IMessage to SMS (text), contact no longer on iOS device. (Android, etc.)

I just ran into this problem when my wife recently switched from an iPhone to an Android phone. My messages to her were showing up on my iPhone as "Not Delivered" via iMessage. After reading through many discussions about many different methods and attempts that were either unfruitful, or ridiculously complicated, I decided to look at the problem from a different perspective.
The facts are: Our iPhones are completely capable of regular text messages. iMessage exchanges occur after we identify the other person's phone in our contacts as an "iPhone".  Also, new numbers we add are not automatically forced into an iMessage format. So... I did the following.
1. On my iPhone, I edited the contact and deleted the "iPhone" number.
2. While the mobile number had no association to anyone in my contact list, I composed a test message, manually entered the mobile number and sent it. (It sent as text)
3. I edited the contact again, and added the number as "mobile" instead of "iPhone". Then I sent another message. (It also sent as text)
Our conversation threads and history remained intact, and included the two test messages. Also, all other iMessage functions with other people continued as normal. In the conversation thread there is a header between messages when the messaging format changes.
As I see it, all that really needed to happen was for my phone to no longer associate her number as an iMessage capable device. All this stuff with resetting my AppleID, calling AppleCare, or even shutting down iMessage seemed to be trying to kill a fly with a sledgehammer.  What I did here was at most a small annoyance, and took about a minute to do.
So, if you are the individual that is no longer using iMessage, tell your iMessage contacts how to "reset" your number in their iOS devices, because they can still get messages from you.
     I hope this helps.

  • Why does my iMessage change from iMessage to SMS text randomly?

My iMessage will randomly change from sending an iMessage (to contacts that also have iMessage) to SMS text. When this happens, my internet also stops working. Safari, Twitter, Facebook, everything. It always happens at the same time and then it will randomly come back but it is frustrating because no one receives my texts during that time.

Settings > Messages > Send as SMS > OFF will stop iMessage from reverting to SMS, but it will not fix your network issue.
The fact that your contacts are not receiving SMS from you is something, along with the network issue, that needs to be addressed with the carrier.

  • Receive iMessage and SMS text in one window

I was wondering if anyone knows of a setting or whether its even possible to receive an iMessage from an iPad and a SMS text from a non Apple phone within one chat window when they both are coming from the same person. Someone text's me throughout the day from her non iPhone. When she gets home and hops on her iPad, she sends me messages from iMessage. This opens two different chat windows. Any way to fix this?

I'm sorry, Apple will not read this. They do not participate in the forum. If you would like to provide them with feedback about this, you can do that HERE. Then click on the appropriate link. While switching between iMessage and SMS in a single conversation is possible, remember as I said, you are conducting two separate conversations, because they are coming from two separate devices, that are actually crossing platforms.

  • ITunes no longer finding iOS devices

All of sudden iTunes is no longer finding my iOS devices.  I have an iPhone 6 and an iPad Air 2.  I have connected both to my iMac running latest OS, using the lightning cable.  It worked fine till about an hour ago.  Now both devices keep prompting me to trust my mac.  I click trust and nothing happens.  Disconnect and reconnect and same thing appears on my iOS devices.
I have reset both devices, reloaded iTunes and reset my Mac, nothing seems to work.  Odd thing is that I can still connect all devices to my Apple TV, which is normally temperamental and drops the connection to iTunes half way through a show.
    Anyone else having this issue?
iTunes and iOS are definitely full of bugs between this and the missing TV Show Art Work, it is becoming very tiresome waiting on Apple releasing updates

In my experience, yeah, everything was fine. Until the next day, when you have to shut down and restart again. And then the next day.... ridiculous.

  • IMessage switched to Text Message on Verizon after iOS 5.1 Update

    Hi-
I just noticed that my iMessage messaging seems to be non-functioning and a conversation I was having with my fiancee via iMessage is now in Text Message "mode".  We both updated to iOS 5.1 the other day and I'm wondering if something broke after the update as the iMessage funtionality was working before we updated.
    Anyone else have this issue?
Do we both need to be on a Wi-Fi network in order for iMessage to work (I'm on Wi-Fi now but I suspect she is in a 3G area)?
    Thanks,
    S

I have had this same problem, but only after I am on the phone.  Several other people I know have had the same issues.  The two best things I found that fix it are to place in airplane mode for a minute and to turn off iMessage, then do a network reset, then turn the iMessage on after the reset.  It's a pain to have to constatnly do this, but it works.

