IMessage - iChat

My old laptop is running Snow Leopard 10.6.8 with iChat.
My other family Macs, iPhones & iPod touches all are using iMessage & everyone is using their Apple ID for the iMessage account.
Is there anyway I can get my laptops iChat to join the party & communicate with everyone else?

HI,
The Answer is both yes and no.
iChat versions can not do iMessage chats.
However certain Apple IDs are also Valid AIM names
These include older @mac.com name and @me.com names
Messages can join the same services iChat can in Addition to the iMessages service
You may already have one of these names
Your Family almost certainly have particularly if they have registered for iCloud to sync Contacts and stuff.
You could sign up for an AIM Name if you don't have an older @mac.com name.
NOTES
Passwords for @Mac.com and @me.com names need to be kept to 16 characters or less due to an AIM Server limit.
@me.com name will not work in iChat 5 or Earlier due to the way Apple have iChat 6 and Messages also login in to Me.com to then allow AIM to "See" the password.
So....
iMessages is a No
You can use and AIM Name or Jabber ID.
You and your family may already have valid AIM Names
So the iChat type Buddy lists are a yes.

  • IMessage - iChat bonjour chat problem

My office have 6 iMacs. 2 uses ichat and 4 uses iMessage. We don’t have any problems with bonjour communication between 2 ichats but when using the macs with iMessage it is often hard to chat between boniour iMessage to ichat or iMessage to iMessage. The chats sometimes cannot be delivered and often online bonjour friends appear offline.
The temporary solution I’m using now is by quitting iMessage and turning it on again. But when the mac goes idle, the problem will appear again.
Are there any preferences that I can set on each iMac so that every iMac can chat/send files smoothly? Are there any sharing settings that I should change?

    Hi,
Often a problem can change once we have more info.
Like this one what seems like a Bonjour In Messages and iChat turns out to be an issue with you staying On line.
Are you connected to the LAN via Wifi ?
    If so do this:-
In System Preferences> Network > WiFi make sure the option to show the Menu Bar icon for Airport is active.
Now right click and hold the Menu in the menu bar.
Select the Network Diagnostics that appears  by doing this.
(Using the ALT whilst trying to grab a Screen Shot also show other details but you wnat the bottom item)
After a dialogue asking for your Mac User Login Password you see this fisrt screen
Press continue (it will take a few minutes).
Make sure the Monitor option is selected and minimise the item to the DOCK.
If there are breaks in the connection to the LAN this will tell you.
Obviously you may have to wait some time for this to happen.
In the mean time check every computer has a different name in System Preferences > Sharing.
Follow that by checking the Contacts App/Address Book and that all have different info in the My Card.

  • Restore ichat history after system restore

Haven't found a usable solution to this problem yet, so help is greatly appreciated.
How do you restore all of your iMessage (iChat) conversations after retiring your Mac to an earlier point in time.  Specifically, I used Time Machine to return my iMac  to OS X 10.10.1.  Was at 10.10.3 (beta 2).  When I launch Messages, conversations are present as they were during the TM backup of 10.10.1.  So from this point I wish to return all the documents, photos, music, messages, etc. to the point prior to the system restore (10.10.3 b2).  Everything can be restored by use of TM for the folders, Documents, Movies, Music, Pictures.  But I can not get messages to restore.
Used various methods seen on various forums,  i.e. use TM and restore ~/Library/Messages; /com.apple.iChat,  but to no avail..  Tried various combinations of logging out/in of massages; iCloud, restarting the computer,  again with no avail.  I usually end up with all of the list of those that I sent a message to but no messages.
I believe there is some magical, specific order in which to do this successfully.  I haven't found it yet.
    HELP!
    & Thx

    Hi,
I have not delved deep enough to say which item actually holds the list of active Chats or Conversations in the side bar.
The chat.db item itself is the one that hold the "history" that shows up when your start a chat with someone you have chatted to before in iMessages.
You need to have Saved Chats  in the Archive folder for this to work with AIM, Jabber, Yahoo and Bonjour Buddies.
Apple's own documentation tends to refer to iMessages as Conversations and any other account as Chats.
The exception now being SMS/text which the app Links to iMessages.
If you just Restore the whole computer to the last day you ran OS X 10.10.1 then it should have all the Chats/Conversations you were having that day.
However changing them by effectively Importing the newer ones (those up to the last time you used OS X 10.10.3beta) will upset things.

