  • Sharing iTunes movies with family member

Hi everyone and thank you in advance if you can help me at all.
At home my partner and I share my MBP (using only one account), which contains my iTunes library that I use with several of my own devices (ipad, iphone, ipod). My partner is going to buy an iPad this week and I want us to be able to share TV/Movies whilst maintaining separate iTunes libraries on the MBP (we have very different music tastes and do not want to 'pollute' each others' libaries). Any future TV/Movies purchases will not be made from a shared itunes account - in case we break up we'd want to walk away with our respective movies.
Apart from creating a new user account on the MBP for my partner and re-locating both iTunes libraries to the shared 'public' folder so that we can manually add movies and TV to our individual iTunes accounts (which seems like a clunky and hard-drive consuming solution) I'm not sure what to do.
    Is there another way?
    Thanks
    Carrie

    Hi bcarrie,
    Welcome to the Support Communities!
The method you mention above is the best way to share your iTunes libraries:

    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1203
The other option would be to backup the iTunes library to an external drive, and then copy it to the new User Account if you want to develop the two libraries independently.

  • Home Sharing with family member?

I am trying to get music from my brothers computer onto my computer.  Can we share music with each other if we each have our own apple ids using Home Sharing?  We do live in the same household and are on the same WiFi network.
    Thanks

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
    Yes you can do that.
Whilst you need to use your own ID's for the iTunes store on each of your devices, you need to use the same ID for home sharing on all devices.
It doesn't matter who's ID you use, but it must be a valid one.

  • My Apple ID is getting mixed up with family member's.

My Apple ID is correct in all settings, & in iTunes & iCloud, I can purchase apps but when I try to update apps it switches to my daughter's Apple ID requiring her password.

Sign her out and sign yourself in!

  • IMessage bizarre behavior sending messages to one family member

I need help figuring out how to resolve a very annoying anomaly I am experiencing with iMessage involving only one family member.  All 5 family members use Apple products - combination of iPhones, Macs, iPads.  Everyone has their own unique Apple ID and everyone has set up their iMessage accounts to send from their phone numbers when starting a new message thread.
I am unable to reply to iMessages initiated by one of the family members from their iPhone when viewing it on my Mac and can only carry on a conversation with them to their iPhone when I start the thread.  When she starts the thread from her iPhone, her name in the To: field turns to a red color and when I try to reply I get an error message: "Your message could not be sent.  xxx email address is not registered with iMessage."  Their xxx email address that is listed is associated with an Apple ID of theirs that they don't use anymore, even though the message they send from the iPhone is sent with their phone number.  When they start a message thread to me from their iPad I get it just fine and can reply.
This makes absolutely no sense - none of the other family members have this issue.  And the issue seems confined to messages she starts from iPhone and that I try to respond to from my Mac.
Not sure how to even attempt to fix this.  I could ask her to turn off iMessages from her iPhone and turn it back on - don't know how to try the same thing on my Mac.
    Thoughts/recommendations?  Thanks in advance.

    Be specific.
    Everyone?  or Every Device?
If every device, does that mean you can no longer share apps?

Don't do that. iMessage is designed to sync messages between all devices configured with the same Apple ID.
Everyone should have their own Apple ID. They were never designed to be shared.

  • Problems with iPhone messaging - received messages showing as sent messages and messages sent to one family member gets received by other family members.

AT&T family plan - 4 iPhones in use by family members (4s, 4g, and two 3g's).  Weird things happen when we text message:
    1.   Sometimes, received messages look like they are sent messages - and no alert is sounded.   The conversation looks like you are talking to yourself.   Sometimes it happens to both parties in a text conversation, sometimes it only happens to one party.   Deleting the message entirely and starting over from scratch sometimes fixes the problems and sometimes doesn't fix the problem.  Once this phenomenon starts in a conversation it is almost impossible to get it to stop.
    2.     Sometimes text messages to a specific family member get replicated to other family members as if in a group conversation - but group is turned off.   This happens sporadically but it happens.   Quite embarassing when husband and wife are sending private messages then suddenly the kids see the message on their iPhones!   Can't figure out why this happens or what makes it happen, but happens a lot!!!
Has anyone had these problems or knows how to fix them?

