IMAP messages disappear/reappear after restart

I'm still having a problem that some other people were having a while ago. I'm using Apple Mail with IMAP and I'll be working along going through email when all of a sudden almost everything in my inbox disappears. If I wait
You can see the unanswered archive question here:
http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=7246441
Are people still experiencing this? Has there been no resolution?
At one point when the messages were disappearing, I noticed the Mail activity monitor said, "Receiving 1 of -45 headers" weird, huh?
Please help if you have information. Thanks!
Philip

Hi Philip,
I have the same problem and unfortunately I cannot take the company's mail server down
I also checked my mails with Thunderbird and via the web interface, it worked fine. This really starts to annoy me since it is actually the second time I have this problem with apple mail.
The first time removing the Envelope files in ~/Library/Mail solved the problem, this time it did not help. If you are experiencing this strange behaviour again, it might help to remove the Envelope files, at least once

  • IMAP boxes disappear & reappear, continually reload, subfolders move random

I am having a very strange problem here which started about a week ago, maybe someone can point me in the right direction:
    1) I use both gmail and my domain's server email which load into Mail.app. I use gmail because I like their spam filter and I use their SMTP because where I am, my ISP SMTP server isn't very reliable. Gmail solves my outgoing mail problem, but doesn't support showing when mail has been answered and that is a useful feature.
    2) My procedure is to open up gmail in my browser, mark and delete the spam (IMAP Account), then close the browser and open mail.app
    3) I have a rule in mail.app which moves my gmail to my domain mail Inbox where I organized with folders and subfolders and use many signatures to send different email out to customers. Mail has been very good as you can do quite a lot with it compared to most other email clients for OSX. I do this for three domains, with several email addresses within each domain.
    4) In mail.app, I can choose which mailbox to use for sent mail, junk, etc. This way I am sending from my domain, the email response shows and is linked to that mail so I can look for old responses fast and organize things by department. Spotlight or search works fast and perfectly. It's a good solution which I have used for well over a year (whenever gmail released IMAP services), or was, until a week ago.
Problem 1) As of now, when I open the mail account, the domain subfolders which should be below my Inbox are no longer there. If I look lower to the account folder, sometimes the folders show up there, sometimes they do not show up at all, but they are online in my web-based mail with my hosting company. The mails are not lost, but mail.app is not connecting with the host correctly as they appear and disappear randomly.
Problem 2) Every time I open mail.app now, most of my email inbox folders have to download all of the mail and their attachments again, even though I have the boxes in preferences correctly checked. Once the inbox loads all of the mail, then the subfolders disappear. This is very consistent. As long as there is no mail showing in the inbox, then the subfolders are showing correctly. As soon as the inbox is loaded showing mails, then the subfolders either disappear or move.
Problem 3). The mailboxes that my hosting's webmail service creates (like deleted mail, mail to delete, trash, trash delete, whatever, it's a Windows server) keep showing up in Mail. They never did that before. Once I deleted them, I could see them online, but not in mail. All was as it should be. Now they keep coming back every time I reconnect and I often have to reset which mailbox is being used for junk, sent mail, drafts, etc.
Problem 4). This same problem happens on all three of my machines, two being PPC and one Intel, running 10.4.11 and 10.5.5 respectively. The problem started happening on all my machines at the same time. This is also connection from three different ISPs.
Solution? My hosting company says that they have changed nothing in their settings (IMAP uses Port 143 and I do get a time-out error sometimes but not often). They have tried it in Outlook and do not get the same results, they say it's working fine. I have tried to subscribe in Leopard (you can't do this is Tiger, only in Leopard, but Mail.app says I have no subscribed folders, which is not true). The Quota Limits shows the standard Mail.app mailboxes, the Subscription List shows nothing, and no way to change it).
I tried Thunderbird and it connects faster, downloads faster and the folders are OK, but I still get mail folders appearing randomly. Sometimes I get mail folders appearing that I have not ever created with names like "System Mail". Sometimes I get mail boxes which are stored On My Mac which appear on IMAP suddenly. (Also, Thunderbird has poor signature file support, so I would prefer to use Mail, it's a better program overall.)
I have tried rebuilding the mail accounts, have done this, realistically, 25 times. Yesterday I did a complete reinstall of 10.5.5 just because I am at the end of my rope. Now I am about ready to change hosting companies as I am still having the same trouble. I am in the process of archiving all of my mail into Gmail so I can switch hosts if that is the problem. But, I would like to know first if that is actually the problem, since overall I am pretty happy with my hosting company. They are in Arizona and speak my language and they are easy to talk with. However, they do not have a Mac there so they cannot test my situation from their facility.
It's a strange problem in that one, I have used the system fine for well over a year with perfect results. Two, it happens on three different Mac used in three different places (office, home, and another person's home), and three, I have not changed hosting companies, I have been using the same host for two years and they deny changing any settings on their end.
The hosting company has no answer for me, they are not Mac users, and say that it's perfect in Outlook, but it's not actually perfect in Outlook either as mailboxes still appear randomly and sent mail ends up in my inbox randomly even in Outlook. They just don't realize it as they are not watching my mail boxes except when I am on the phone with them.
I am not having trouble with my websites. I do not have this problem with Gmail, only with my domain webmail.
I have to use Windows because of a particular shopping cart system I use, but IMAP systems should be the same on Windows or anything else. Some how, some where, some one has changed some thing. Any idea what and how to solve the problem?
    Thanks,
    John