  • IMessage Error - Can't Log In

Using my Apple ID that worked, I recently reformatted and reinstalled Lion to clean up everything. My Retina MacBook shipped with Lion and it was working fine before (it still works on my iPhone), but after the reinstall when I attempt to sign in using my validated Apple ID to iMessage I get the following message:
"The server encountered an error processing registration - Please try again later."
I have followed all the reccommended troubleshooting guidelines that the commmunity has suggested, including:
    - Deleting all .plist files related to IMAgent and iMessage, iChat, and FaceTime from the /Library/Preferences
    - Flushing DNS and clearing host file to default
    - Verifying that Wi-Fi is connected, time automatically is set
    - DNS servers are set to Google DNS (8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4)
    - Restarting after applying all settings (and I even reinstalled again)
    - Verified that there are no "unknown" or iPhone issued certificates in the Keychain
I have even put in a fake ID and password and get the same message, meaning there seems to be a connection problem where it isn't even reaching the validation servers.
    Any input would be appreciated.

    Hi,
I am seeing various posts now across several Communities about FaceTime and the  iMessages part of Messages beta having issues.
FaceTime ones seem to be about Logging in when people could before but now can't.
Some are about FaceTime not being able to Register an Apple ID.
Some of those about Mesage beta also seem to be about Registering the Apple ID involved.
I personally am finding I cannot send or receive pics sent to and from iPhones (I don't have an iPad to test with)
This points to an issue with the iMessages and FaceTime servers.
This could be to do with a general fault.
It could be to do with an "Upgrade" ready for the Mountain Lion release.
At present I don't have a "fix" that works.  I also suspect it will only be solved by time

  • IMessages video invitations only show green light

When I send a video chat invite on Imessages (ichat), the green light goes on but the other person never receives the invite. When someone sends me an invite, the light goes on but i do not have a screen come up. The same goes for trying to screenshare. The people who I have tried video chatting with are all able to video chat with other people on ichat. I am using an aim account, and I have tried clicking to show all to front to see if maybe the video chat window was hidden, but nothing happens. The green light shows, but no window pops up. Skype and facetime all work on my computer. Anyone have any ideas how to help? Thank you
I am using a 15 inch macbook pro retina, with Yosemite 10.10

Really doesn't matter if anyone else has or has not seen something like what you have. Your original adapter is faulty in one way or another and you should take it in to Apple with your rMBP to show them what is happening and Ask Nicely for a new one that works correctly.

  • Problem with a time zone in Belarus, Minsk

All Belarus users of Mac and iPhone/iPad have a problem with a time zone in Belarus, Minsk. If you set time in AUTO, then time going down for 1 hour from actual time. That is happened after Belarus didn't went for winter time this year. In this case on all Mac's and iPhones and iPad's didn't work at all Face Time, iMessage, iChat. Apple still not reacting for this problem.

Same issue here... That is really annoying when such a good things like iCal sync just doesn't work.
Also, in case if you trying fix it somehow... here is a lot of issues related to this one. e.g. if the time zone settings were set in manual order; we're get an authorization issue with applications like Twitter...

  • How do I deactivate imessage and ichat on a dead phone/  Recently switched to samsung

Howdo I deactivate Imessage and Ichat on a dead 4s?  Recently waithced to Samsing and not getting messages from iphone contacts

    Hi,
In theory an iPhone that appears to the Server as Off Line will be "de-registered" from the server.
Twice at various iOS Upgrades I have had the iPhone Number become greyed out leaving only the Apple ID is use (Despite the fact th item is greyed out and unchangeable by the user.
This should mean that the iPhone should present as not in service and the sender should "Switch" to sending SMS.
However as the Mac version may still have the iPhone number in it's Send and Receive lists then the iPhone may appear to be still logged in.
You can "disable" the iPhone number in the iMessages account (Messages > Preferences > Accounts).
Unticking the Receive At will also  remove it form the Start Conversation From drop down.
It can be removed by deleting the com.apple.ids.service.com.apple.madrid.plist in Mavericks and above as this holds the current Apple ID and any "Aliases" in use.  You will need to re-enter your Apple ID in Messages on the Mac if you do this.
Ultimately contacting Apple Support is the simplest and best way although some of the above may be needed to "tidy up" afterwards.

