IMessage contact address problems

I am a little perplexed about how to set up iMessage correctly.
I have iMessage activated.  My settings are that "I can be reached by iMessage" at my phone number and email.  I "Start new conversations from" my email.
The first problem I have is when I talk to my girlfriend (she has an iPhone).  I frequently have two different iMessage threads with her and it is very frustrating.  In one thread, if I click on her Contact info it highlights her phone number.  The other thread, it highlights her email.  Its annoying to not keep everything in one unified thread.  Is there anyway to do this? Is the problem on her end or my end?
Keeping the above problem in mind, I would also like to unify my iMessage with my iPad messaging.  I get this to work sporatically, but I would like it if I could consistently see all my iMessage conversations in my iPad as if I were looking at my iPhone.  My girlfriend also has an iPad (although she hasn't been using it for messaging) so I would like to be able to set up the same for her.
I just don't understand the need for separating iMessages into two threads depending on the address.  It would seem to be easier for everyone if you just kept it unified based on the name.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi, did you ever fix this problem? I'm having the same issue.

  • Map of Contact address problem

Tapping on an address in my Contacts takes me to Maps, but then gives me a "no search results found" message because it has added "United States" to the end of the address in the search box. (I'm in the UK). If I then delete this and tap Search it works fine and I get a map of the address.
Does anyone know how I can stop the iPhone assuming all my addresses are in the US? I have United Kingdom set as Region Format in International settings.
    Thanks.

    NickRich,
Which iPhone firmware are you running?
You can check by going to Settings -> General -> About.
    Thank you,

  • I have one apple ID for multiple devices in my family.  I'd like to keep it that way for itunes/app purchases.  I would like a simple step 1, step 2, step 3 response on what I need to do to separate all other features like imessage, contacts, emails, etc.

I have one apple ID for multiple devices in my family.  I'd like to keep it that way for itunes/app purchases.  I would like a simple step 1, step 2, step 3 response on what I need to do to separate all other features like imessage, contacts, emails, etc.
I have been reasearching how to do this on the internet, but I haven't found an easy explanation yet.  My family is going crazy over each others imessages being sent to others in the family and not being able to use FaceTime because of conflicting email addresses.  I have read that if each person gets their own iCloud account, this would work.  However, I need to know what to do after I set everyone up with their own iCloud account.  Do I make that the default email address to be contacted or can they still use their hotmail email addresses.  Any help- with easy explanation- would be much appreciated!!

We do this in my family now.  We have one account for purchases, so it is used to share music and apps (I think that is in Settings/iTunes & App Stores).  Each iDevice has this configured.
Then, each of us has our own iCloud account that is configured under Settings/iCloud.  That then allows us to have our own Mail/Contacts/Calendars/Reminders/Safari Bookmarks/Notes/Passbook/Photo Stream/Documents & Data/Find My iPhone/and Backup.  That Backup piece is pretty sweet and comes in handly if you replace your iDevice.  You can just restore from it.
So we all share the Apple Store account but we all have our own iCloud accounts to keep the rest seperate or things like you mentioned are a nightmare.
In answer to what iCloud does for you: http://www.apple.com/icloud/features/
Think of it as an internet based ("cloud") area for all of those items listed in my response.  What you need to remember is photo stream only maintans the last 1000 pictures so don't count it as a complete backup solution for your pictures.  Even though I rarely sync with a computer these days, I do still try to sync my phone with iPhoto (I have an iMac) so that I have copies of all of my pictures.  1000 may not stretch as far as it sounds.

  • (GPS) coordinates in Contacts interoperability problem with Maps

I have noticed that using lat/long coordinates works fine in Maps to search for addresses with nameless streets. The address can also be added to a contact. When trying to locate an address from Contacts a problem is that Contacts always add the country to the coordinates and Maps doesn't like that.
If I search for "59.871859,17.527034" in Maps, it takes me to a nameless road in Uppsala, Sweden. I can then add that address to a contact, and the address becomes "+59°52'18.69", +17°31'37.32". When I later press this address in Contacts it appends a seemingly random country to the address, so in my case the address becomes "+59°52'18.69", +17°31'37.32 United States", which Maps doesn't like. If I manually delete the country part in Maps and search again it works fine. The strange thing is that if I edit the address the country is set to Sweden.
Is there a way to have Contacts not add the country to the address it feeds to Maps?
I'm using 1.1.3 firmware in my 16G touch btw.

