IMAP issues in Lion Mail.app?

Hello...I've been dealing with a snarky email issue with Lion Mail.app for several months. The issue is that Lion Mail does not have the same email counts as the corresponding web mail server for that account shows, either grand total, or folder by folder.
Snow Leopard Mail, and Tiger Mail DO agree with the web server, and Thunderbird 8.0 installed in Lion does agree exactly with web mail.
Based on these observations, a lot of testing, and several deleting of email accounts and re-setting them up again, my feeling is that there is something wrong with Lion Mail.app's ability to handle IMAP
I certainly do like the Mail.app and it's my first choice, but I need to see an accurate view of my mail. Lion's Mail simply isn't giving it to me.
Any thoughts from those who've had an experience like this with Lion Mail.app? If you've had this problem and fixed it, how DID you fix it?
Thank you,
ray

  • Mountain Lion Mail.app Sends Email Several Times While Drafting Reply

Using Mail.app in Mountain Lion and the default configuration of Gmail via IMAP (as configured by Mail.app) when I reply to an existing message, Mail.app sends the partially completed email message several times while I am drafting the message, without me hitting the send button. This does not occur when composing new messages. I have not yet determined what is causing the message to send. My working theory is that it is sending the message each time a draft is saved to the server. Any insight on what is happening (or confirmation that other people are experiencing the same behavior) would be appreciated.

I have 4 accounts running, 2 POP and 2 IMAP, after doing some checking today with a mac engineer online, it appears that it is incoming mail only affected and only on the POP accounts. I had previously tried recreating the accounts but as from today even just quitting Mail and reopening no longer works... the engineer has had to exculate my call to a specialist who in turn has now had to send it off to a specialist team to work on. When I get results, I will post them in case it helps someone else.

  • Lion Mail.app won't sync with Exchange 2003

    Hello,
After upgrading to Lion, I am having an issue with my Exchange email in Mail.app. I get new emails, however if I file any emails from the Inbox into another folder and then leave view another folder or exit Mail, when I return the emails are back in the Inbox again. It is as if Mail is not syncing my changes up to the Exchange account.
This issue did not begin until I moved to Lion. I have compared my settings to another co-worker, who is also on Lion and connecting to Exchange 2003 and everything appears to be the same.
    Thoughts? Solutions?

    RevRangwar,
Yes, I think I was. I went ahead and removed my Exchange account from Mail and re-created it as Exchange IMAP, and it appears to have resolved the issue.
    Thanks for the help.

  • Missing IMAP Folder in Yosemite Mail.app?

    Hi, folks —
Stopped using Mail.app a couple years (and a couple iMacs) ago, as I was getting terrible spinning beach balls. With the release of Yosemite, I thought I'd give it a go again. I'm using a new dreamhost-hosted IMAP mail account set up a couple weeks ago.
Initial setup had no errors. I was able to see all built-in folders "under" Inbox (Drafts, Sent, etc), as well as the two I created myself ("Action" and "Archive").
I used the "Use this mailbox for" command to get Drafts, Junk, Trash and Sent to work right.
At this point, I had the following at the top of the Mailboxes column:
    Inbox
       - Action
       - Archive
I could click on all three to view messages in that folder.
    1. I selected "Archive"
    2. I chose "Use This Mailbox For" --> "Archive folder"
    3. BOTH "Action" and "Archive" subfolders disappeared, leaving just "Inbox" (with VIPs just below it )
    At this point:
    • I can find my Inbox and Archive messages by clicking the appropriate mailbox
    • I can also find items in the Action folder by searching — the item appears in the results with the note that it is in the Action folder.
    • I can confirm that the Action folder still exists, by reviewing the webmail interface for this account.
Any idea how to get this folder back visible? I've quit and restarted Mail a few times. Was just starting to trust Mail.app again

I've got my Archive folder visible by clicking Archive icon on one of mine inbox emails. It have appeared in side bar and shows me all of my messages now as suppose to. Maybe same thing will be with VIP, but I don't use this feature so I can't tell you

  • Mail missing in OS X Lion Mail.app

I always keep copies of all my sent emails in Mail.app from OS X Lion, at least since April 2010 (before I used Thunderbird). Today I was looking for some email I sent in September 2010 to some friend (I was sure about this, was about his birthday) but found nothing. Indeed, all email sent before December 2010 does not appear anymore in the "sent" folder.
I also remember in the last weeks, this old email on the "sent" folder, the subject was shown but could never read again the email message body.
    Amy hints?
PS: I remember some of the things that I have been activating lastly were "show messages by conversation" and sometimes I rebuild some of the folders

If you still can't accept or install the apps, associate your Apple ID with your user account. Then sign in to the App Store with the same ID.