  • Remote sharing with a family member

I've read some of the other suggestions, but either I don't understand exactly what the information entailed (a bit too non-specific for my purposes), or it's information that doesn't apply.
What I'm wanting to do is set up access so a family member can get some files from me, without me having to upload things to a filesharing site (way too tedious, time consuming and counter-productive...for ME) for him to download from or have him drive over and borrow my external drive (I'll have to put the stuff on there, then delete it later - also counter productive...again, for ME).
I looked at the Mac Help and seems I should choose Remote Login and have him access through Terminal (I'll have to give him the 411 on Terminal; I'm positive he doesn't even know what it is, LOL). Based on what I'm seeing, it looks like I should choose "Only these users" > "+" > "Administrators." I don't like the Administrators choice but don't know how to just add him, specifically...unless I should add another login on my Mac with his name so it appears under Users. This is a temporary thing and I'll turn remote login off (or just delete everyone but me) and delete his temporary login. This is my guesstimate based on what I read in Mac Help and a traipse through the various options in Sharing.
We're both running Snow Leo 10.6.8; I'm on an iMac and he's on a Macbook Pro. This is my 33 y/o son, so trust isn't an issue. Let me know if I'm on the right track or if there's something else I need to do.
    TIA

This forum is for Apple Remote Desktop, Apple's software for managing networked Macs, and so is probably not the best place for this question. I'd suggest the Mac OS X 10.6 forum.
Unless your family member understands UNIX commands, I would not suggest Terminal. There's too much chance for things to go wrong. Simple file sharing is probably you best bet if you really don't want to use any external service, but I think Dropbox (or a similar service) would be a lot easier since all you or your family member would need to upload and download the files is a web browser. Dropbox gives you 2GB for free, is easy to set up, and never plagues you with spam.
    Regards.

  • Issue with Family Sharing and unshareable apps

My husband and I just upgraded to iPhone 6's with iOS 8.0.  Previously, we both used my Apple ID for all app purchases on our old phones.  With iOS 8.0, we turned on the Family Sharing feature.  We would both like to install the mobile app for our bank (TD (Canada)).  With Family Sharing turned on, this app is listed as one of my purchases.  However, it is also listed as "unshareable".  I can install the app on my phone, but when my husband tries to install the app, he gets a message saying that the app has already been purchased using a different Apple ID and cannot be installed on his phone.  Note that on his phone, he does not even see the app under my purchases when he goes to App Store | Updates | Purchased.  However, if he searches for the app in the App Store, instead of a "FREE" button, he sees the iCloud download icon.
Has anyone else run into this problem and figured out how to fix it, or is this just an iOS 8.0/iTunes/App Store/iCloud bug?  It actually does not make sense that a free banking app would be "unshareable" under Family Sharing in the first place since several members of the same family will most likely use the same bank.
    Thanks for your help!

I have the same issue.  I spent an hour on the phone with Apple and they don't have a clean fix for it.  The issue seems to be with apps that developers have not yet set the Family share-able flag as yes or no.  They said that when developers update the flag this will resolve itself.  Meanwhile, if in the app store the details of the app under Family Sharing it says "Not Available" it will be an issue. I found a reasonable workaround for this particular issue by hiding the original purchase and "re-purchasing" as follows:     Disclaimer/Note: Not all Apps are share-able, (even free ones.)  If the app you are trying to deal with is an actual paid for app, you will be buying it again!  Better to wait until the core issue gets fixed, unless you are willing to pay for it again.
    1.  On a PC or Mac, in iTunes, have the original purchaser log in to the iTunes store, then under Quick Links click on Purchased.  Click on Apps at the top and find the app that is at issue. (Hint:  The apps are not necessarily listed under the obvious app name.  I was looking for Colorspot from  SherwinWilliams, and found it under SherwinWlliams, not Colorspot.)  Once you find the app, hover over it and click on the X in the upper left corner to hide it.  Do this for all the apps that are at issue. (See Disclaimer/Note above)
    2.  On the iOS device that is having the problem, close the App Store app. (If you have many apps at issue you might make a list, or take a screenshot first)
    3.  On the same iOS device, find the app and delete it.  (not ideal but it works!).  Once you have all the apps at issue deleted, reboot, and make sure you are logged in to the iTunes store as the secondary "purchaser", (If you are logged in as the original purchaser you probably wouldn't have the issue in the first place, although to me that means going a bit backwards and not really using the Family Sharing program.)
    4.  Open the App store app, if you started the whole process with an app that wouldn't update, confirm that the app is no longer listed.
    5.  Search the store for the problem app as though it was a new purchase (at this point it is.)  Once found, it should be listed with the "Free" or a "price" icon. If it shows the cloud and download arrow icon the hiding you did in step 1 hasn't updated yet.  Wait awhile longer. (Reboot again? Re-log into store again?)  (Also note here, that a properly shared app will show the cloud/download arrow icon and would be download-able without issue.)  If it shows as Update, it hasn't actually been deleted from the device.  If all is well, you should be able to proceed with a typical "purchase" of the item.  (See Disclaimer/Note above) If the family member has multiple devices, repeat 2-5 for each device.
If you have multiple family sharing members wanting the app you will have to repeat  step 1, hiding the purchase in each iTunes account until all family members have gone through the re-purchase process.  After fixing all of their devices, each person can go back into iTunes, click on Account under Quick Links, go to iTunes in the Cloud section, Hidden Purchases line, click Manage, and unhide the hidden apps.  This would be important for future sharing when the bugs get worked out.
    Good luck!

