"iMessage needs to be enabled to send this message?

What does "iMessage needs to be enabled to send this message" mean?  I can't get my messages to send and when I try that pops up. What is it and how can I fix it?

I have a similar problem as the OP, I wished to disable iMessage just to avoid the complications of having two messaging systems. Also, I never use data and always keep it off in order to save battery. Third, I noticed that when using iMessage, sometimes others' messages to me reach me late, i.e. they would send it at 3 pm and I would receive it at 6 pm when I turned on my wi-fi (remember, I have data off always). For these reasons I chose to completely disable imessage.
However, for one of my contacts, I noticed that the "send" button was still blue, rather than green (as you know, green is for ordinary SMS while blue is for iMessage). When I try to send this person a text, I naturally get the "imessage needs to be enabled to send this message". I tried the solutions in this thread, but none of them worked.
However, I managed to find a workaround. First, I turned on iMessage, then I turned on "send as SMS if imessage not available" in the settings. Then, I disconnected my wifi and data so that imessage would not be available, then I tried to send an iMessage to the person in question (the one with the button stuck on blue). This time I did NOT get the error message, but the iMessage tried to send anyways, getting stuck when the bar was around 85% complete. Then, I pressed on the speech bubble being sent, and manually chose "send as text message"). Voila! the button suddenly turned green, and now I can send regular texts to that person again!

@Dmitriy Buldakov, have you found the solution to the issue yet? I have the same problem, no option to turn on MMS in my iPhone settings. I checked the settings on my friend's iPhone, which has the same iOS version as me (8.1.1), and the option is there. It's really annoying...

SMS is a cellular carrier function.  Contact your cellular carrier and make sure you are correctly set up with an SMS plan.

  • IMessage needs to be enabled...

From photo album I hit select and chose 3 pictures then I hit the box with the up arrow in the bottom left hand corner and hit Message. I type in the recipient and hit send but I get an error message that says: Cannot Send Message, iMessage needs to be enabled to send this message.
The thing is iMessage is enabled and so is mms. Also this shouldn't be going threw as an iMessage as it's being sent to a regular phone. I've disabled and re-enabled iMessage but it still wont go threw.
The reason I am trying to send pictures this way it because I can't select more than one at a time as for the other way it's one at a time.

    Hi,
The first run of Messages will ask you to enter an Apple ID to "register' with iMessages.
If you do not do this but open the App and look in Preferences > Accounts then you will see the iMessages account and the Bonjour Account which will not be activated.
Neither of these two account can be deleted. (even if not being used)
If you then press the + icon to add you will get the choices you posted.
To iMessage you need to "register" and Apple ID with the iMessages service.
As Diane then points out you can link this to your iPhone number.
This "syncs" (Displays on all devices) the various iMessages sent to either iPhone or Apple ID
You can then chose  on both iPhone or Mac version how or which ID/Number is going to be used to "Start the conversations from"
I have my Mac version set to start from my Apple ID and the iPhone from it's number.
At this moment the Mac version cannot send SMS text messages to an iPhone.
This is apparently coming with iOS 8 and OS 10.10 (Yosemite)
An AIM account can send SMS Messages but only to a limited number of USA based phone users on these carriers.
(Basically you add a phone number with country code +1 as a Buddy to your List)
Mocked up number  (It not really an auto responder although you do get sent back and Error message about it not being valid)

  • Every site I visit via Firefox is distorted.Including your homesite. I had to use IE to send this message.

Earlier today,Monday, I started experiencing problems with FireFox, which I use primarily. What happened was that every site I visited, starting about 6:00pm CST, was distorted visually and structurally. Including your homepage and other sections of your site.
It appeared as though someone had been tampering with your browsers coding with reference to the ability to properly display web pages.Your site in particular was stripped of any images, videos or coloration. Just a bare bones page of disjointed text showed.I had to open IE 8 to get to your site to send this message as I could not do it in Firefox.
I verified the fact that it's not a cacheing issue. Plus I did 2 un/reinstalls of Firefox, which didn't help.
I love FireFox which is why I felt I should bring this to your attention. I will keep using IE for now and keep checking back with FireFox hoping that the problem has been identified and corrected.
Thank you for your hard work in creating a truly superior browser that you give away, and I wish you all the best.
    Sincerely,
    Jerry Johnson

    Hello,
Try disabling graphics hardware acceleration. Since this feature was added to Firefox, it has gradually improved, but there still are a few glitches.
You might need to restart Firefox in order for this to take effect, so save all work first (e.g., mail you are composing, online documents you're editing, etc.).
    Then perform these steps:
*Click the orange Firefox button at the top left, then select the "Options" button, or, if there is no Firefox button at the top, go to Tools > Options.
*In the Firefox options window click the ''Advanced'' tab, then select "General".
*In the settings list, you should find the ''Use hardware acceleration when available'' checkbox. Uncheck this checkbox.
*Now, restart Firefox and see if the problems persist.
Additionally, please check for updates for your graphics driver by following the steps mentioned in the following Knowledge base articles:
    * [[Troubleshoot extensions, themes and hardware acceleration issues to solve common Firefox problems]]
    * [[Upgrade your graphics drivers to use hardware acceleration and WebGL]]
Did this fix your problems? Please report back to us!
    Thank you.

Everywhere that I've checked it is not possible to do this. I would like to even do this using the vkb. I hate having to stretch my thumb all the way up just to send a message. It's messaging, not a report or email. Seems backwards. Hopefully some day Apple can add this option.

    Hi babychriss,
Thanks for visiting Apple Support Communities.
There are several possible reasons why a message might not send. I'd recommend starting with the troubleshooting steps in this article:
