IMessage Fallback if data unavailable?

When I sent a message to my iPhone from another iPhone it uses IMessage, but when I disable wifi (to simulate I am out of reach of an Internet connection) it doesn't sent the message as an SMS.... The sender doesn't necessarily know if I do or don't have a data connection so iMessage should see this and fall back, isn't it?!

For the record, I mean disabling Internet on the receiving side, so the sender should not sent an iMessage but a SMS instead, which it currently doesn't.

  • Issues with iMessage when switching data carrier (wifi - cellular)

So I have had this issue with my 5S and now my 6+ in iMessage. Not *always* but often enough I've run into issues sending messages via iMessage when I associate with wifi in that they don't send. I'll get an error message saying "not delivered" and it will stack as many outgoing messages I try to send. However, if I force the first message to send as text, subsequent messages will go through afterwards without issue. If I go from wifi to cellular I have no issues whatsoever and when I have these issues on wifi, my data works fine (incoming emails, Facebook notifications, etc.). I used to run cellular data only because I had unlimited but now I have a cap so I intend on using wifi when possible...but to have to send my first message as a text just so I can use iMessage is annoying...

    Hi there BigDogg795,
I would recommend taking a look at the troubleshooting steps for iMessage found in the article below.
iOS: Troubleshooting Messages - Apple Support
To resolve issues with sending and receiving iMessages, follow these steps
Check iMessage system status for current service issues.
Go to Settings > Messages > Send & Receive and make sure that you registered iMessage with your phone number or Apple ID and that you selected iMessage for use. If the phone number or Apple ID isn't available for use, troubleshoot iMessage registration.
Open Safari and navigate to www.apple.com to verify data connectivity. If a data connection isn't available, troubleshoot cellular data or a Wi-Fi connection.
iMessage over cellular data might not be available while you're on a call. Only 3G and faster GSM networks support simultaneous data and voice calls. Learn which network your phone supports. If your network doesn't support simultaneous data and voice calls, go to Settings > Wi-Fi and turn Wi-Fi on to use iMessage while you're on a call.
    Restart your device.
Tap Settings > General > Reset > Reset Network Settings on your iPhone.
If you still can't send or receive an iMessage, follow these steps
Make sure that the contact trying to message you isn't blocked in Settings > Messages > Blocked.
Make sure that the contact you're trying to send a message to is registered with iMessage.
If the issue occurs with a specific contact or contacts, back up or forward important messages and delete your current messaging threads with the contact. Create a new message to the contact and try again.
If the issue occurs with a specific contact or contacts, delete and recreate the contact in the Contacts app. Create a new message to the newly created contact and try again.
Back up and restore your device as new.

  • Is imessage charging my data or texting usage?, Is imessage charging my data or texting usage?

I'm currently using Tmobile. I have 4g data and unlimited texting, when i use imessage without wifi, is there a way to message them without using my data, and charge it to sms instead? thank you!

imessage uses wifi if available.  If it is not available then it will use cellular data  (part of your 4 GB) and not be part of your text plan.  When you have no wifi and you send an imessage using cellular data there is no way to do that by charging to your unlimited SMS plan.  If you are converned that imessage will use up you r4 GB (which is unlikely) you could turn off imessage and just send the message as SMS text and then turn imessage back on

  • Why do I get iMessage failed update date and time in settings

My iphone5 keeps changing it time zone on it's own and I keep getting a notification in messages saying iMessage failed update your date and time in settings.  I have update it several times and it's keep doing it.  Now it's just frustrating.  How can I take care of this problem for good.

I have also been getting the message ever since I got my iPhone 5 on September 12.  I have to reboot the phone to fix the problem or turn the "Set Automatically" off and then back on. This is a glitch likely with Apple's iOS software, but my Verizon store said that have received numerous complaints on this issue, but no patch has been released for it as of yet.

  • IMessage using my data plan

I received a text message from AT&T this morning saying that I had used 65% of my data plan already (it is the second week of February). I don't use the internet or internet using apps very often, so I was very confused when this happened. I called apple and they proceeded to tell me that when I'm not in a wifi area, my iMessage will use my data plan. If this application comes with the iphone 4s , then why isn't there a way to disable it when on the 3g network only? I want to be able to use the iMessage application, but cannot afford the unlimited data plan in order to do so. This is ridiculous, so if anyone else is having this problem, please write back. Also, if anyone has figured out how to disable iMessage just in 3g areas (for the 4s), please let me know.

Either don't use iMessage while on 3G or turn 3G off ENTIRELY under Settings > General > Network > Cellular Data OFF.

  • IMessage question - texting, data, etc.

My friend just got the iPhone 3rd generation.  His parents are very strict about texting, so they've disabled it from the plan with their carrier.  But we can easily communicate with each other through iMessages when we are both connected to a wifi service (I am on my iPad).  I was wondering if it cost anything if you sent messages through wifi.  I know it doesn't cost me anything, but I'm primarily concerned if it costs him anything. Also, can you use iMessages without wifi on your phone when you are sending to another apple user, and you don't have texting capabilities?  Just wondering, because we never get to talk outside of school, and this would definitely be a great way to communicate without having to call.

