Imessage crashed and frozen everything on imac...
Happen today when I open imessage on my imac and it crashed then frozen everything...I have to turn off the power by pressing the button behind the imac...please help. Thanks
Try a restart.
Do a backup, using either Time Machine or a cloning program, to ensure files/data can be recovered. Two backups are better than one.
Try setting up another admin user account to see if the same problem continues. If Back-to-My Mac is selected in System Preferences, the Guest account will not work. The intent is to see if it is specific to one account or a system wide problem. This account can be deleted later.
Isolating an issue by using another user account
Try booting into the Safe Mode using your normal account. Disconnect all peripherals except those needed for the test. Shut down the computer and then power it back up after waiting 10 seconds. Immediately after hearing the startup chime, hold down the shift key and continue to hold it until the gray Apple icon and a progress bar appear and again when you log in. The boot up is significantly slower than normal. This will reset some caches, forces a directory check, and disables all startup and login items, among other things. When you reboot normally, the initial reboot may be slower than normal. If the system operates normally, there may be 3rd party applications which are causing a problem. Try deleting/disabling the third party applications after a restart by using the application un-installer. For each disable/delete, you will need to restart if you don’t do them all at once.

Imported photos, deleted originals, then iphoto crashed and lost everything
I imported photos from my iphone, deleted the originals (i never do this, but figured, it's a new year so i should start cleaning up my phone!), and then iphoto crashed and now the photos i imported are nowhere to be found! help!
Welcome to the Apple Discussions. There's still a good chance that the photos are in the library but just not being recognized by iPhoto. Backup the library and try the three fixes below in order as needed:
Fix #1
Delete the iPhoto preference file, com.apple.iPhoto.plist, that resides in your User/Library/Preferences folder.
NOTE: If you're moved your library from its default location in your Home/Pictures folder you will have to point iPhoto to its new location when you next open iPhoto by holding the the Option key. You'll also have to reset the iPhoto's various preferences.
Fix #2
Launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys depressed and follow the instructions to rebuild the library. Select last three options.

Rebuild the library using iPhoto Library Manager as follows:

1 -Download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
2 -Click on the Add Library button, navigate to your User/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
3 - Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File->Rebuild Library menu option
4 - In the next window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
5 - Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments but not books, calendars or slideshows. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.

TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier versions) database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
NOTE: this is not the same as routinely backing up your entire iPhoto library folder to protect your photos. It only protects the loss of your organizational efforts that the database file contains.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger or later), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. There are versions that are compatible with iPhoto 5, 6, 7 and 8 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. Just put the application in the Dock and click on it whenever you want to backup the dB file. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.
NOTE: The new rebuild option in iPhoto 09 (v. 8.0.2), Rebuild the iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup" makes this tip obsolete. -
External hard drive gone wrong and copied everything to Imac HDD filling it completely
I have had my iMac backed up to an external hard drive for years and randomly the External hard drive is now not readable and it has seemed to copy everything to my imac hard drive filling it completely.
any ideas how to firstly fix the external drive without losing everything on there and second why it would have copied everything to the Imac?
I cant even do a restore from a back up as its all backed up to external drive and its saying its not readable.If they're still in two folders (iTunes app and Music) on your external, can you not just copy those two back to the internal drive and expect it to work properly again? It's my understanding that music you wish to be active in iTunes must be on your internal drive.

I have tried everything I can think of to fix problems I'm having with using/viewing purchased movies and TV episodes and viewing them in itunes.
They start to play for only a few minutes - usually choppy and distorted video and sound sync and then the laptop powers down entirely and goes into a loop of inability to start back up normally or through safe mode, etc.
I have absolutely no other problems watching and viewing videos from other websites orr methods for hours and hours on end. I've uninstalled and reinstalled itunes numerous times and still have the same issues.
I'm wondering if there's a Windows setting or preference that is incorrectly causing this problem or if there's an error within itunes itself.
Any help to correct would be appreciated since I've spent a ton of money purchasing videos I cannot view.Try this:
Plug in your iPod,
1. Right click My Computer >> Manage and select Device Manager in the left tab.
2. Click Portable Devices >> right click Apple iPod >> Uninstall
3. Unplug and plug your iPod, now wait for windows to re recognize your ipod [ In Device Manager, you will see the new recognized Apple Ipod ]
4. Press F5 to refresh your windows explorer and see if your Apple iPod will show up with a camera icon.

