Imic sound input type

hello all,
i purchased a new imic after the older one went dead .
although i am not sure what caused it to stop functionning , i suspected it might have fried due to too much power in the sound input.
i've read from several posts here and also from griffins site that it is ok to choose either microphone or line as sound input .
still, isn't there a risk when using phone input compare to line ? i wouldnt want to damage my new imic .
thanks for any advice .

my cassette player's headphone output has no such button.
Whatever volume control the cassette player has would control the headphone level.
If using the cassette's Line-Outs is an option, that's always a better choice, quality-wise, but in a pinch headphone will do (I jack an iPod into my PA System routinely and that's a headphone-out to a line-in on the console)

  • Sound input possibilities for Quicksilver

    Is the Griffin imic the only low-cost option out there for feeding line level output from a stereo system into a G4 Quicksilver (2001)? I just upgraded from my G3 beige and am missing the A/V personality card already! Ideally I'd like something that might work both in OSX and OS9. I've read mixed reviews about the imic and was just wondering if there are any other options. What about a PCI card?

    http://www.m-audio.com/products/en_us/Revolution71-main.html
    This product looks like it is more geared toward output, but it provides a 24 bit stereo 1/8" mic line in and some recording software. Unless you have a bunch of speakers and want 7.1 surround sound, using the built-in mic option on the rear panel of your computer is the cheapest and easiest way to import sound in both OS 9 and OS X. The m-audio card seems to support OS 9.2.2, but only in stereo operation (left and right channel only), not all 7 channels or sub woofer channel. I say stick with the standard mic in.
    Besides price, if you like versatility with sound, one of the coolest things you can buy is the mbox from Digidesign. I write my own music so I wanted something to record with, but I find myself utilizing it even more for importing audio or other little things. It comes with Protools, but you don't have to use it. You can hook up professional monitors, and have two independent input channels that sound totally professional. The line-ins have their own volume control, and provide a few different input types. You can easily switch from mono to stereo, pan left and right in the mix, and independently adjust speaker volume from headphone volume, since they are on two separate channels. It is all right there on the external interface, and takes over all sound operations of your computer. If you want to turn up the volume, you can no longer do so from the keyboard, you have to turn up the volume knob on the mbox. It basically becomes a little sound control center. The mobox was one of the best investments I ever made. I have absolutely no complaints about it, other than it doesn't work with OS 9-at least the new ones don't. I have an mbox 2- the original mbox will work with OS 9, but is limited to which versions of OS X it will work with. Here's the link to the mbox 2-
    http://www.digidesign.com/index.cfm?navid=104&langid=100&itemid=23596
    You may be more interested in the mbox mini, a cheaper version of the mbox. If you look for them used, you can get them for pretty cheap. Digidesign sells them for $330, but on ebay you can find them new for $250. I remember seeing a deal for them a little while ago for $199.
    Maybe I should've asked this earlier, but what exactly are you trying to achieve? Just importing stereo sound?

  • How do you stop an MBP headphone-in from constantly re-detecting input type?

    I'm a professional music producer - I work for majors.
    I only use "regular" ("studio quality") headphones in my MBP, for reference on-the-move.
    I have had the same issue on two consecutive MBP's now.
    Every time there is the slightest movement or slight strain on the jack - the MBP silences the input (and, I assume tries to detect what type of input there is at the socket). This can happen when adjusting the MBP in ones lap, table... it can happen at every movement of machine or cable.
    The jack doesn't have to visibly move. I have to take out the jack wait a second and re-insert. This doesn't even work every time.
    So: How does one manually set and lock the input type?

    Vogon wrote:
    Indeed it would, thanks.
    I have a number of USB related devices but I don't want to carry extra equipment around or want to use headphones other than those I am used to in the studio... Ones you can wear for extended periods too. Unless you know of studio quality USB headphones?
    Especially when my >$2500  MBP claims to have a usable headphone socket. ;-)
    So, there is no user option to turn off a feature which interupts work like this?
    I don't think that it is a 'feature' my bet is on 'failure' instead.
    I think that the connection between the 3 pole connector on your studio quality headphones (a model would be nice to know) and the 4 pole socket on the Mac is not good. Can you reproduce this with a standard pair of Apple earbuds (a test only) or is it limited to whatever your headphones are?
    I will also suggest a USB interface, they are very small (put it in your pocket, buy 2) the Logitech version is in the picture below.
    If you do choose the 3.5mm to USB option this one (Turtle Beach Amigo II) is the best I have used.
    Requiring no drivers (on a Mac) it sounds at least as good as the internal audio does.