  • IMessage isn't receiving texts on both of my iOS devices.

As of two or three weeks ago, texts won't appear on my iPad.  Before, they'd come across to both my iPhone and my iPad, but now, I only receive texts on my phone.  I made sure that my Apple ID is in both devices and that the Caller ID on my phone is set to my email address, but I still don't receive messages on my iPad.  Any ideas why?

  • ICloud Drive, what about sharing contacts with my older iOS devices?

Hi folks, I have finally upgraded my Macbook Pro to Yosemite and my iPhone 5S to iOS 8 and Monday will be the promising iOS 8.1.
During the process I have been offered to also update my iCloud account to iCloud Drive.
Sounds cool and necessary to benefit from a few extra features however I still own and use a iPhone 3GS and another iPhone 4.
It's clear that with iCloud Drive I won't be able to share documents among those devices; I can live with that but what about my contacts, calendars and Safari bookmarks not to mention Photos and iTunes Match, would that be the end of it or would those later services still be shared among older and newer devices?
I can't see it clearly stated among iCloud Drive specs and now I am hesitating with the update..
    P

Hi randers4, your explanation convinced me and I have made the plunge and upgraded to iCloud Drive.
It works as you explained, all other services such as Safari Bookmarks, Reminders, Contacts and keep syncing data among them. Nice.
It will be interesting however, how custom folders and files, will share among different users.
Haven't found much documentation on that either but suspect the mechanism won't be as refined as in DropBox.
For instance: as far as I can see, I can't create/copy a link to one specific folder I have created but have to use either Mail, Messages, or one of the SocialMedia I have registered on the Mac.
But perhaps I should start a new topic on this
    Thanks and regards

  • Syncing contacts from iOS devices to OSX

We just got a new Macbook Air (our first Mac device) we already have an Iphone and Ipad mini, we're trying to sync our contacts from both devices to our new Macbook Air, HELP

Since the release of Mavericks (OS X 10.9) syncing contacts and calendars between iOS devices and a Mac via iTunes is no longer supported. The currently supported method is to use iCloud.  http://www.apple.com/icloud/setup/

  • Deleting an iMessage on an iOS device won't sync the deletion on Mac OS

I have scoured through the discussion boards for solutions on how sync message deletions between my iOS devices and Macs via iCloud. So far, no dice. Here's where I'm at now:
I have been able to successfully sync new message creations across all of my iOS and MacOS devices. By that, I mean I can start a new iMessage conversation on any of my Macs or iOS devices and that new message will appear among all of my other iOS and MacOS devices. And it does so almost immediately. Which is great and as advertised.
However, if I then delete that same new message from any of my Macs or iOS devices, it remains on all of my other iOS and MacOS devices. So I'm stymied: although creating a new message puts that message on all connected iCloud devices, deleting that message from any device is only a local phenomenon: to delete any message from all devices, I need to manually go to each device and delete it. Which ***** and is not as I'd remember it being advertised.
So here are my questions for the group:
    1) Is syncronized deletions across all devices/computers even possible? The folks on this here board don't seem to think it is.
    2) Have you personally been able to sync your deletions across your Macs/iOS devices?
2a) If so, can you point to a link or explanation of how, exactly you set up your devices?
    3) What is your Mac OS and iOS version number, so at least we can compare notes? I'm on iOS 7.0.6 on all devices, OSX Mavericks or OSX Mountain Lion on all Macs.
Cheers and thanks in advance, everyone!
    David

    Hi,
The Issue is what you mean by "Sync" and what Apple put into the Apps.
The "Sync" is only "Display on all devices" and not anything else.
It has been this way in the beta (version 6.1 in Lion), Messages 7 and 7.0.1 in Mountain Lion and the version in Mountain Lion (which does include changes at the OS 10.9.2 update but the Messages version has not changed)
At the OS X 10.8.2 (Messages version 7.0.1) we got the  current form of iPhone Numbers and Apple ID full linking which did not happen before this.
This means iPhone could get Apple ID iMessages and the Mac could display the iPhone number iMessages.
The Read, Delivered and deleting an iMessages on one device does not cross over on to other devices.
In  that respect it is closer to fetching POP mail on server devices compared to IMAP ones
Deleting something on IMAP server will delete it form any login.
Doing so on a POP email will not.

