IMessage with the new iOS 6.1

I updated all of the devices associated with my Apple ID to the new iOS 6.1. I have two iPhones, a new iPad 3 and an iPad Mini. My personal phone number is the number associated with my Apple ID. The other iPhone is an add on for my mother.
I used to be able to get iMessages that were sent to my iPhone number forwarded to both my iPads. After the upgrade, my iPads had the phone number changed from mine to my mother's, even though my mother's phone number is not associated with my Apple ID.
I've been fiddling with all the devices all evening and have managed to get my mother's phone number off of my iPads.
Now it appears that I can only use iMessage with email accounts. It was very useful the other way. I'm not sure that iMessage on my iPad will be useful at all anymore now that I cannot receive messages that were sent to my phone number.
Is there anyway to get that feature back, or has it been changed on purpose?

Ok guy the solution i have found is to get the phone that is associated with the number that you do not want on your device and then go into the messages setting under settings, general, messages. Then go into send and recieve. You will then notice that the apple id is your apple id. This needs to be changed to a personal apple id/icloud account. This should be unique for each phone. Once this is changed the second number on your current phone will disappear. On the solution with the ipad... I would sign out of your apple id account and then sign back in... this should reset the imessage account...Hopefully this helped....by the way my situation was that i was recieving my moms texts and facetime calls because i inadvertantly signed into my apple id on her messages and facetime rather than her icloud. It is still possible for her to use your apple id on app store things but use a unique icloud account for things like backup, facetime, imessage, etc... Good Luck
