IMessage - iChat bonjour chat problem

My office have 6 iMacs. 2 uses ichat and 4 uses iMessage. We don’t have any problems with bonjour communication between 2 ichats but when using the macs with iMessage it is often hard to chat between boniour iMessage to ichat or iMessage to iMessage. The chats sometimes cannot be delivered and often online bonjour friends appear offline.
The temporary solution I’m using now is by quitting iMessage and turning it on again. But when the mac goes idle, the problem will appear again.
Are there any preferences that I can set on each iMac so that every iMac can chat/send files smoothly? Are there any sharing settings that I should change?

Hi,
Often a problem can change once we have more info.
Like this one what seems like a Bonjour In Messages and iChat turns out to be an issue with you staying On line.
Are you connected to the LAN via Wifi ?
If so do this:-
In System Preferences> Network > WiFi make sure the option to show the Menu Bar icon for Airport is active.
Now right click and hold the Menu in the menu bar.
Select the Network Diagnostics that appears  by doing this.
(Using the ALT whilst trying to grab a Screen Shot also show other details but you wnat the bottom item)
After a dialogue asking for your Mac User Login Password you see this fisrt screen
Press continue (it will take a few minutes).
Make sure the Monitor option is selected and minimise the item to the DOCK.
If there are breaks in the connection to the LAN this will tell you.
Obviously you may have to wait some time for this to happen.
In the mean time check every computer has a different name in System Preferences > Sharing.
Follow that by checking the Contacts App/Address Book and that all have different info in the My Card.

  • Messages Beta and problems with Bonjour Chat

Let me start with that I totally understand Messages is in beta but I'm hoping someone will have a suggestion.
In our office we use Bonjour chat extensively for inner-office chat and file sharing. Most of our workstations are still on Snow Leopard few on Leopard and one is on Lion running iChat 6 and 2 MacBooks Pros have the Messages Beta on Lion. The ones with Messages are having sporadic issues with receiving new chat messages. When it does not work, the sender gets the error "The instant messaging connection failed. The other person's computer may be unreachable."  This is from iChat to Messages, or Messages to Messages. (Please note, things like iMessage and Google Talk are working fine for these Lion/Messages Beta systems, the issue is isolated to Bonjour chat.)
Now if the person with Messages starts the Bonjour chat to person with iChat it will work fine and then a back and forth chat session will work fine. Message to Message is pretty much broke.
Occasionally I get a firewall access dialogue for "imagent" wanting Firewall access and I always click Allow, but seems to do little help. If I disable the OSX Firewall completely (through the GUI) on any system with Messages and the problem will resolve itself.
As another troubleshoot I tried leaving the Firewall on, Messages on but logged off of Bonjour and have Adium on and logged in into Bonjour and everything works great.
So I can narrow down the issue to Messages, with Bonjour chat and the Firewall. It seems to me Message isn't telling Bonjour to open the right ports.
Any suggestions anyone can give will be greatly appreciated. Thanks so much!

    HI,
Can you double the chances of the engineers seeing this by also reporting your findings here
    http://www.apple.com/feedback/ichat.html
Messages is in fact iChat+ and Messages is identified as version 6.1
The drop downs for iChat version and OS version have been out of step most of the time since iChat 4 was the main version.  Just type the info on Versions in the free text area.
The fact that this Bonjour file Sharing seems to not be on an expected port is a bit concerning.
The original set of Ports are listed here or rather the set for iChat 3 and upwards
At note 2 at the bottom it lists the "Local" ports
Port 5353 is the everyday Bonjour port used by the Finder to find other Bonjour computers or devices.
This leaves port 5197 and 5298 for Texting and File transfers
If it follows the AIM model, the UDP 5298  would seem to be the most likely port File transfers are supposed to be on.
(It is known that A/V chats use the same port whichever Buddy List starts them - 5678 for invites then 16402 for everything else in iChat 4 and above)
Is IMAgent listed in the  Firewall ?
    (Messages should also be allowed.)
The other thing about the error message is that the port also seems to want to change as part of the process.

