IMessage won't recognize my phone number

First off, back in January my data plan was turned off for various reasons, so I cannot call or text (sms) from my iPhone. However, as long as I had wifi I could use everything else including iMessage.
Last night, a friend thought it would be funny to try to hack my iCloud account and in doing so they reset the password. So when I woke up, my iMessage and iCloud account was all messed up. So I reset my password and when I went to send an iMessage, it wouldn't work. So I went to settings and tried to fix it via the iMessage setting and I googled everything and tried everything. My last resort was to back my phone up and restore it. I did that, and after it was restored, I got this:
Which makes sense, since my data plan is turned off, but even before when I didn't have my data on, it still was "activated" and said my carrier (Verizon) on it.
So now I am stuck with this in the service bar area:
And iMessage still won't work. And ever since the restore, my phone won't recongize my number and I've tried going into settings and setting my contact card and that's still there, so I don't know what to do. Is the only way to fix this is turning my data plan back on?

You need to contact your carrier, Verizon. They can reset your phone, and once that happens, while you are connected to wifi (since you say you do not have data) you can check the activation status of iMessage in Settings.

The troulbeshooting steps outlined below detail how to get your phone number linked to your Apple ID.
If your phone number isn't listed on an iPod touch or iPad, follow these steps:
Update to the latest version of iOS.
Verify that you're using the same Apple ID that you're using on your iPhone.
On your iPad or iPod touch, sign out of your Apple ID in the following locations:
Settings > Messages > Send & Receive. Tap your Apple ID, then tap Sign Out.
Settings > FaceTime. Tap your Apple ID, then tap Sign Out.
Sign in to your Apple ID with FaceTime and iMessage.
If your phone number still isn't listed, follow these steps:
Sign out of your Apple ID on all iOS devices, including your iPhone, in the following locations:
Settings > Messages > Send & Receive. Tap your Apple ID, then tap Sign Out.
Settings > FaceTime. Tap your Apple ID, then tap Sign Out.
Sign in to your Apple ID on your iPhone.
When activation is complete, your Apple ID and all verified email addresses should be visible in Settings > Messages > Receive At and Settings > FaceTime.
Sign in to your Apple ID on your other iOS devices.

Thank you for visiting Apple Support Communities.
Make sure that your new number is updated in Settings > Phone > My Number. Once this done, follow the steps in the quoted section below. Next, sign back into iMessage and FaceTime. The history will not be modified as no data is deleted.
Unlink a phone number
To remove a phone number from an Apple ID, sign out of FaceTime and Messages on your iPhone:
Settings > Messages > Send & Receive. Tap your Apple ID, then tap Sign Out.
Settings > FaceTime. Tap your Apple ID, then tap Sign Out.
This should remove your phone number from other devices using the same Apple ID with FaceTime and Messages. If the phone number is still available on other devices after you sign out of FaceTime and iMessage on the iPhone, you may need to sign out of iMessage and FaceTime on all your devices, then sign in to FaceTime and Messages again on devices you want to use.
Note: If you no longer have access to the iPhone that is using the number you want to remove, reset your Apple ID password.

I apologize, I'm a bit unclear on the exact nature of the issue you are describing, and/or what you are seeing when you try to login on your new iPhone 5s. Usually, when FaceTime/iMessage is used with a phone number, that phone number and the Apple ID are linked, as outlined in the following article:

Thanks to all who responded. You are all absolutely correct. However, this Ipad was a gift to my wife who was dying of cancer in the hospital and wanted some entertainment. So I started it out with her Apple ID. After she passed away I moved from Sacramento to Austin and eventually proceeded to get the Apple ID changed from my wife's to mine. Meanwhile when she was in the hospital I opened an Itunes account in my name to buy movies for her. That was the first mistake.
Then during the move to Austin I lost track of the IPAD and later found it and tried to use support but could not remember the proper ID. Later the folks at the Apple store helped me create a new and novel Apple ID that was unfortunately unlike any other.
The botom line is that I am stuck with three Apple IDs and three passwords. I am told by Apple there is nothing they can do about this as IDs cannot be changed or destroyed. I can quit using them or start a new account but when I try to do that the system keeps remembering too many things from the past and resists.
Even if I sold this Ipad and bought a new one, the system memory is still there.
I think the real problem is that destop and laptop computers are totally owned by an individual and that individual can control logins and passwords to his liking. IPADs and similar Apple products are different in that the corporation has built in their own intrusion detection schemes because of the relation to Itunes.
One thing I thought about is to open a new Itunes account pretendding to be a new customer with my regular Apple ID. Perhaps I could do the same with Apple Support.

Verizon cloud doesn't recognize my phone number

I have went through the entire process and when I get to the last step and click submit it tells me that it doesn't recognize my phone number. .can someone please shed a light on this for me??

Help! Verizon won't port old phone number over to my FIOS house landline.

Hi, need help on resolving this issue with Verizon. Had Verizon FIOS triple play installed at my house about 12 days ago. HD Prime, 15/5 internet and Digital Voice landline. I switched from TimeWarner cable. I signed up online for Verizon FIOS and tried to use my current house telephone number when signing up. Next day I get a call from a Verizon rep telling me my order was lost even thou I had a confirmation number and that I would have to redo my online sign up.
I wanted to keep my old telephone number that I had with TimeWarner and port it over to Verizon. What I did to save my old house phone number was I ported my TimeWarner house telephone number over to an activated cellular Tracfone that I own. So I resigned up online and selected a new telephone number and the order went thru and I had my FIOS installed at my house.
What I have learned from talking with Verizon billing, is because my old telephone number that I had with TimeWarner had been originally given to me by Verizon many years back and then it was ported over to TimeWarner from Verizon that Verizon now won't port the old number back over to my house landline because they have already ported it out once years ago for me.
One suggested I create a new account, don't know it this can be done or not. I got a really good price on the FIOS Triple Play bundle I had installed and don't want to loose the great Verizon FIOS price deal I have.
Really frustrated at this point, being told before installation that I could keep my old phone number, spending a lot of time on the phone and then being told I can't do it after installation is completed.
Any ideas on how to get or make Verizon port over my old telephone number I have on my Tracfone now to my Verizon FIOS landline? I was told by a Verizon rep that it can't be done and they won't do it since the telephone number is my old Verizon phone number from many years ago that they ported out they won't port in back it now. I have been trying for six months to get my old copper wire phone number ported into FIOS, and have heard nothing but excuses and failure. I am paying two bills, one for FIOS and one for the copper wire line. In a thread earlier this year titled "Help! Verizon won't port old phone number over to my FIOS house landline", a user reported success in getting his old telephone number ported in to FIOS after filing a complaint with the FCC. Do I need to file a complaint with the FCC in order to get some action on this request?

It is OK to use the same apple id on multiple devices. That is how it was intended to be used. The phone number used must be a number registered on an iPhone. I receive imessages and face time calls on my iPad, iPhone and imac. Sometimes the email addresses and iPhone numbers don't properly register on all device. Logging out and back in on all devices can fix the issue.
Now with the release of ios 8 other compatible Apple devices can use the iPhone over a WiFi network to send and receive vioce calls as well.

Okay, so I lost my phone and i deleted everything on it via findmyiphone because i didn't have a password, well i recovered it and restored it from my last backup, my iMessage stopped working with my phone number and only works with my email. I've tried turning off and on imessage, shutting it off and on again, even resetting it, still nothing. any ideas on how to help?
