IMessage inactive

Hi,
My iMessage shows inactive, when i try login into account it shows error message in popup "Could not sign in to iMessage - Could not sign in. Please check your network connection and try again". This is happening since I had installed maverick on my mac book pro. Recently had upgraded to Yosemite Beta 4. Still this problem exist. Also on my apple setting About this Mac Serial number shows "Unavailable".
Please help how to resolve this issue. Do I have to format my mac and install beta version again?
Rgds,

Hi,
That really is not enough info.
On What devices is iMessages not working ?
What have you done on each effected device ?
What, if any, error messages are you seeing ?
There are 4 error messages in the Link I posted above.
There is the separate issue of the missing Serial Number that is not listed by Apple any where.
There are more recent issues of the one to Contact Support.
There is a more "silent" issues where Contacts are reported as "Not Registered" only on the Mac.
If you are using an Apple ID that is not lined to iCloud then link it to iCloud.

  • Messages on MBPr shows "iMessage inactive" - help?

I've read through the threads, removed plist, etc etc.
Messages is happy with Bonjour and Google. I can log into iCloud and my appleID account just fine.
This MBPr (Mavericks 10.9.2) had a nuke-and-reinstall 10 days ago. The first time I tried to use Messages since that auspicious event was Monday.
But nothing will get Message to work on my MBPr. (Happy as a clam on my phone and iPad.)
This is the Preferences > Accounts window:
Eventually, I let the spinning wheel spin long enough that I was greeted with an error message:
    I'm connected. FiOS.
A few clicks of the "OK" button and I had a pswd field that would let me type.
This felt like I was moving up in the world - but being able to type in the pswd didn't fix anything.
So I tried changing from @mac.com to @me.com. That yielded a new error message:
It took several clicks of the "ok" button for the popup to go away, so I could try the gmail address associated with my account. No joy.
So I went back to my mac.com address (the primary one on the account) and I went back to error message #1.
OK, Ralph, work your magic. ;-)

    Hey!
Open Messages > Preferences > General Section and set it to "When I Quit, Set My Status to Off line"That was my status
Open FaceTime > Preferences and set it to Off.FT won't log in either. Spinning beach ball of death then the same "could not sign in check network connection" mess.
In the right hand pane find the IDS: yourAppleID-Auth Token item and delete it.MBP hasn't been preserving this pswd - I have to login to every Apple Thing every time.
There should be one called com.apple.facetime: registrationV1 Delete this as well.Couldn't log in (see above) but deleted.
In the Preferences folder find the following.I assume you want me to delete all of those items!
    Going to reboot now.
    Back.
Yes, I had to input Apple ID as well as pswd on Messages app.
OH! It says I'm signed in (Preferences > general)
And I can start a message to a friend in contacts!
    Success! Thank you!
PS - fixed FaceTime app as well.

  • Imessage on my iMac has created two iMessage account both asking for Apple ID....and no option to - (delete) one of the two duplicate accounts....how can I delete one of them it just bothers me due to sign in issues....goes inactive when signed in on othe

imessage on my iMac has created two iMessage account both asking for Apple ID....and no option to - (delete) one of the two duplicate accounts....how can I delete one of them it just bothers me due to sign in issues....when signed into one it signs out the other and goes inactive I just wanted to delete one of them so this issue doesn't happen....why doesn't it give the option to delete ONLY these two accounts

    1. Don't confuse "Apple ID" with iTunes Account ID.  You can have many Apple IDs but only one iTunes account active at a time.
    2. If you "changed" your iTunes account ID, you actually have 2 accounts - one under the old name plus the new name.
    3. You can't merge the accounts - they remain separate.  Apps purcahsed under the old account name will update ONLY WHEN THE PHONE IS SIGNED IN TO THE OLD ACCOUNT NAME  and visa versa.
    4. Likewise, you can sync only the apps, music, media purchased under the account the phone AND iTunes are signed in to.

  • My iPhone's number won't add itself to iMessage or FaceTime!