  • Issues with family sharing - Advice please

I am trying to get family sharing to work and believe I have followed all instructions.
    - 2 iphones 6 all on iOS 8
    - I have invited to family sharing with my account and turned on sharing. I am signed into the apps/iTunes store wit the same account I am using for Family Sharing
    - my spouse has accepted the invite; she has her own Apple ID and iCloud, but is signed in into Apps/iTunes store with MY Apple ID as requested.; she also shares her purchases
I am able to see what she has purchased but she is not able to see mine. She is getting an error message that her account is associated to a different iCloud?
    Very confusing. Any solution?

    Posted too soon.
Here's what we're running into:  He goes to the App store, locates the app, clicks 'Get' and 'Install', is prompted for me to enter the security code for our credit card, etc.  Then he receives a message that indicates that a family member has already purchased the app, etc.  He clicks 'ok' and the App store seems to try to proceed with downloading it.  However, before it can go anywhere, it stalls out with a 'Cannot connect to iTunes' error.
This seems to be isolated to the older iPods.  We know the app itself is compatible with v6.1.6, and the device doesn't appear to be having any issues connecting to the iTunes store for any other apps.  What should he do?

  • Can't log in with a family member ID

    Dear all,
I'd have a question about family member log in to iCloud.
I own a mobile me family pack account which I upgraded to iCloud. Master account works great on my Mac. I have troubles using family members accounts.
I made the same operations for upgrading to iCloud with a family account. I can sign in and read my email with Safari, I got Apple's confirmation that my member account went to iCloud. I have problems when I try to log in with it. If I enter ID and pass, Mac says, in the iCloud preference pane "Unrecognized Apple ID or password." Then a window saying "You can't sign in at this time. Try signing in again." I also noticed that Mail app doesn't work
Any idea??  I thank you in advacne for your kind collaboration
    Regards
    Fabrizio

if you already have one iCloud account signed into in System Preferences>iCloud, you can add additional accounts but not there - you enter them in System Preferences>Mail, Contacts & Calendars. This will enable you to access email, but you can't sync Calendars and the rest of it with any account except the one you signed into first, the 'Primary Account'. If you want to use another account fully you would have to create a new user account on your Mac and sign in there.
Incidentally, if a Family Pack sub-account has been successfully migrated - as appears to be the case - it's an iCloud account like any other: the fact that it was once a sub-account isn't relevant, so don't let that confuse you.

  • I share a photo stream with a family member. Is there a way to make it so we have separate photo stream but still use the same apple id?

i share a photo stream with a family member. Is there a way to make it so we have separate photo stream but still use the same apple id?

You'll want a separate iCloud account for each user in addition to the main Apple ID used for purchases.
Let's say you have a family of four (husband, wife, and two children). Here is what you will need:
Main Apple ID for shared purchases in Tunes (everybody will be using this)
iCloud (Apple ID) account for husband
iCloud (Apple ID) account for wife
iCloud (Apple ID) account for child 1
iCloud (Apple ID) account for child 2
Yes, you can have both an Apple ID and iCloud account setup on the same device. On each iOS device, setup the main Apple ID account for the following services:
iCloud (Photo Stream and Backup are the only items selected here).
    Music Home Sharing
    Video Home Sharing
    Photo Stream
Additionally, on each iOS device, add a new iCloud account (Under Mail, Contacts, Calendar) that is unique to each user for the following services:
    Mail (if using @me.com)
    Contacts
    Calendars
    Reminders
    Bookmarks
    Notes
    Find My iPhone
    Messages
    Find Friends
    FaceTime
On your individual Macs (or Mac accounts), use the main Apple ID in iTunes. Then, use the unique iCloud account in/for iCloud.
Now that everbody is using separate iCloud accounts for your contacts, calendars, and other things, it will be all be kept separate.
The only thing that is now 'shared' would be iTunes content (apps and other purchases), backups via iCloud (if enabled), and Photo Stream (if enabled).

  • Hello.  I just bought my first Imac.  Each family member has created an account.  My question is: can each account/family member create their own imesssages, so that each family member can imessage privately?

Hello.  I just bought my first Imac.  Each family member has created an account.  My question is: can each person use imessages privately when logged into their account?  instead of everyone seeing everyones imessages?  is there a way to do this?

I believe the short answer tot that is "yes" however I recommend you contact AppleCare to find out You have 90 days of free AppleCare telephone support when you buy any new Mac. This is the ideal time to begin using it. I'd also recommend that you purchase AppleCare, it will extend your 1 year warranty to 3 years and offer you 3 years of telephone support in addition to other services. You can locate the correct phone number in your part of the planet (Calgary, Canada??) by clicking Contact Apple for support and service
