Imessage broken by mavericks

I use iChat (now iMessage) as an integral part of my work day, and since I have installed Maverics, I have found a number of features missing.  Is this just me, or did Apple pull a "we know best" and remove critical features?   Firstly, on audio chat, there is no longer a mute button.  Really ?    Secondly, I no longer get audio notification of an incoming IM unless the chat dialog window is on top. I poked around in the notification center, but those controls don't seem to work either.  Also, I can no longer find a setting for making the doc icon bounce.   In fact, there is a whole tab missing on the preferences page for configuring alerts.   Wow !  How dissappointing is that !
Another REALLY ANNOYING new "feature" is that the "typing" bubble that lets you know when the other guy is typing now times out.  If the "other guy" types for longer than say a minute, his typing bubble dissappears, giving the impression he is no longer typing.   This makes expressing complicated thoughts via chat annoying because you can't tell if the other guy as edited himself, or if he's long winded.   Patience and politeness dictates waiting for the other guy to finish.  Can't do that anymore.  Is chat/texting now just for butchered short phrases like "U R late"  ?
Anyone out there know of how to get around poorly concieved changes to a once slick tool ?

Hi,
You obviously have not missed iChat Theatre yet    .
Yes broadly speaking the Alerts pane in the Preferences has gone.
The only thing you can change the Sound for is the Messages Received item in the General section of the Preferences but this only allows System Sounds or sounds in your ~/Library/Sound folder (other than the Messages Received sound itself)
You cannot switch to other iChat/Messages sounds.
All the other sounds are still there and play whether you want them to or not.
The settings in the Notifications seem to have little impact on whether the sound is heard or not.
There is also a bit of an oddity about where this info is stored.
It used to be in com.apple.ichat.plist
In fact if you have Xcode you can read this and see the individual ones you may have set up are still there along with other sound changes you may have made.
However Messages plays the ones stored in com.apple.soagent.plist which is in ~/Library/Containers/com.apple.soagent/Data/Library/Preferences
I also find that the first messages is always missed sound wise.
It seems to play better if it is the "front" app but will actually play the sounds if you then moved it to the background.
I have not found any workarounds fro this yet.

  • IMessages Broken

I've been having issues with iMessages for a while.
Though it's suppposed to allow a combined login for all my devices, there has been a distinct seperation on my Mac between my phone number and my iCloud email address...
In short though my phone shows both my email and my phone #, the exact same account on my Mac under iMessages shows only my email...
I tried to re-log into the iMessages account on my Mac, and now it's pretty much broken...
It's fully signed out (saying inactive under Accounts).  When I type in my login & password a spinning indicator comes up for around 30 seconds, only to finally indicate "Could not sign in.  Please check your network connection and try again."
Though it was signed in (sans my phone number) a couple minutes ago, I now get this every time.  As best I can tell, nothing has happened to my network between now and then, and all other services on the network (including my phone via WiFi) work as normal...
In essence, my iMessages account under Mavericks has been semi-broken for a while, and now it's fully broken...  I have no idea what else to try...
For the record, these items did NOT help in my case:  http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3970

Try deleting your account in Sytem Preferences/Internet Accounts and then add it back again.
If that resolves the problem, Messages/Preferences/Accounts and add your telephone number.

  • PDF copy to clipboard is broken in Mavericks 10.9.5

PDF copy is broken in Mavericks 10.9.5 on my MacBook Pro 17 (mid 2009). I cannot screen capture to the clipboard (ctrl-shift-cmnd-4) or between applications when the copy format is PDF. I can, however, save as a pdf file during screen capture (shoft-cmnd-4). Other formats (pict, jpeg etc) work fine. Only pdf is broken. The error shows up as an empty clipboard and as Preview being unable to create a new file from the clipboard. Have reinstalled OSX 10.9.5 (combo update). Have created a new user and logged in as the new user (no menu bar extensions,  etc) and the problem persists. Have booted up in safe mode and the problem persists.
Is this a combination of an old MacBook Pro (17 inch, mid 2009) and Mavericks or have others experienced this problem with different configurations?