  • New phone, text messages disappeared after less than a day's use

On my son's brand new phone, a Sprint Curve 8330, which he picked up this afternoon, he's been getting texts all day from friends, then at about 12:30AM he realized that all the previous day's texts are gone.  Only texts I sent him after midnight are there.  Why?  This is a fresh new device.  He installed Sprint TV and Sprint Music, and I installed Slacker and Viigo, but haven't even activated them (didn't have his email address to register the apps.)  I can't see this being memory-related, having under 10 hours use on the device, with almost no app usage.
I thought that maybe I just didn't understand how it works, that it was "filing them away" into a folder for a previous day or something, but searching around did not find any texts from yesterday (just a few hours ago.)
    Any help appreciated.
Not a very inspiring introduction to the BlackBerry world...
    Thanks,

I've done this reset multiple times. And have succesfully done.
You said that you installed some app and after that this thing happened right? Did you install in mass memory or memory card? If on memory card then try removing your memory card and see if it helps.
If you have installed in mass memory then sometimes it can be problem. Assuming your phone is switched off right now! Just connect your mobile to PC/lappy. Wait for couple of minutes, your PC would recognise it as a storage device. If it recognises then copy all the important data you want to keep and format the memory card and mass memory. (I'd this problem when installed something like theme/app from untrusted developer.)
This method worked for me. If not then try again the hard reset
Hold down the following three buttons Volume Down + Camera + Menu button at the same time. (It will Hard reset your Phone, and may takes several minutes to restart your Phone)
While holding these buttons, hold the power button to switch on the phone. And remember press all these buttons carefully as you might not fully press all the buttons!
Release the buttons when the phone shows the nokia hands logo or shows other signs of life like the language selection screen.
As you might be aware of the data loss while attemping this method be sure you will lose everything.
If nothing else works then you might unfortunately visit a local nokia care.

  • Dashboard widgets keep reappearing after restart!

    Hi all.
Every time I reboot my mac, a series of widgets keep reappearing in my dashboard that I previously removed. It's just a couple iterations of the calculator and stickies. But every time I delete them, after reboot they come back.
I tried deleting my dashboard prefs but for some reason this didn't help!
    Any ideas?

    HI Scott,
    To remove a widget:
To open Dashboard, press the Dashboard key.
If your keyboard doesn’t have a Dashboard key, press Fn-F12. If your keyboard doesn’t have an Fn key, press F12.
Click the Open + button to open the widget bar.
    Click Manage Widgets.
    Do one of the following:
To remove a widget’s name from the widget bar, deselect it in the list.
To remove a widget from your computer, click its Remove - button, and then click OK. Widgets that are preinstalled with Mac OS X don’t have Remove buttons.

  • Mail inbox messages disappear with gmail IMAP

I've just set up an IMAP connection to my gmail account in Mail and after reading a message in my inbox, the message disappears from my inbox and I can only find the email in All Mail.
Looking in gmail, the gmail inbox still contains all of the emails that should be in it, so I know that gmail isn't filtering or archiving read emails. Additionally, on my phone my inbox shows properly so I know that my problem lies with Mail itself.
I have deleted all my rules from Mail, so I know no filtering is going on at the Mail level either.
If anybody could please help me out...
    Thanks,

