Imessages being sent as SMS messages

A majority of my text messages are being sent as SMS messages and I get charged for these. I work in an office with Wi-Fi and so does the person I am Texting.
I don't want to turn off the "Send as SMS" button in fear of not receiving undeliverable messages. What is wrong?
Many Thanks!

When imessage is unavailable it will send it as a text message:
symptoms - user/recipient are in an area where the cellular data or wifi signal is week.
Or one person has imessage turned off.

  • IMessages being sent as SMS with Send as SMS turned off

I had an unhappy experience with iMessage. I had about a 1 1/2 hour period on 4/9 where my iMessages were being sent as SMS texts. I have Send as SMS set to Off and I have never had this happen before. I don't remember the iMessages screen changing to indicate it was sending as SMS.
Overall very strange since there should be no way that the messages were sent as SMS with Send as SMS turned off. This is a problem because  I do not have a messaging plan since I don't use SMS so if it switches to SMS and I don't know it the charges could rack up. The hour and a half cost me $8 in SMS charges as it is.
If having Send as SMS set to off does not insure that messages are not sent as SMS texts then what will?

Yes, they were listed as SMS messages on my bill. I was texting all day with one person but it was only this 1 1/2 hour period that was changed to SMS. Nothing before or after that and it's never happened before to me. All very strange. The problem is that if this happened for a longer period it would get very costly and I would not notice it untill I got the bill.
I'm getting my gf to add her email address to her messages account and I will be messaging that from now on. Hopefully iMessage can't turn that into an SMS.
It would be great if there were some way to actually prevent iMessage from sending SMS, but the Send as SMS setting obviously does not work. The only other thing I can think is that it was sending the texts as MMS messages. There is not much if any documentation on the relationship between MMS, SMS, and iMesssage.

  • IMessage immediately sent as SMS message

    Hi everyone
I was iMessaging with someone (both have iPhone 6) for a few days, then, one day, I sent them a message. (I did not have the SMS settings turned on). This is what happened:
The iMessage appeared to send as blue, but immediately appeared as undeliverable with the ( ! ), THEN immediately sent as a green Text message. (rather than idling in blue and me manually having to "Send as Text Message", it did all this automatically)
Now, every time I try to message them, my messages can only be sent as SMS messages (the Send button lights up green instead of blue).
I am able to iMessage with my other contacts. Is there a problem on the recipients end for this? I have not heard from them since this incident. Could their phone be dead/unavailable/setting turned off?
    Please help!

Why would someone turn off iMessage?
And would they still receive the SMS text sent in lieu of the iMessage?

  • Some texts being sent as SMS instead of iMessage

Some of my texts are being sent as SMS (green) instead of iMessages (blue) even though I know these people have iPhones.  It's only certain people it happens to as I have other friends who have iPhones and messages are being sent as iMessages like they should be.  Is there any way to fix this?
    Thanks!

    Hello kaeilli
Thanks for the question. Since the issue is isolated to a few contacts, have you confirmed that these contacts are indeed using iMessage (is it enabled on their iPhone?). If so, see this article:
    iOS: Troubleshooting Messages
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2755
If you still can't send or receive iMessages
    1. Ensure that iMessage is turned on in Settings > Messages.
    2. To send and receive iMessages, your device must have a valid cellular or Wi-Fi data connection.
               - iPhone: Troubleshooting Cellular data
               - iOS: Troubleshooting Wi-Fi networks and connections
    3. iMessage registration validates your Apple ID for use with iMessage. If you are unable to activate iMessage, follow this article.
4; If an iMessage cannot be sent, it will be resent using SMS or MMS, depending on the content. You can turn this behavior on or off in Settings > Messages > Send As SMS. Carrier messaging rates may apply.
    5. Verify that the Apple ID or phone number is listed in Settings > Messages > Send & Receive.
    Thanks,
    Matt M.

  • IMessage just hijacked my SMS messages, I cannot open my SMS board without registering into iMessage - which I do not want.

iMessage just hijacked my SMS messages, I cannot open my SMS board without registering into IMessage - which I do not want to use. SMS message function is from my phone provider. Has anyone a solution to get around this? While trying to get out, I discontinued ICloud - did not help. This seems an example of very poor understanding that the users do NOT want everything monopolized by Apple.

