When my cellular data is turned off and SMS is turned on, Why can I not receive text messages from other iphone users? Does it have something to do with their iphone or mine?

An iMessage is similar to a standard SMS text message. However, it is transmitted via the new iMessage service in iOS 5, instead of through your wireless phone carrier. The messages application in your iPhone can send both iMessages, and SMS text messages. You can tell which is being sent, becasue iMessages are blue, and standard SMS text messages are the same green color you are used to. You can enable or diable iMessage in the message settings in iOS 5.
If you have iMessage enabled, your iPhone will automatically switch back and forth between iMessage and SMS depending on i) whether you have an active wifi or 3G data connection, and ii) whether the individual you are messaging also has a device that supports, and has enabled iMessage.
If you send an iMessage, you will not incurr a charge from your wireless carrier like you would for a typical SMS text message.

My ex husband bought our 2 girls new Iphones some months ago. They just noticed he had them logged into his icloud and they have never used this facility. Can anyone confirm that he has access to their photos, imessages, SMS, facebook and email etc?

The children had new IPhones 5s bought for them by my ex-husband. He set them up and logged them into his Icloud account which they were unaware of. Some months later they have messages saying their Icloud storage is full which alerted them to the fact it was his Icloud account on their phones. There was also some transference of personal photos from other devices to their phones from his phone? We know he was able to see things on their phone but did not know how. Can he backup all their info without their knowledge? Did he have access to their email; imessage, SMS, facebook, photos etc
Please explain how we can ensure his icloud account details are removed from their phones so he can not access their phones. In addition is there anyway he could have put spyware on their phones and if so can we run a test of some sort?

You should do the following on each of your children's devices:
Log out of iCloud.
Log out of the iTunes Store and App Store.
Create a new Apple ID.
Log in to iCloud using the new Apple ID.
It isn't possible to install malicious software on an iOS device unless the device is jailbroken or you have the resources of a government intelligence agency.

Will there be a future way to set up your imessage/SMS to provide an auto reply when you are unavailable like driving in your car?

As we all get more and more used to sending texts instead of picking up the phone and calling someone, I find that people try and reach me when I am driving and I have no good way to tell them I'm in the car or unavailable and not just ignoring them. It seems that most other phone providers have thought of this and allow a number of unavailable messages to be created. Apple did this for phone calls coming in but why not iMessage/SMS?
WIth the big push on not texting and driving you would think that there is a solution by now...can some please let me know that this is in the list of enhancements at least or has someone found an app to do this today?

Thinking apple needs to bring a option to pick from photo gallery to set as a theme/background on imessage/sms that will be cool to see on iphone :)

I THINK THAT IT WILL BE SO COOL IF YOU CAN PIC FROM YOUR PHOTO GALLERY TO SET AS THE BACKGROUND IN YOUR IMESSAGES/SMS IT WILL GIVE A NEW LOOK AND FEEL ALSO THE OPTION TO BLUR THE BACK GROUND JUST A LITTLE OR SET AS IS.....WHAT DO IPHONE USERS THINK SHOULD APPLE DO THE NEXT BIG UPDATE WHERE YOU CAN DO THAT ??????

Duplicate iMessage/SMS messages

My iPhone 4S is receiving duplicate messages from the same contact (also iOS5/iMessage user) via iMessage and SMS at the same time.
For example, I would send a message as an iMessage.
My friend would reply via iMessage and shortly after, I would receive the very same message but as an SMS. In the screenshot below, you can see that I have received the same message twice in different formats.
It seems like its toggling between iMessage/SMS. I have verified that the iMessage was flipped to "yes." I have also turned off iMessage and turned it back on again with no success. This has been happening to multiple people sending me messages (all of whom use iOS5/iMessage).
Does anyone else have a similar issue? Does anyone have any suggestions as to what could be wrong?

No one is doing anything wrong. Apple can fix this. Notice that you always get the text message first. Here's what's happening to millions of people:
- Your friend's iPhone is on the default setting, to "Send as SMS when iMessage is unavailable."
- Your friend sends a message from a place where data service (3G, etc.) is spotty, or has cut out for a second, and there is no wi-fi. This triggers iMessage to send the message via SMS, which basically goes through the voice channel of the cellular network, which almost always works. Therefore, you receive the text message.
- Shortly afterward, many times within seconds, your friend regains data service (back on 3G or wifi or whatever) and their phone automatically sends the message again via iMessage.
- You receive a duplicate message.
Solution? On the receiving end, if two messages from the same person contain the same exact text and are received within a minute of each other, iMessage shouldn't show the second one. I'm open to other ideas, but I for one would be happy if my phone did exactly this.