I forgot to mention that when I choose a destination it keeps saying Calculating route all the time. I waited about 15 minutesand it didn't calculate anything.

  • Gmail contact addresses not syncing properly in iOS 4

Since updating my 3GS to iOS 4, I've noticed a change in the way contact addresses are entered: there is a separate field for each individual address component. The problem is that all my contact addresses are now populating the fields incorrectly. The street address line goes into the street address field okay, but then the city, state and zip all get put into the "city" field. If a contact has an address with two "street" lines, then the first goes into a "street" field correctly, but then the second "street" line goes into the "city" field, and the city, state and zip all go into the "state" field.
I use Google Sync to sync up my contacts with my Gmail account, and since address entries in Gmail are free-form, I wonder if this might be an issue with Apple parsing the address data incorrectly. It seems it's just spitting up the data into the fields using line breaks (which is quite clumsy, IMHO).
    _Address in Gmail:_
    12345 Sesame Street
    New York, NY 10022
_Shows up in iPhone contacts as:_
    Street: 12345 Sesame Street
    City: New York, NY 10022
    State:
    Zip:
If I fix the address so each component is in the correct field on my iPhone, each address component displays on a separate line in Gmail, which looks ridiculous.
    Example:
    12345 Sesame Street
    New York
    NY
    10022
Has anyone else experienced this issue with iOS 4? Is this an Apple bug or a Gmail bug?

Have any body lost their contact address book in macbook pro

  • Long wait time in settings/general/iMessage/contacts/camera

I Have around a 8 second long respond time when trying to access the settings and in general iMessage contacts and camera on my iPhone 4s. I'm on the latest os. It all started happening when my wifi and Bluetooth stopped working Last year.

If you're WiFi and BT buttons are greyed out, you have a hardware problem. I've never heard of that particular hardware problem causing the symptoms you're seeing now. However, if you also updated to iOS 7 around the same time, I'd expect that you'd see a slight drop in performance, though generally not quite as much as you describe.
What troubleshooting steps have you already taken? Have you tried resetting your device by pressing and holding the Home button and power button until the silver apple appears? Go to Settings>General>Usage and check to see that you have a reasonable amount of available space. Make sure you don't have a huge number of photos. Restore the phone as new (after syncing your data).

  • Simplest way to transfer Contacts/Addresses to the Curve using iMac / Palm Desktop ?

I have a new 8300 Curve and approximately 1500 Contacts/Addresses in my iMac on Palm Desktop ( they are also in Palm handheld).
I am able to export these Contacts/Addresses to my iMac desktop in various formats: excel workbook, .csv Comma Delimited , .txt Text Delimited, vcard.
My computer is an intel iMac with OS X version 10.4.11.
What is the best/simplest way to transfer those Contacts/Addresses to the Curve?
    Thanks
    Dan

    Hi,
OMG! I know how it feels when we got our all contacts in a tabular formatted file which is created in excel, CSV formatted file and unfortuntealy all the blackberry phones arre abel to rectify only vCard formatted file. This is the reason when i was facing the same problem than at that point of time i find out a simple and free download software which can convert contacts from excel to vCard file format. here is the complete step by step instructions http://www.exceltovcard.onlinetechaid.com/ and you can download it free.  after converting contacts you just have to follow a simple set of instructions which i am going to mention it below and you are able to use all these contacts in your curve or also in another Blackberry phone. so the instructions are :
    (i) Copy all the contacts in your Memory Card.
(ii)  Now open your file manager
    (iii) select memory card
(iv) open the location where you save all the contacts in vCard formatted file
    (v) Now click on options in your blackberry phone select "Select All"
(vi) After that click on addd to contacts.
Just try these simple way and you are able to use all your contacts in your Blackberry phone and make your life simple.

  • How to delete a contact from contacts/address book?

I have a contact I want to erase from my desktop Mac contacts/address book in OS X Mavericks but I cannot figure out how.  I see no delete button.  This contact is not on my iPhone (with iOS 7) and it's not shown at all if i log into icloud.com and check out my address book.  It's messing up all my programs dependent on the contacts/address book.
    THanks.

