IMic adequate for electric guitar recording?

Hello there,
Just like the message subject indicates ... any experience/feedback as to how well the iMic (Griffin Technologies) performs (e.g., sound quality, static, etc.)? Many thanks for any input you may provide.
Jacobo
PS - for potential use in new iBook

Hi Jerry,
D.I means direct injection. This is box used on stage to connect your instrument or microphone directly in the PA (that means you don´t need an amp). You can lift the signal from ground to cancel the hum or noises catch by your input or your computer.
2 sorts of DI boxes: Active DI (direct) boxes especially designed to suit musical instruments with piezo pickups.
Have a look on: http://www.leonaudio.com.au/active.htm
or passive: for the other types of pickups, please look at: http://www.leonaudio.com.au/passive.htm for further explanations.
The box should cost between 50 and 100 €/$.

  • Cheap i/o device for electric guitar?

hi. i've recorded on an analog four track for years but now want to make the switch to digital recording with my mac. what is a cheap but decent external i/o device i could use to record my electric guitar on my mac without an amp? thanks in advance.

There are lots to choose from, but this might fit your needs, and is inexpensive:
    http://www.presonus.com/inspire1394.html
It's also somewhat expandable (you can hook up more than one) and it gives you mic preamps as well as Hi-Z inputs.
For something even more basic, check out Griffin Technology - they have cables and adapters.

  • Recommendations for Electric Guitar to USB interface?

I'm interested in purchasing a guitar-to-USB interface for my MacBook Pro. This Spring '11 model does not have an audio input jack, so a 1/4" to 1/8" converter is not an option. Can anyone recommend a relatively inexpensive interface that works well with the amps offered in GarageBand (v.6.0.4)? Thanks!

All Macbook Pros have audio input. It probably shares the same jack as the headphone.
Both the gain and the impedance are wrong for an electric guitar pickup, not a good idea.
Why not a good idea. It's cheep, it works and thousands of people do this every day.
Of course a audio interface is the way to go but if you just want to mess around with with garageband or do the guitar lessons there is no problem using the audio input.
Some single coil pickups may not have enough gain to get a good signal.

  • Macbook Pro May 2010 Input Line for electric guitar

Hi, i've bought a new macbook a few days ago, it's my first mac and i saw that i can connect my electric guitar to my macbook, but the question is how do i do that? I've seen over the internet possible solutions but what i can't understand is how to configure the "line in" jack on the mac...is it possible to connect the guitar over the USB or Firewire?

It is possible to connect the guitar via USB or FireWire, through any of the USB and FireWire audio interfaces that are offered by third-party manufacturers. That's probably a better option than connecting an analog cable with a mini phone plug directly from the guitar to the audio-in port on the MBP. You'd be able to match the input level to the MBP much more effectively by using an external interface.
I'm not a musician and can't suggest any particular interface.

  • Electric Guitar Recording Error

I have GarageBand 11, MB Pro I bought in late 11. I once was able to record my guitar using an Stereo headphone adaptor plug and an audio cable, connecting it to the audio input/output, after changing the settings in System Preferences to "Input". Now this set up fails to work.
I plugged everything in, turned up the volume on everything, and changed the settings but it worked only partially. I recieved a message when I first set it up saying that the audio was not tracking properly, and I heard it lag a lot.
So I switched the cable around, heard interference, and then plugged it back in. After trying another cord, it still would not work.
Could this be a failed driver or something wrong with the software?
Everything is updated to my knowledge.

  • Electric guitar recording "flanges" in and out

ok im haveing a huge problem. everytime i go to record a guitar part the sound does this flange typ thing with the sound and volume of the guitar. it starts out normal and then the volume level just drops to next to nothing and it sounds all flangy. how in the heck do i get this to stop. ive read at several places to try n find out what to do and none of them seem to be explaining the same EXACT problem as im having. im extremely new to this adpbe audition 3.0 and im so comfused as to what this could b caused by. can somwone pleaaaassseee tell my what i need to do. im not tryin to do any fancy stuff just record a simple guitar(myself) on one track trhough my compaq presario cq62 running windows 7. plzz help me!!!

My instinct is that, to answer your question, we're going to need some pretty accurate detail about HOW you're recording your guitar.
The sort of "flanging" effect you describe is done by playing with the phase on your material.   The "fade in fade out" sounds almost like your guitar music is getting to your computer twice but with the absolute phase drifting a bit so that sometimes it's in phase and doubling the level--and other times it's slipping out of phase and causing cancellations (ranging from slight--the flanger effect--to almost total).
Exactly how this might happen, I can only guess at--perhaps you're recording "Wave Out" or "What U Hear" instead of the mic in--and using Audition monitoring to feed it.
Anyway, a note of how you're attempting these recordings and what settings you have on the Windows sound panel and Audition monitoring would be a good next step.

I'm new using Logic, i've been using garageband for quite awhile now though but my question is just basic. When i want to record electric guitar while clicking the software option it brings me to alot of guitar sounds that i want to chose. I chose the twangy electric or the distorted strat but i only hear clean sounds. No matter what kind of guitar sound i chose in the library it only produces clean guitar. How can i make it sound like it supposed to? Did i miss something i should do?