  • OS Update 10.9.1 did NOT fix Gmail syncing issues with Apple Mail App?

Is it just me? Or is anyone else having the same issues of gmail still NOT syncing accross iPad and Mac Mail app in spite of the "update/fix" to OS? My mail on my three Macs and one iPad are still never synced corrctly. When I try "syncronize all mail boxes" in the mail app of the mac, it does not work.
I look directly at my Gmail online thorugh Safari on the Google site and see I have 2 emails in my IN box. Yet on one Mac it has 15 (13 of ehcih were deleted several hours ago). On another Mac it has 18. On the iPad it has it right as that is where I begain looking at end editing email today.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks!

  • TS3899 Has anyone else had issues with the mail app after downloading the 6.1.2 update on their iphone 5?

After downloading the 6.1.2 update on my iphone 5, the mail app won't even open, nor will the mail settings in the settings section. Has any one else had this problem, if so is there a way to fix it?

I've updated two iPhone 3GS to iOS6.1.2. Both no longer work with Hotmail. Tried deleting account followed by a reset. Both still stuck trying to verify account for about 5mins before failing to verify account information. Giving up at this point as I cannot bill Apple for the hours spent so far trying to fix this. Lately I'm spending more and more time resolving issues with Apple software iOS and OSX ML. Apple's reputation is falling rapidly. Such a pity.
Moved to Safari trying to log in over a web browser. That failed as well. Cleared the cache and cookies followed by a reset. Enabled accept cookies to Always and then was able to log in to hotmail and see emails through Safari.
I realise that 3GS is relatively older technology but iOS 6 has not been good to this platform. Everything runs slower than before and there are bugs I'm seeing that are not in the public domain. It's not a hardware fault as my wife's phone is behaving the same way. She's not too pleased either IMHO.
These issues are not happening on Ipad after applying the same update.

  • OSX Lion Mail.app bug in signatures containing a URL

This is highly reproducable: try adding an image followed by text in a signature in Mail.app. Now select the image and add a url (CMD+K) e.g. to your company website. So far this should look the way you expect. Now click on some other preference, so Mail saves the signature. I have multiple signatures, so I just click any other signature. Click back on the signature you have just created, and notice how all text that came after the image now is underlined.
    Why?
There's a bug in the way Mail saves the webarchive file for the signature (~/Library/Mail/V2/MailData/Signatures/<blabla>.webarchive. When you open this file, you will find a bunch of binary bla, followed by invalid (see missing quotes in attributes below) HTML, that will contain your image similar to this:
    <a href="http://www.mywebsite.com/">
    <SPAN class="Apple-string-attachment"><OBJECT height=53 width=157 type=application/x-apple-msg-attachment data="cid:[email protected]"></OBJECT></SPAN>
Don't ask me why Mail capitalizes just these tags and not any other tags, but the most important bit is that Mail forgets to add the closing tag </a>, so now everything trailing the image is linked too.
I cannot reproduce this in Safari, so apparently Mail and Safari do not share code here. I have tried what happens when copy/paste a valid rendered HTML file with the appropriate signature text from Safari into Mail, but the result is the same.

also via applescript same beahviour, composing a message and including an attachment after setting the signature make underlined all the text after the first email adress inside the signature.

  • IMAP Issues using between mail/iphone - godaddy hosted

I just got email for my domain that is hosted with godaddy. I have IMAP and have set it up properly regarding the settings.
When I send myself an email and read it on my iphone it doesn't show as read on apple mail? If I close and reopen apple mail it shows as read????
If I do it in reverse and read it on apple mail it shows as read on the iphone. Very strange, need help!!!