My new phone number is greyed out and not available to be selected for iMessage or FaceTime.  I've changed my iMessage/FaceTime phone number in the past without any issue, but now this new one won't add!  I've tried logging out of ALL devices and logging back in, but it didn't help.  No matter what I do, I can't select my telephone number to be active for iMessage/FaceTime!
    Here's some background:
First phone number on an iPhone 3GS with AT&T:  Phone number worked fine on iMessage!
Took my iPhone 3GS (unlocked) to Straight Talk Wireless (a Tracfone prepaid service branded for Wal-Mart) with a NEW number:  Phone number worked fine on iMessage!
Upgraded to iPhone 5 (locked to T-Mobile) on Straight Talk Wireless (with T-Mobile-compatible SIM) with the SAME Straight Talk Wireless phone number:  Phone number worked fine on iMessage!  This newer iPhone also introduced FaceTime and my number worked fine on that too!
Took the same iPhone 5 to Brightspot Wireless (a T-Mobile prepaid service branded for Target Stores) and got a NEW phone number:  This new number will NOT add to iMessage or FaceTime no matter what I do!  It stays grayed out and cannot be selected!
I have other Apple devices that also use iMessage and/or FaceTime:
iMac on OS X Yosemite Beta with both iMessage & FaceTime
iPhone 4S on iOS 8.0.2 used only as a glorified iPod Touch (kept on Airplane Mode with WiFi only -- it has an inactive dummy SIM so it would activate in iTunes and operate normally) with both iMessage & FaceTime
iPhone 3GS on iOS 6.1.3 (the same as used before with Straight Talk Wireless) now only used as a glorified iPod Touch (kept on Airplane Mode with WiFi only -- this one still has its most recent Straight Talk Wireless SIM in it so it would activate after its restore in iTunes and operate normally) with iMessage only (no FaceTime)
In case it matters, the iPhone 5 in question (with the phone number that won't add) is on iOS 7.1.2.
People have my new number but it's not going to all my devices when another iDevice sends me an iMessage and it's really frustrating for this to not work properly!  My only thought is that my iPhone 5's custom APN settings keep erasing themselves after a restart or a loss in signal, causing me to have no MMS or data (except WiFi) until I type the settings back in.  I can see why this might make me temporarily disconnected from Apple's servers, but I don't see why it won't add the phone number in the first place!  Please help!

I have the same issue... tried logging out of iMessages and FaceTime on all devices, reset network settings, start again from the iPhone which number i want to connect etc., but to no avail. It keeps being greyed out and I'm unable to select it no matter what...
O, and whats more frustrating, people are sending me iMessages to the number in question (like when they use the phone number and not the email address), the iMessage goes through from their side, but I never get it on any of my devices! Many people have asked me why I'm not responding to their messages and I have no idea they even sent me!

  • IMessage on MacBook Pro "Could not sign in. Please check your network connection and try again."

I am currently receiving this error message when trying to log in to iMessage on my MacBook Pro (Mavericks), "Could not sign in. Please check your network connection and try again."
I have never had an issue until the past few days as I have been setting up my new iPhone 5s. I used to have an iPhone 4.
When I go to the 'Messages' App., Preferences> Accounts> the iMessage account is set as "(Inactive)".
My Apple ID appears to be working fine in iCloud, the App. Store etc.
    Thank you for your help.

Check Enable this account in Preferences. Try logging in again.

  • Facetime and iMessage on Macbook Pro Retina display slow after Yosemite 10.10.3 Update

    Hi
I recently updated my Macbook Pro Retina display to Yosemite 10.10.3 update. I see that the Facetime and iMessage has become relatively very slow. Like for example when someone calls on my phone it takes like more than 15 seconds + to show up on my macbook. Earlier it used to be like instant!
I started seeing this problem on Yosemite 10.10.3 update only. Also the same is the story with iMessage. When I get an SMS or an iMessage from my friends it takes like a good 30 seconds + to show up on my macbook pro.
Just for your information, this is the version of macbook i am using
MacBook Pro (Retina, 13-inch, Late 2013)
    2.4 GHz Intel Core i5
    8 GB 1600 MHz DDR3
    251GB Flash storage
As Suggested by someone I also tried RESETTING my computer's PRAM. That didn't seem to help either. Can anyone help. If it is a genuine bug in Apple Yosemite, I'd like to file a bug in the community.
    Regards
    Shreyas

