IMessage is on but my text keeps saying text messege not I message

My iMessage is on but when I send a message it says it is a text message instead of an iMessage. I can't see if it was sent or read because of this. Can someone please help?

Assuming your iMessage is on (as you say it is), then to be sent as an iMessage, these two conditions must be met:
1.  You must either send it from a WiFi or your cellular carrier must specifically support iMessage (many do not).
2.  The recipient must have an Apple device, have iMessage turned on, and either be in a WiFi coverage or be using a cellular carrier that supports iMessage.
