically sync.
I also want the mail in the "work" folder in different email  accounts to show up under the same "work" folder on my mac(s).
Is this possible at all? Thanks.

I always like to start at the beginning and with the most obvious answers . . . Are you certain that you have the accounts on the PB set to be active and online? You can check this in the preferences where you need to select a check box to make the account active (I think it is the first option). You can also right click (or two finger click) on the accounts in the message viewer window's left sidebar and select to take the account online.

  • NOTES on iPhone and Mail

Hi guys. anyway to back up the Notes on my iphone to my mac? Or to ink the sync to the Notes in Apple Mail on leopard?

Notes are included with your iPhone's backup which is created and maintained by iTunes when syncing, along with your iPhone settings (all settings), recent calls, call favorites, SMS messages, and photos captured by your iPhone. Your iPhone's backup is updated if needed as the very first step of the sync process with iTunes. The backup is updated if any of the data included with the backup has changed since the last sync.
What hasn't been provided yet is a method for syncing notes with a supported application on a Mac, and with a supported application on a Windows PC - XP and Vista. More than likely this is in the works, but probably not at the top of Apple's priority list.

  • Problem with Yahoo IMAP and Mail...

I'm having an issue with my Yahoo IMAP setup and mail on my desktop:
I have set up my yahoo email account with IMAP on both my iphone 4 and with mail on macbook pro.  It has worked fine, all my folders are synced up on both devices and everything runs well except for one small problem.  When I read an email on my Iphone, the mail program on my macbook pro never knows.  Every day I come back to my computer, and all of my yahoo emails remain as "new" and "unread" even though I had checked all of them on my iphone.  Its very weird because the opposite is not true - in other words - if I check a Yahoo email on my macbook pro, then my Iphone recognizes it and will show it is "read" as soon as I read it on macbook pro.
I also have an IMAP work email hosted by gator and a gmail account and I do not have this problem, its only on my yahoo account.  I have tried the following settings:
    Incoming server - imap.mail.yahoo.com
    Outgoing server - smtp.mail.yahoo.com
    Incoming server - apple.imap.mail.yahoo.com
    Outgoing server - smtp.apple.mail.yahoo.com
I have set everything to ssl with ports 465 and 993.  Still keep getting this same problem that my macbook pro does not recognize when emails have been read on my iphone (for only the yahoo account).
Anybody else having this problem or have any suggestions on how to fix??

    http://help.yahoo.com/l/us/yahoo/mobile/comms/mail/imap-01.html
To set up IMAP on your mobile device please use these settings:
    Incoming Server - imap.mail.yahoo.com
    Outgoing Server - smtp.mail.yahoo.com
Incoming Port - 993 (requires SSL)
    Outgoing Port - 465 (requires SSL/TLS)
Username: full email address (for example, [email protected] or [email protected])
Password: the password you login to Yahoo! with.
If you are having trouble setting up IMAP on your mobile device we recommend reviewing your phones instruction manual or contacting your mobile provider for support.

You can use the following information to configure IMAP with many mail clients. If you encounter difficulties, we suggest contacting your mail client's customer support department for further instructions -- we're unable to provide assistance with configuring mail clients not listed here.
Incoming Mail (IMAP) Server - requires SSL:     imap.gmail.com
    Use SSL: Yes
    Port: 993
Outgoing Mail (SMTP) Server - requires TLS:     smtp.gmail.com (use authentication)
    Use Authentication: Yes
Use STARTTLS: Yes (some clients call this SSL)
    Port: 465 or 587
Account Name:     your full email address (including @gmail.com) Google Apps users, please enter username@your_domain.com
Email Address:     your full Gmail email address ([email protected]) Google Apps users, please enter username@your_domain.com
    Password:     your Gmail password
Please note that if your client does not support SMTP3 authentication, you won't be able to send mail through your client using your Gmail address.
Also, if you're having trouble sending mail but you've confirmed that encryption is active for SMTP in your mail client, try to configure your SMTP server on a different port: 465 or 587.