  • G4 and microphone suitable for sound input port

    I'm looking into getting started with podcasting and I need help with selecting a microphone. I'm on a G4 desktop machine with a sound input port, any suggestions as to the tech spec or manufacturer of a suitable microphone would be most appreciated.
    Thanks.
    G4 desktop   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

    Hi, Neil -
    This Apple KBase article provides some info with regard to microphone selection -
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=18275
    Scroll down the article to the G4 section that matches your G4 model.
    Many users have gone to using the Griffin iMaic adapter, since it permits a wide variety of micophones to be used. There's a link near the bottom of the above article to Griffin's iMic page.

  • Sound input fine, but no sound?

    I have a Mac Mini 2,0Ghz and have a DVD-player's audio output plugged into the sound input of the Mini (RCA>3,5mm plug). The Mini's sound output is connected to my stereo. I can play iTunes songs without problems. Now I want to listen to an external source.
    I look in sound preferences on the Input tab and I see the Input Level bar indicating sound input, I pause the DVD and the bar stops fluctuating, fine so far. I make sure that the output volume is adequate and then I turn on the stereo, but there is no sound. I mak sure that there is sound by checking with iTunes, I can hear the songs.
    Do I have to switch over to the Input selection or something to hear the sound from the DVD-player? I come from using Windows and there you'd have to enable the input.
    How do I get output from the input?

    Audio input has to go to an application. Most applications that use audio input will have a passthrough mode (e.g. QuickTime Pro has a passthrough volume control in its recording window). LineIn is nothing but passthrough.
    It's like the keyboard. Nothing happens if you type with no application listening. Whether or not the typing shows on the screen is up to the application (e.g. Terminal will not show anything while you enter a password).

  • Sound Input Problems Using iChat..Inadvertent Loss of Microphone?

    My father-in-law just bought a new 17 inch iMac with an Intel dual core, whole ten yards. Great machine. However, when using iChat with his family he's noticed the the sound input goes dead and then he's constantly searching around with on screen controls to get it back again. I thought it might have something to do with his mighty mouse being that you can sync applications with it. I've walked him through the system preferences to get the sound back, but its seems to be a niggling weird type of issue. Any suggestions?

    Hi Phillip,
    Selelcting mute is normally a mouse and click item or from the Video menu of iChat (It does not seem to have a keyboard short cut).
    The Mighty Mouse does seem to be the bset place to look.

  • Sound input behaving strangely.

    First of all, here's what I have:
    PowerMac G4 mirrored drive doors with OS 10.4.3
    An 8-year-old microphone from a beige G3.
    The problem: The sound input doesn't seem to work. I tested the microphone on an older blue & white G3 and it was fine. On this computer, no voice registers. The sound input volume is turned to maximum.
    This is the first time I've ever tried to use this microphone with this computer. I've never found it necessary before.
    In the microphone calibration section of the system preferences, it is clearly registering ambient noise from the room, as the blue bars to light continuously. When I speak into the microphone, nothing happens.
    Microphone calibration is not recognizing any commands.
    I'm sure the Mic is plugged into the correct place. (circle with two arrows pointing at each other.) And my microphone is set to "line in" in the preferences, which is the only option available.
    Is my mic simply too old for this computer? What can I do? Any help is greatly appreciated.
    Ian

    You need a mic preamp for use with the MDD (self-powered mic). Some users use the iMic (USB audio interface.) You can see this unit at the Apple Store.

  • Sound input - iBook

    Hey guys,
    I'm on my way to convincing my mum to purchase a Mac computer. An iBook would be ideal, however she needs sound input so she can record things from a PA desk into garageband. I can do it on my iMac (my friend has done it before) and said I can, so I'm assuming I can. However it would be great for her, portability wise.
    Is there an option/accessory/something that has audio in/line in or something like that which will help in this situation?
    Thanks HEAPS guys
    edit: This was posted in the iBook forum and they suggested I come here. There was an accessory posted from Griffin. http://www.griffintechnology.com/products/imic2/index.php - Have any of you had experience with using the iMic in the way that my mum is needing?
    Thanks!
    - leighton

    The iMic is exactly what I was about to recommend (and then I saw your edit B-)>
    The iMic is not going to be the highest quality, but for a few quid, it's a very good and inexpensive solution. I used one for about a year and was happy with it.
    And BTW, we used it with mixing consoles on an iBook as well, so it should work for your Mum just fine.
    Good luck! --HangTime [Will Compute for Food] B-|>

  • Sound Input Jack

    I use my sound input jack to digitize music from my stereo and also for a microphone for voice recognition software. Switching the lines requires crawling behind my desk, and I'd like a more convenient solution. I've searched for an extention cord that would accommodate the extra-long, 4-conductor microphone plug (as well as the standard plug from the stereo) so I can switch the cords from my seat, but I can't find one. Can anyone suggest a retail source? Or can I use a microphone with a USB connection?
    Many thanks!

