Imessages come from email not cell number

I just got a new Macbook Pro and I am trying to make it so that my imessages come to my phone and my computer.  However when I type a message on my computer it comes from my email.  I went to 1. Messages 2. Preference 3. Accounts and then added my cell phone number but it still won't work....can I get some help?

Sign out of iMessage on the Mac:
Messages ▹ Preferences ▹ Accounts ▹ Sign out
and on the iPhone:
Settings ▹ Messages ▹ Send & Receive ▹ Apple ID ▹ Sign out
Then, on the phone, tap
Use Your Apple ID for iMessage
Sign back into iMessage on both devices and test. If there's no change, you may have to wait for a change in network conditions.

  • IMessage sending from email not phone number from my Mac?

So I bought a macbook pro and i at the time had an iphone 4. When i started the messages app on the macbook, it prompted me to sign in and everything and then i could send imessages as if they were from my phone number. Then, i got an iphone 5 and all of a sudden the messages from the macbook were being sent from my email, not my phone number, and I have no idea how to get it back to sending from my phone number. HELP?!

Associate your mobile number with your Apple ID, if you haven't already done so.
From the Messages menu bar, select
    Messages ▹ Preferences ▹ Accounts
and choose from the menu labeled
    Start new conversations from:

  • Texts come from email, not phone number

After coming home from being overseas (where i used imessage through a Wi-Fi instead of activating an international data plan) all my texts look like they are from my email address, not my phone number. I have gone to Settings>Messages and toggled the iMessage on and off. I also changed the Settings>Messages>Receive At>Caller ID to be my phone number... Neither have fixed the problem. It even does it when I turned my wi-fi setting off and force it to use my data plan. The only way I could get it to work was to turn off iMessage all together.
Any help with this would be appreciated... I've looked for solutions but can't seem to find more than what I've already tried.
    Thanks!

That did the trick and it looks like it still sends with iMessage... Just not 'from' my email!   However, does disabling my apple account from iMessage remove any other features etc?  I guess it just feels weird that I should have to log out to get it to work correctly (i checked my wife's iphone and hers works fine logged in.)
Side thought: Maybe I should go look at my apple account settings to see if I can change my caller ID in there
    Thanks much for the help!

  • Imessage sending from email not phone number, why!?

I use imessage from my macbook, ipad and iphone and have selected my phone number to start new messages, through this Check Settings > Messages > Send & Receive but still my messages send from my email.
Any thoughts on what I can do?

When I turn back on all devices, where it says "you can be reached by imessage at" both my phone number and apple id email are checked, but only phone number for "start conversations from"
If I uncheck my email from  the "you can be reached by imessage" section it sends only from my phone number via iphone and ipad (yay!) but I can not log back in to my messaging on my computer now...
Does my email need to be selected in order for me to do this?

  • IMessage sending messages from email not phone number/not working

I have an iPhone 5s and my sister has an iPhone 5c. She told me that my phone was sending her imessages from my email. When I go to change it to my phone number only it has it as a grayed out (will not let me select it). I turned iMessages off and then turned it back on and it still wouldn't so I tried it one more time now I get a "waiting for activation..." under my iMessage switched on. I tried turning it off, hard resetting and then turning it back on but when I go to sign in it says "server couldnt not be reached. try again" and it says that each time i try to sign in.
I guess my questions are: 1) do the imessage servers go down? 2) how do i 'activate" my imessages so it doesnt say 'waiting for activation"? 3) how do i make my imessages come from my phone number and not my email?

  • IMessage from email not phone number

I went out of the country for a week and when we were back in the states all of my friends got their messages from that week but I didn't. My iMessage will only send/recieve from my email account used with my apple id and not my phone number. How do I switch it and recieve my messages?

If you go to settings/messages/imessage there should be an option that says send and receive. It gives you a choice by email or phone number.
Also make sure imessage is activated as you have been away from home.

  • Imessaging from email not phone number?

How come when I message people from my mac/itouch it shows up as an email instead of an imessage?  I've added my friends email addresses to their contact information but I still have multiple threads of messages from each person.  Is there a way to have one consecutive thread for each friend, regardless of their device?  And then do the same for when I message them?
    Thanks!!

