IMAP messages not downloading to local folder?

Hi. I've just switched from an iBook G4 to my new monster, MacBook Pro. However, I've run into a problem:
I'm using an IMAP account in Mail, hence there was no problem getting all my emails to my new computer, as they were all located on the server. However, on my iBook, I stored some of the emails locally as they were too big to store on the server over time. To get them downloaded to a local storage, I simply dragged the messages from my IMAP-folder to my local folders in Mail. I thought this deleted the messages from the IMAP-account and stored the complete message (including attachements) locally. However, now it seems like I was wrong. I've tried to import all the locally stored messages into my new Mac Book Pro, but Mail refuses to import them, even though they're in mbox-format. Then I tried to upload them to the mailserver from the iBook, and then download them to the MacBook Pro. This sort of worked, but then the messages appeared as they were all blank. To me, it seemed like only parts of the messages were downloaded when I first dragged them over to my local folders? So basically, I'm wondering if anyone can give me a hint on what causes this? Am I doing something wrong when I'm trying to download it to a local folder? I'm suspecting this might be the reason, as it seems like I'm using much more storage space on my mailserver than I can find any reason for. Any suggestions? Thanks a bunch!
MacBook Pro, Intel Core Duo 2.33 GHz, 17"   Mac OS X (10.4.9)   2GB RAM

David,
Sorry for not being more specific in my last post. It had been a while since I tried to import, so I trusted my memory on what happened. Obviously a mistake
Anyway, I've now tried to import once again, and you're right, they are in fact .mbox-folders, not files. Also, I've always tried to select the mbox-folder itself, or files within the mbox-folder. What I did wrong, as you pointed out, was that I did not select the folder which contained the mbox-folders.
Now, after I imported using your instructions, everything worked like a charm. I got all my emails imported Thanks a million!
I have one last question, though: To store emails locally instead of on the server, I've always dragged them onto a local folder. Is this the correct way of doing it? Will the emails on the server (which I store locally) be deleted, or will I just get a copy of them stored locally?

Just try to remove the recent update that has been pushed out by Microsfot to Outlook 2013 and Office 365 users. You can do this by following given steps:
Step 1: Open your start menu and click visit your Control Panel.
Step 2: Click Programs and Features.
Step 3: Click View Installed updates.
Step 4: Locate either the KB2837618 or KB2837643 and remove them.
Disable the "Show only subcribed folders" option in Outlook.
Step 1: Right click the name of your account with the issue, then click the IMAP folders link.
Step 2: Outlook will open a box with IMAP folders. There is a checkbox that says, "When displaying hierarchy in Outlook, show the subcribed folders." Uncheck that box.
Step 3: Force sending/receiving within Outlook and everything should synchronize up properly.
    Changing the root folder path
Visit your Account Settings, then Advanced for the mail account that you are having trouble with. This can be located at one of the following:

  • Message "not downloaded from server. You need to take this account online

After upgrading to 10.4.9, when I click on any of the old emails in my inbox I get the message "this message not downloaded from server. You need to take this account online in order to download it."
I can still read all email in any other mailbox.
I can read all email received after upgrading.
    I appreciate any help.
    G4 17 inch   Mac OS X (10.4.9)   1 gb ram