  • IMessage won't work and my phone number is grey and unalterable

I am trying to use iMessage and my iPod touch receives iMessages but my iPhone wont. When I try to reset it my phone number is grey and unalterable. I have taken my email address off, switched off and on and toggled the on/off button. Nothing helps, can you?

I have the same problem. After upgrading my iphone4 to ios 6.0.1 which is so called fix the bugs, i cannot activate imessage and facetime via my phone number, it is grey and inactive, not choosable. I can only use my apple id which is unreasonable, someone who wants to facetime with me has to use my mail address and cannot dial my number directly. I have been using this iphone4 for 1.5 years, and no problem till yesterday i upgraded to ios 6.0.1 from 6.0. Is this how Apple fixes bugs? Now find a solution for me Apple technicians. You make me upgrade, then i cannot use previous features. If your upgrade has problem, then dont publish it. Dont ask me to restore my iphone via itunes, i dont want to spend half a day to try to compensate Apple's fault. I am waiting for your solution.

  • "An error occurred during activation. Try again." Can't log into iMessage on Macbook for past two weeks.

iMessage worked fine on my Macbook until about two weeks ago.  I can use iMessage for gMail, but my iCloud account is inactive and I get the error message "An error occurred during activation. Try again." when I try to log in with any apple ID.  It works fine currently on my iMac and my iOS devices.
I have tried many suggestions, including checking the serial number, various time & date configurations, trying an alternate Apple ID, restarting, signing in and out of iCloud, and inspecting the keychain.

This could be a complicated problem to solve, as there are many possible causes for it. Test after taking each of the following steps that you haven't already tried. Back up all data before making any changes.
Before proceeding, test on another network, if possible. That could be a public Wi-Fi hotspot, if your computer is portable, or a cellular network if you have a mobile device that can share its Internet connection. If you find that iMessage works on the other network, the problem is in your network or at your ISP, not in your computer.
    Step 1
Check the status of the service. If the service is down, wait tor it to come back up. There may be a localized outage, even if the status indicator is green.
    Step 2
Sign out of iMessage on all your Apple devices. Log out and log back in. Try again to sign in.
    Step 3
Restart your router and your broadband device, if they're separate. You may have to skip this step if you don't control those devices.
    Step 4
    From the menu bar, select
     ▹ About This Mac
Below the "OS X" legend in the window that opens, the OS version appears. Click the version line twice to display the serial number. If the number is missing or invalid according to this web form, take the machine to an Apple Store or other authorized service center to have the problem corrected.
    Step 5
Take the steps suggested in this support article. If you don't understand some of the steps or can't carry them out, ask for guidance.
    Step 6
    From the menu bar, select
     ▹ System Preferences ▹ Network
If the preference pane is locked, click the lock icon in the lower left corner and enter your password to unlock it. Then click the Advanced button and select the Proxies tab. If the box marked SOCKS Proxy is checked, uncheck it. You don’t need to change any other settings in the window. Click OK and then Apply. Test.
The result may be that you can't connect to the Internet at all. Revert the change if that happens, or if iMessage still doesn't work. Remember that you must Apply any changes you make in the preference pane before they take effect.
    Step 7
    Select from the menu bar
     ▹ System Preferences… ▹ Flash Player ▹ Storage
    and click
Block all sites from storing information on this computer
    Close the preference pane.
    Step 8
Make sure you know the ID and password you use with iMessage. Launch the Keychain Access application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Keychain Access in the icon grid.
Use the search box in the toolbar of the Keychain Access window to find and delete all items with "iMessage" or "com.apple.idms" in the name. Log out and log back in.
    Step 9
Enable guest logins* and log in as Guest. Don't use the Safari-only “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac.”
While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your personal files or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.
Test while logged in as Guest. After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.
*Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault, then you can’t enable the Guest account. The “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac” is not the same. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing.
If iMessage worked in the guest account, stop here and post your results.
    Step 10
Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you start up, and again when you log in.
Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a Fusion Drive or a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to start and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. After testing, restart as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and test again.
If iMessage worked in safe mode, but still doesn't work when you restart in "normal" mode, stop here and post your results.
    Step 11
    Reset the NVRAM.
    Step 12
    Reinstall OS X.
    Step 13
If none of the above steps resolves the issue, make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store, or contact Apple Support.