Looks like I have more problems than just that.  There are TWO icloud accounts showing in contacts preferences even though I only have ONE.  I cannot remove one of them.  It says I should remove it from internet accounts.  Internet accounts only has ONE icloud account.
Is Apple's software going down the tubes along with the hardware now?

I am trying to verify my email contact address with Apple. In the confirmation email I received, the link to verify is not active. This has been going on for over 2 weeks. They keep sending emails where I can't click on "VERIFY Now".

In case anyone else has this problem, it turns out that my email provider's software was stripping the link out before it got to my mailbox.

  • How to sync Google Apps contacts from ALL groups to Mac OS X Contacts/Address Book

I have some 4,000 contacts in my Google Apps account.  I used to store all of them in Google's "My Contacts" category, but my iOS devices had huge performance issues searching through 4,000 contacts as I typed a name or phone number on the device.  So I trimmed it down and only keep the 200 or so most often used contacts in the "My Contacts" folder.  This works because iOS devices are only able to sync that one category of contacts.
However, I now want to sync my Google Apps contacts with Mac OS X Contacts/Address Book.  I'd like it to sync ALL of the contacts, not just those 200 in "My Contacts".
Is this possible?  I'm using Mountain Lion and Google Apps Premier.
I used to be able to achieve this using SpanningSync.  But as of a couple weeks ago, SpanningSync has been permanently discontinued due to architectural changes with the sync engine in Mac OS X.  I'm not aware of any other contacts synching tools that could do it.
I know that Address Book/Contacts won't be able to show my Google Apps categories--just a single long list of everyone.  That's totally fine by me, as long as I can get all contacts in the Mac OS X application and only the My Contacts group on my iPhone and iPad.
Any and all guidance would be VERY much appreciated.

Unfortunately no, not at all.  I've tried these boards which were obviously fruitless on this question.  I've tried the Genius Bar.  And I've tried other technical resources.  I do not believe it's possible at this point.
"Little stuff" like this....  it's seemingly relatively trivial in the grand scheme of things, but can be real productivity killers when I have to go back and forth between Apple's Contacts software and the actual Google Apps/Gmail web UI.  It's these little things that create quirks between Google Apps and Mac OS that almost make me want to return to Exchange.  It's much more expensive and other than Outlook and Calendar/Mail/Contacts, there's no virtually no interoperability options on the Mac.  But at least it's consistent and I know what will work and what won't.
On the other hand, I could also solve this problem by simply putting ALL of my contacts in my Google Apps account into the "My Contacts" folder.  But that kinda defeats the purpose of having a "My Contacts" folder.
Sorry Steven--I wish I had a better update or a resource to point you to, but I'm at the end of the road on this one.

  • HT5538 Is there anyway I can use just my phone number as my iMessage contact, I can't even select it with my email as it is greyed out

I Have an iPhone 5S and I'm just wanting to use my phone number as my iMessage contact. It only comes up with my email and everyone I iMessage say it only comes up with my email that is enabled and I want to just use my number to have the contact still saved. When I go to enable my number it is 'greyed out'

    Hi Aylamcguire,
Welcome to the Apple Support Communities!
Make sure “Start New Conversations From” is set to your phone number. If it already is and/or messages continue to be sent with email address, it may be necessary to delete the message thread you already have going and start a new thread after your phone number is selected as the way to start a new message.
    iOS: Troubleshooting Messages
Select your phone number when Sending iMessages in Settings > Messages > Send & Receive > Start New Conversations From.
    Have a great day,

  • IMessage Text Messaging Problem

A few months ago my sister decided to change phones from an iPhone to another phone, she called Apple Support to remove iMessage registration which she did successfully.  The thing is iMessage on my Mac Mini and on my Macbook Pro still shows her number as registered to iMessage.  In the drop down, it shows her email address which is registered to iMessage since she has a Macbook Pro, and her phone number which on rare occasion, it actually shows "123-456-7890 Text Message" next to it...But mostly it still says "123-456-7890 iMessage".  I do have an iPhone 6+ and Text Message Forwarding on.
Like when it works, and I am texting her on the MacMini and I would need to restart the mac for w/e reason, when I try to text her again it will for some reason switch to iMessage and then I get an undeliverable message.
I then completely reset iMessage by deleting all the plists relative to iMessage and all the history for her and I deleted her contact info and my messages on both my macs and my iPhone.
Is there anything I am missing? This is extremely frustrating. Does anyone have any ideas?