This is happening because when you send an iMessage from your mac/touch it is sent from your email address.  If you want to continue the conversation on your phone you'll have to add the email address to Settings>Messages>Receive At on you phone.  Also, if you want to be able to continue a conversation started on your phone on on your mac/touch, you'll have to go to Settings>Messages>Receive At>Caller ID on your phone and set it to your email address.  This way the conversation is sent from your email address on all your devices, an replys are sent to the same email address.  This will be simplified with iOS 6 later this fall.

  • IMessage from Email not Telephone number.

Ive read all the other 1000 responses on this topic, however none of them work. Added another Iphone 4 to my account and we acctivated it lastnight. Imessage is activated on the phone. However when sending imessages its showing her email address rather than phone number. Noww before I get the same replies I have went to Settings<Messages<Recieve at and there is no option for phone and there is no option for caller ID. So im lost. And I was on the phone with Apple for an hour lastnight and got NO where. Any ideas?

Can you see your phone number here?

  • How to change iMessage id from email to mobile number

I Have activated my iMessage account using my email address i would like to change it to my mobile number

I'm assuming that you have an iPhone? If not, then it can't be done.
If you do have an iPhone. Then go to your iPhone...
Settings---> Messages---> Send & Receive---> Make sure that your number is selected. Your email should be there, but I find it best to leave it not checked.
Now on your Mac. Go to your Messages app.
Messages---> Preferences---> Accounts---> Make sure that your number is there, if so make sure it's checked. Just like with what I said about the iPhone, make sure that your email is not checked.
The reason why I prefer to have only the phone number checked/used. Is because there are times that when I send a message, it will some times choose a different means of sending the message. Thus it will be in a different convo window. At least that is the case when on the iPhone. Where as the Mac will keep it in the same window.

  • Imessage sends from email account not phone number?

There are 2 receiving options for messages (phone number and email account) but there doesn't appear to be a send option. All my imessages are sent from email not phone but sms from phone. Can this be changed?

did you ever get this resolved?  I'm having the same issue...  I sometimes only provide an email address to people whom I wish to receive messages from so that they are not able to actually call my phone...  recently I've been hearing from friends who do have my phone number that all of a sudden my messages are being sent from my email address.  My 'start new message' option has ALWAYS been to send from my phone number.  I have always assumed that if someone started a conversation with me by sending to my imessage email address that when I respond to them and them only would it come from the email address...
    this has not been happening...

  • TS4268 When I send an imessage with wifi it send it from the original number I got with the phone before I ported my number over.  When I send an imessage on the network it comes from my own ported number.  How do I change this?

When I send an imessage with wifi it sends it from the original number I got with the phone before I ported my number over.  When I send an imessage on the network it comes from my own ported number.  How do I change the imessage so that it comes from my own ported number?

Yeah send it from your phone.
Your computer has no knowledge of your phones phone number, it is not a phone.

  • Why do ppl keep reciving my text from my email not my number

WHy do people keep receiving my text from my email not my number ?

It's normal for your phone number to be grayed out under "You can be reached by iMessage at" because your can't edit it or remove it.  To ensure your messages are sent from your phone number go to Settings>Messages>Send & Receive and check it under "Start new conversations from"

I have my landline diverting to my iPhone. However, it does not distinguish whether the call has come from my diverted landline number. My old Nokia many years ago used to show an arrow symbol when it was a call thats source was diverted. I really need to know when a call has come from my landline so I can greet the caller in the appropriate way and also so I can be sufficiently short as I am getting charged for the call from my BT landline to my mobile.

That is not a feature that's available on the iPhone. Sorry.

  • When using iMessage from Mac it shows email, not phone number

When I text people from iMessage on my MacBook Pro it is showoing my email address, not my phone number on the reciever's end.
    How do I fix this?

    Hi Hannah_MS,
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.  This article has information on choosing the address you start conversations from:
    iOS: Using Messages
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3529
You can change the address that new iMessage conversations are started with in Settings > Messages > Send & Receive > Start new conversations from:. Note that this setting applies only to new conversations. If you would like to change the address from which messages are sent, first change this setting, and then delete the existing conversation and start a new one.
iMessage responses will be sent from the address the recipient most recently messaged. For example, a friend sends you a message to your Apple ID. Responses in this conversation will be sent from your Apple ID, even if you've selected new conversations to start from your phone number.
    Cheers,
    - Ari