  • AutoFS/automountd broken in Mavericks?

Priot to upgradignto Mavericks (I was on Mountain Lion) I had AutoFS setup to mount two AFP volumes under /Volumes. Post upgrade this no longer works and in fact I cannot get any aspect of AutoFS/automountd to work.  Is this just me or is this completely broken in Mavericks?

How do you have AutoFS set up, exactly? Have you specified auto mounts in directory utility under Mounts, or did you edit /etc/auto_master? Either way, it would appear that Mavericks no longer allows you to specify auto mounts that mount underneath /Volumes. Here is a relevant discussion:
    https://discussions.apple.com/message/23537689
    Two solutions.
    1. Specify a local mount point that consists of any path not underneath /Volumes. Example: /nas.
    2. Mount the volume through the finder, and once it shows up on your desktop, open up System Preferences -> Users & Groups -> Self -> Login Items, and drag and drop the resulting mounted volume icon in there. It will re-mount on login.

  • Contacts Applescript dictionary broken in Mavericks?

So this script works fine in Mountain Lion, but is broken in Mavericks.  Apperntly, Applescript no longer knows the class "person" anymore, even though it's still listed in the Contacts dictionary.
    tell application "Contacts"
repeat with theName in every person
set theName2 to the name of theName as string
    display dialog theName2
              end repeat
    end tell
When I open this script under Mavericks, the person class has been replaced by  «class azf4»
When I try to replace that with "person" again and compile, I get "Expected class name but found identifier".
Running 10.9.2.  Anyone else see this?????

This question came up in this thread. The solution is to rebuild the launch services database. Run the following command in terminal:
/System/Library/Frameworks/CoreServices.framework/Frameworks/LaunchServices.fram ework/Support/lsregister -kill -r -domain local -domain system -domain user
then quit and relaunch the Finder.

  • Korean language broken in Mavericks mail

    Hi there!
I used both English and Korean language.
Sometimes, mail contents in Korean are broken when I receive email from Korean friends.
I tried to view message in raw source....no improvement.
Someone suggested text encoding...but I do not know how to change text encoding in Mavericks.
    Jay

What does it say in the "charset=" header
    charset="iso-8859-1"
    But another mail has nothing there, only "Content-Type: text/html";
The important thing is not whether this charset is correct or not. The important thing is that Apple has made my mail experience worse by this "upgrade", for no good reason!
Earlier, I could change encoding of mails (perhaps a badly encoded mail), but Apple has taken away that posibility for no good reason. It only affects old mails, before UTF became common. It is typical of Apple not to care about history, but for me, old mails constitute valuable history.
Rather than taking away an option to change the encoding (or interpretation of an encoding) of a mail, I think Apple should have enhanced the feature: Sometimes, it happens that only the subject line is erronously interpretated (mime endoding of non-us-ascii characters), and I would like to fix that. It has never been possible. (This problem can even happen today with some new mails auto-generated by machines, such as auto-replies.)

  • Help with a ridiculous half-broken Yosemite/Mavericks install?

    Hello all,
I hate Yosemite. It's the Windows 8 of OS X...with broken DNS to boot.
I was troubleshooting some video issues, and decided to try and see if the problem persisted in Yosemite.
I downloaded the installer from the App Store and begun the install process for an installation on a flash drive.
After the install completed, my iMac rebooted, and to my horror everything was Yosemite-y. I shut down and unplugged the flash drive.
My suspicions were true, Yosemite had gunked up my Mavericks installation pretty bad. The boot logo was Yosemite, and my mac booted to a Yosemite installer at startup. I tried using the "kind of mac bootloader" that is invoked with the option-key, but my Mavericks install didn't show up. Luckily my Mavericks Recovery Partition was bootable, and after 2 hours of trying different ways to find and mount my Mavericks partition, I was in. The reason that this took so long was because at every step of the way, Yosemite tried its hardest to hide my Mavericks partition. (A process resembling the acts of Malware). My Mavericks partition boots, but when I startup my mac, I am greeted with the Yosemite apple logo, and Yosemite option-key bootloader, and then my Mavericks login screen.
How did this Frankenstein of an OS even become of existence? I checked, and yes, Yosemite installed onto my flash drive, NOT my SSD, but it still shoved all the boot crap onto my Mavericks install.
Is this even fixable, or should I restore from Time Machine? I'd rather not have to reinstall, but will if needed.