Right, I've just had a mess around with the settings and have deleted the original mailbox from my account. Then I followed the steps on this blog - http://www.illusion-interactive.com/content/how-sync-hotmail-ios7-using-imap (which I didn't need to go quite as far as it seemed to do all the advanced settings input automatically).
After a quick test I can confirm it now works! For some reason my Hotmail account set up on the iPhone was set to POP3 rather than IMAP.
Thanks to your heads up though I managed to get it sorted. Cheers!

  • Display issues after opening Mail.app

Greetings, all -- I am the personal tech support for my mother in Missouri, though I live in Los Angeles. I bought her a MacMini with OS X (Panther), she has a DSL connection and her WiFi is set up. I operate on a G4 OS X (Tiger), and typically, once she's all set up, she's good. However, as I was walking her through how to email a music file, her system has done something I can't pinpoint to advise her to correct. My system is just different enough not to be able to recreate the problem, nor find the same menus to hunt for solution. The problem happened following this sequence of steps:
She inserted a music disc into the disc-drive, opened iTunes from the Dock, and confirmed that the disc mounted.
She then opened Mail, composed new, then used the "Attach" icon to navigate to the song-file on the inserted CD; she highlighted it and pressed "return" to activate.
At this point she informed me that all addresses in her address book opened up and her computer froze -- wasn't responding to anything. She rebooted by unplugging the Mini, and restarted. When she rebooted, she ejected the CD, and reinserted it. She then opened iTunes, then closed iTunes, then opened Mail. At this point, she informed that the text and menus on her screen had become about 3x usual size, and several windows were too large as to be partially offscreen and unusuable.
Attemped fixes included "Display/Resolution" (set on 600x800-ish), which did nothing -- as well as "Dock" which did change the size of the dock appropriately, but not the rest of the screen. I have a "Show View Options" on my system that allows me to manipulate desktop icon size, font, etc., which her system doesn't have.
    Any insights? THANKS!

She messed with it until she got it back to acceptable. I'm not sure what she did, as she's not sure what she did. The woman is a MASTERmind of unresolvable problems. ;^)

  • Yahoo! Mail glitches with Lion mail client and Address Book app

I had really been looking forward to using my Yahoo! mail account in the Lion mail client but now that it is here and I have set it up and used it for a few days I am noticing the following issues:
New mail is not always received or is received late. Yahoo! Webmail portal shows new items but these sometimes do not appear in Lion mail client even after a manual 'get mail' check.
Mail marked as read in Yahoo! Webmail portal or in mail clients in iOS devices such as iPhone or iPad is not marked as read in Lion mail client, however the reverse does work (i.e. mail marked as read in Lion mail client does mark the message as read in webmail and in clients on iOS devices).
Yahoo! Aliases are not supported. Yes, you can add aliases by inserting the other email addresses in the 'Email Address' field of the account settings, but you cannot add more than one display name.
I have also found that if you turn on Yahoo! contacts via the tick-box in the new 'Mail, Contacts & Calendars' pref pane in System Preferences that I end up with random duplicated contacts. These duplicates are not seen on iOS devices, just in the Address Book app. If you delete a duplicate contact, it deletes the contact altogether. However, I have found that if you keep contacts unticked in the pref pane and add your Yahoo! account the old-fashioned way (i.e. via the Address Book app's own preferences) then the contacts sync through perfectly with no duplications.
I would be interested to know if anybody else is experiencing these issues. It may be worth noting that mine is not a @yahoo.com address but @xtra.co.nz which belongs to my ISP here in New Zealand, but the mail is managed by Yahoo!. The account works perfectly as a Yahoo! account on iOS devices and does appear to be working in Lion, except for these small glitches but I don't imagine these are specific to @xtra.co.nz addresses.
    Thanks
    Steve

i've had the same experience here.
essentially it seems like lion mail.app just takes an incredibly long time to pickup new changes from the IMAP server at yahoo.
ios and webmail are obviously much quicker.
if it is working on ios, why does is it so delayed in mail?
    any solutions out there?