You upgraded to 10.4.9 from what?
If you upgraded from Mac OS X 10.3 or earlier, the problem is that the conversion from Mail 1.x to Mail 2.x is broken. Take a look at the following thread to better understand the problem:
Help! "You need to take this account online in order to download it."
More specifically, if this is a POP account, the following procedure should allow you to fix the Inbox problem. A similar procedure should allow you to fix other mailboxes that might also be affected:
    1. Quit Mail if it’s running.
    2. Make a backup copy of the ~/Library/Mail folder, just in case something goes wrong while trying to fix the problem. You can do this in the Finder by dragging the folder to the Desktop while holding the Option (Alt) key down, for example. This is where all your mail is stored.
    3. Create a new folder on the Desktop and name it however you wish (e.g. Inbox Old). It doesn’t need to have an .mbox extension.
    4. In the Finder, go to ~/Library/Mail/POP-username@mailserver/INBOX.mbox/.
    5. Move the files mbox and Incoming_Mail out of INBOX.mbox, into the Inbox Old folder just created on the Desktop. These files contain all the messages that were in the mailbox before the upgrade to Tiger, and maybe even some messages that had been deleted. mbox is the most important. Incoming_Mail may or may not be present.
    6. Move any strangely-named Messages-T0x... folders to the Desktop (not into the Inbox Old folder). These folders are to be deleted after fixing the problem. They are temporary folders created during an import or an indexing process, and Mail should have deleted them when done. Their presence is a clear indication that something didn’t work as expected. If you’ve been using Mail after the conversion and have already tried to fix the problem by rebuilding the mailbox or something like that, they might contain messages that are neither in Messages proper nor in the mbox file, so keep them around until the problem is fixed.
    7. Move everything else within INBOX.mbox, except the Messages folder, to the Trash.
The result of the above should be that INBOX.mbox contains the proper Messages folder only, and the Inbox Old folder on the Desktop contains the mbox and Incoming_Mail (if it exists) files only. Now, proceed as follows:
    8. Open Mail.
    9. The account’s Inbox should properly display in Mail as many messages as *.emlx files are in ~/Library/Mail/POP-username@mailserver/INBOX.mbox/Messages/. If that’s not the case, select the mailbox in Mail and do Mailbox > Rebuild.
    10. In Mail, do File > Import Mailboxes, choose Other as the data format, and follow the instructions to import the Inbox Old folder that’s on the Desktop.
As a result of doing the above, some messages may be duplicated now. Andreas Amann’s Mail Scripts has a Remove Duplicates script that you may find useful.
Do with the imported mail whatever you wish. You may move the messages anywhere you want and get rid of the imported mailboxes afterwards.
If all is well and you don’t miss anything, the files on the Desktop can be deleted, although you may want to keep them for a while, just in case.
Take a look at the following article (also referenced in the thread I mentioned at the beginning of this post) to learn what you might have done before upgrading to minimize the risk of this happening, and what you may do after fixing the problem to avoid similar issues from happening in the future. DON’T do now what the article suggests, though, as that would make things worse in the current situation:
    Overstuffed mailbox is unexpectedly empty
Ask for any clarifications or if you need further assistance.
Note: For those not familiarized with the ~/ notation, it refers to the user’s home folder, i.e. ~/Library is the Library folder within the user’s home folder.

  • FOUND SOLUTION TO EMAIL ISSUE - "message not downloaded from server"

It took me 4 days to figure it out but there is a solution to the problem "the messsage has not been downloaded from server" and "the message has no content".
I do not have to set up "push" accounts from yahoo or gmail and it works with my corporate email.
Apple can reach me at <Message was edited by: Host> to discuss this issue.

I'm not a computer technician, and if you were to give me a few days looking at the problem, i'm sure I or anyone else could provide a solution. I'm not too bothered about the message appearing 50% of the time as i'm usually within easy reach of a Laptop or PC or can find another method to get access to my email.
So i'm not pi**ed off that you have found a solution. I'm just trying to obtain information for a post that says "FOUND SOLUTION TO EMAIL ISSUE - "message not downloaded from server" in the Apple HELP FORUMS...

  • Deleted messages not going into deleted folder

I am using an IMAP server and the most recent version of Mozilla Thunderbird. (I can't find the version but I just downloaded it this morning.) Under server settings, I have specified that deleted emails are to go into a "Deleted Items" folder. However, when I delete emails from my Inbox, they simply disappear. Any idea how to get them into the correct folder? I have attached a screen shot of server settings. Thanks for your help!

Bestweb does a great job of removing spam before it ever gets to my inbox. I get maybe 4-5/week and I permanently delete those.
I haven't done any compacting of folders yet, as I just started using Thunderbird a few weeks ago. Every 6 months, I move my 'Sent' and 'Deleted Items' to a local folder, where they are stored offline.
The "Deleted Items" folder is on the server. If I access it thought webmail, it has the same emails as Thunderbird on this computer. Using Thunderbird on this computer, I sent myself a test email and then deleted it. It does *not* appear in my Deleted Items folder on this computer nor does it appear in the Deleted Items on my webmail.
I also sent a test email to myself through webmail. If I delete it in webmail, it will show on my Deleted Items folder in webmail and in Thunderbird on this computer.
So, it seems it has something to do with Thunderbird. Any thoughts or suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks for your help.

