IMessage in europe

Am I able to use iMessage in europe with my iPhone 4 (not 4S) for free?

iMessage is free all around the world. However, if you are traveling to Europe with your American phone, and use image, you will pay for data roaming, unless you only use it on wifi. Make also sure to turn off the send by SMS if it does work through iMessage or you may have a bad surprise with international text messages.

I am currently living in Europe and using my iPhone on airplane mode when I have wifi. My iMessage is switched to my icloud e-mail address and when I go to my setting to switch it back to my number, it is grayed out and not an option to click. This was working before with my number so I know that it's not from being on airplane mode. How do I get it back to my number?

They need to go into their settings>messages and make sure iMessage is on.  Also they should click on the send & receive button to make sure their phone number is selected.

  • Using iMessage on a trip to Europe?

I'm going on a trip to Europe and I was wondering if iMessage will still be available to use through the Wifi there for me to message my friends in the states who also have iMessage? I have Verizon by the way. If that even helps with anything.

Yep. iMessage requires a data connection, either WiFi or 3G.

  • My iMessage and FaceTime aren't working in Europe on a wifi connection?  What can I do

My I message and face time aren't working on my iPad since I arrived in Europe. What can I do to fix this? Both apps are turned on I'm settings

There is almost no chance it can be recovered, except at a cost far greater than a new keyboard.  Once wet, spraying with a cleaner will not do any good and most likely will make the situation worse.
Best thing at this point is go to your Apple store, or the on-line store, and buy a new keyboard.  Water damage is not covered by the warranty or AppleCare.

  • How much should/can I use my iphone 5 in Europe?

I'm vacationing in Europe next month and will be visiting London, Paris and Rome. I've heard all the stories about people coming home to outragous phone bills. I've also heard some suggestions on how to reduce the possibility of this happening. I'm assuming that all of this still applies to the iPhone 5. I'm under the impression that this phone is considered a "world phone", but I realize that roaming is roaming.
I understand that while I'm out exploring the streets of Europe, I shouldn't be scrolling my Facebook or Instagram feeds or updating apps. I know I should only be doing these things while on wifi. I also plan on bringing my Macbook so I can check emails and upload photos, etc.., again, only while back at the hotel on wifi.
I'm just wondering what if I happen to be out and about and need to use Maps for directions? What if I need to call the hotel for something, or call a business for general information? Can I check yelp to see if a restaurant is any good, or will that cost me more than the meal itself? How about sending and iMessage to check in with a family member back home. If I get seperated from someone I'm traveling with, is it going to cost me an arm and a leg to call them to find out where they are? Will my phone even work?
I know that Verizon has an international calling plan, but I'm not sure if this is for a short term vacationer like myself, or for those that travel frequently.
    Any advice will be appreciated!
    Thanks
(Verizon is my carrier by the way)

Thanks for asking about your device options while roaming through Switzerland, ellenajnos! The good news is yes, your iPhone 5c will work in that country. The better news is you can also add features to your account to enhance your experience and help you control the costs! Have a look at this great tool to plan your trip: http://vz.to/1k7RFqd

  • TS2755 My iPod touch is updated to the latest iOS, and I've cheched that my email address and the person I want to sent things to is correct. We have been using IMessage for the past few months error free, and now I'm unable to send/receive messages :( he

I have been using iMessage fine ever since it came out, I have had no problems at all. I've been in Europe for a week now and all of the sudden yesterday morning, iMessage has stopped receiving messages and when I attemp to send one, it says "sending" and the bar travels about 90% and then freezes, then the red icon saying not delivered comes up, and I'm unsure how to fix it. I've made sure everything is up to date, I've even changed my country in my account, the person trying to message me from canada says when they send me a message, it showed delivered. Why did this just happen randomly and how do I fix it?

  • Can I use old iPhone 4S in Europe for WiFi, w/o cellular service? A few Qs not found in Support Community-

I wish to upgrade to iPhone 6, but first want to know if I can use my iPhone 4S for camera, iMessaging and apps (i.e. What’s App) on Wifi after it is disconnected from U.S. Verizon network?
iPhone 4S, iOS 7.1.2 (reluctant to upgrade to 8.1.2), Verizon, U.S. only
Mac Mini, OSX 10.9.5 (reluctant to upgrade to OSX Yosemite)
I’ve read all of the old posts (2011 thru July 2014), but still have questions.  This is what I understand:
Upgrade iOS and apps with iTunes, before transferring to new iPhone 6
Change the name of my old iPhone http://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201997 (if I wish to name my new iPhone what my old one was called)
Enable airplane mode, then re-enable just wifi
    Activate new iPhone
Transfer data to new iPhone http://support.apple.com/en-us/HT2109
    QUESTIONS:
Q: When connected to WiFi in England, Italy and Sicily - do I keep it in Airplane Mode even though it has been disconnected from Verizon and I will have an active iPhone 6 on my Verizon account being used by my husband at home in the U.S.?
Q: Will there be a problem sync’ing to iTunes in the future, or my Mac Mini?  Will it conflict with my new iPhone 6?  Or is it just considered a different device, once it has a new name.
Q: How can I message my husband in the U.S. with the iPhone 6 from Europe using my old iPhone 4S on Wifi only?  Do I use my iCloud account, like I do from my Mac Mini to my iPhone?  Or can I set up a new iMessage account on the old iPhone 4S
I appreciate any insights and answers.  Thanks in advance!
    Daphne