  • Gmail ... IMAP ... Mac Mail.app ... Mavericks ... SOLUTION -1

    hi all,
hopefully this will give you enuff info to figure out what to do (if anything), but i urge you to read thru the links below to see if you are experiencing the same issues or not, & if so, what to do about them.
    THE BACKGROUND INFO:
i've been using the Mac's Mail.app pretty exclusively since its inception, and with Gmail's IMAP option since mid-2009. the settings have always stayed & worked well...
    • on Gmail.com > Settings > Forwarding & POP/IMAP >
        - IMAP Enabled
        - Auto-Expunge Off
        - Move Deleted Messages to the Trash
        - Folder Size Not Limited
    • also on Gmail.com > Settings > Labels >
        - Only the Inbox, Sent, Drafts, Spam, & Trash System Labels CHECKED to "Show in IMAP"
    • then in the Mail.app > Preferences > Accounts > Mailbox Behaviors >
        - i had everything CHECKED & all the dropdown options set to "One Month Old"
--note: a year or so ago, i had to UNcheck the option to Store Drafts on server due to a hideous multiplication of draft messages showing up in the Trash
    • also in Mail.app > Preferences > Accounts > Advanced >
        - the IMAP Path Prefix was always "[Gmail]" to allow folders to show properly in the Mail.app
    • and lastly in Mail.app >
        - made sure the Sent, Drafts, Spam, & Trash folders/labels were properly mapped via the Mailbox menu > "Use This Mailbox For" option
...and i've always kept 'local' mailbox folders for archiving old emails in the "On My Mac" section in addition to keeping more current emails for reference in the "Gmail" section.
    THE INITIAL PROBLEM:
after upgrading my Mac to Mavericks OS 10.9, i started noticing that any email i would delete or move from my inbox kept re-appearing in my inbox after changing views (like going to another mailbox then back to the inbox).
of course this drove my OCD crazy, & thus began the research. i've read a LOT about this issue from official sources to user discussions and have pieced together a procedure that seems to be working (for the most part) for me.
    THE RESEARCH HIGHLIGHTS:
a lot of people, tek/industry people, & blogs are pointing to these webpages as good summaries of issues & fixes (yes, there are SO many more, but i personally found these to be the most helpful in my quest)...

              http://www.macobserver.com/tmo/article/making-gmail-and-os-x-mavericks-mail-play -well-together
    THE DISCLAIMER:
of course, if you aren't greatly affected by the Mail/Gmail wonkiness, then it might be worth waiting another week or two (or 3 or 4...) & keep your eyes on further reports from these sites (links above or others you may like better) in case Apple &/or Google pushes an update to remedy the situation. likewise, if you do make these changes, it would still be a good idea (imho) to keep up'to'date in case such pushes do come out & affect these changes too. ugh ;-)
    THE OUTCOME:
the below process, for me, has been SUCCESSFUL in every aspect except one...
    THE LAST PROBLEM:
whenever i move a message from the gmail inbox (or any other gmail imap folder/label) to a local folder in the "On My Mac" section, it moves it just fine, but then it keeps a copy in the gmail "All Mail" folder/label, when i would want it deleted from gmail.
unlike when i "delete" a message, where gmail appropriately moves that message to the trash box, in this situation it simply strips the message of "any" label, and thusly it stays in the All Mail. so if anybody can amend this with a fix for that, we should be all set :-)
but aside from that last issue, the below procedure has brought back my Mail.app program to use Gmail as "I" believe it normally should work, and has always worked pre-Mavericks.
THE PROCEDURE (assuming all your settings are set like mine were as listed above):
go to gmail.com in Safari (or other web browser) > Log in > Settings > Labels > and check "Show in IMAP" for the "All Mail" system label (which was previously a no-no, but now a yes-yes).
also on that same page, you will need to UNcheck the "Show in IMAP" option for Drafts. and then slide over and for BOTH the Drafts & Spam labels, click the "show if unread" options.
then go to each & every one of your custom "Labels" (you know them as Mailbox Folders). they will all start with "[Gmail]/foldername". click on each and remove the "[Gmail]/" leaving ONLY your custom folder name.
once done, click on your Inbox to get you out of the settings area.
now you will need to go thru ALL of your folders/labels (i know... big ugh!) to fix the labels attached to all the emails inside them ;-)
click a folder/label to reveal all the emails inside it.
click the checkbox in the header row of buttons/options that will cause all emails on that page to be selected/checked.
then, IF you have more emails than what fits on that page (in other words, if you have more than one page of emails in this folder as indicated by the "1-###" and page arrow buttons at the top right), then you will see a new small row that sits above the list of emails that says "All ### conversations on this page are selected. Select all ### conversations in "Folder/Label Name" - you WILL NEED TO CLICK this text link!!!
once you have, the sentence will change to "All ### conversations in "FolderName" are selected" - do NOT click the "Clear selection" link next to that.
next, click on the "Label As..." button in the header row of button/options - the icon looks like a price tag of sorts.
then in the resulting popup box that lists all your folders/labels, you will want to make sure ALL checkboxes are UNchecked EXCEPT the single folder/label that these emails are in. note: some of them may or may not have dashes instead of checkmarks in the boxes - you will need to click it to check it and then click it again to get it UNchecked & UNdashed.
after you've got only the one label checked that should be checked, then click the APPLY word at the bottom of that little popup box. note: if all the selected emails are labled correctly, then you won't see the "Apply" option & you can simply move on to the next folder.
if you get a dialog confirmation box pop up asking if you are sure you want to continue... click OK.
then WAIT! this may take a while depending on how many emails it's affecting and how fast/reliable your internet speed/connection is. when you see the "Loading..." notification at the very top of the page change to "All conversations have been removed from (and it lists them all)", then you can move on & do that same procedure (steps 5-13) to fix another folder/label.
WHEN DONE WITH ALL THAT, you can exit your browser.
now go to the Mail.app > Mail menu > Preferences > Accounts > Advanced > and remove the "[Gmail]" text from the "IMAP Path Prefix" field.
then go to the Mail.app > Mail menu > Preferences > Accounts > Mailbox Behaviors tab and if the Store Drafts on Server option is checked, UNcheck it.
then close the Mail.app Preferences window to get the option to SAVE that change!
now go to the Mailbox Menu > Synchronize > Gmail, in case it hasn't started doing that on its own.
then open the Window Menu > Activity, so you can see when it's done synchronizing. this may take a while if you've got a lot of mail. according to some, it took a day! so, just kick back & leave it alone till then.
    THE END FOR NOW:
hopefully this helps other folks that were setup like me & want to keep it working that way. and yeah, again, if anybody knows how to fix the last problem described above, please let us know.
    .peace.:.jason.

