IMessage Overseas Logistics
My boyfriend is going to Shanghai for work for a month, and we are trying to straighten out how iMessages between our iPhones (him=5, me=4S) will work best -- neither of us have tested this outside the US so I'm hoping for someone with the same kind of experience to tell me if I have this straight:
He's planning to turn Airplane Mode plus WiFi on, since Verizon apparently doesn't deal well with Chinese coverage (according to his co-workers who have already been there, although I find that hard to believe in "TechCentral" Shanghai) so he isn't planning on buying an international package as he'll be busy teaching in a plant all day anyway.
His hotel is supposed to have good wifi. We tested iMessage and FaceTime here in the States already with him in Airplane mode and on wifi, while I was on wifi, and of course it worked just fine like it was supposed to, so we should be able to be in touch when I'm at home and he's in the hotel.
Here's where I start having questions:
1. If, here in the States, I message him and he's not around wifi while he's at work, will it give me a "not sent" error message, or will it wait to go through until he's back in the hotel on wifi?
2. Conversely, if he sends me an iMessage and I'm out and about, will it actually send to me even if I'M not also on wifi?
Obviously I have a data plan (AT&T) and messaging, I'm just wondering if one iMessage is sent out over wifi with Airplane mode enabled, does it absolutely require the other party to also be on wifi? Clearly iMessages send all the time here in the States using data plans while away from wifi, but I'm interested in what it does if the sending party has NO cellular data enabled while the receiving party does.
I think I'm overthinking this and it doesn't matter which party is on wifi and which is on celldata as long as both parties have SOME kind of continuous data-transmitting connection, but am hoping for confirmation from someone who's been through this.
Also if you have any international travellers' iPhone tips or pitfalls to share, it would be much appreciated.
1. You'll probably get the Not sent message.
2. You don't have to be on WiFi. Cellular data will work just as well.
Your boyfriend's Verizon iPhone 5 is a completely unlocked phone. He has the option of getting a local SIM. He may be able to find something that gives him a better deal on data.

Sent iMessage to iMessage oversea's but the recipients phone is receiving it as an Email
Im sending an iMessage to someone in Italy that also has an iPhone with iMessage (turned on) and they are telling me that it is coming in as an Email. Does anyone know why?
The server involved sends a signal to your device to indicate it didn't go through as an iMessage, but the server actually was able to push it through after the signal was sent to your device. It just doesn't bother to update you and correct the error.

Is imessage on iphone is free because my provider charges me for imessage
Question : is imessage is free to any iphone user overseas because my provider charges me for international text messaging I am confused and my provider push me to add international text message in my account.
I live in Hong Kong. The messaging itself is free if the person your messaging also has got iMessage no matter where he lives. But my provider charges me for activation, if they can't connect to the iMessage overseas server etc. And this doesn't happen only once, so be careful of hidden charges.

IMessage will not activate - receive strange message
Ok, currently my iMessage will not work properly. It has been working previously hence this is very frustrating.
I have iPhone 4s A1387 model and I am running IOS6.1.1. I am based in the UK.
This problem may have happened when i updated the software or possibly when I was last overseas. Before that I have successfully used imessage overseas and have had no problems.
I have tried many things from the forums - resetting, resetting network, etc - but this will not activate
Here is the problem:
After resetting I went to General - Imessage
I turned it back on
It said 'Waiting for Activation'
I pressed the Use your Apple ID for iMessage
My Apple ID was displayed and I put in my password
Then I got the message
"iMessage Activation
Could not sign in. Please check your network connection and try again"
The network connection is fine. It is working with everything else.
I really don't know what to do ????
Any help would be very nicely received! You may have a firewall in your router which is blocking certain ports which iMessage uses. In particular TCP port 5223. IMessage also uses ports 80 and 443 but these probably aren't blocked.

I bought an iPhone while overseas, but I'm back living in the states now. It seems that FaceTime and iMessage is not enabled on it. How do I get it to work now that I'm back in the states?
I did buy it from someone in Jordan. So they might have got it from KSA, or UAE, or it even might be the same rules in Jordan. I don't think the imessage works even, every time someone sends me a message from their ipad it says "Not delivered". Maybe I am wrong?

if I'm overseas, and I use iMessage not connected to wifi, and I'm messaging someone who has an iPhone as well with ios 7, will get charged SMS/mms fees?
No, but cellular data will be used at whatever international roaming rate you carrier charges for data in whatever country.
Exchanging iMessages requires the same thing as email - an available internet connection. SMS/MMS is completely separate from iMessage. -
I am trying to create a new account but every time I put in my billing information and numbers, the same screen pops up with, in red "For assistance contact iTunes Support". I am currently overseas and want my imessage to work correctly
to contact iTunes store support, follow these steps:
1. Go to expresslane.apple.com
2. select 'itunes' and then 'itunes store'
3. select a topic and a subject
4. click 'continue' and then 'email'
5. fill out the form and explain your situation
6. they will respond within 24 hours usually
Good luck -
I recently went overseas for a holiday. While away and since being home I have not been able to imessage him. Why? We both have the most recent software.
I would try shutting off iMessages and Facetime then re-activating them one at a time. See if that helps.