  • Imessage won't activate

My Imessage, and facetime, keeps saying that it is waiting for activation. I have reset the phone, turned it on and off, and it does not appear that anything is working to reactivate it. I'm currently out of the country with my phone number inactive (however it has been working just fine over wifi with no problems for the last three months). It also does not activate when using apple id either. Please help!

    HI Friend,
Check your Apple ID credentials. For iMessage and FaceTime, choose for your email account instead of your mobile number.

  • Dictating written messages in iMessage, Viber, WhatsApp.

Dictation: the ability to dictate written messages (i. e. not sound files!) in iMessage, Viber, WhatsApp come and go for no apparent reason. The button alternates between grey=inactive and black=active.  Why? What can be done to correct this?
This occurs on both an iPhone 5 and an Iphone 4S who both run the latest IOS 8.1.

Ok, which phone is showing this issue? Your phone or the company phone? When you open the iMessegas app, is it all blank or are past messages there?
If it's the company phone, I would suspect that they are monitoring the messages from a remote source. As I was trying to get at with the same AppleID on both phones. It's possible that they have that AppleID on that phone on another device. Such as a Mac computer. When I am home, I normally use my Mac Mini to send/receive messages. Most of the time my phone doesn't do anything. But the messages are synced up. If I don't have the iMessage window open on my Mac Mini and a message comes in, both the Mac Mini and phone will alert me. The message will be on the display of the phone in the lock screen. I would then open the window on the Mac Mini, then a few seconds later the message is gone off of the lock screen. Because it knew that I read it on another device.
If you know the password for the company's phone AppleID. I would change it, see if any one says anything. :-)
Heck, if it's your personal phone. Change the password for your AppleID as well.
    KOT

  • Why don't the messages I send in iMessage synchronize across devices?

I've tried to find something about this for a while, but everything seems to be about incoming messages. Why do my outgoing messages not show up across all my devices? I see all my incoming messages without any issues.

    Hi,
That may depend on what Send And Receive IDs on other devices are actually Active and which ID you are actually Sending from.
    For instance
The iPhone can have a situation where the Send and Receive List should be two item but the iPhone Number itself is actually greyed out but UNticked.
It is supposed to be unchangeable by the user (Greyed out) but it is supposed to be active.
This will mean the iPhone will not get iMessages sent to it's iPhone Number.
It Should get the Apple ID sync versions which should include copies of iMessages you have sent from other devices - however it does then depend if the iPhone Number has been inactive long enough to be de-registered.
If this has happened delete the Apple ID from the Messages setting on the iPhone.
then place the iPhone in Airplane Mode for a couple of Minutes (to break with server)
When going Back to the Settings > Messages make sure the iPhone Number verifies before adding the Apple ID.
Once you have added the Apple ID accept the pop ups as they Appear on the Mac so that the iPhone Number is in that version's Send and Receive spots.

  • TS4268 How to use iMessage with 1 apple idea across 3 devices (iMac, 2 iPads)?

I am using iMessage across 3 devices with 1 apple id. This has worked sofar. Currently the iPad 3 refuses to accept the apple I'd. How can I solve this?

    Dear AnaMusic,
Actually it did not solve my problem. But I probably did not explain it correctly. I want all my devices to get the same messages. At home I have an Imac and an Ipad and then i use one ipad at work. They were set up with one Apple Id and used to work perfectly on that id. However suddenly the Ipad at work rejected the apple id  and I thus do not get any messages. The Imac also stays inactive. I have checked the apple id and nothing is wrong. It all works well. Except imessage no longer functions. Any suggestions?

