IMessage auto resending as SMS

I just updated both of my iPhone 4S (Sprint)  to iOS 5.1.1 and both of them started doing this very peculiar thing with iMessage
Sometimes iMessages just fail to send, its life, I understand that. However, ever since this last update iMessages have re-sent on their own as SMS. No action from me, I don't mind if it's here in the USA, but when it switches to SMS on my Australian friends, that's kinda annoying!
Send as SMS is turned off on both (never turned it on) they're brand new, and I have set them both up as new phones in iTunes and only loaded apps and my iCloud contacts/notes/calendar/mail.
Anyone else see this happen?

I think it's a bug in iOS when sending from external apps like Photos. Give it a few seconds before hitting Send, that seems to help.

  • Mail Server auto resending emails

We have a mail server running 10.8.5. We have run into the following issue, if someone sends out a mass email (multiple recipients or a group)... It starts to auto-resend that message. Every once in a while it will have a pattern of resending every 70minutes exactly. Other times it's chaotic on its resend and there is no pattern (like yesterday, it sent 3 times. First resend was 10min later and then 3hrs 03min later). We have restarted the mail server but that doesn't solve the issue. The only way we have found to solve the issue is to nuke the user from the mail server and recreate their account. Obviously, this is not the ideal solution so we were wondering if anyone out there has had this same issue and has a workaround or even a fix for it. Any help will be appreciated.

    Hi,
setting up mail can is quite complicated.

this should give you some ideas where to look.
Have in mind that you need to do DNS set-ups, need to have a static IP address ( or use a DynDNS service ),very likely also add MX records etc. etc.

Very strange, [email protected] Let's get this figured out. Make sure that SMS messages are turned on. Go to Settings>Messages>Send as SMS. Please let me know if this works.

  • Does imessage use the normal sms part of the iphone?

Does imessage use the normal sms part of the iphone? I am asking since when using imessage I get pictures properly displayed but on normal sms service my service provider sends me a text to say I have received a MMS log into their site to view which cannot be right?

No, iMessages are sent over the Internet via Apple's servers. It is nothing to do with your service providers SMS service.
Check with your service provider that MMS is configured correctly on your account.

  • IMessage just hijacked my SMS messages, I cannot open my SMS board without registering into iMessage - which I do not want.

iMessage just hijacked my SMS messages, I cannot open my SMS board without registering into IMessage - which I do not want to use. SMS message function is from my phone provider. Has anyone a solution to get around this? While trying to get out, I discontinued ICloud - did not help. This seems an example of very poor understanding that the users do NOT want everything monopolized by Apple.

You can't send or receive SMS text messages on your iPad, it isn't a phone and doesn't have a cellular voice channel. There are third party apps that permit SMS text messaging.

  • IPhone will get an iMessage, then reply as SMS, then iMessage again

Ever since I got an iPhone 6 with iOS 8 (and any version of iOS 8 released to date), I've had frustrating issues with the phone refusing to send things as an iMessage to other users that I KNOW have good service or are on WiFi.
I am sometimes in poor service areas, and that I understand.  My iPhone 4 sometimes had trouble sending iMessages from work, and it would fail, and I'd have to resend as a SMS.
However, even when I'm in an area with 5 bars of LTE or on a great WiFi connection at home...I still have trouble.  I can usually receive iMessages no problem in a good service area.  I can even get one as an iMessage, unlock the phone, and it will refuse to send as an iMessage - I either get "failed" or it just sends as a SMS straight away.  If I get the failed message, the phone doesn't even bother to attempt resending it when you hit "Try Again" like my iPhone 4 did.
I have tried resetting network settings multiple times, turning on/off iMessage, hard-resetting the phone, setting up the phone as a new phone, and de-registering/re-registering my iMessage account with the phone.  Curiously enough, my iPhone 4 on WiFi only still sends the message without a hitch EVERY TIME.
Is this just an iPhone 6/iOS 8 thing?

Oh...once it sends as a SMS, the next one will send as an iMessage with no problem at all.  I don't think I added that.

  • Imessage is working but sms is not

i bought an iphone today and my sms is not working. when i send a message it says 'not delivered' however my factime, imessage etc are all working. i can call but my number comes up as 'unknown'.
I have plugged my iphone into my computer and have synced all my songs etc and it is still not working.
is there anything i am not doing? ANY help will be appreciated.

Contact your carrier and make sure that your account is properly provisioned for SMS.

  • IMessages not converting to SMS messages when recipient not in wi-fi area / out of credit

I have an iPhone 5s (iOS 8.1.3) and my daughter and iPhone 4.  She often texts me without problem.  BUT if I try and reply and she is not in a Wi-Fi area or has run out of credit, the message (in blue) says that it has been delivered but she doesn't receive it.  The only way I can send a message to my daughter is to switch off iMessage and try again and send it as a SMS message - which is surely not how it's meant to be?  Other friends that are also iPhone users who are unaware of this problem so she doesn't get all her messages until back in a wi-fi area - which as a teenager is really annoying!
I do have the settings "Send as SMS" switched to on - so in theory my daughter should get a SMS as a minimum?
I have reset my phone and the network data but nothing has changed.  My daughter is quite fed up on missing out on her messages.
    Any ideas?

Solution found. It was simply that the Cellular data was switched off on my daughters phone.

  • IMessage immediately sent as SMS message

    Hi everyone
I was iMessaging with someone (both have iPhone 6) for a few days, then, one day, I sent them a message. (I did not have the SMS settings turned on). This is what happened:
The iMessage appeared to send as blue, but immediately appeared as undeliverable with the ( ! ), THEN immediately sent as a green Text message. (rather than idling in blue and me manually having to "Send as Text Message", it did all this automatically)
Now, every time I try to message them, my messages can only be sent as SMS messages (the Send button lights up green instead of blue).
I am able to iMessage with my other contacts. Is there a problem on the recipients end for this? I have not heard from them since this incident. Could their phone be dead/unavailable/setting turned off?
    Please help!

Why would someone turn off iMessage?
And would they still receive the SMS text sent in lieu of the iMessage?

  • "fast auto typing" for sms & emails

    Hi,
My other half has a Lumia 800 and I notice that there is this "auto word type" facility where when you type the first few letters, the word automatically forms and/or you get a choice of several that are similar.
I see that this is for sms-ing - not sure for emails.
Is this availible for the new range of Lumias (620, etc)? And if so, how do you set it up?
    Many thanks !
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

Yes it is and it should be there by default, so no setting up is necessary, well at least not in my case anyway.

  • IMessage automatically sends as SMS even if turned off in the Settings. Is this a bug for ios 6.0.1?

I know there's still bugs for iMessage and so when I'm not on wifi but the iMessage is turned on, I don't wait for the iMessage to fail sending. I press and hold the message to send it as text message instead immediately. Then the recepient tells me that they receive my text messages twice. So what I did today, I sent an iMessage without being connected to wifi and let it attempt to send and let it fail. To my surprise, after failing as iMessage, it automatically sent as an SMS when I had that setting turned off. Do I make sense? Do you guys also experience the same problem?

When imessage is unavailable it sends it as SMS - that is normal see link http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3529