  • How do I move all the messages and folders in `Local Folder' to my main account folder? The stuff in local is from importing from Outlook

I imported my mail from Outlook and they went to Local Folders. I want them in the main folder section for my account. How do I move them there?
At the moment I have to create each folder and then copy the contents from one folder to the other - crazy, and I have dozens of folders

As Chgrist1 said, that is how it works. Having looked as how Outlook stores mail, and everything else. It is a wonder anything ever comes out that is useable. PST files are a mess. First thing they do is pull the email apart and store header, body and attachments is three different places.
You will also find (most likely) that your accounts in Outlook were POP and the default in Thunderbird is IMAP. merging IMAP and POP files and folders is fraught with difficulties and dangers. It would be a brave developer that tried that in an import.
In the case of IMAP all your mail is one the server, so import is not all that important. However copying a gigabyte or two of of outlook mail into your imap server could exhaust your available message storage space there and cause the import to fail completely.
So If you want to do what your saying, first confirm that your not using IMAP mail. Otherwise your experience is most likely going to be exceedingly poor.
If you are using POP mail, then changing the setting in your pop account to cause it to use the global inbox will make a single mail account appear, "Local Folder", with your outlook mail as a sub folder of that.
Dragging a folder from the imported outlook tree to Local folders is not difficult, as long as you remember that folders hang of other folders, so your dragging them to a parent, not a position on the screen you like.

  • IPhone and iPad iOS 5.1: Gmail IMAP attachments not downloading

I'm having an issue with Gmail (IMAP) not downloading attachments from myself! (I use Gmail to archive documents, etc). Same issue on my iPhone 4 and iPad 3, both iOS 5.1, using the default mail app with default "Gmail" account (IMAP) set up.
They *were* both working fine, then I erased both devices for a clean install. Set up the email accounts again, now none of my own attachments download on either device.
When I say not downloading, I see the attachment download box (dashed box with download arrow inside), and on pressing it, the attachment downloads (0 to XX kb), but then the download box just flashes back to showing the file size, and the attachments do not show. I keep pressing the download box but it flashes and nothing happens. Same with .jpg .png .doc .xls .pdf, etc.
    BEFORE THE FORMAT:
All attachments downloaded correctly (as far as I can remember) before I had erased both devices.
    NOW:
Attachments sent *from* me ([email protected]), via Gmail website, to me or anyone else, BEFORE formatting my iPad 3 and iPhone 4, do NOT download. However, if I then forward the email, including attachments, the attachments appear in the outgoing message preview! (so they're not corrupt)
Attachments sent *from* me ([email protected]), via Gmail website, to me or anyone else, AFTER formatting my iPad 3 and iPhone 4, DO download and correctly appear in the email.
Attachments sent *from* me ([email protected]), via iPhone/iPad, to me or anyone else, any time BEFORE or AFTER formatting my iPad 3 and iPhone 4, appear correctly.
Attachments sent from anyone else, *to* me ([email protected]), always appear correctly.
On a friend's iPhone 3G (iOS 4.2.1), adding my gmail account using the default "Gmail" setting (IMAP) works fine - all attachments download and show!
On a friend's iPhone 4 (iOS 5.1), adding my gmail account using the default "Gmail" setting (IMAP) replicates my problem - all attachments from me (sent before the format) do not download. (So it's not specific to my own devices!)
Gmail Exchange server (m.google.com) works fine: all attachements download and show correctly. Also no problem using Thunderbird IMAP or the Gmail web interface.
So it looks like it might be a problem with iOS 5.1, however it all seemed to be working fine before I did the erase/format... and new emails sent from me always appear correctly... actually that might explain why it was working before (as I was always downloading new emails, and not looking at archives).
So the only other thing that might have changed is some IMAP server setting? Could the headers or mail flags have changed somehow for older emails??
    Any thoughts? :-/

I reproduced this problem over the weekend, on friends' iPhones (all running iOS 5.1). Opening their Gmail sent folder and trying to view an attachment sent from a while back (basically one that hasn't already been cached by the Mail app) failed to display. Exactly the same problem - download arrow flashes and attachement won't show / can't be opened.
I'm in the UK, but not sure if that affects anything.
Thinking this might be a bug in the Mail app in iOS 5.1, as earlier versions work fine.

  • How to fix message not downloaded from server

    Hello everyone,
My name is Joshua Kahley, and I am an IT technician in charge of handeling email related issues in my company.  We host our own web and email server and since the I-OS 7 update we have had a problem where many messages cannot be retrieved from our email server.  I confirmed with my own phone that this issue did not exist prior to I-OS 7, messages that displayed fine before were no longer be readable on I-OS 7 when i upgraded.
The error message I recieve is "This message has not been downloaded from the server"
I'm not sure if this is a problem that can be solved on the phone itself as I have tried changing numerous settings.  Has anything changed with the way I-OS 7 handles IMAP messages that my require us to change settings on our server?  No other email provider has this issue as far as I can tell; in addition, all of our customers have the same issue (they all have their email through our servers)
If anyone has any insight into this I would greatly appriciate it.
    ~Joshua Kahley

No fix, but I found a work-around for a single message that iOS email refuses to download at http://www.bitcraft.com.au/iphone-mail-app-says-this-message-has-not-been-downlo aded-from-server/
    that reads:
...here’s a quick fix… Forward the message. Just click Forward and it will ask you “Download rest of message first?”. Say yes and then you will see the old message quoted in the forward. Now if only Apple would make than an option without having to ‘fake’ forward it…
The above worked for me when I encountered "This message has not been downloaded from server” on my iPad 3 running iOS 7.1.1.