This definitely has me stumped as I'm unsure as to why your guitar can be heard, but with none of the channel strips plugins applied to the sound.
On the record enabled channel strip that contains your guitar input, is the "I" button located near the "R" active? Also, if you record your guitar, can you hear the FX applied to it when you play back the recorded track?

  • Electric Guitar for Recording

    Hi,
    I'm using Logic Express Actually.
I'm using very cheap guitar for Recording...that's EG112 yamaha electric guitar and RBX170 with me and my recording!!:D
Erm...is it really important to get a high range Guitar for recording??like Taylor,Fender,Ibanez,Martin,Gibson and so on??
What about the lower range of Fender-Squire??Ibanez Gio??and something like Samick Fastback or Cobra??and oso china made guitar??
any expert can really give me a hand and idea on it before i make a investment??
    Thanks
    Ray

If the rest of the guitar is nice, and only the sound is the problem, perhaps the pickups aren't matched to the body (many inexpensive guitar manufacturers use "stock" pickups which are one size fits all). If anything, I have modified almost all of my guitars (mostly older Ibanez models), fitting in pickups that I felt matched the guitar (part research and part dumb luck - fortunately, my choices seemed to have brought out the best of those guitars).
As for recommending a pick-up, it really depends on what you want to bring out of the guitar. You don't just want to stick a pick-up in and hope for the best. Just remember that you lose high-end as you increase your pick-up output. On certain guitars, this would render it to nothing more than a 6-string baseball bat. Keep in mind the body material, shape and size when choosing a pickup. Everything plays a part in your sound.

  • Is it possible to use a cable with two headphone jacks on either end and an electric guitar adapter to record in Garageband?

    Hey everyone,
I got my Macbook Air (Mid 2013 model) last month and I want to record my acoustic-electric guitar on Garageband (which came with the Air).
I don't want to buy a guitar that has a USB. I have a cable with a 3.5 mm headphone jack on both ends like the one pictured here on this website http://www.bestdealaz.com/item.php?id=628 (i didn't buy it from this site though).
I connected a 6.3 mm guitar adapter (http://www.ebay.com/bhp/headphone-guitar-adapter) to this cable. Then I connected one end of the cable to my guitar and the other end to the Headphone/Microphone jack on the left side of the MBA.
I saw how other people were saying to go to System Preferences / Sound and then change audio output to audio input.
    I can't do that. I tried.
    Please help!
    Thank you.

    Hello Massimo Pascucci,
The issue that you are facing when creating an endpoint with internal loadbalancer is the limitation of not allowing same ports to be listening under a single cloud service. This reason for this is that there is a limitation of only one private IP (Also
known as the Internal load balanced IP) per cloud service.
There is also a limitation on the Internal load balancer more than one port to be published per load balancer:

  • Is there some sort of adapter that i can use to plug my electric guitar into, so that i can record music into garage band?

Probably but for that kind of expertise I would ask the experts in the GarageBand forum.

  • Recording electric guitar into reason

I do a lot of hobbyist home recording and i want to be sure im getting the best possible signals. I've got a standard issue electric fender stratocaster being played into a Presonus Firebox, thats interfacing with logic. is this the best way to take your electric guitar signal into logic? does anyone recommend putting anything between the guitar and the firewire interface? maybe to give the signal a little more drive or warmth or anything to really get the best possible signal?
    thanks for the help!

  • Electric Guitar solution for the mini

I finally found something that looks like it will fit the bill of hooking up my electric guitar to the mini without spending $300-$1200 just for the recording box. M-Audio very recently released the JamLab for Mac and PC, it seems to be around $60 shipped from various online retailers. So if you are thinking about, or were thinking about doing this with your mini, check out the JamLab here.
It actually does more than I wanted, I already have a Korg Toneworks PX4 Guitar processor for effects and on-the-road practice, but if you don't own one of these and want something that not only records from your 1/4" guitar cable plug, but also does effects/stompbox processing, this may be it for you as well.
    Jan J.

I only want something to plug into GarageBand too. $300-$1200 is just a bit much to ask for something that is really just a USB or FireWire soundcard when all you just want to do is mess around as a hobbyist in GarageBand.
Install the Developer Tools for Tiger, you will get AU Lab, a very powerful audio utility that takes full advantage of Core Audio's power. This image from the conceptual development phase on the developers site doesn't even do the finished app in action justice, and the short blurb written there shows that the person writing it up doesn't even know what the app can do. This is a better description--AU Lab is very efficient and has a very high performance and low overhead audio engine capable of supporting multiple outputs, and advanced routing features such as send buses and sidechain buses and even that doesn't even tell you all that it is. Imagine full control of your audio subsystem, a virtual audio cable, real time effects processing, multiple generators, audio sidechains, audio busses, outputs control and remapping and midi mapping and effects. Low level raw access to the audio subsystem in your Mac! Take control of the input/output ports on core audio devices and remap them and simulate surround sound and other cheeky things.
You can pull off the same tricks as Audio Hijack. It was, after all, to show developers what is possible to do with audio on OS X.
If the GT Player Express software bundled with JamLab won't allow you to record because they want you to buy an upgrade for the software, I'll just rip the audio streams passing through OS X direct to an audio file on the disk with Audio Hijack or AU Lab.
    Happy GarageBanding!
    Jan J.
