IMessage on computer

When I send and iMessage from my computer it sends through my email. How do I get it so that people receive them from my phone number instead?

Greetings taylorr.raee,
Welcome to the Apple Support Communities!
I understand that when you send from Messages on your Mac, the sent messages are going out from your Apple ID and not your phone number. In this situation, I would recommend reading over the attached article to ensure that the settings are correct on your Mac.

  • Sync all iMessages with computer, iPhone and iPad

I just installed iMessage BETA on my Mac  OSX 10.7.4    How can I change the setting so that when I send from either my Mac, iPhone or iPad they all SYNC from the same place.  I send iMessages to friends and they say that they are getting them from 3 different place, 2 of my emails or my phone.  If I send from my computer their replies only come to my computer.  I would like to send 1 message (either from computer, iPhone or iPad) and have it come form ONE address and be on ALL my devices and when a person responds have it be on ALL devices.
    Please instruct.

On your mac log into Messages with the Apple id/email address you're using. Make sure in preferences that this is the account that's enabled and appears as the "address you can be reached at".
On your phone in Settings at Messages make sure iMessage is 'on". At "Receive At" enter and make sure the same Apple id/email address that you used on your mac is entered. You should then see below the Apple id "you can be reached for messages at " your phone number ( entered automatically ) and your email address. Below this is Caller id you will see your phone number and email address here. I have my phone number checked because not everyone I text will have my email address and thus would not recognize that it's from me. All my messages sync between my ipad, mac, and phone so I've left it this way with no issues.
On your ipad in Settings at Messages make sure that the "receive at" field shows your Apple id/email address that you've used and that it shows both in the Apple ID field and below at the "you can be reached for messages at" field.
On my mac, since I have two email, Apple id accounts I have to make sure that the correct one is selected for the Messages account. Initially the wrong one was checked causing a few problems. As long as you're using the same email address on each device and your phone shows you can be reached at two addresses - phone number and email you should be good to go.

  • Change user name to iMessage from computer???

    Hello,
I am new to the Mac world, so please be kind. I was updating all of my information (apple username, password, security question, etc.), when I received an iMessage on my computer. When I hit the magical "submit" button, it signed me off, and now I cannot get back on. I clicked on the "?" key, which took me to a not so help page. The page addressed that this is a problem, but the answer isn't so clear and reads, "
Update this if the name you use to log in has changed since you set up an account.
You can change your user name on the website for the service provider of your account."
Having Verizon as a service provider, I went to their website. However, when I explored, the website didn't have what I was looking for.
If someone knows how to update my username and password, I would greatly appreciate it.
    Thanks!
    Sarah Mac

Open the Contacts app. List All Contacts and find the email address used by iMessage. Select the email address and tap the Edit button in the top right corner. Add your name to the top two lines. Tap Done.

    Hi,
I notice you have linked to the Apple Document about the first four error messages that the app can produce.
Do you see an error message ?
As Eric says what have you tried so far ?
If you haven't already open the Font Book and check the AppleGothic font (it is near the bottom when viewed in this app and appears as one word).
Check it validates (File Menu) is not duplicated and is enabled (not Disabled).

    Hello Srm8,
It sounds like you are not getting your iMessages to come to your computer. I recommend checking the You can be reached for messages at: settings in the messges preferences with this info:
Messages (Mountain Lion): Fix iMessage issues
    http://support.apple.com/kb/PH12065
List all of the email addresses in the “You can be reached for messages at” list. You can find this list by choosing Messages > Preferences, and then selecting iMessage in the Accounts pane.Check your email at all addresses marked as “Validating.” Click the Verify Now link in the verification emails you receive.
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.
    Cheers,

  • HT5395 Is there a way to set a password for iMessage?

Is there a way to set a password for iMessage on computer instead of it logging in automatically? Other people use my computer and I do not want them to have access to my imessages.
    Thanks

    Hi,
It would be best if you set them up with their own Mac User account and changed your Login password.
You could use the Sign Out button each time you closed the app.
This would still show the Apple ID next time the app was started and if this is a common Apple ID  they could Sign in  again.
You could open Keychain Access and remove the Auth Token but this would also be recreated when they started Messages and re-signed in the iMessages account.
With the AIM, Jabber and Yahoo Accounts  it is possible not to enter the password when creating the account and Unticking the "Save this Password to the Keychain" each time you sign those accounts in.
Much less possible with the iMessages account.

  • Yosemite iMessage 'not delivered'

Logged in to iMessage on my Mac Pro.
Added text forwarding from iPhone. - put in code
Go to send text message and it says "not delivered"
    restarted router.
    restared imessage
    restarted computer
    Still no go. Any ideas?

After doing what blueno suggested I did have to reboot.  I then had to provide my password lots of times when I logged in.  That still didn't work so I logged out of my iCloud account in Message and logged back in, repaired, and it worked!
    This is what I did:
    1) Open Key Chain Access ( go to Applications>Utilities)
    2) Select Login at the top left side under Keychains
    3) Select All Items on the lower left side under Category
    4) Search for entries of IDS.
    5) Highlight and delete all entries that has IDS.
    6) Search for entries of FaceTime
    7) Highlight and delete all entries of FaceTime
    8) Search for entries of Messages (I also found entries containing Message (singular, not plural), but didn't delete these.)
    9) Highlight and delete all entries of Messages
    10) Reboot!
    11) Log back in and when requested log back into iCloud account (I got asked for the password multiple times)
    12) Log out of iCloud account in iMessage (Not sure if this is needed)
    13) Log back into iCloud account in iMessage.
    14) On iPhone in Settings/Messages/Text Message Forwarding turn off forwarding to my iMac.
    15) Turn Text Message Forwarding back on for my iMac (re-pairs and I entered the new number)
    16) Could send text messages from my iMac!!!!!

  • IPod Touch 5Gen movie file extension is MOV.mov - why?

I noticed when I recorded a movie today, the file extension was .MOV.mov  . I've never seen this before. I can watch it fine.
When I record using my iPad 2, the movies just have .MOV as the file extension.
Is this a glitch and if so, how to fix it? ( I'm wondering if people who I send the recording to will be able to view it.)
    Thanks.

No, I didn't. I sent the movies to my computer via text (imessage).
I just decided to sync/upload them via iPhoto and the file extension is now .MOV
Have you any idea what changes it when it's sent via imessage on device to imessage on computer?

  • Can receive but not send messages

Can anyone help me? My imessage for Mac was working great yesterday then all the sudden I can't send messages. I tried sending messages to someone's email account and to a phone number. I am logged in with my Apple ID and also with my email address through AIM. However, I can get messages, but when I send, I get that red exclamation mark. So I click on it to resend and it still won't send.
I've tried restarting iMessage, my computer, changing my passwords, closing the conversation... not sure what else to try. I'm running OSX 10.8.3.
    Any suggestions?!

    hi,
Based on the email , the three other threads that have other bits of info in them I  would also try a PRAM reset.
    Shut down the computer.
Restart it holding down Apple/CMD ( or ⌘)+ALT( ⌥)+P+R Keys until you have heard three Start Up Bongs.