You can't send or receive SMS text messages on your iPad, it isn't a phone and doesn't have a cellular voice channel. There are third party apps that permit SMS text messaging.

  • Why is my iMessage being sent as a text message?

A couple of days ago I installed iOS 5 on my iPhone 4. Now, for my contacts who also own iPhones, iMessages seem to be activated. When I send a message, the bubble is blue, indicating an iMessage.
But then, a few minutes later, these messages are turning green, and underneath them is a line saying "sent as Text message".
Is this a bug? Why's this happening? At the moment, iMessage seems to be useless, at least for me. (I'm in Canada, working on a Bell contract. Does that factor in?)

    I'm having this problem also.
Both my wife and I have an iPhone 4 running iOS5, we were texting using iMessage, and it was working but then for some strange reason, the last 3 or so messages we sent got sent as text, but it didn't show them being sent as a text, until you left iMessage, and returned to it.
The problem was, I had sent 2 pictures through iMessage, they got sent as MMS, and I got charged for them.
Apple need to split iMessage from sms, instead of rolling them in the same app, that way you know your in iMessage, and you know when your in sms.
Why apple have decided to leave them in the same app is a mystery.
    Sort it out Apple.

  • Switched from iPhone to Android and now iMessage being sent instead of Text

A friend of mine recently switched from iPhone to Android and now my text are being sent as iMessage instead of text and he obviously isn't receiving it. How do I fix this bug. I'm using iPhone 4 running iOS 5

I apologize about the odd style but I'm using voice rec software.  I just got the Galaxy S five and I have this problem too after weeks of searching online I finally figured out the problem it is with iMessage even if you have your old phones imessage switched off. you have to get your friends to text you normally and send. If the text bubble shows up blue, press and hold choose option send as SMS or text and the bubble will change to green green means SMS blue is the iMessage so its up to the iPhone user to take literally a half of an extra step to send a text to you and if they don't do that then they're just jerks

  • How to avert that iMessage is sent as SMS?

I found that there was some international SMS charge last month. I remembered that I sent several iMessages to my friends, but it seemed that some of them failed. So they were sent as SMS. How to avoid such issue?

  • Why are my iMessages being sent to my father's iPhone as well as mine?

I updated my iPhone to the newest software last night, and now all of my iMessages are being sent to my father's phone. My messages are only linked to my number, iCloud account and email. His is nowhere on it. What is going on?

You visually verified that on both phones?  If so, I'm not sure what the problem is... don't know how that could happen unless your emails matched.
Try turning iMessage off on one or both and then back on.

  • Send as SMS is off but still being sent as SMS

Hi, I've turned off Send As SMS but I did a test to send a message to a number that is not an iOS device and it still sent it as a regular SMS. I checked my usage on Verizon and it does show it counted as a text message thus costing me money.
What happened? I know when I first got the iPhone 4S, it worked i.e when attempting to send to a non iOS device not having iMesaage, it warn and didn't send it. But now it appears to be broken. I'm on latest iOS firmware.

Thanks for the response. That makes sense.
But is there an explanation why then when I send to a known iOS device with iMessage and having the send as SMS off, it still sent as SMS?
Over the weekend, my wife text me (her setting is ON) and it was showing up as green. She was surprised since I have told her that she has to watch out for the blue/green color when we first got the phone. Immediately I respond and it was also green back to her. All the previous text messages were in blue between us.
I restarted my phone and iMessage then worked as expected i.e showing blue when I try to message her.

  • IMessages not converting to SMS messages when recipient not in wi-fi area / out of credit

I have an iPhone 5s (iOS 8.1.3) and my daughter and iPhone 4.  She often texts me without problem.  BUT if I try and reply and she is not in a Wi-Fi area or has run out of credit, the message (in blue) says that it has been delivered but she doesn't receive it.  The only way I can send a message to my daughter is to switch off iMessage and try again and send it as a SMS message - which is surely not how it's meant to be?  Other friends that are also iPhone users who are unaware of this problem so she doesn't get all her messages until back in a wi-fi area - which as a teenager is really annoying!
I do have the settings "Send as SMS" switched to on - so in theory my daughter should get a SMS as a minimum?
I have reset my phone and the network data but nothing has changed.  My daughter is quite fed up on missing out on her messages.
    Any ideas?

Solution found. It was simply that the Cellular data was switched off on my daughters phone.