Do a backup, preferably 2 seperate ones.
Revert to a Previous OS X
    Revert Yosemite to Mavericks
If you do revert, I'd use Setup Assistant to restore your data. This process takes a while, so do it when you won't need the computer for several hours, based on my experience.

  • Push notification iMessage after X Mavericks update

hi everybody! I've just updated my macbook air (2012) to X Mavericks and suddenly I can't receive push notification in iMessage application anymore. How can I fix the problem?

Just a suggestion, because this was how I ended up fixing mine:
You need to go to Spotlight > Activity Monitor > Search "Notification" > Press Quit
It reboots the notificaton center. If you want it, there's also a youtube video that's only 19 seconds that shows it: http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=UeXx42iGUs4

  • IMessage slow in mavericks

iMessage has improved in Mavericks, meaning that atleast now the messages are in order.  But, when I receive an iMessage on my iPhone, it takes about ten minutes for it to show up on my Macbook Pro.  I believe I have everything set up properly on my devices.  Anyone else having this issue?  Please advise.  Thanks.

    Hi,
The Push process to send iMessages to iPhone and iPads in iOS is different to the process that the Mac Version seems to use.
For some reason this can delay what appears to be the "sync" version.
i.e. if you iMessage direct to the Mac ID from the iPhone the iMessage appears to be instant.
Same if you iMessage to the iPhone Number from the Mac version.
It can be the syncing to the Mac of Messages first picked up by an iOS Device that then appears to be slow.
There does not appear to be any way of speeding it up.
To be clear it is more about a sync version than it is about a Direct iMessages.

  • Java broken on Mavericks

Followed the various bits of advice - latest Java installed.
Java is not working - period - in any browser.
Yet another update that has broken what was working.
    Absolutely stuck.
    Any suggestions, anyone, please?
    Cheers,
    Mike

Hi thanks for that - yep, I realise Mavericks is sans java.  I had installed the java as recommended on these forums.
Actually,  I had tried installing the latest incarnation from the java site.
Restarting the machine and checking gave me:
    Verified Java Version
    Congratulations!
You have the recommended Java installed (Version 7 Update 45).
This is before your kind response.
And, after trying to get java too work for a good few days - it now does.
    Thanks, anyway.

  • Can't sign into iMessage..after Mavericks upgrade

I have upgraded to Mavericks and I am trying to open iMesage but this login gif image constantly rolling .
I cant log into it..is there any remedy available..

After a lot of exploring I finally found the problem with my case.
I have my  logic board replaced by the apple service centre couple of years back. Which caused the vanishing of my serial number. I dont know what made it vanish. But u see this was the case.
Now why I am talking about the serial key has reason behind it. To use iMessage and Facetime apps we got to have serial number in our firmware. Otherwise it keeps showing me some connection errors while setting up the iMessage.
The legitimate and safe way to enroll your serial number back to your machine is to go to Apple store and tell them the issue. And they will do the needful. We can get the serial key from the surface of the product, product invoice or the packaging box.
I have not tried that after enrolling my serial key back to the machine, my iMessge and Facetime will start working. But its worth a try because missing serial key is a serious issuue. And it may cause some apps to work in a way which you dont anticipate it to.
So if you also suffer from the same problem, dont forget to check your serial key. And in case it is affirmative then do visit the Apple Store and resolve the issue. Although i hope Apple should release an update for those suffering with missing serial key and fix the issue. But untill then we have to find our nearest Apple Store.

