IMessage slider always goes to off

I have iPhone 4, iOs 5.1.1 and when I try to switch on iMessgae, it goes back to OFF immediately. I have all restrictions disabled.
And I also have another iPhone 4, iOs 5.1.1 which has iMessage enabled with same id.
Thanks

Resetting it once is sufficient. I'll never understand why people try to do something more than once with something like this.

• Slider auto goes to "Off"

I have a large HD hooked via firewire into a headless Mac Mini.
Using Airport wireless, I've been able to back up 3 portables (plus the Mini itself) to this drive.
However, I can no longer back up our Macbook Pro. Every time I attempt to choose the shared drive, the on-off slider switches automatically to the "off" position.
Any thoughts?

Unless you use a 3rd party tool to change the backup interval as well as the backup time, I don't know how you can prevent 2 or more of your Macs from running a Time Machine backup at the same time. If the users are also doing other network traffic intensive activity like watching a video or listening to streaming music, it is likely your four Mac can loose the connection to Time Capsule or your backup drive. Assuming your portables are connected to the backup drive wirelessly, the bandwidth available is even lower (54 Mbits per sec vs 100 Mbps if connected by wire to TC).
In addition, just because Apple say TC supports up to (Is it 6?) so many computers backing up to it doesn't mean it's advisable. On a PC, I know that if I am defragging a hard disk, another disk-intensive operation (like installing a software update) would be painfully slow.
Checking if this is indeed the cause of your problem can take some work, but a simple tool can help you avoid this problem altogether. I use a free tool called Time Machine Editor..
http://timesoftware.free.fr/timemachineeditor/
which allows me to set the backup interval and time. If you use this tool to separate the backup time for each of your computers by 10 minutes, you will have 6 non-overlapping back-up periods, even for up to 6 computers to backup to the same TC with no interference from the others. This is only if Time Machine is allowed to run hourly on each computer. If you backup less frequently, you have a longer non-overlapping (only one Mac backing up to TC) backup period. e.g. If every computer on the TC backs up every 2 hours, 12 different computers each gets 10 minutes non-overlapping backup period, or 6 different computers each gets 20 minutes of non-overlapping backup.
Apple sells the hourly backup as a way to recover from user errors that completely wipes out an importance file. However, there is a price to pay for that in terms of increase usage in TC bandwidth. I've read from other users in the Time Machine forum who recommends a lower backup frequency.

• Internet always going on & off on laptop

I recently purchased a Laptop and a Linksys WRT54GS Wireless Router. I have called Linksys twice and I still am having problems with my laptop keeping an internet connection. The router is connected to my desktop which I have no problem with my internet connection at all. I am getting very aggravated with this situation. I do not know what to try next.

What adapter are you using on your laptop? A built-in wireless card or an USB card? I have a laptop with an USB adapter (300USBN) and I have the same problem. It seems to be an issue with USB ports either saving power (even when pluggged in) or the USB cycling or something ( I don't know enough about USB architecture to troubleshoot). If your wireless card is USB I would be interested in knowing if it is?
For example, my internal wireless card doesn't experience this problem.

Why does my 1st gen iPad always turns itself off and goes back to the screen. Whether I'm reading news, iBooks, etc, suddenly it goes off.

If that doesn't help, the battery may be dying and need replacement. See here (tap on Battery Replacement): http://support.apple.com/kb/index?page=servicefaq&geo=United_States&product=ipad
Alternately, might consider start saving for a new iPad. The newest iPad 6 should come out in the next few months. When it does, sellers will want to get rid of old inventory with good deals.

• Is the iPod Touch always going to backup?

Since updating to 2.0, iTunes wants to backup my iPod every time I connect. Is my iPod Touch always going to do a Backup during the sync process or is there a setting to adjust this?

This is what I do.
I created a TextEdit file and stored it on my desktop, It is two lines (commands) separated by a return. You can copy the two commands from this message to your clipboard. The two commands are:
defaults write com.apple.iTunes DeviceBackupsDisabled -bool true
defaults write com.apple.iTunes DeviceBackupsDisabled -bool false
When used in the Mac OSX application Terminal, the first line is used to turn off backups. The second turns them back on.
Once you have the TextEdit file saved in the location that you want, do the following steps.
1. Open your TextEdit file
2. Highlight the command you want. Use only one. I triple click the text with my Logitech mouse.
3. Select Edit>Copy
4. Open the application Terminal
5. Select Edit>Paste (Hit return if you don't get a new prompt.)
6. Terminal does not confirm the result of the command. You just get the same prompt as before.
7. Type exit. Terminal responds "Process Completed"
8. Quit Terminal and TextEdit You are done and ready to sync.
This takes about thirty seconds compared to the backup which in my case takes hours.
PLEASE NOTE
I use my Administrator account to do this. Never tried it with a Standard account.
If you choose to disable backups, any data saved in iPod touch applications will be lost if you have to do a restore.
I tested the no backup command a few minutes ago and it worked syncing my iTouch 1G to my iMac.
I posted this step by step incase you have never used Terminal. My apologies to the Unix geeks.
Use at your own risk.

• Music list in songs view always goes back to top...