  • ICloud, iChat, Bonjour, Problems

Before Lion, in snow leopard, I used iChat bonour accounts for 4 of my office computers to communicate between staff members.  I was able to use MobileMe to sync bookmarks, addressbook, and iCal.  Each computer had it's own "address card" and so each iChat account showed up uniquily as it's own person in the bonjour buddy list.
Now, after an upgrade to Lion and migration to iCloud (and syncing iCloud between 3 of the 4 computers) iChat bonjour accounts behave strangely.  Here's how:
All 4 computers call themselves by the same name "Front Office 1".  I have gone in to address book on each computer to change "my card" on all 4 computers hoping to get the iChat name to change, but even after that, they all stay named as "Front Office 1" and the cards don't change.  In other words, I find the card I want to be that particular computers, and say, "Make this my card" and moments later, so "go to my card" and it goes to the "Front Office 1" card.  I'm wondering if that is a iCloud sync issue.
The weird thing is that one of the computers, mine, does not sync with this iCloud account but with my pesonal iCloud account, but it keeps assigning the "front office 1" card as my own personal card in address book and therefore in iChat bonjour.  So it seems to be an iCloud syncing problem on the other three computers, but I can't figure out why my computer, which syncs with another iCloud account, keeps assigning my card as "front office 1"
Any thoughts on how I can get iChat bonjour to work with iCloud syncing and how to get each individual computer it's own name in iChat?
In other words, I want to be able to sync with iCloud my address book--essential to business operations.  I also need to use iChat bonjour and want each computer to have it's own name in iChat--also essential to business operations.  I was able to do this before with mobileme, but it now appears that iCloud is making this not work.  I'm wondering if I am overlooking some setting or option.
    Thanks

    Hi,
Bonjour as Computers show up in the Shares Section of the Finder's side bar is taken from System Preferences >  Sharing  (See Name at top)
For iChat the Bonjour "Buddies" should be using the My Card or each computer and Broadcasting it.
However there are issues about syncing the info across iCloud which keeps updating/syncing continuously.
If you are saying that the Address Book My Card on one computer is this Front Office 1 and this is syncing across the others I am not sure how that is syncing to the 4th computer that is using a different iCloud Account.
I would tend to get each computer it's own iCloud ID.
There are ways to use a Server's Directory services (I am not sure of the correct terminology) that can then have  global Address Book  that can be access from each individual Address Book.
However if there are only 4 computers this extra step may be a step too far.

  • IChat Bonjour on our network

Hi - I've asked this on the iChat support page and have been directed by an expert to this group.
We have two computers on the same wifi network (airport extreme) both running iChat 4.0.7 (616).
We can see each other on the iChat Bonjour list, but only one of us can initiate a chat. (p.s. Video chats don't work at all... but that's the least of my problems at the moment)
One user consistently gets the error that the other's computer "may be unreachable."
No sharing enabled on either computer.
iChat.app and iChatAgent allowing incoming connections in the Firewall.
We have completely different user names.
We do not appear as shares in the Finder sidebar.
Computer names are not the same.
    Port Mapping Protocol is On.
The router is the Airport Extreme. I'm using an Airport Express in Bridge mode to extend the WDS network of the main Airport Extreme (configured in accordance with http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2044?viewlocale=en_US ). That's it for routers.
Any thoughts would be much appreciated.

Check their computer Short Name, their Address book entry for themselves and if their Firewall is set to be On (And not Set to Allow Essentials in Leopard)

  • Cannot log out of  iChat / Bonjour

Hi -- this is a rather strange problem: I use iChat to chat with other people through Bonjour. I have a status icon in my menu bar. I noticed recently that I was unable to sign out of Bonjour. I would disconnect through iChat and quit the application, but the status icon in the menu/status bar would still show all my nearby bonjour buddies and wouldn't let me sign off. This was a problem because people would IM me when I didn't want them to, and the only way to prevent it was to turn off my internet connection.
Foolishly, in an effort to eliminate this distraction for the time being I deleted iChat thinking that I could download it again for free from the apple website. Now I still am visible by bonjour buddies but when they try to chat me I get an error message saying that iChat needs my attention. I cannot log off through the status bar and I can still see other bonjour buddies.
    1. Is there any way I can reinstall iChat free of charge?
    2. How do I "log off" of bonjour chat?

    Hi,
    Welcome to the    Discussions
    1) http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1486891
Do the Easy Way and the COMBO Update listed nearer the bottom.
    2) Go to the iChat Menu > Accounts and Log Off the Bonjour entry.
    B) Go to the iChat Menu > Preferences > Accounts and Disable the Bonjour one.

  • Not able to Bonjour chat with macs on my network

I'm trying to set up a bonjour chat system with my office building.  Most people are on Macs and are able to chat fine through iChat.  However a few people are on windows machines, and I cann't get their chat to work properly.
They're using Pidgin on Windows XP professional edition 32-bit machines, with service pack 3 installed.  I've already installed the Bonjour printer support application from apples website
When they open Pidgin and sign in under their Bonjour account, the people on Mac's can see them on the network, however they cannot see anyone, and if anyone tries to send them a message, it gets bounced back saying "iChat can't start the chat, the invitation to "persons name" could not be deliviered".
Their firewall is not active, so that shouldn't be blocking the chat.  And their computers are networked fine... they can see all of the mac computers on our network.
Is there something that I'm missing?  or something else that I can try?

To the right of your post is another window with More Like This... on my page it has a few links that may help like this?  Have you tried a search in the forums yet?

  • Bonjour Chat between Computers on 10.3 and 10.4

Is there any way to chat between two computers on the same network that aren't using the same version of OS X? Such as one using 10.4 and another using 10.3?
    Dean

    Hi,
    Yes it will work.
The clincher is if you have changed the Mac's default workgroup.
This is the Subnet name. It is set in Directory Access in Applications/Utilities.
    Select the SMB line.
Hit Configure (Unlock padlock first if required)
The default is actually WORKGROUP on Macs. It is MSHOME on PCs.
Next thing to check is is the Mac Firewall On ?
If so this needs to have the iChat Bonjour/Rendezvous option enabled at least. I would recommend setting all the iChat ports in a separate setting any way as even the Bonjour/Rendezvous setting does not include port 5353 which is also needed for connections through s routing device.

  • Wifi / Video chat problems that are driving me crazy

    Hello all!
So here's the story. I bought a Macbook Pro about 4 weeks ago, and from the first day i've turned it on, I've been experiencing a few problems regarding my Macbook's wifi and ability to video chat. Ill address each problem separately
    Wifi:
So starting from the first boot up, it seems as if my Macbook Pro doesn't always play well with my network over wifi. After establishing a good connection for at least an hour, web pages will refuse to load, even though airport says I'm connected to the internet and to my network. When i turn airport off and back on, I'm prompted for my network password. When I enter it, it attempts to connect, and i get the message "network timeout". I keep getting this no matter how many times i attempt to reconnect, or restart. I have 2 windows computers (vista and xp) and 2 xboxes that are connected via LAN, and 2 ipod touches, an ipad, an old dell laptop (ubuntu), and a Macbook (snow leopard) that are connected at various times wirelessly. The problem persists no matter what time it is, what day it is, where i am in the house, or what is connected to the network. Some days it will happen 5 times, some days (like today), it has yet to happen, so it's very unpredictable. No other computers, including the Macbook, have this problem. I have yet to test this Macbook Pro on another network. I have searched various forums and tried multiple "network timeout" fixes, only to find myself being disconnected again. The problem does not happen when connected via LAN
    Video Chat:
This problem has also happened previously when i attempted to video chat on the previously mentioned Macbook. No matter what client i use to video chat (Ichat, oovoo, etc.), and no matter how I'm connected (WiFi, LAN), the video quality is very bad, and after a few minutes i lose connection (however, i retain a good internet connection). At best it is choppy, and i can barely understand the other person before i get disconnected. I've tried talking to people of various distances, from people in the same city, to my friend in florida, and i keep getting the same problem. My friends say that they're fine when they talk to other people and the quality is very good in comparison to mine, so I'm lost here. The video chat tests, appleu3test01 and 02 are crystal clear for me, while i don't get a response from 03. I figured it was because i was on wifi, since i have problems over wifi (above), but the problem persists even when connected via LAN. My internet sharing is OFF, as well as any other sharing option. I've gotten mediocre results at best doing VoIP tests, however i get stellar results from speed tests. Wired i get 20mb/s down, 5mb/s up, while wireless i get 5mb/s down, 2.5mb/s up, with a ping of 17ms.
Im curious to know if these two problems are related! My blame right now falls on the router or it's settings, but as of right now i really don't know how to go about fixing this.
My ISP is Verizon FiOS, and i must say I've seen a great improvement from when i switched from my local ISP (Time Warner Cable), however through my searching i have seen people run into problems with the macbook pro and Verizon FiOS and their routers. The problem is, I can't simply replace the router, It's used for the TV and DVR streaming and stuff, it had a COAX cable in it.
If it makes a difference, i needed LAN ports in my room, so i took my old Linksys WRT54G router with DD-WRT Firmware, and connected that to the wire that runs from the Actiontec M1424WR into my room, so i can connect my Xbox and my computer via LAN... that could be a possible interference.
I am a college bound 18 year old living with my parents at the moment, so extreme fixes (like switching ISP's) are out of the question for me, but i do have free reign over the router settings and such, so i can try most reasonable things. I LOVE my macbook pro, and don't see myself going back to windows anytime soon, so i want to fix these problems ASAP. I consider myself to have a good knowledge of computers, so lay every possible solution on me!
    Thanks in advance!