    hi Dean Suhr,
i just went back & re-read my posts... i find no where that i said anything about dragging emails into the ALL MAIL folder. i mentioned the issues with dragging messages into "any other folder that i've created" from either the INBOX or "any other folder that i've created".  it copies instead of moves the message. but ONLY Mac Mail does this. the iOS Mail app does NOT do this - it moves as it should move.
as far as what you said "who cares what Gmail says the labels are"... well... I do :-)
there are occasions where i need to utilize the web browser gmail interface, and i want it to be correctly synced.
i don't think it's unreasonable to want that, as that's how it's been for YEARS, till now, AND that's how it still is with iOS 7.
besides, what happens if i get a different device/computer and need to add the same account - i imagine it will not sync up correctly if gmail has labels on messages that it shouldn't.
fortunately for me, i don't have quite as many messages & accounts as you; it only takes aprox 30 minutes for mail to sync up after i started over with it.
    .peace.:.jason.

  • How can I repair a corrupted Mail app in Mountain Lion?

Let me begin by stating I've been experiencing several issues in the Mail app off and on. Today, I was having trouble with my iCloud.com account not sending or receiving.
I go to remove and re-add the account under iCloud settings under SyStem Prefs, and I'm told that the mail account cannot be setup through the Preferences pane. I'm told to set it up in the mail app itself, but this resulted in it adding the imap version, rather than using push mail.
I decided to go and find every mail app related preferences file in the library subdirectories,, and deleted the mail folder. I did not locate any other .plist file anywhere else; although I could have missed them.
Can someone please point out what else I can do to clear out Mail of all data and start fresh? Now when I launch Mail, it displays my prior account info, in spite of the prior deletions.

When you open Mail, and go to the accounts, highlight the account giving you problems the click the minus sign at the bottom of the column to remove that account.  The click the plus sign and setup the account again the way it should be.
See if that clears up the issue.
Alternative is to reinstall ML, but you would be better off trying to straightern out the account itself first.
To reinstall, restart holding the Command and R keys, then select reinstall, do not erase and install or you will lose all of your content.