    Try a Griffin iMic.

  • Struts 1.1 Iterate through input types of image

    Hi everyone,
    I'm using struts 1.1, and specifically the logic:iterate tag. Basically I'm looping through a List of Users. I print out username, userAccessLevel, two image input types (edit or remove). My actionForm associated with the JSP contains the List of Users.
    A User object has an AccessButtons field (among other things),
    an AccessButtons object contains two Buttons objects named edit and remove,
    a Button object has 3 String fields, x, y, and name, and a "pressed()" function
    Essentially I want the Action class to be able to pick up what button was pressed on the ActionForm. Specifically both the user and edit/remove action associated with the button. The code I have so far in the JSP is:
    <logic:iterate id="users" name="accessForm" property="users" indexId="index">
    <bean:define id="ssn" name="users" property="ssn"/>
    <bean:define id="accessButtons" name="users" property="accessButtons"/>
    <bean:write name="users" property="fullname"/>
    <bean:write name="users" property="accessLevel"/>
    <html:image property="accessButtons.edit" src="images/edit.gif" border="0" alt="edit" indexed="true"/>
    <html:image property="accessButtons.remove" src="images/remove.gif" border="0" alt="remove" indexed="true"/>
    </logic:iterate>
    This displays the desired output, but it doesn't help be differentiate the user for which the button was pressed. I left out some of the HTML formatting stuff to keep the code clean.
    Anyone have any ideas? I hope I explained what I wanted clearly and concisely...

    yes, this is a problem, isn't it...
    I would suggess make each user iterration include a separate form tag set and have a hidden field with the user id. but I think this will still have a problem of knowing which of the 2 buttons were pressed. There is a problem here, cuz Netscape 7 sends the button name of the button and button.x and button.y, whereas IE 6 only sends the button.x and button.y, and not the button as is... which presents a problem to figuring out what was clicked. (Plain submit type buttons seem to be fine for submitting). At least, I guess just check for the existance of the button_name.x to see which was pressed, but you still need the user ID in the forms.

  • Is there an easy way to run an Ajax function from input type=file to test the file name in DB?

    I've had the <input type="file">  ... <cffile ...> thing going for a few years now.
    There is a database where the uploaded file names are stored once the files are uploaded to the server.  It sees things in terms of problems and stores uploaded file name accordingly with the ProbID prepended onto the file name; e.g., MyPicture.jpg would end up in the designated directory and databawe as P416_MyPicture.jpg.  This allows user to store pictures with the same name in different problems without a conflict.  There has been an issue with certain characters (e.g., spaces, +, #, etc.) causing problems when they are in file names so we have come up with a way using the <cffile ... rename> to replace these chars with _.  This means that MyPic+.jpg would end up being P416_MyPic_.jpg.
         This is where the problem appears.  If someone were to upload MyPic+.jpg after someone else uploaded MyPic_.jpg in the same problem, then the + file would overwrite the _ file before the system knew they had a problem.  And there is now way to restore the original file without going to the system backup and doing so – which is a whole other story … especially, if the person doesn’t tell anyone.
         The logical solution would be to be able to test the new final file name (the name after making the substitutions mentioned above) against the existing files in the database before you went from the page where the <input type=file> control to the associated _action.cfm page where the <cffile> object is located.  Given that this seems to be the province of Ajax, this would seem like a natural use of the really interesting technology.  I have can determine the file name from the onChange action on the <input type=File> so that this would be the place for Ajax to come to the rescue by looking up the final file name and then letting the user know whether the resultant name is a unique within the database or not.  If so, I'll just enable the Add button which sets right next to the <input > control and let them upload it.  If not, I'll put up an error message telling them that this file already exists in the system.
         This would be the perfect solution.  It would let me do some Ajax stuff like I've wanted to do for the past year, but never have had the time to do because this is the project that won't go away.  This is, in fact, the last thing of any consequence that remains to do on this 2-1/2 year nightmare – be careful what you wish for.  If I can get this done this week, then maybe I can finally take a weekend off … maybe it will finally come to an end.
         Which finally leads to my question:  I'm looking for some tips on how to get this thing going since I can barely spell Ajax.  I've got a book and looked at some stuff online about CF and Ajax, but a good example or two or three would be worth a day's worth of poking around on the web and in my books.
         Thanks in advance for any suggestions, ideas, help, whatever.
    Len

    Adam,
         Thank you for your suggestion, but, after spending the night working with Ben Forta's CF8, vol 2, Chap 34, working with <cfajaxproxy>, I was able to do exactly what I wanted and it appears, after some testing, to work exactly as I had envisoned it should.
         I am now calling a JavaScript function (testFileName) from the onChage event on the <input type="file"> or Browse button, which calls my proxy.cfc that contains the server side of the equation.  This funciton testFileName (I've run out of cleaver function/file names).  The query contained therein hits the database to see if the passed in parameters can pull up an existing file.  If they do, the particulars (file name, data attahced, etc.) are returned to the JavaScipt procedure that puts up the error notice.  The user can then chose to either overwrite the file or quit.  Quiting leaves the your on the Attachment PopUp where he/she started with nothing being uploaded.
         Thanks again for your suggestion.  I appreciate your taking the time to do so.