I am going through a divorce and am still on same plan a my husband. Can he view my imessages/sms without my knowleddge. We have separate apple ids

I am going through a divorce. My husband and I have the same plan. We have different apple ids. Can he view my imessage/sms? I know my friends are able to view their childrens' messages. Want to know if he can view mine withough my knowledge?

well, that is good to know!! I was worried he had just one other way to feel he can "Lord" over me.

IPhone with iOS 6 no longer receives iMessages (SMS only)

I'm working with a friend who's having an odd issue with his iPhone (iOS 6). I used to be able to use iMessage to reach him via his phone number, but now I see an error when I use that same number: "+1 (xxx) xxx-xxx is not registered with iMessage."
We've verified that Messages is turned on and enabled on the phone. The phone number is listed as a valid channel (alongside his iCloud e-mail) for iMessages. We've reset the phone. Turned Messages on and off. Nothing seems to re-enable Messasges to his phone number.
If I send a Message via my iPhone to his, it is always an SMS.
If I send a Message to him via his iCloud e-mail, it is always an iMessage and arrives on both iPhone and computer.
I'm really puzzled and I think we've tried everything in the support documents so I was wondering if there's something else we should tackle?

iMessages and Facetime are not available in some countries, so please check it first.
Be sure you do not turn on Restrictions in your device.
Try to unsign and sign in again.
For FaceTime and iMessage chosse to use your email address instead of your mobile number.
Go to Settings>>Message>>Send&Receive and set your email address.
If it is still not working, unsign your Apple ID and select your mobile number ("+" "country code" "mobile number")
Go to www.apple.com or Settings>>iCloud then access your Apple ID. There you can edit your information, placing your phone number and tap OK. then go to iMessage settings and mark your phone number to receive iMessages.
Also check in: Settings>>Message if you turned on iMessage before. Here, turn off "Show Subject Field".
Change your address for your currently location. If not works, change it for your native country.
Did you turn on iCloud as well?
Reset the Network Setting, which makes your phone to forget every networks and passwords that you connected your phone to.
to reset the Network Settings just go to Settings - General - Reset (at the bottom) - Reset Network Settings.
I remember when I reset the Network Settings, i turned off iMessages. I connected to my home Wi-Fi and surfed the web for a little while. Sent some regular SMS messages, and about 10min later, I turned on iMessages again and sent a text to a friend with an iPhone and it started working as iMessage! Baloons finally became blue.

Imessage & sms using iphone ipad and macbook pro

I just had a new ipad mini for christmass. Great... but I have a new problem.
Note that I dont have a data plan on my cel. That means that i received imessages only when I am connected to wifi (home, university, etc..)
Before I had my new ipad mini. i configured my iphone and macbook pro to use imessage with my cel phone no as my primary ID. Everything was fine. When I was at home (both iphone and macbook pro connected to wifi), i was getting imessages on both my iphone and macbook pro at the same time. My friends that do not have apple devices were sending me sms that i was getting on my iphone only. When leaving home with my iphone only, I usually close my laptop that is getting automatically in sleep mode. My iphone continue to receive all my messages (my friends imessages were automatically converted to sms because my macbook pro is sleeping and therefore not accepting imessages and my iphone was not connected to wifi). When I get at school and my iphone connect to wifi, my iphone now reveives all imessages plus sms.
With the new ipad mini (configured the same was as my macbook pro to accept imessage with my iphone no as the main ID) it seems that it continues to receive all imessage, even when sleeping.
The effect is that when i leave home with my iphone only and get out of the wifi, my iphone do not get any imessage that are accepted by my ipad mini. My friends that use iphones dont know that i am not getting their messages because they see on their iphone that their message have been distributed.
That is a big problem for me.
I want to receive all my messages (imessage and sms) on my iphone... when i am connected to wifi and when i am not.
The work around solution i use (that i dont really like) is that, on my new ipad mini, i unchecked my phone no in the list of ID for imessages. With this solution, i am back as i was before getting my new ipad mini... but the problem is when i use imessage with my apple mini using my apple id as my imessage ID, my friends are getting 2 different conversations... on with my iphone no as imessage ID and another one with my apple id as my imessage ID. If they ever use this last one when I am out of a wifi zone with my iphone... I will not get those message on my iphone...
What is the solution??????

If you are still not receiving your iMessages between all your ios devices, I recommend the following section of this article:
iOS: Troubleshooting Messages - Apple Support
If you aren't receiving iMessages across all iOS devices
Go to Settings > Messages > Send & Receive on each iOS device and make sure that you signed in with your Apple ID. You must use the same Apple ID on each device.
Go to Settings > Messages > Send & Receive > You Can Be Reached By iMessage At and make sure that you selected each phone number and email address you want to use with iMessage.
If you linked a phone number to your Apple ID with iMessage and the phone number hasn't appeared, follow these steps.
Sign out of your Apple ID in Settings > Messages > Send & Receive and Settings > FaceTime on all devices.
If you're linking a phone number to an Apple ID, sign in to iMessage on your iPhone first. Then sign in to the rest of your device one by one with iMessage and FaceTime.

