IMessage phone number grayed out

Hello,
My phone number is grayed out in iMessage. I've restarted my phone and reset the network settings, etc. I've also logged out of iMessage and back it but it's still grayed out. The same thing happens with FaceTime.
Thoughts.

Not sure what you mean by "it won't let me send with my number using iMessage"?
Again, that is how it looks normally:
The first number you see listed above is the number of the iPhone that iMessages is set up on. The second number is another iPhone number that I manually entered.
You can see that the first number is greyed out (as it should be).
Does your number have a check mark next to it?
If not, then that is the issue, not that it is greyed out.
If the number does not have a check mark next to it, then sign out of iMessage by clicking on your Apple ID at the top of the screen under Settings>iMessages, and then sign back in again. Do the same with FaceTime if that is the issue there.
Cheers,
GB

  • Phone number grayed out but has a check mark next to it?

Ever since I updated to iOS 8, I've had this problem with my iMessages were when I go to Settings > Messages > Send & Receive I notice that my phone number is grayed out and has a check mark next to it, but with my email address which I use for iCloud, it has a check mark next to it and it isn't grayed out like my phone number. I've already tried resetting my network to get my phone number to ungray but that didn't work.
So far from what I've seen a lot of people have been having this problem. Has anyone found the right way to fix it? I'm also having this issue with my Facetiming too. Thank you.
    iPhone 5c, iOS 8.

I actually have an ___(at)att.net email address. I've never had any problems with that before with anything so I'm not sure.
Ok, I just did what you suggested. I signed out for both, restarted my phone using the home and on/off button, then signed back in. Now it's at a step where it says the following:
    iMessage
People will message you using your email address. What would you like to use?
Then it says my phone number and my email. My phone number is checked and grayed out still and I can tap on my email to check it off or check it off. What should I do at this step? Not check my email address?

  • Why is my phone number grayed out in Facetime?

I dont get what happened with iOS6... but apparently I cannot use my phone number for facetime? As it is grayed out and I cannot check it off as the address to receive Facetime...
Also... I am now showing up in peoples phones as 2 contacts... one with my phone number and one with my email address... Why did this happen? how do i merge them?

Actually... I clearly know how to use the software... ive only had 2 iphones, 3 ipads, and a macbook..
I was simply asking why it is grayed out...
and why other people have me as 2 different cotnacts in their phones now... One my phone number, and a second contact as my email address... why dont they have me in one... and NO smartass they did not add me as a second cotnact... it happened on its own...
By chance, are you running a Mac with Mountain Lion OSX 10.8.2?  If so, I noticed something similar.... I now have my phone number and email address for use in Facetime and Messages.  Maybe your user friends have not upgraded to iOS6, because both addresses only show in iOS I believe.  iOS 5 only shows one or the other address.

I would recommend taking a look at the troubleshooting steps found in the article below.

If your phone number isn't listed on an iPod touch or iPad, follow these steps:
Update to the latest version of iOS.
Verify that you're using the same Apple ID that you're using on your iPhone.
On your iPad or iPod touch, sign out of your Apple ID in the following locations:
Settings > Messages > Send & Receive. Tap your Apple ID, then tap Sign Out.
Settings > FaceTime. Tap your Apple ID, then tap Sign Out.
Sign in to your Apple ID with FaceTime and iMessage.
If your phone number still isn't listed, follow these steps:
Sign out of your Apple ID on all iOS devices, including your iPhone, in the following locations:
Settings > Messages > Send & Receive. Tap your Apple ID, then tap Sign Out.
Settings > FaceTime. Tap your Apple ID, then tap Sign Out.
Sign in to your Apple ID on your iPhone.
When activation is complete, your Apple ID and all verified email addresses should be visible in Settings > Messages > Receive At and Settings > FaceTime.
Sign in to your Apple ID on your other iOS devices.

  • How do I change the iMessage phone number on my iPad.

    Hello:
I've searched and can't find this exact problem in any other thread. How do I change the iMessage phone nubmer on my iPad. It is NOT the same as my iTunes phone number.
My wife and I share an AppleID. When I updated my iPad to iOS6 her phone number became my iMessage phone number. Now, I get all her iMessages between her and her contacts and not my own. The email is still my iTunes account email.