The easy way is from the backup you make of your computer so in case something happens you don't lose anything.

Select the store on the left side of iTunes.
Click on Purchased on the right side under Quick Links.
You can re-download your available previous purchases.
This will not reconstruct your library as it was. It just puts the media back. You will have to do playlists, ratings, etc. If you have music from another source you will have to get it from there again. -

I lost everything on my computer. My iphone 4 has all the things i need on it when i try to sync it itunes tells me it is going to clear the phone I have already atherized the new computer.
You may be able to buy a program to do this - not supported by Apple.
the ipod is not a storage device. The sync is one way - computer to ipod. The only exception is itunes purchaes.
The music should be on a computer as that is where they came from in the first place. -
Spinning beach ball and frozen spotlight on iMac
I cannot use spotlight. The window opens and I cannot type in it because I get a spinning beach ball when the cursor is moved to that area. No matter what I do, it won't go away. I have run disk utilities, zapped the pram, run tech tool pro. Searching on this subject did bring up discussions of cache cleaner, but it appears it is no longer available for Snow Leopard (even though it appears you can download it from several places, it is really Lion Cache Cleaner). Relaunching the finder does not help. Restarting the machine doesn't help either, as soon as I try and use spotlight, the same thing happens. In fact, the whole right side of the menu bar causes the cursor to turn into the spinning ball. Any ideas?

JoeI think it is definitely related to indexing. I am attaching a screen shot. I think that the application I have open in the menu, which I cannot remember what it is called, nor can I turn it off because my cursor is a beachball, may be part of the problem. While I was trouble shooting, a menu dropped down show that my computer was being indexed. At the same time spotlight opened by itself and it said "Indexing". I tried relaunching the finder, which would not happen. I had to hit the power switch to shut down. Do you recognize what that program in my menu bar is?

I have looked at the forum topics and can't find this problem listed.
My e-mail was working just fine until yesterday evening.
Now it is locked in some sort of loop.
I tried to send a message to myself to test and the gear wheel in the "sending" box just keeps turning constantly and the mail activity shows it sending but it has been half sent for hours.
The i,mac accounts do not have stored messages in some of them and a sort of time clock to the right of the heading.
I have deleted messages from the inbox but they return after a re boot.
I have sent messages from gMail and they do not arrive but as gmail is synced with my Mac I can receive them there and other messages.
Mail will not quit and will only force quit.
I have re booted over and over with no change.
All other systems (apart from Time machine working ok, but that's another story).
Any assistance would be appreciated.
In the meantime I will force quit mail once again.

if Mail lets you, I would first rebuild each mailbox to see if that helps - select a mailbox then go to mailbox>rebuild
if that does not help, I would look in the keychain access app to see if you have more than one password for that account(s) there that would cause a conflict, and delete to see if that solves the issue.
if that does not helps, I would delete the email account(s) from mail>preferences>accounts, quit Mail, trash com.apple.mail.plist in homefolder/lirary/preferences for good measure, launch Mail again and then recreate your email account(s) from scratch.

I had a computer hard drive crash, and lost everything, including music and video I had transferred to my I-Pad 2 from other sources. The upgrade to the current OS warns me that I will lose all non-Apple downloads when I upgrade. I have lots of non-Apple music and videos that I cannot replace. What do I do????
Betsy, the place to look for the conduit settings is not in Palm Desktop, but in the HotSync Manager. This is found in the little Hotsync icon in the bottom right tool tray of your computer.
Click on it, choose Settings, then Applications. Highlight the conduit you wish to change, then click the "Configure" button. Choose the direction you wish. Don't click the "Default" button, or this will be the direction that will occur every time.

iTunes is not designed to do that. However, this user tip from tt2 may help you recover your music from your iPod, although it's not a simple process: Recover your iTunes library from your iPod or iOS device
Ignore any references in the tip to iOS devices, the Classic does not use iOS. The tip has a list of software, including the TouchCopy referred to by tbirdvet that may assist you in recovering your music. -
Mac Mini crashes and restarts all the time?
Hi! I was really hoping someone could help me out.
I have a mid 2011 Mac Mini which used to work all right, but has been messing up since last summer, restarting, freezing, crashing and doing everything that makes working with pictures (Preview, Lightroom, Photoshop, iPhoto) impossible. Safari crashes often, too, and looks weird sometimes (text disappears, leaving only blocks where text was -- but restarting Safari works for that).
I've done all updates I can think of (using the latest Mavericks), 1/3 of disk space is free (about 150 GB), the most apps I have open at once is 3-4 (Mail, iTunes, Safari, iPhoto), and I almost never use Lightroom or Photoshop with any other apps open. I only have power cable and HDMI connected at all times, sometimes SD card or iPad, but then only for a few minutes for syncing. Since 90% of what I do on my Mac is editing pictures, this issue is seriously inconvenient. The computer usually crashes when working with pictures, but also when I'm only using Safari/iTunes.