In previous versions of iTunes, when swapping between playlists (or building them, for example), every time you went back to the music folder in the library, you get back to where you left off.
Now, it seems that if you switch out of the Music folder in iTunes 11, it "loses" its place, and always goes back to the top of the list. It's a pain to have to scroll down to where you were especially if there are several thousand songs to wade through) every time you switch in and out of the Music folder.
Is there a way to go back to where you left off, like in previous versions? I'm not sure using the column browser helps with this if you're building a playlist that spans artists and genres...

It seems to happen in all the other views as well. Very annoying. Please post if you find a solution for this!

Turn off your memory cleaner, it is worthless to your situation and does NOT clear additional memory for your device, it just wastes battery and resource, and ONLY cleans already deleted memory to a high secure government specification. Nice for the FBI, CIA, drug and p0rn dealers, worthless for you.
For low memory issues:
First thing? Check the File Free at Options > Status, what is the number at File Free?
Now, leaving the device powered ON, remove the battery of your device, hold a minute, replace and reboot.
What is the File Free now?

• My iMessage slide button is enabled, how do I fix that?

I understand the concept of iMessage. However, it sends messages
from my email to a handful of my contacts. I want to either turn off iMessage
or change my Send & Receive email to my phone number. When i go to
Settings>Messages the iMessage slide button is dull and won't allow me to slide it
to Off. I then tried changing the Send & Receive but it too is dull and won't allow me to
change it. Nothing takes places when I try to use both of these features.
iMessages currently says On, it also says "Activation Unsuccessful, Turn on iMessage and try again"
Is there anyway I can manage my iMessages through my computer?
Or is my last resort to go into the crowded Apple Store?
Thank you in Advance!
Ps- it's the same with my FaceTime. I go to manage it and its a dull color
and I can't manage it.

• Saving always goes to documents folder

Hello,
I've posted this problem before but haven't received a fix for it yet. Perhaps I'm just explaining it wrong. Simply put every time I go to save a document, instead of going to the last folder used in the program it always goes to the documents folder of the user. Also the last folder does not even show up in the drop down of the save window, only the path to the documents folder. The various programs do remember recent documents opened. But the "open file" always goes to documents, not last folder. This was not always the case, but has been for the last 6months or so and I can't seem to correct it.
I've tested the system by adding a new account and seeing if it happen there also or if it is just the one account. But the same situation exists, so it seems to be universal to this computer.
Based on previous threads this is what I've attempted so far:
Deleted in: (myhome)/Library/Preferences
com.apple.finder.plist
com.apple.sidebarlists.plist
com.apple.launchservices.plist
com.adobe.xxxx.plist
com.macromedia.xxxx.plist
ALSO Deleted : /library/caches/com.applelaunchservices-xxxx.csstore (all)
Then restarted computer. This however has not resolved the problem. I know all the work arounds of "put folder in sidebar" and what not, but that doesn't fix the problem. I want to fix this problem.
thanks
mark

I don't know what else you can do, nor why dialogs aren't working correctly. The Open and Save dialogs in most applications are now handled by Apple's Navigation Services, although developers can add some custom things to this basic arrangement. See this article:
http://developer.apple.com/documentation/Carbon/Conceptual/ProvidingNavigationDi alogs/nsxconcepts/chapter_2_section2.html
Note especially this paragraph:
"...two types of dialogs can appear—a minimal Save dialog and a full Save dialog. The minimal Save dialog, shown in Figure 1-2, is displayed the first time a user saves a document in an application. This dialog provides a text field for the user to enter a filename. Applications can optionally specify a default filename to display. The dialog has a Where pop-up menu that, by default, suggests the Documents folder for the user. The user can open the pop-up menu to choose from locations previously set in the Finder sidebar or a recently-visited location. If none of those locations are acceptable, the user can click the disclosure button to the right of the text field to access the full Save dialog."
AFAIK the user choices made are then saved to the application's plist file. A list of Recent Items is also written to the com.apple.finder.plist and to the com.apple.recentitems.plist. So if you tossed those two plist files and the application's plist file, plus the sidebar plist for good measure you should get back to the default state. You would then open a dialog, expand it to full navigation view, pick new stuff, and these changes would be written to the respective plists. If this is not happening--if the plists are not being written to--I'm afraid I don't know what else you could do.
If you've never created a test user you might do so (in System Prefs/Acconts), log in to the test user and do some opening and saving (remember you will be at the default of the simple window with the Documents as the usual default). After you've done some open and save actions see if the test user now works correctly, with your actions remembered when you go back after a logout/in. If that is the case, then there is something odd going on in your regular account.

• When i try to open a url from a search, it always goes to a random search engine, not the web page

If I do a search for something, I get the Google search fine, when I click on a link it never goes to the site, it always goes to a random search engine and sometimes freezes my computer. I created a new, alternate profile, but it does it on that one too.

If it's happening on more than one profile, it sounds like a malware redirectiing you. Try doing an antivirus scan first.

Hi shanny202.
Really strange problem you have there. I have a few questions though.
Please try again and try to make the phone as a new without restoringen with you iCloud-data or backup-data from iTunes. Maybe it is something wrong with the data (strange).
Anyway, i think you should call Apple Support or visit an Apple Store, don't forgot to make a Genius Bar reservation.

Hey Rkbethel
There are two ways to resolve this for you. For the first is go and do a Reset All Settings by going to Settings > General > Reset > Reset All Settings. It will not delete anything on your iPhone, but it will put all settings back to default. If it does not work, the next step would be to restore the iPhone back to factory settings.