  • IMessage Login Issues Mavericks

Hello, I recently did some automatic updates on my Macbook Pro. I'm running Mavericks. All of sudden yesterday, I couldnt send iMessages from my Mac anymore. My iPhone is fine. I get these screens when I try logging in. I can't change my chat status or anything, and I can't even log in or out of my Apple ID. Please help!

    Hi,
What sort of Apple ID are you using to do this ?
Apple IDs can be emails from external ISPs
They can be older names from the .Mac service ending in @mac.com
They could be @me.com ending names from MobileMe (that replaced .Mac)
They could @me.com name from iCloud that are replacing MobileMe
I have seen issues where people have used an older MobileMe name to create a iCloud Account (of the same name).
Part of this process means ending the MobileMe account which for the AIM server seems to close the account.
Any external email needs to be verified (more recent addition to the security side of things)
Use the Apple ID Support pages to Login with Manage Account and make sure the Primary Email is verified.
If your Apple ID is from the time when any random name could be used (not necessarily an email) then you may need to add an email and verify that.

  • Apple's DVI to Video adapter broken in Mavericks

    Good Day,
I've been monitoring this community forum as a guest only, because IMHO registering with anything over the Internet is equivalent to giving up a piece of your soul, but I could not find anything that would help my unique situation since upgrading to Mavericks. So here I am, and here is my situation.
I own a late 2007 15" Macbook Pro running 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo. It's a Vintage brand. The last known OS X I had on it was Lion, and it worked beautifully when I could output my video display using the DVI to composite/S-video adapter hooked up to an analog "tube" TV. I could watch DVDs, YouTube vids in expanded mode, I even figured out how to watch iTunes movies on the TV... at the sacrifice of my computer use. Basically, I needed Mavericks' independent display feature.
    But I couldn't have it.
After downloading Mavericks overnight and installing it the next day, My computer would not boot up. It stuck at the Apple logo screen with the loading gear continuously rotating upon itself until it became opaque (too involved too explain). After having service done, I isolated the problem to the adapter. Not only could it not boot up when plugged in, but it also didn't display when plugged in while powered up unless you hit the Mirror Display key. Further experimentations involved using DVI to DVI cables, DVI to VGA cables, and they worked fine.
I will not upgrade to a new HDTV or a new Macbook because everything I have still works, and I can't afford a new setup because jobless. At this point, I don't know what to do. Does Mavericks just plain not want to recognize my DVI port? Is there another way to hook this old laptop to an old TV with the equipment I already have?

Well, my proposed workaround, involving two adapters, does work, and indeed works quite well.
    1. Apple's DVI to VGA adapter, plugged into the Mac on one side, and on the other side:
    2. Male to male VGA gender changer, which plugs into:
    3. VideoSecu PC to TV converter with both S-video and composite video outputs, QVGA2TV 1L7, which costs about $20 on Amazon.
I use the S-video output, which in fact goes to an S-video balun, and from there via a Cat5 cable to another balun upstairs where my TV is. (I have a separate balun for digital audio into my DAC upstairs.) After some tweaking of the VideoSecu, I got a picture that is noticeably better than the one I got with the Mac DVI-to-Video adapter which I had been using before upgrading to Mountain Lion.
So, yes, the additional adapter adds to desk clutter, but heck, since Apple has never fixed this problem with Mountain Lion, it might never get around to fixing it with Mavericks, so this solves the problem here and now.

  • How do I add a buddy to my iMessages list in mavericks

    Hi All,
I have my daughter as a buddy in imessages, the only buddy in my list.
I want to add other people but cannot figure out how.
I have tried the apple help page, which tells me to select 'add a buddy' in the buddy list. No such option exists!
I cannot end the chat with my Daughter either, the 'end chat' option is greyed out. As a result I cannot start a new message session!
    All very confusing.