IPhone 5S iOS 7: iMessage / SMS Haptic Feedback

Two issues here:
How can I stop my iPhone from notifying me twice over about a text (not the double vibrate from a text, but a double vibrate then another one about two minutes later even though a new text has not come in)?
How can I stop my iPhone from telling me (both visually and with haptic feedback) that an iMessage failed to send despite successfully and automatically sending as a text? Tell me that after all options are exhausted and it fails, not when it fails in iMessage then succeeds in SMS.

IMessage & SMS 'waiting for activation' ??

Ok so what is the go cannot send any text or iMessage it's always stuck on 'waiting for activation' and always fails after half an hour or do anyway ?
Used to be able to send SMS on my iPhone 4 but bought iPhone 4s first day it came out with ios 5 no luck with text messaging what's wrong ?

I live in Costa Rica, I have an iPhone 5, updated to iOs 8, deactivated iMessage to enable sms on Yosemite. Anyway, reactivated iMessage and it just says Waiting for activation, and I get strange international SMS's every 1-3 hours. Seems like the iPhone doesn't recognize these activation SMS's. Tried everything I have found: resetting, restoring, etc. Please help.

IMessage/SMS Delay/Duplication

Forgive me if this has been asked and solved, but I can't find anything on it. I received delayed duplicates of texts sent to me. For example: My girlfriend texts me from her iPhone and I receive the text as an iMessage. Anywhere from 30 seconds to a few hours later I receive the same message, but this time as an SMS. I am on AT&T if that means anything. Is this a known problem, and if so, is there a fix?

I would give AT&T a call and see why that is happening to your phone.

IMessage & SMS 5.1 lag

This only started recently & it happens with both iMessage & SMS. There is a noticeable lag receiving messages. When I am sending someone a message or when I have their messages open instead of receiving them as usual on my screen I get the little number on the top left screen. Ill select it & after takes me to message list it says there's new message in the same messages I had open. It's almost as if it's like a refresh button like on Internet explorer.

It just happened now actually. Someone sent me a text message & while I was answering their first the number top left showed up as they had sent me another message. Instead of getting it then after I hit send & went back to message list it showed up. Ill answer one & then while answering I won't get the other they sent until done sending the first. It messes up the conversation & puts things out order. Someone asked a question earlier & while I was answering instead noticing they texted back to say nevermind I send answer & ugh it's annoying

IMessage & SMS: Confused Threads

My 3 kids have ipods and basic cell phones. My wife and I have iphones. We have family imessage threads as well as sms threads with various combinations of family members. Keeping track of sms vs imessage threads is REALLY confusing. Suggestions?

The best suggestion is to create an Apple ID for each device owner in http://appleid.apple.com and set iMessages to work with it.
But you can uncheck everything in each device except for the phone number in Settings > Messages > Send & Receive

Edit: the idea is to have several contacts with each ID or number, plus a contact that has all of them in common (say a common email address you can use). That's how I organize mines, one email address / Apple ID each, plus one email address for all.

Silence Facetime/iMessage SMS charges notification

Does anybody know if it it possible to disable (or silence) this notification:
"Your carrier may charge for SMS messages used to activate FaceTime"?
Facetime and iMessage work correctly on both the e-mail address and phone number, however this message pop's up and asks for confirmation every time the device switches from 3G to Edge, or cell phone reception gets interrupted. I can't find any reference to a setting to disable this confirmation and it is getting a bit annoying - I do select 'OK' every time the notification pops up.

It can't be changed. The phone was sold for use in the UK. Can you use it elsewhere? Sure, but Facetime activation is going to sent a message back to the primary activation server for that phone, which is in the U.K. Unlike the iPod Touch, Facetime ties into the phone number of the phone. SMS is how this tie in is done.
What carrier are you using? Bothe Aircel and airtel are supported carriers. I can't absolutely confirm, but I believe if it's being used on a supported carrier AND the line is properly provisioned for an iPhone, you should not be charged. If you are using an unsupported carrier OR you have not informed Aircel or airtel (assuming you are using one of them) that you have an iPhone and had them properly provision the line for your IMEI, you will be charged for an International text message for activation. There is no way around this and no way to change it. Other than to sell the phone and purchase one in India.

IMessage sms error?

I've been sending iMessages to my friend for the past day and it was working perfectly till the messages started turning green (meaning it was sent as an sms). The only problem is that my friend lives in another country which would mean in paying international fees for sending that text message. My messages send of as blue, but after I check again it changes to green.

same thing actually happened to me, and I don't have a text plan, so I just got charged SMS fees for each text, Not sure whats going on, but I can't use iMessage if I am occasionally going to be charged, I will have to stick to textfree until the problem is fixed, hopefullly someone figures out what is wrong