IPhone crashed during iOS5 update. iTunes crashed and cant open or uninstall. Please help
iPhone 4 crashed and dumped everything while trying to update to iOS5. Now iTunes won't open so I tried to run Apple Software Update... gets half way through the install and then i get an error... cant find fold containing the installation package 'AppleSoftwareUpdate.msi'.
I'm at a loss and need help getting iTunes back up and running so I can restore my iPhone.

I have been trying for 2 hours and on hold to Apple to try and get my iPhone 4 to restore. I did back up before I installed it but whether it picks that one up is another question.
I have had the same problem before when i got a replacement phone from Apple and it took an hour or so to work.

You can only deauthorize computers you still have physical access to. If you have reached the limit of 5 authorizations and need to authorize yet another machine you can always use the deauthorize all option described in this Apple support document. This procedure can only be performed once a year.

Three ipod cLassics fail to upate and lost everything. wont restore!
I have had three ipods crash and loose everything on them, itunes says to resore but cannot. Is it my windows 7 or what?
First try this
For Mac computer
1. Open the disk utility, hope your iPod appears there (left hand side), highlight it
2. Go to Tab “Partition”, click either “Delete” or “Partition”, if fails, skip this step and go to 3
3. Go to Tab “Erase” , choose Volume Format as “MAC OS Extended (Journaled), and click Erase, again if fails, skip it and go to 4
4. Same as step 3, but open the “Security Options....” and choose “Zero Out Data” before click Erase. It will take 1 to 2 hours to complete.
5. Eject your iPod and do a Reset
6. Open the iPod Updater and click “Restore”
If does not manage to solve it, connect your 3G iPod with a PC, make sure that you connect your iPod via Firewire port and pre-install the iPod updater (prefer 6-2006 version) with the PC. Try to do a Restore there, but please not that does not matter whether you can complete the Restore or not, after a while, connect your iPod back with your Mac, it will get recognized. -
Help Please! My Harddrive crashed and Final Cut wont start!
Hi, I'm new to the forum and I was wondering if somebody could give me some advice on what to do if one's Harddrive crashed, was deconnected from the Computer and now Final cut Express HD asks me to reset volumes when I start the programme? If I do so would I loose any data on my new External Harddrives?
One of my Hard drives crashed last week when I was trying to burn a movie on DVD and I have a new one now, Final cut used to use two of my Hard Drives, one of which is still working- but it wasn't used as a source anymore when I crashed last week, since it was full...would my new Hard Drive and the old Hard Drive be affected by this command?

The problem was the following, my PowerBook has a 60 GB capacity for saving things (please excuse my terminology)...that wasn't enough so I connected external harddrives to save my media files and movies etc etc. The hard drive that contained my media files is fine, but the one with the edited version of the movies crashed and deleted everything. So I got a new harddrive and started over...got no message, imported the media files into a new project and edited again, but this new harddrive crashed again and deleted everything too. So I wanted to start over once again with a new harddrive today and connected both the new harddrive and the one with the media files to the Powerbook, but suddenly when starting Final Cut Express, this message appeared:
In order not to loose any data this path is neccessary: ''The name of my deleted harddrive that isn't connected to the computer''- missing and I have three options: Quit, Retry or Reset Volumes
Now I should maybe specify that while I was editing the last time, I frequently got the message that my memory was full and I should choose a different hard drive for FCE to do the automatic saving on, so I selected my larger new hard drive(the 2nd one that crashed) as opposed to the selected one from before with my media files on it, which had reached the end of its capacity (in 'Settings' or 'PreSettings').
Now my worry is that something will be reset on my old and new new hard drive that I don't want to be reset, but I cant edit my movie if I don't find a solution to this...I'm so sorry about this being very confusing probably...but Thank you very much in advance for your help!