  • Is there a way to use iChat on Lion to communicate with my iCloud contacts using iMessage on their devices?

I currently have a MacBook Pro, iPhone and iPad with working iMesagge, all these i use to chat with my iMessage contacts without conflicts, recently I've been assigned a MacBook in my job which can't be upgraded to Mountail Lion and currently has iChat 6 installed.
When i log in using iChat, it doesn't list any of my contacts. Adding them manually gets them in the buddy list but still doesn't allow to send them messages since they all appear offline.
I already signed in with my Apple ID in the MacBook, the same one I use with all my working devices mentioned above. There is only one user account in the MacBook which i have created since this computer has been assigned to me only.
    Any ideas?

    Hi,
    Messages  is iChat+
The Plus bit being the Apple iMessages service.
Apart from the iMessages service both apps can join:
AIM (with AIM registered or AIM Valid Screen Names ending in @mac.com @me.com and @icloud.com from Apple)
Jabber (with names registered at Jabber servers.  Two exceptions are GoogleTalk IDs and Facebook IDs)
iChat 6 and Messages can also Join Yahoo.  Must be a registered Yahoo Name and not one of the ones that can be used with the Yahoo App itself.
All these chats will be AIM to AIM, Jabber to Jabber or Yahoo to Yahoo.
The confusing can be that each can use email looking names and IDs.
Jabber Names (with the exception of Google) are in the form of [email protected]
AIM registered names don't normally have any @AOL/AIM.com suffix but @ is an allowed character and as mentioned @mac.com, @me.com and @icloud.com names are also Valid.
Yahoo are also email looking  names in the form [email protected]
This does tend to mean it is easy to add an email to any Buddy list and it is initially accepted as it conform the the format.
Mostly they will appear Off line in an AIM list and Awaiting Authorisation in a Jabber list.
iChat as such will not chat to your iMessages Contacts.
It is an extra service that the Message App can join in addition to AIM, Jabber or Yahoo.

  • How can I get IChat contacts on my IMessage?

Hi, so I just got my new mac and I was very excited to start Ichatting. However, Ichat has been replaced by Imessage. I have a few questions regarding this. Is there a way for me to unistall imessage and get Ichat instead? If not, then how can I add IChat contacts to my Imessage. My sister is at university and she has IChat and I have IMessage and it wont let me message her because it says she is not signed up for IMessage. How can I make my Imessages connect to her Ichat?

As Niel said, if it's a first generation iPad, you cannot update it past iOS 5.1.1.
But if Facebook still offers their old app for that old iOS, here is how to get it:

  • Two part question 1) what happens if you  sign into messages beta on os x lion 10.7.5 after it expired? does the whole application not work or just imessage? 2) does installing messages beta on os x lion 10.7.5  delete ichat?

    Two part question
    1) what happens if you  sign into messages beta on os x lion 10.7.5 after it expired? does the whole application not work or just imessage? can you stil use AIM, jabbar, google talk, or yahoo?  if you open messages beta does it immediately tell you that messages beta expired?
    2) does installing messages beta on os x lion 10.7.5  delete ichat or just transform ichat into messages beta giving the illusion that ichat is deleted?

    Hi,
It was never completely clear whether it was just hidden or whether Apple ran a download page for iChat 6.
As the Download for Messages Beta was separate and "Deleted" iChat it would seem it would be another download for iChat 6.
iMessages will not function as it is only an Account type within Messages and iChat 6 does not have it.
Therefore messages on the iPhone will not sync to the Mac. (until you get Mountain Lion and Messages in that OS X version).
Mountain Lion and it's full version of Messages will not sync the iMessages that have happened in between the 14th December 2012  (end date of Messages beta) and the Install of Mountain Lion if you decide on that route.