  • Moving mail users to IMAP from POP. Issues with sent messages disappearing

Our mail server has been working well for several years, running currently on Mac OX 10.4.10 (Xserve G5). All user accounts have always been setup for pop and imap in WGM but we have just recently started to move client settings to IMAP. No changes to the mail settings in server admin except opening the firewall to include port 993 for imap ssl.
The issue is that all users appear to loose the sent mail records when using the apple mail apps. After a message has been sent, the message record stays in the Apple generated sent box for that account and then disappears (presumably after syncing with the server).
The mail app "account" settings shows that sent messages are to be stored on the server and never to be deleted (in mailbox behavior).
If you do a "get info" on the mailbox, sent messages don't show on the server either under "Sent". I also created an additional mailbox "Sent Messages" to be used as sent mailbox location. mailbox shows up on the server, but no mail is added when sent from the apple mail app.
Now, I would have assumed this to be an issue of the client app, but the behavior is consistent across several machines and also on new mail app configurations.
When using Entourage with the same account however, the server works as anticipated and all sent messages are stored on the server (in the "Sent Messages" box). Any Entourage sent messages also show up in the "Sent Messages"mail box of the apple mail apps.
When using iphones, the behavior is somewhat unclear. The iphone mail settings (under advanced) show the "server" selected ("Sent Messages") for sent mail, yet the actual iphone mail app lists that folder as just "Sent". When sending messages, that mailbox shows the Entourage sent messages and iphone sent messages, but the iphone messages never appear on the server.
This only happens on sent messages; inbox, drafts, deleted and junk mail boxes work perfect. This also happen on any imap client account I setup, not just a specific one.
Any suggestions? Any setting I am overlooking? Using Entourage for all users is not an option...
    Thanks for any help...

Please see my post and how it was resolved:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1181356&tstart=0
When I had that issue, I tried using Apple Mail app and noticed that Sent Mails are getting lost. Try sending an email using WebMail. You might see similar "Permission Denied" error. Try restarting the server and see if the issue still exists.

  • Sent messages only appear in the sent folder after restarting Thunderbird

Hi, my problem is that sent messages do not appear in the sent folder unless I restart Thunderbird. I have the sent 'copies' box de-checked as if not although it syncs I end up with two copies (of sent messages).
I am using Thunderbird 31.2.0 on OSX Yosemite connecting via IMAP to ZOHO mail with STARTTLS on 587 for SMTP.
Hope you can advise, I've tried SSL/TLS on 465 also and it is the same. It's a bit of an inconvenience not being able to view the sent messages.
    Many thanks

Interesting to know (the RFC violation) but as you say, perhaps not relevant as such, although if ZOHO wasn't auto-placing a copy in sent then I could check the 'place a copy in' option and it would work ok.
Anyhow, I tried your recommendations and yes, I use both an Android and an iPad to also check my mail but with both disconnected from Wi-Fi the problem still persists. There are a few warnings being reported in the TB error console on the Mac but they just relate to 'mso-table-lspace' for my INBOX.
And for info in Thunderbird on my Ubuntu laptop the problem is exactly the same -
'Place a copy' checked - Messages instantly appear in the sent folder but there are two copies.
'Place a copy' de-checked/Cached connections = 5 - Messages only appear in the sent folder after restarting Thunderbird
'Place a copy' de-checked/Cached connections = 1 - Messages appear in the sent folder on clicking out of the folder and back in.
On Ubuntu there is nothing at all in the error console.
I can work with how things are at this stage as I don't live in the sent folder (rather the inbox), and when you click into it (with the connections cache at 1) the messages do appear, so I suppose that's actually ok.

  • Saving a backup copy of Sent IMAP messages locally due to Sent IMAP messages occasionally disappearing