ok so all day yesterday i didn't have the wi-fi problem, but today I'm struggling to keep a connection. The status bar reads "Contacting website.com", and stays that way until i stop it, or it gets reconnected. I changed the settings mentioned above, but no dice. My router is up to date and everything too.
As for the Video Chatting problem, i didn't know that there was a connection doctor, so i tried that, and i get an amber light for "router type", and it says "port restricted". I searched around for a bit, and found somebody who said disabling the firewall on the router helps. I did that, and while i DID notice a significant improvement in video quality and connection quality, i still get an amber light with the message "router type: port restricted. This computers network setup includes one or more devices that are not fully compatible with audio and video chatting.". I still would like to get a green light here, as well as keep my firewall... any suggestions?

  • Bonjour causing problems with Windows 7

    Hi -
I installed iTunes 102.2.14, 64-bit version on my HP dm1 laptop.
While iTunes runs fine I have been having some issues that are only resolved by disabling Bonjour so I wanted to post as a PSA.
I found that my iTunes movie downloads were incredibly slow - no movie could be downloaded in under 5 hours.  I also found that my laptop would hang if I tried to download more than one movie at a time.
After a reboot in Safe Mode with Network, I was able to download my remaining movies very quickly and my laptop stopped hanging.  I've seen a couple of other threads about Bonjour being problematic on Windows 7, so I rebooted and disabled Bonjour.
Presto - no Bonjour, no problem.  My next movie downloaded in under 20 minutes.  No more Windows hanging.
    hth,
    AliKelSea

I perform computer support for a number of people and recently ran into this EXACT same problem.
Dell desktop with Windows XP 32 bit SP3. iTunes has been on this machine for over 3 years and has been update regularly.
Everything was fine until iTunes version 10.2.2. was installed, then iTunes would hang and not start causing a windows crash report to be generated.
I uninstalled iTunes, scrubbed the registry, rebooted the machine reinstalled the current version of iTunes, same problem.
I uninstalled iTunes again, scrubbed the registry, rebooted the machine reinstalled a prior version of iTunes, same problem.
I uninstalled iTunes, Boujour, Mobile Me, Apple Mobile Device Support, Quicktime, rebooted the machine, reinstalled a prior version of iTunes again, same problem.
Finally killed the process mDNSResponder.exe in the Task Manager. iTunes opened up no problem.
Went into Services.msc and disabled Bonjour so it does not start. Problem solved for now.
I have only run into this problem on this one computer, I believe that there may be a conflict with some other program installed and running on this machine.
Hope this info helps others as well.

  • Can I use iChat to chat with people on other platforms, e.g. yahoo etc?

    Dear all
Can I use iChat to chat to people on other platforms e.g. yahoo, aol, gmail, jabber etc? For example, I have just managed to sign into iChat with Gmail (had to resort to this because iChat won't let me log-on with my Mobile Me name), but now it seems iChat will only let me add other Gmail users?  Surely there is a way to log in with Gmail but chat with people on other platforms?
Any help would be most appreciated.

    Hi,
Since iChat 4 you have been able to log in to as many AIM or Jabber IDs as you have set up.
In Lion (iChat 6) they become a combined Buddy list.

And this is how iMessage works (as gdgmacguy tried to explain):
Messages lets you exchange text messages with other SMS/MMS devices using your cellular connection, and with other iOS devices using iMessage.
iMessage is an Apple service that lets you send unlimited messages over an active Wi-Fi (or cellular data*) connection to other iOS devices using iOS 5 or later or Macs using OS X Mountain Lion or later. With iMessage you can see when other people are typing and let them know when you've read their messages. iMessages are displayed on all your iOS devices logged in to the same account, so you can start a conversation on one of your devices, and continue it on another device. For security, iMessages are encrypted before they're sent
    * Cellular data connectivity requires iPhone or iPad (Cellular Models).
If you are sending an iMessage to another iOS device that is registered to Messages, then it will send it as an iMessage unless iMessage is not available.