  • My Ichat is no longer working now that I have iMessage

I can not get the ichat to work anymore.  I even created a new AIM account just so that I can do a screen share.. What is the deal?
I sent invitations that were not recieved at all and vice versa.. Please help.
    thanks

    HI,
    Messages in iChat+
The plus bit is that the app can also send iMessages (Apple's Messaging service)
Like most messaging services it is difficult (read as impossible) to get one service to message someone using a different service.
Screen Sharing needs your to be  using a Buddy list from either AIM or Jabber (iMessages does not have a Buddy List and Yahoo does not do A/V chats)
It is AIM to AIM or Jabber to Jabber to someone using iChat or Messages.
AIM names can included Apple IDs that end @mac.com, @me.com and @iCloud.com (Set up as AIM accounts in your Messages (or as Buddies)
Jabber IDs can be GoogleTalk and Facebook IDs  as well as other Jabber server IDs
Can you Video to the Buddy you are trying to Screen Share with ?
This will confirm there is enough Internet Speed between you (Screen Sharing is in fact an Audio Chat+)
The + bit takes more internet speed than a  plain Audio Chat.
After that it is about how the ports iChat/Messages needs through your router and how they are opened
iChat/Messages will only do Screen Sharing if you use UPnP or Port Mapping Protocol in Apple Base Stations.

  • How to replace IMessage with Ichat

I have recently updates to os x mountain Lion, and Ichat has been replaced. I hate IMessage how do i get back Ichat.

    HI,
The iChat App is specific to each Update within an OS X version run.
Messages is the version on Mountain Lion.
At OS X 10.8.2 it became version 7.0.1
That is to say that version 7.0 lasted for OS X 10.8 and 10.8.1
You can get Messages to look somewhat iChat like.
Lets say you have AIM (or AIM valid) Names and some Jabber IDs (including GoogleTalk or Facebook)
Either Add them in Messages the same way you would have in iChat (Use the Plus icon in Preferences > Accounts) or by activating the choice for Messages in System Preferences > Mail, Contacts and Calendars for any ID/Name you use in Mail or elsewhere.
This will give you a list of Accounts in the Messages Menu > Preferences > Accounts including the iMessages one and the Bonjour one.
If all are Enabled then the Window menu will now show Buddies (CMD + 1) in addition to the Messages (CMD +0)
If you use this you will see a combined Buddy List.
The can be unlinked by going to Messages > Preferences > General Section and Unticking the line that talks about "gather all accounts in to one list"  (actually it is only Buddy lists Account and does not include the iMessages account)
The Window Menu will now list as many Buddy lists as you have Accounts (Less the iMessage one and any that are not logged in.)
Each will have it's own keystrokes listed.
The title of the Buddy list and the Name in the Window Menu is dependant on the Description Field in the accounts pane.
Example Pic of the Accounts Prefs pane with Buddy lists
The iMessages account does not have to be active.
The main draw back is the Messages window itself with it's dual purpose Tabbed Chat window and interface to start Chats without using the Buddy lists.
Double clicking a chat will open it in it's own window.

  • Can iMessage be set to Compact View like iChat can?

Is there any way to switch from the chat bubbles to a more compact view in iMessage, something like iChat's Compact view?
I think the bubbles take up too much room and waste too much space.

No, there is no disc mode with any iPhone or iPod Touch. There are some applications in the iTunes App Store that can transfer documents to your iPod. Browse through the "Productivity" category.

  • Okay so I just updated my mac to the latest software.. Mountain Lion. I still can't find iMessage on it though. iChat is still there.

I restarted my laptop a few times and it still didn't work. What should I do to find iMessage? I thought it was supposed to replace iChat after I update my software to Mountain Lion.. :S

You are running Lion not Mountain Lion thus iChat. If you want Messages then you will have to upgrade (purchase)  Mountain Lion from the App Store.

  • TS4196 I am having problems un-installing iMessages(Beta) and re-installing iChat

Could someone help me with an answer to my problem. I installed the (BETA) version of iMessages, and now I want to un-install it and get my iChat bck.
But, I am running into a problem. Each time I to the the iMessages menu, and select "Uninstall Messages Beta" it begins the process by looking up software, then I get a window saying..."The software is currently unavailable...you can check for the software later by choosing Software Update from the Apple menu".
So, I am at a loss, and not know how to fix my problem. Is there anyone out there that can help?
I am on a new MacBook Air, 2GHz Intel Core i7.
    Thanks,

Are you using dial-up, cable, or DSL? Do you have a slow or fast connection? The former is likely to make it difficult to get a reliable download of a 4 GB file.