THE PROBLEM - OCCASIONAL MISSING SENT MESSAGES
As you likely know, quite a few Users have an issue with Mac mail in which every now and then when they send a message the status bar in the lower lefthand corner will hang for a few seconds, the message will be sent after an unusually long delay in sending, and then it will literally disappear in that you cannot find it in the Sent mailbox (or anywhere.) This isn't a new problem to OS X Mail app, and after hours and hours of research, consulting with email and Mac gurus, consulting email providers, trying every setting option from both the Mail app end and the IMAP sever end, and seeing how many others have this exact same issue, I am 100% sure that this is a problem with the Mail application in OS X itself. To date (Feb 4, 2015, OS X 10.10.2 and earlier versions), this problem is yet to be resolved.
IF IT CAN'T BE FIXED, THEN WE NEED SOME SORT OF WORKAROUND
Since I am almost positive that fixing this issue is beyond my control, I am giving up on trying to fix it. However, that still leaves me with a very big problem that harms my own productivity. Subsequently, I need a workaround (quite a few people do, actually.) If a workaround isn't possible, I may have to abandon Mail in favor of another application, which I would prefer not to do.
MY ROUGH WORKAROUND IDEA...ANY THOUGHTS/EXPERIENCES ON HOW TO BEST ACCOMPLISH THIS???
My thought is that if we can get Mail to save a secondary copy of every Sent message to another folder/mailbox that this may save the lost messages so that I can retrieve them in the event they are needed.
The best idea I have thus far is to have Mail create a backup copy of any and every Sent message and to store it on the local disk in a folder/mailbox. This copy would need to be saved immediately at (or immediately prior to) the point of sending so that the message is copied PRIOR to pushing it through the IMAP server (because that is the point in which the message disappears and so copying after sending through a ghost of the IMAP would be too late.)
What do you think the best way to go about doing this would be?...the use of Rules perhaps? I'd like to know how your would go or have gone about doing this, as well as any results noticed. Thanks for the help!

Since you indicated you have an IMAP account, sent messages should still be on the server. Depending on your email provider you are using, you could go to the webmail site for it and see if the sent messages are there. You should check your settings there and make sure it's set to save a copy of the sent message and how it handles it. For IMAP, it's the server's responsibility to save the message, not the computer. The sent message is just a reflected copy on the computer of what's on the server.
I'm not saying there isn't a problem on the computer. Have you tried rebuilding the sent mailbox? Once you rebuild it, quit mail and relaunch it.
If you send messages from the computer and not so much from other devices, you could uncheck store sent messages on the server. This will create a local sent mailbox on the computer. Maybe that will work better for you.
You could also open mail preferences in the composing tab. Check to automatically CC yourself when sending a message. That way you will also get a copy.

  • My messages won't send, then all my messages disappear, I can't make or receive calls, then after a while everything's back to normal? Someone please help

My phone takes forever to send a message, it then after reopening the messages app, will delete all of my texts and iMessages. The app will usually freeze and come up empty with 'create new message'. At the same time it won't let me receive calls, sometimes it will let me make a call but the phone app itself is also then frozen. After 15-45 mins everything will go back to normal and my messages all appear again. I then receive anything that I was sent to me during that time and all my messages then send. I've gone and got an early upgrade from a 4s to a 5s in the hope this would stop and it still hasn't. I heard somewhere that it could be to do with iCloud and it being bugged, would be great if anyone could help

Go through these 4Rs troubleshoots if you haven't done already:
    Restart:
    1. Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button until the red "slide to power off" slider appears, and then slide the slider.
    2. Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button until the Apple logo appears.
Reset: Hold down the Sleep/Wake button and the Home button at the same time for at least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears. Note: You will not lose any data

iMovie 10.0.2 unexpectedly quit and after restarting it  2 (out of 3) projects were disappeared. However I can see "All Projects - 1 of 3selected". I am quite disapointed!!!

    No, I did not.
Meanwhile I have found the reason for the projects disappear in my libraries! The problem is caused by using the dash "#" symbol in my project names.
I have created another project with a dash in the name and the project also disappeared in iMovie with the same effect that the underlying data was still in die library.
Apple should release a warning that some special characters are not allowed to be used in project names or better should solve this.

    Hi,
    Open a Finder  window
Go to the View Menu and chose "Show Path Bar"
This will show the way to the folders and files you navigate to.
In the Finder still, use the Go Menu whilst holding down the ALT key
    Select the Library that appears
    Navigate to the Preferences Folder.
Now Right click the Library in the Path Bar.
    Choose Get Info.
In the panel that opens up check the Ownership and Permissions section
highlight your Name and then use the cogwheel type icon.
Your shortname should appear in a sentence that reads "Make Shortname (me) the Owner" but it should be greyed out if you already Own the folder.
Your name in the list should have Read and Write Permissions.
Do you have Read and Write Permissions an Own the Library folder ?
    Repeat for the Preferences Folder.
Repeat for a file in the Preferences folder called  com.apple.ichat.plist (just highlight the file and then do CMD + i keys (Get Info))
Basically to be able to change a Preference you need permission to Write to the file involved.
However you also need Read and Write permissions to the containing folders.
If it is not sticking then it would seem you do not have those.