  • Inaccurate "Message not downloaded from server" message

I recently started seeing error messages like the one below appearing in the body of my Mail messages right after reading new messages from the POP server at my work (a large hospital). I'm running OS 10.3.9 on a dual 2GHz PowerPC G5. None of the other Mac users in my group at work are getting this type of error message:
"The message from "Doe, John" <[email protected]> concerning “RE: New spheres” has not been downloaded from the server. You need to take this account online in order to download it."
I don't believe this has anything to do with our mail server at work. My account is "on-line" when I see this message, and taking it off-line and then on-line again does not correct the problem.
When I see it, this error message appears as the only text in many or all of the e-mails in my "InBox" -- and it replaces the actual text of each message -- even in messages that were previously downloaded and read successfully. I have never seen this message appear in any other mail folders -- I have only seen it in mail messages in my InBox.
This error message is clearly not accurate because when I see it in one or more emails, I can simply quit Mail and then re-start it and then I can see all of my In-Box mail messages correctly again, (without downloading anything again from the server).
I have tried deleting the mail preference file, and I have run the utility program Yasu to try to clean things up. Nothing has worked to fix this bug.
    Suggestions?
    Dual 2 GHz PowerPC G5   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

    This is not a bug.
All email clients have limits and the recommended mailbox size limit for Jaguar or Panther Mail is 1GB and for Tiger Mail, 2GB.
This error message indicates an "overstuffed" mailbox issue which means the account's inbox mailbox has either approached or exceeded 1GB in size or the mailbox has some corruption. An "overstuffed" mailbox issue can occur at any mailbox size but is more likely to occur depending on the number and size of message attachments contained in a mailbox and especially as a mailbox approaches or exceeds 1GB in size for Jaguar or Panther Mail.
This has been eliminated with Tiger Mail since the mbox format has been improved over previous Mail.app versions but there is still a recommended mailbox size limit (2GB) with Tiger Mail.
Quit the Mail.app first and using the Finder go to Home > Library > Mail > this POP account named folder (named by the user name and incoming mail server for the account) > INBOX.mbox.
Move the INBOX.mbox to the Desktop.
Launch Mail and a new INBOX.mbox will be created automatically by Mail within the account named folder.
This will allow the Mail.app to function properly again while working on the old INBOX.mbox moved to the Desktop to recover the existing messages.
Control-click on the old INBOX.mbox moved to the Desktop and at the menu window that appears, select Show Package Contents.
List the package content file names and size each here.
This information is required to determine the next step to take to recover the existing messages.
For future reference, since an account's Inbox mailbox is usually the most active mailbox and more prone to minor corruption over time, it is not a good idea to use an account's Inbox mailbox as the final storage location for all received messages not deleted.
Better to utilize user created "On My Mac" location mailboxes to sort received messages by category.
Before upgrading to Tiger Mail, I didn't allow any mailbox to exceed 500MB or so in size, used the Rebuild Mailbox function on the most active mailboxes on a regular basis (once a month or so depending on activity) and I never experienced an overstuffed mailbox issue.

  • Nokia PC Suite - Message not save in "Sent" folder...

If you are using "Nokia Communication Center" in "Nokia PC Suite" than observe while sending the message that it will not save in "sent" folder. can anybody help me out?

    Hi Antonio,
Saving the mesage means writing that e-mail in the senders "sent item" folder in the mailbox. Thus make sure that the users mail server name and user and password is correct for the system Exchange.
    Also check SAP Note 738965.
Also there is this this specific port that should be open on the SMTP server for the mail to be saved  in the "sent items" folder. I dont remember what port is it. Will try to figure out and let you know.
Also make sure that your Exchange transport has the sent items folder name.
    Akhilesh
Using telnet check that the SMTP server can be reached on port 25. If not then there is no way you can save the messages in the sent items folder using the collaboration tools.

I got this issue when I received MMS messages. They just showed up as "not downloaded" even when I set up automatic downloading. Is this what you are getting?
To force a manual download I found I had to press and hold the undownloaded message. A pop-up menu then eventually appears offering the option to download the message.

No, because the web browser or Adobe Downloader is downloading an installer.  You should download the installer to your Downloads folder or your Desktop.  Then either let the installer file proceed and install the software or launch the installer from where ever it resides after downloading.