Using iMessaging vs. Texting Overseas
Looking for some help with the functionality of iMessaging. Verizon or the Apple Store hasn't been able to really answer my question with confidence. When I have asked the question I get "it should work that way" answer.
I am traveling to Europe with my Verizon 4S phone - I will have a SIM card for phone calls, but am not planning on buying a data package plan due to the expense. I plan on using wi-fi when available.
My question is this... I know one of the benefits is that the iMessage feature sends a text as a iMessage when I "text" anyone using another iPhone (with the latest iOS software update) as long as I am connected to a 3G or wi-fi network. The benefit is that these messages don't go against your text plan. So when I don't have a data plan overseas, a normal text will cost 50 cents per text. If I am on a wi-fi network overseas and text another iPhone user, will it still go through as an iMessage so I won't get charged for it?
Thanks.Texting other iPhones with iMessage using WiFi will NOT be charged as SMS or data. However, if it goes via cell network (3G, Edge, etc.), there will be data charges which will be VERY expensive if you have no prepaid data plan. Also, some messages will go as SMS if iMeasage doesn't connect properly. To be safe:
1. Disable cell data or data roaming in settings and send/receive when using WiFi only.
2. Disable "send as SMS" to prevent iMessage from switching to SMS if the connection is bad. Some messages may not go through and this has no effect on receiving SMS or with non- iPhones.
Note that SMS text does NOT use cell data - it goes over the voice channel - though you get charged exta. MMS media does use cell data and will be very expensive. Sending pictures by iMeasage over WiFi is free but using 3G will be as expensive as MMS IF YOU DON'T HAVE A DATA PLAN. -
I've tried the listed troubleshooting procedures to activate Facetime and iMessage, but no luck. Are there any other options? If it helps, I'm currently overseas and only using WiFi to connect.
lovethoseleaves,
Oh no! I am saddened to hear that you are having troubles with your MMS pictures. I know that this can be an important thing to be able to do. I appreciate you working with us to get this matter resolved as well. I see that you have spent time working with us, and I know that can also be frustrating. There are a few things we can check though. Are these to any specific numbers or all? A factory reset certainly should've resolved this. We can check into the account set up as well for that if need be. Please share any additional details that you can think of. Thanks.

We both own iphone 4S's. I just don't want to subscribe to an international texting plan for her, if I know that imessage will deliver them for free. Can anyone enlighten me?
Yes, iMessage is free between iOS devices and Macs worldwide.
Be aware, that if for some reason iMessage is unavailable, it will send it as an SMS if you have that option turned on in Settings > Messages -
With iMessage does the receiver have to be on wireless/wifi/3G to receive the message?
I'm usually very savy when it comes to IT but NOT where iMessage is concerned.
I was told about iMessage it was because I was txting a friend overseas and they said "oooo you're on iPhone because the message is blue". I had no idea what they were talking so I continued SMSing (green) and they were obviously iMessaging me because theirs was blue.
Ok so now that my partner has an iPhone, it seems that unless we're both on wifi (we don't have a data plan so only on our wifi at our respective homes) that it will send the text as a (green) SMS. We both have to be on our wireless to be able to use iMessage (blue).
But I know this has not been the case before. I.e. one could be one wireless and send an iMessage but the receiver might not be so therefore would just reply as an SMS.
What is the right thing?????
Also it appears that iMessages sent won't go thru as an SMS if a person is overseas and doesn't have data roaming on???
Confused.comiMessage requires a data connection. That data connection can be either Wifi or 3G.

I have signed out of Itunes and signed back in, changed my passwords, turned it on and off airplane mode, restarted it, and everything! Please help!!!
Hi
Thanks for the replies.
Sorry I did mean to say Hub I know about the Hub working without being logged in its just that:
A) when I contacted BT (last Friday) they said that the order had not completed yet.
B) Because of logistics I needed to set up the wifi as soon as I could (its a long story) and something told me to get registered before I tried the Hub in case I had a problem getting connected.
I have tried to contact BT again today and have been on "HOLD" for at least 2 hours finally when I got speak to someone I was told he would have to connect me to a colleague then put me on "HOLD" for 15 minutes then when I was connected to his colleague after telling him all the problems I was cut of I thought that the guy would have had the decency to phone me back but NO so I had to go through all the rigmarole of waiting to try and speak to someone again after being on "HOLD" for 45 minutes I spoke to a lady who said that the problem had been passed to the technical team and that the gentleman I spoke to on Friday should have told me 2 working days and not 48 hours.
The nice Lady said that I should hear something tomorrow (Tuesday) personally I am not taking any bets on it.
Why do these company's like BT promise the Earth and deliver nothing if some one from BT had the decency to return a call and say sorry the problem is being looked into I could have accepted that.
Had a problem with BT in the past when a unknown trailer became dislodged from the towing vehicle the trailer then felled the Telegraph pole carrying our line when we contacted BT to report the "fault" they said they would run a check on the line, they then said the line was working fine and that there was no problem???
Had to wait 28 days for the pole to be replaced.
DS I will go with your idea and send the details to the modarators.