  • Uploading a file using input type=file

    Hi,
    I'm not sure if I'm in the right place or not. If not can you please let me know where to find and answer for my question.
    I'm trying to upload a file in oracle self-service (online page) and I found that the input type=file will let me select the file so I place the input type inside my htp.formopen command.
    I used the following when opening the formopen
    htp.formOpen(my_link, 'post',null, 'multipart/form-data');
    then I created the <input type="file"> tag
    But when I send the link to my second page to see if the input type works I get the page not found error.
    I'm thinking that maybe is because my 2nd page doesnt have a parameter that will hold the file but right now I'm not sure how to declare the file variables.
    Do you have any idea what could be wrong?
    Thanks

    What does your form do when you submit it? Handling file uploads is a bit of a convoluted process. I'd recommend starting here for some guidance:

  • System Preferences Sound Input is stuck at Soundflower (64ch). I can't change it!

    So, I have a mid-2010 MacBook Pro running OS X Yosemite (latest version). (250GB HDD, 4GB RAM, 2.4 GHz)
    I wanted to record some commentary for my video and to use the mic I went into System Preferences > Sound > Sound Input.
    With my mic connected, I tried all of the 4 options (picture below), but then after closing and opening System Preferences again, the sound input is stuck on "Soundflower 64ch).
    When I try to change it (e.g. Built-In), it "crashes", but not really: It selects the option I clicked for a second or two, then the list disappears and says "No Input Devices" briefly, then the list reappears with "Soundflower 64ch" selected.
    Please help, I've tried some solutions I found online, like restarting the laptop, repairing disk permissions, even a code for Terminal.
    Thanks to anybody in advance.
    UPDATE: ****, I think my Mac is possessed or something. It shows the ring of death when my mouse is on the System Preferences window, and when I try to take a screenshot of the list itself, it lags and doesn't let me take it until "No input devices found" appears.

    Either remove "Soundflower" or refer to its developer for support.
    Any third-party software that doesn't install by drag-and-drop into the Applications folder, and uninstall by drag-and-drop to the Trash, is a system modification.
    Whenever you remove system modifications, they must be removed completely, and the only way to do that is to use the uninstallation tool, if any, provided by the developers, or to follow their instructions. If the software has been incompletely removed, you may have to re-download or even reinstall it in order to finish the job.
    I never install system modifications myself, and except as stated in this comment, I don't know how to uninstall them. You'll have to do your own research to find that information.
    Here are some general guidelines to get you started. Suppose you want to remove something called “BrickMyMac” (a hypothetical example.) First, consult the product's Help menu, if there is one, for instructions. Finding none there, look on the developer's website, say www.brickmymac.com. (That may not be the actual name of the site; if necessary, search the Web for the product name.) If you don’t find anything on the website or in your search, contact the developer. While you're waiting for a response, download BrickMyMac.dmg and open it. There may be an application in there such as “Uninstall BrickMyMac.” If not, open “BrickMyMac.pkg” and look for an Uninstall button. The uninstaller might also be accessed by clicking the Customize button, if there is one.
    Back up all data before making any changes.
    You will generally have to restart the computer in order to complete an uninstallation. Until you do that, there may be no effect, or unpredictable effects.
    If you can’t remove software in any other way, you’ll have to erase and install OS X. Never install any third-party software unless you're sure you know how to uninstall it; otherwise you may create problems that are very hard to solve.
    Trying to remove complex system modifications by hunting for files by name often will not work and may make the problem worse. The same goes for "utilities" such as "AppCleaner" and the like that purport to remove software.

    There's no reason to install a smaller hard drive. In some cases, it may decrease performance.
    Your MacBook Pro comes with a 5400 rpm hard drive, so what you can do is to install a smaller, 7200 rpm hard drive, so you will get a better performance. Any 2'5" SATA hard drive will work, but you can have a look at OWC for hard drives > http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/hard-drives/2.5-Notebook/
    HGST and Seagate hard drives have a good reputation, so you can purchase one of them