If you go to General>Messages>ReceiveAt and then add an additional Apple ID, if you dont have an other Apple ID, you will have to create a new one. Also, if you dont want to receive your current messages, you can remove the number/Apple ID, but only if you have 2 or more Receiving accounts. (including your current) If you dont want to use iMessage at all, just simply switch iMessage from "On" to "Off"
    Hope this helped,

    Hi Mishie,
    Welcome to the community.
have you by chance tried some of the basics, such as restarting the handset and removing the SIM and placing it back in again?
If you have and seem to have the same issue, you could try clearing the Phone dialer app.
    Menu > Settings > apps > All > Phone > Clear Data.
let us know how you get on.

  • IMessage (phone number) not an option in messages accounts

I can't seem to get Messages on my mac to link to my phone number to send and receive iMessages. I have done it before and it was quite simple but now when I try to add it, there's not even an option in my accounts pane for adding a phone number. I have signed in and out on my phone and computer and searched for an answer or similar problem but haven't seen much. HELP! Below is a screenshot of what my messages/preferences/accounts looks like. I can't figure out where on here to set up my phone number. Thanks in advance for any help!

Thanks! That sort of helped. I had already look at this and done the iMessage steps but I realized I was signed in to iMessage with the right info but not FaceTime.
Apple wont let you change your apple ID so I have an icloud email and an apple ID email and it gets confusing. THANKS!

  • Unable to connect imessage phone number

After upgrading to iOS 8.0.2 the iMessage stopped working through my phone number. It only works with email addresses.  I´ve done literally everything except doing a full reset, which by the way I will not engage. To list a few things I´ve done in order to reestablish the full service: 1) Apple ID settings check up (perfect); 2) Network setting reset (check); 3) remove sim card and reset (check); 4) make sure I can send international sms (check); 5) make sure my phone number is exactly as the data in Apple iD (check); 6) Time in my phone (check).  Honestly I tend to think is the iOS that caused this mess.
    Some help, pleaseeee.

    Hi there suarez_otaola,
It looks like you have tried a few things already, but one thing I'm not seeing on your list is signing out of iMessage and then back in. The process is outlined below.
    iOS: Troubleshooting Messages
If you aren't receiving iMessages across all iOS devices
Go to Settings > Messages > Send & Receive on each iOS device and make sure that you signed in with your Apple ID. You must use the same Apple ID on each device.
Go to Settings > Messages > Send & Receive > You Can Be Reached By iMessage At and make sure that you selected each phone number and email address you want to use with iMessage.
If you linked a phone number to your Apple ID with iMessage and the phone number hasn't appeared, followthese steps.
Sign out of your Apple ID in Settings > Messages > Send & Receive and Settings > FaceTime on all devices.
If you're linking a phone number to an Apple ID, sign in to iMessage on your iPhone first. Then sign in to the rest of your device one by one with iMessage and FaceTime.

  • Restore to new iPad- iMessage phone number is wrong

I lost my  wifes iPad 1 to the band of grey. Purchased anew iPad 4 for me, restored my iPad 2 with the iPad 1 backup .everything worked except that the phone number is not updated. How do I change the number in iMessage?

    Hey michaelfromgreenwood,
Thanks for the question. The phone number that appears in iMessage settings is going to depend on an iPhone that is associated with your Apple ID. For more information, see this article:

Phone number missing on iPad or iPod touch

    1. Update to the latest version of iOS.
    2. Verify that you're using the same Apple ID that you are using on your iPhone.
    3. On your iPad or iPod touch, sign out of your Apple ID in the following locations:

              - Settings > FaceTime. Tap your Apple ID, then tap Sign Out.
    4. Sign in to your Apple ID with FaceTime and iMessage.
If your phone number is still not listed, follow these steps:
    1. Sign out of your Apple ID on all iOS devices, including your iPhone, in the following locations:
              - Settings > Messages > Send & Receive. Tap your Apple ID, then tap Sign Out.
              - Settings > FaceTime. Tap your Apple ID, then tap Sign Out.
    2. Sign in to your Apple ID on your iPhone.
    3. When activation is complete, your Apple ID and all verified email addresses should be visible in Settings > Messages > Receive At and also in Settings > FaceTime.
    4. Now sign in to your Apple ID on your other iOS devices.