    Hi,
Even before Yosemite and iOS 8 and the Text Forwarding function  Messages has always shown any number as a potential iMessages contact.
It shows my land line as and iMessages contact but without the Blue "previous contact" indicator.
I do not have any other numbers to check the "number Text Message"  indicator with at the moment.
I have seen several other threads where SMS started on the iPhone and then continued on the Mac works but trying to Start one on the Mac does not.
There is now no setting in the File Menu to start a specific type of Chat.
Deleting all the .plists for the Messages app is now extensive as it involves all the ones with iChat in the titles and some with iMessages in the tiles plus several that don't.
It also involves some in the ~/Library/Containers/com.apple.iChat sub folders and some in the com.apple.soagent folder as well.
    Some will achieve nothing.
    com.apple.iChat.SubNet.plist refers only to Bonjour
com.apple.iChat.StatusMessages.plist only holds the Saved Status messages in Buddy Lists and is actually nothing to do with iMessages
com.apple.iChat.LSSharedFileList.plist only stores the Recent Chats list  which the Messages app In Yosemite does not display.
com.apple.ids.service.com.apple.madrid.plist is the one that holds the Apple ID and the iPhone Numbers and any other aliases you have linked to your account.
As you can see it does not mention iChat or iMessages. It holds nothing about how it connects to specific contacts.
The com.apple.ids.service.com.apple.ess.plist seems to contain the same info (but always has an older Modified date and never "today" to say it is in use.
com.apple.imessage.bag.plist only lists the Server you are connected to for iMessages.
Most likely it is going to be one of these
These are some of the ones relating to the SOAgent support app.
As you can see by the Path Bar across the bottom these are deep in the Containers folder which is used by the Sandbox protection process.
Some of the .plist items are Aliases to the originals in ~/Library/Preferences but the ones highlighted are actual .plists.
A quick look at them in Xcode does not reveal anything.
com.apple.messageshelper.AccountInfoController.plist looks promising but might only be linked to Buddy Lists rather than the iMessages account.
I don't think you are missing any Setting in Messages app or the iMessages account itself (or menu items that only refer to that part of the app.).
However with a lack of testing here on this side I also have no suggestions.

  • HT4865 So who believes Apple should be a bit more cautionary about the sharing of iMessages and other content when several members of a family share the same iCloud account and unknowing can audit each other's iMessages, Contacts, and god only knows what

I think Apple should be a bit more cautionary about iCloud and privacy.  My family shares the same iCloud account as we all enjoy the music we collectively purchase on iTunes; we paid Apple for this feature with some kind of grouped account.  We didn't know, however that this joins our devices so that iMessages, contacts, pictures and just about everything else is shared too.  The unprivate default seems to be to share everything between all devices vs. to allow access by exception or by choice (or by password?).  Sure, when my kids get all my texts I can go figure out why and fix it but that is in my mind the antithesis of privacy and could be quite embarrassing for any family.  I guess it is good for stalking the kids or parents though if they don't know about the partyline approach to privacy.  Maybe a tech solution would be to have the iPhone show somehow the extent of its audience to its user.

No argument from me about the vagaries of using and sharing Apple IDs.  This can lead to unintended consequences, especially in a family situation.
If you're sharing the same ID for FaceTime, you might want to go to Settings>FaceTime, tap the ID, sign out, then sign in with separate IDs there too.  Otherwise, you'll end up getting each other's FaceTime calls.
Also, if you need to migrate everyone's devices to separate iCloud accounts to keep your synced data separated, you can do this by saving any photo stream photos you wish to keep to your camera roll (unless already there) by opening your my photo stream album, tapping Select, tapping the photos, tap the share icon (box with upward facing arrow), then tapping Save to Camera Roll.  If you are syncing notes with iCloud, you'll need to open each of your notes and email them to yourself so you can later copy and paste the text into new notes created in your new account.  Then go to Settings>iCloud, tap Delete Account (which only deletes it from this device, not from iCloud), choose Keep on My iDevice and provide the password to turn off Find My iPhone.  Then sign back in with a different Apple ID to create your new account and choose Merge to upload your data.  Once everyone's devices are on separate accounts, you can go to icloud.com and delete each other's data from your accounts.