Imessages does not cost anything when on wifi. cellular data would need to be used to do otherwise and if it disabled through the carrier then i dont believe he could.

  • T-mobile iMessages with no data

Alright. I have a factory unlocked iPhone 4 running iOS 5.0.1 on baseband 4.11.08
On my plan I have unlimited texting but no data. When I text someone else with an iPhone with no wifi I can send an iMessage. I don't have a 3G connection either. Also whenever I try to access a website, it sends me to the data plan purchase page, not allowing me to use data. How is this possible and will I be charged extra for it?
    Thanks in advance!

Yes, you are confused. The Messages app has two abilities on the iPhone, it can send cellular text messages, SMS, to anyone who can receive such messages and it can send internet messages, iMessages, to other iOS devices and Macs with just a wi-fi connection. Wi-Fi messages have blue talk bubbles and SMS cellular messages have green talk bubbles.

  • Still tries to send me imessage when my data is off

    Hey everyone
I'm really new to the iphone and there's something that I'm trying to understand. I have imessage activated all the time, but I turn my wifi/cellular off and on all the time throughout the day. My girlfriend keeps her cellular on all the time but her phone keeps trying to send me iMessages when I've turned my network off. Isn't her phone supposed to recognize that I'm offline and send SMS instead? The way it is now she always sends me texts and thinks they've been sent only to discover later that they weren't sent because it tried to use imessage. And the option to send as SMS in the messages settings is enabled. Please enlighten me!
    Thanks

Yes, as I understand it, the limit is technically 128 bytes, and Hillebrand determined that 160 7-bit characters just nicely fit, on average, into that signaling bandwidth (hard to have people track their message length in bytes, so someone had to make the call of a countable character limit).
I just remember being so annoyed with it on my phones in the 1990's and stupid "predictive" text entry on a standard phone keyboard, as well as having to actually count your characters so you would not get an error on send
P.S. back on one of these even (or one of those old Qualcomm phones, I can't remember the model numbers I had) - although sometimes, I miss those old simpler cell phones.

  • Mobile data unavailable

    Hello world,
my name is Luca, from Rome, Italy.
I bought a Xperia Z3 Compact in September, I found it to be an awesome device, but since the first day I got a strange behaviour on mobile networking.
Often even if the device shows a very strong signal like HSDPA+ at full strength ( 4/4 bars ) still my mobile internet connection doesn't work at all, and the only way to reenable its functionality is to turn on "airplane mode" and off again..
Because of the issue I contacted the Sony assistance service that guided me to the closest repair center, and in less than 2 weeks they gave me the device back, unfortunately with the very same issue still there, attached is the repair recepit that claims that the issue was not found at all, the translation of the note field is:
"Issue not found, software updated, touch parameters calibration ok, recharge and power consumption verified.
Data connection - Wi-Fi ok, if the issue will show again, proceed to configure internet/MSS setting.
Back cover broken, fixable out of warranty." https://www.dropbox.com/s/7ttaixyqp1xqx59/recepit.jpg?dl=0
There was also a minor issue about strange "noisy" behaviour / hyper sensitivity of the touch screen that was actually fixed by the software update ( the Lollipop update was rolling out those 2 weeks here in Italy ).
The network issue itself is not 100% reproducible because some lucky times the issue doesn't show, but I managed to get a couple of screen recordings showing the issue, in both recordings I'm trying to access some internet service ( googling things or accessing some youtube clip ) but the browser and the YouTube client simply get stuck on loading. Note also that no "Network not available" alert is shown and that the signal icon in the top bar shows a full power HSDPA+ connection available. https://www.dropbox.com/s/149fflg1ayxwcyk/record.1.mp4?dl=0https://www.dropbox.com/s/yjpzwgkzbj4y29y/record.2.mp4?dl=0
For sake of completeness my carrier is TIM, with a LTE enabled plan.
The device is now configured to use 3G/2G networks only but the issue arise in 4G mode too.
Also the "stamina mode" and the "background data queue" are set but I spent various days trying the different permutations of these and other settings looking for a combination that would solve this thing, with no success.
I also already tried disabling bluetooth, again with no result.
The device has "developer options" enabled but is not rooted nor the boot loader unlocked.
I understand the people at the repair center cannot deeply investigate every single device they receive but I hope you will understand my disappointment in having a 500€ device that simply has its most powerful feature broken.
If you cold put me in the right direction to solve this issue it would be great.
Thank you very much for your attention and in advance for your help.
    Luca Castoro

@uliwooly This is the screen recording I captured yesterday evening, forgive me, because the software repair moved the icons in the notification bar to their original location I was missing the "airplane mode" icon even if it was in the very center of the screen ( I was looking for it where I placed it in my previous configuration in the lower right corner ) so the video is slighlty longer than necessary. Also i forgot to change the capturing mode from landscape to portrait so there are black bands on the screen sides. https://www.dropbox.com/s/ye9a687jrncoja5/record.3.mp4?dl=0 Tomorrow I'll ask a friend to swap for a couple of days our devices so I should be able to investigate if it's a SIM related question or a device fault.I really don't think it will show itself as a SIM related problem as I can always make/reveive voice calls or SMS, but at least I'll remove any doubt about this thing.