  • Lose contacts after updating to IOS 7.1

contact disappear from list no rhyme or reason since downloading IOS7.1 to an IPhone 4s.  Need help to stop this

    Hi virginia297,
Welcome to the Support Communities!  Did you lose one contact or all of them?  The article below provides some troubleshooting steps.  I've highlighted two common steps for you.  Click on the link below for more detailed information:
    iCloud: Troubleshooting iCloud Contacts
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3998
If you're using iOS 7, quit and restart the Contacts app on your iOS device:
Press the Home button twice to see preview screens of the apps you have open.
Find the Contacts preview screen and swipe it up and out of preview to quit the application.
Tap the Home button to return to your Home screen.
Wait a minute before reopening the Contacts app.
Turn iCloud Contacts off and back on:
    Tap Settings > iCloud.
Turn Contacts off. Choose to delete data only if your data exists at icloud.com/contacts and on one or more of your devices. Otherwise, choose Keep Data.
Wait a few minutes before turning Contacts back on.
I hope this information helps ....

  • Messages are sending as SMS texts instead of iMessages to some contacts

    Hi,
I have noticed that a couple of my contacts with iPhones that I would normally iMessage to now I can only SMS text to.
It seems that in both cases, previously I received and iMessage from them and when I replied, it failed so I chose to send it as SMS.
Now, even, though I have deleted the Message threads, whenever I try and send a Message to them it insists on sending an SMS text instead of an iMessage.
How can I force it to start sending iMessages instead of SMS messages again to these contacts?
Thanks in advance for any help on this as it is really frustrating.
    Rgds
    Gary

You may also need to check with those individual receipents regarding the status of their iMessage. The use of iMessage requires an active data connection for both the sender and the receiver. If either is interrupted, it can cause the message to fail. The error could be on their end as well.

  • Upgrade from iPhone 4 to Nokia Lumia 928; texts from iPhone contacts no longer coming through

I just upgraded from an iPhone 4 to a Nokia Lumina 928 last week.  I was forced to make the upgrade because my iPhone's charging port broke (due to normal wear and tear), and could no longer be charged.  I was unable to acquire a replacement prior to the phone dying completely, and as such, I was unsuccessful in resetting the iPhone.
I am unable to receive texts from any iPhone users, period.  We have tried deleting my number as a contact, resetting the SMS and iMessage settings, deleting my number and unregistering my device from iCloud and Apple, and I am still not receiving messages.  These are standard messages, without pictures.
    What is the solution?

    Your phone isn't the problem.
Your contacts may be using iMessage, which can only be used with other Apple devices.
Turning iMessage off resolves the problem.

  • I understand the difference between imessage and SMS but when I text a friend who always got iMessages in the past, everything I send her is SMS (green) even if we both have wifi. She has an iphone.

I understand the difference between imessage and SMS but when I text a friend who used to receive imessages (blue), my phone shows I'm sending her SMS (green) messages. No longer are they blue. She has an iphone and this happens when we are both connected to wifi. We have both recently updated to ios7. Thanks!

    Turn off iMessage
    Reset Network Settings
    Turn iMessage back on

  • My sms texts are still sending duplicates to some contacts

i'm still finding my iPhone 5c sends duplicate sms texts to some of my contacts. Marco49 suggested one solution but I'm sorry to say that didn't solve the problem.

Are you referring to an actual SMS, or an iMessage? If iMessage, do you have your settings set to Send As SMS if iMessage fails? It could be they are temporarily out of data range, or you could be as well, but it was just enough to begin the send. Are these text bubbles blue or green?
If this is an actual SMS, then I suggest that you contact your carrier, as SMS is a carrier function.

  • I cannot send either imessage OR sms to only one certain contact...why??

hi guys...about a week ago, i was texting my partner, when suddenly his messages went to a new thread completely...and instead of his name being at the top of the messages box, it was his email (i know people have that as a second method of contact) he was on his way back from france at the time, so i thought it might be something to do with that!? he has been back a week now, and to begin with just contacting him via email address was fine, but now i cant send messages through imessage, normal SMS or the email adress but i can still call his phone and he can still text me as normal!? i have reset the phone completely....twice, also tried deleting him as a contact entirley and starting again, as well as adding the area code (+44-uk) to the start of the number instead of 07....NOTHING HAS WORKED please help!