  • Can't sign in on iMessage and FaceTime after upgrading to ML

After doing a clean install of ML, I can't login anymore to iMessage and FaceTime. I'm correctly login to iTunes, AppStore and on my iPhone iMessage works good.
The error is "Il server ha rilevato un errore durante l'elaborazione della registrazione. Riprova pi tardi"
    or in english
"The server encountered an error processing registration. Please try again later."
The problem is in ML because with Snow Leopard I hadn't a single problems. I'm on iMac 21.5'' late 2009.
    Thanks

it didn't work for me. instead, it created more problem.
inexplicably, now i have duplicate inactive imessage account which i don't know how to remove!
instead of looking for ways to activate the imessage & factime, now need to fix another thing...
another thing which i tried reading the thread was to log in using safe mode. it didn't help either. same "The server encountered an error processing registration. Please try again later." problem. it was too laggy and had to force a shut down. rechecked disk permission and found a host of permission problems.
    sigh...
    more problems....
apple support is closed for holiday...

  • Does an imessage recipient get the message instantly?

I'm considering to buy an iPhone 5s for imessaging and facetiming with my girlfriend.
Some things are not clear to me about iMessage. My girlfriend thought iMessage works even without internet, but I read that it needs data or wifi, right?
In case cellular data is turned off, but wifi is on, with android, after some time of inactivity the wi-fi is disconnected. Is this the same with iPhone?
If it is the same, what happens when I try to iMessage my girlfriend who has only wi-fi on, but her wi-fi connection is disconnected?
In all the different cases, would my girlfriend get my messages always instantly, like text messages?
    Thank you!

iMessage requires a data connection - WiFI or cellular.

When cellular data is disabled in iPhone settings, WiFi remains active indefinitely.
If it is the same, what happens when I try to iMessage my girlfriend who has only wi-fi on, but her wi-fi connection is disconnected?
Not sure what you mean.  If her WiFi is disconnected, how can it be "on"?  If she has no WiFi or cell data connection, no iMessages can be received.

  • Feature Request: Manually Send as SMS when iMessage is unavailable, or use better logic when choosing

I understand that when I send an iMessage to a contact from the messages app, it will send a text message eventually if the contact has no data service or wifi available. The problem I have with this is the timeliness. It can take anywhere from 20 seconds to 5 minutes to finally "realize" that contact has no data service and this delay is unacceptable for time sensitive messages.
I also understand that the messages app will send subsequent messages as text messages/sms because it already knows that the contact currently does not data. But... after a period of inactivity (of about 30 min?) the app defaults back to iMessage for that contact again, and if they still have no data when you send another message, it has to once again go through the process of "realizing" that they have no data/wifi connection. Even if I use the "send as text message" option by holding down on the undelivered iMessage, the app still won't send subsequent messages as text/sms until it goes through the process of "realizing" there's no data connection on their end.
A large number of people that I communicate with in the messages app have sporadic data access because they have no cellular data plan and they can only use iMessage when they're in a location that has wifi... and so if a message is taking a while to deliver, 90% of the time it's because they don't have data or wifi and it ends up sending as text message a few minutes later. What I'd like to do is speed this process up and this could be done two ways:
The Messages app should know that if I use the "send as text message" option on an iMessage that hasn't yet been delievered, it should send the next message as a text message/sms as well.
If I receive an SMS from a contact (who has iMessage only sometimes), it should default that I send an SMS back, instead of trying to iMessage first.
I don't want to simply "turn imessage off" and opt for only sms because then I can't have the benefits of iMessage with anyone of my other iMessage contact! (status visibility for messages - delivered, read, typing... etc.)
Apple, please put the "instant" back in "instant messaging!

I don't know why you posted this to a user-to-user technical support forum that Apple does not read or respond in. You might try http://apple.com/feedback. That won't respond either, but at least Apple will read it.