It doesn't have to be that complicated, Verizon iPhones come unlocked, just tell VZ you're going on Holiday/Traveling and suspend the service, no need to pay for service if you're not going to be using it. Pick up local SIM cards in the countries of your choosing, pop them in, re-activate iMessage and you're set!
I recommend getting a SIM card from the Three network in England, they have great EU roaming rates and free like-home roaming in Italy.
Set your phone's region to match the country you're in, it'll save from some headaches when calling local/international numbers.
    To answer your questions,
    1. If you choose not to have a local SIM card, it is good to keep your phone in Airplane mode to save battery.
    2. Make sure the two iPhones have different names to reduce sync/restore issues.
    3. If husband has an iPhone also, you can chat with iMessage/Facetime, just give him heads up about the new number you'll have. Otherwise, use Whatsapp if he's got an Android. You can activate Whatsapp with your American number or the international number if you choose to get a SIM in Europe.
Also, Get the MagicJack app and/or Google Hangouts, both of those apps provide you with free calling to the USA and Canada using any internet connection. Google Voice is another good way to SMS across the seas.
Let me know if you need any more tips for iPhoning across the pond.

  • What happens to iMessage if I swap out my SIM card?

My wife and I are traveling to Europe this fall and plan to bring our iPhone 5c's with us. Our plan is to use local (O2, Czech Republic) SIM cards for phone and internet service, swapping in the O2 SIM when we arrive and replacing the VZW SIM when we return to the US. (We may also sign up for a VZW international plan at the same time, just in case we have problems with the O2 service.)
VZW tech support has assured me (though I will re-check before the trip) that our phones are already unlocked and will accept activation of another SIM card. Of course our phone numbers will change, but I expect our internet services, via O2 data plan or (mostly) Wi-fi, to go on like nothing happened. I understand SMS text messages will queue up in our absence. However iMessage operates over the internet, not SMS service. What happens to iMessages destined for our VZW number while the O2 SIM is in the phone? What about iMessages sent to the new number on the O2 SIM? And what happens when we return the VZW SIM to the phone? I can imagine confusion on Apple's end with the multiple services. Thanks for any guidance!

I'm going to call the question answered. I hadn't changed my iMessage setup since getting the phone at the Verizon store. I had to go through the process of registering my Apple ID with iMessage; dunno why that wasn't already done. But once that is done, iMessage should follow the phone just as wushu2004 and rcschnoor said. Putting the VZW SIM back in the phone returns it to its previous status -- though it may take several minutes for iMessage to change the phone number to the current SIM, don't ask me why.
I have to say I still have a difficult time understanding exactly what is going on with iMessage, though I think I finally understand that when iMessage says it's using [email protected], it's referring to my Apple ID (which is the same as my email address) and not my actual email service.
    Thanks, all, for your help!

  • IMessage not working new sim

I am running a an iPhone 5s on Verizon and I am currently abroad and bought a sim card in Europe frpm Vodafone and my iMessage will I not register my new number when my sim Is in, my friend got one at th same time and theres automatically connected any help?? I tried restoirng phone and it didn't work

Contact the carrier you're using. If the SMS messages that are used for activation can not properly pass back and forth with Apple's activation servers in the UK, then it will not activate with the phone number.

  • Does anyone know if iMessage will be free internationally for texting? moving to japan tomorrow and hoping it will be.

my wife and i are moving to japan and will be getting the iphone4s upon arrival.
obviously international texting will be an issue regarding pricing for plans through a carrier.
im hoping the new iMessage texting over wifi will solve this dilemma.  does anyone know if
it will work all the same overseas to use iMessage to text people back in the USA?

iMessage is absolutely free over wifi....doesnt matter if the sender is in Japan and the receiver in US.
I am in India and iMessage my friends in US and Europe for free.
Just your wifi/3G charges may apply....!!

  • Using iMessage on Wi-fi only device

How can I use old iPhone 4S iMessage over Wi-fi only...
I am borrowing a friend's old iPhone 4S to use as a Camera and Wi-fi only device in Italy for two weeks.  After much ado, I set up a new Apple ID, erased hers from the iPhone 4S, added mine and logged into my email.  Email now works - to and from the Wi-fi only iPhone 4S.
However, I cannot get iMessage to work under my new Apple ID.  It used to work with my friend's Apple iD, but all of my messages show up on her new iPhone 6.  The iPhone 4S still registers her phone number and says the carrier is Verizon, although it is not connected to Verizon.  Her phone number is active with her new iPhone 6 on Verizon Wireless.
I want to use iMessage from this Wi-fi only iPhone 4.  Help!  iMessage is frozen at "Waiting for activation".  I should be able to use iMessage from this old iPhone 4S over Wi-fi, right?.  I have an iPad Mini at home (Wi-fi only) that I can iMessage to and from quite easily.
Any insights?  I would love to use this in Europe for two weeks.

  • IMessage is working, FaceTime is not working

Hi. I have a problem, in my iPad 2 on iOS 7.1 i can use only iMessage, when i try to make a call using FaceTime with or without video it's not working. When somebody calling me using FaceTime and i accept this call, there's only "connecting", no audio or video, and after a while shows "call ended". iMessage is working fine. I'm using a WiFi connection in hotel in Morocco, range of WiFi signal is very good. iPad is from Europe. Please help and sorry for my english

I would recommend going into Settings - FaceTime and make sure that "you can be reach by" information is current and all contact info is included.