  • ICal data unavailable after volume restore

I recently used ASR to create an image of a data partition of a server. The data partition in question also held the iCal Server data store. After installing new drives, I restored this partition with ASR, and all the ACLs were gone from all the files (that may be normal, but it was annoying). But the real problem: nobody on the client machines can see their calendars - they don't show up in the list under their account descriptions.
I've run proxyclean, but nothing needed cleaning. It's clearly a permissions problem, I just cant figure out where.
Data store location in ical reads "/Volumes/Data/iCalData/CalendarServer/Documents"

I have also seen this problem.
My fix for it was to get the iCal package off the install CD.
To do this, download a program called Pacifist. What it does is it reads the install disc, and finds all the packages that the programs are in.
It is really handy for installing individual apps.
Once you have extracted the package, install it as usual. Then you should see all you data back in iCal, until it breaks again.
Note: This is not really a fix, rather a way to get iCal working again.
I have also seen this problem happen when there was no update done, or rather the update was done a month before the problem occurred. This was a real fail update by apple and i hope they make a fix for it in the next update, although now that Snow Leopard is out, your probably won't wee any more fixes, as they will be too busy patching up 10.6, already up to 10.6.2

  • Data unavailable

    I have requirement as follows:
User generates a report by running a pl/sql procedure. Report is based on DB table which is deleted completely every day and data will not be available for 1 hour.
Requirement is, during this 1 hr period also user should get the report. We do not have to rewrite/alter procedure which is in production.
    - Flash back option is disabled in DB
    Any idea is appreciated.
    Thanks in advance
    Sateesh

    Hi,
One solution i can think is ...
For an example you table name is LIVE_TABLE.
    1. CREATE another table NON_LIVE_TABLE
    2. CREATE VIEW which will be pointing to LIVE_TABLE and use View name in the procedure instead of table name.
    SQL> create table LIVE_TABLE AS SELECT * FROM DUAL;
    Table created.
    SQL> create table NON_LIVE_TABLE AS SELECT * FROM DUAL;
    Table created.
    SQL>
    SQL> CREATE VIEW FINAL_TABLE AS SELECT * FROM LIVE_TABLE;
    View created.
    Table TRUNCation and Data Loading:_
    1. Before Loading the data Query the ALL_DEPENDENCIES view to get the dependent table name.
    SQL> SELECT referenced_name from ALL_DEPENDENCIES WHERE NAME='FINAL_TABLE';
    REFERENCED_NAME
    LIVE_TABLE
SQL>2. Now TRUNC and LOAD data into NON_LIVE_TABLE if depenecy is on LIVE_TABLE else vice versa.
    3. RECREATE the view so that it starts pointing NON_LIVE_DATA ( next day it should point LIVE_DATA).
    4. Next day repeat STEP 1 to 4.
Recreation of view will take hardly few miliseconds and your reports will be available all the time.

  • IPhone 6+ 128gb Gold now says ship date unavailable

I am getting frustrated along with the rest of you.  I ordered an iPhone 6+ 128GB Gold within 30 minutes after orders opened online.  My email confirmation listed Sept 19th as ship date.  The order status page said the same thing until late yesterday afternoon.  Now it says "not available at this time"  The availability for my husband's iPhone 6 64GB which was on the same order says the same thing.  Within 15 minutes of placing that order I placed orders for my kids' iPhones.  Those confirmations listed Oct 7 as the ship date.  Now the order status says "not available at this time"
What is going on?  I have called customer service last evening and a rep spent over 30 minutes telling me I will get my phones when Verizon gets the phones, how many orders they had, Apple is never prepared, I will get an email when it ships, and on and on she went.  It was like I was being lectured about "This is what happens when I try to order along with millions of other crazy people."
It seems like no one at Verizon knows or can figure out what is going on with our orders.  I ordered from them 2 years ago at iPhone 5 launch.  It look less than 5 minutes.  Order status was always updated.  Phones arrived on schedule.
I just want an honest update on the status of my orders.  Customer Service, are you listening?

ordered 6 plus 128gb space gray on 10/13/2014. (10-31-2014 ship by) Have not heard anything but the e-mail of it now being by 11/21/2014 ship by, which I received after 7:00pm on 10/31/2014. (order status still shows 10/31/2014 ship by)
I would love to know if anyone else has ordered the same model and color and actually received it?

  • Howto configure iMessage received/send date format

    Hi,
is it possible to change the format of the date of received/send messages. Messages which are a few days old are shown with the detailed date they where received/send, e.g. 01.01.1970. But for messages which where received today or yesterday the real date is replaced by Today, yesterday, etc.
So is it possible to have the real date for all messages no matter when they where received?
    Thanks
    Mike

    No.

  • "imessage failed" your date and time settings need to be updated

Getting this error on my VZW iPhone 5. Had it set to automatically get the time from the network so I changed it and set the time manually and it is still happening. The messages appear to go thru even though I get the error. Any ideas? Also...the *228 that you used to dial from a VZW phone to update the network settings appears to be blocked from an iPhone 5.

    Me to I'm getting this
