IMessage on iPad:  I thought we could message non-iDevices with iOS6

I seem to remember the keynote at WWDC12 this year showing off iOS6 including a segment describing the ability for iPads to message non-iDevices.  Basically out of network messaging woot having to use your phone all the time.  I think it had to do with tightly synchronizing your ipad iMessage account with your iPhone and therefore allowing ipad access to the standard SMS system (via the iPhone settings?)
Does anyone else remember that, or am I confusing some other features?
Thanks.

You've mis-remembered. iMessage is iOS only.
iMessages sent to the phone number (rather than AppleID) of an iOS device will now appear on WiFi only iOS devices and Macs. Maybe that's what you're thinking of?
