Immediate boot after shutdown on 845pe max2

Got my brand new PC with a MSI 845PE MAX2 mainboard (MS-6704) in an AOPEN casing. Problem: if i select shutdown in WinXPpro the machine shuts down (even power-led is off). And then immediately it boots/starts again.
What could this be? I already removed all unnecessary cards, network connection, modem, second HDU, unplugged all USB devices. Turned off APM in the BIOS setting. Changed to an older type keyboard and mouse. Still same problem. All lastest drivers installed, lates BIOS (AMI 1.2) installed. All Xp service packs extra patches are installed.
Any suggestions? Switchg from S3 to S1 mode in ACPI standbystate doesnt make any difference. Turning off ACPI is a bad idea, as the machine wont boot XP anymore.
Pressing the on/off button the machine shuts down as expected and doesnt turn itself on anymore. Where can i find more info on the S1, S3 modes etc?

Indeed it was a faulty powersupply. I tried with a Qtec 400W and that one works perfectly. So thank you Assaf for the suggestion. I already tries all i could find in all newsgroups, just this was my last resort. Now to convince my supplier to get me a decent (quiet) powersupply!

  • How long does it take your mid 2010 iMac to boot after shutdown?

My imac has suddenly become alot slower upon boot up and i actually just bought this computer a few days ago. it's taking about 30+ seconds to boot up after a shutdown is that normal?

If you had a black out you may have damaged the machine if it wasn't hooked up to a battery backup. I would recommend you contact AppleCare (the number is in your owners manual) and see if they can help. One thing I would strongly advise is investing in a decent battery backup system, this will help with power surges and if you are in front of the computer when you have a black out provide enough battery power to do an orderly shutdown. If you get one that connects via USB to your computer you can also set some preferences such as what to do when the power comes back on.

  • Equium A300D-16C. not booting after shutdown.

Please, this is a problem i seem not to understand. I have been using my Equium A300d-16c laptop without no problem for over a year until yesterday's evening. i was installing a software(nokia PC suite) which prompted for a restart. the shutting down was normal and for it to restart was a problem. it displays nothing but a blank screen. It is evident it does not boot as when i press the power button it goes of immediately. Only the power indicator is on. Another thing i notice is that the DVD-ROM reads any disc put inside but there is no display of any sort.
My first reaction was that it may be overheating, so i cleaned the cooling vents and blew away dusts from all compartments. but still the problem persists. Please i seek to know what may be the problem before taking it to for repairs. Help Needed. Thanks.

Thanks. There is nothing displayed on the screen. it does not seem to boot into anything, as the powere goes off immediately when the power button is pressed. I have tried to change the ram modules, but still the same problem. i dont know what kind of hardware failure could cause this as it was working fine untill the shutdown. Thanks for the concern.

  • K8N Neo4 initial boot after shutdown lockup problem

First, I would like to thank everyone on this board for helping me solve all but one of the many issues I had getting my system up and running over the past three days, and you didn't even know it!  I found many problems similar to mine but I don't believe any exactly like it:
I can shut down my system normally however when I boot up it hangs just prior to the windows initiation screen where you get your mouse curser.  I do a cold boot from there and it posts until I get to the screen for a safe restart or normal restart etc., I hit normal restart and it finishes the boot just fine.  It does this consistantly, outside of this my system has been rock solid for the past couple days, I built it Wednesday.
Its almost as though it is forcing me to go through the safe restart process even though I had a clean shutdown.
    So far with no effect:
I increased my memory voltage to 2.8V, this helpd my old system with post problems and solved one on this board. (RAM running at 2.8 for 10 months with no problems on my old system)
Disconnected the IDE HD drives (I boot to the SATA 1/2 raid)
Changed my boot order all around
Disabled my unused SATA 5/6 (SiS)
Reloaded windows XP with the IDE drives disconnected
Disconnected and removed the printer driver
    Anthing else?  Ideas?

Antec Trupower 550 2.0, dual 12V rails @ 19 amps, Still had the problem with several drives disconnected.  Bummed, I can,t figure it out...I think I will go to a line by line post to see exactly where its hanging.  I may have mis-stated, I don't think it clears the SATA raid load on the first try.

  • G4 Power Mac (MDD) - has trouble booting after shutdown

I have a Power Mac G4 MDD (1.25Ghz) that is having issues when it is shut down. The power button on the front of the machine does not start the computer every time. Sometimes it works, sometimes I need to wait a while before it will work. When the button is pressed, it does not light up or anything.
I have noticed that if I sleep the computer it always seems to wakeup when the front button is pressed. But if I shut down the G4, is does not always bootup.
I have also performed multiple restarts when performing software updates, and they always seemed to work fine.
I have changed the Saft battery inside - it was at about .4v
I have performed a CUDA/PMU reset using the button on the motherboard, and followed the Apple procedure. (disconnect power, and accesories, press reset button, wait 10 seconds, reconnect, restart) It did not restart right away, had to wait 20 minutes or so.
The G4 has a new installation of Tiger, with all of the updates.
I have identified that the PSU is dropping the standby voltage on Pin 1. It does not do it consistently, but when the 25v is missing from Pin 1, the G4 does not start. After a couple of minutes, I can see the voltage return to Pin 1, and the unit starts no problem.
Before I look for a replacement PSU (which seem pretty expensive), I was wondering if anyone knows if this is purely a PSU issue, or does the CUDA/PMU influence the standby voltages?

With the "sometimes" nature of the problem, it could be the front panel board, a much cheaper replacement than a PSU. An Apple tech told me that one way to test the front panel board was to find one of the first Apple USB keyboards for the original iMac. The early ones have a power button like the old ADB boards that overrides the internal board/button. He said that, should the Mac start reliably from the old keyboard, then there is trouble with the front panel board. The Apple model number for the USB board with power button is M2452.
Very helpful forum member japamac has a test procedure for the MDD PSU on his site here:
    http://jcsenterprises.com/Japamacs_Page/Blog/D275729F-09DA-4FBB-96B3-BEEEB2C0461 9.html
You'll need a multimeter to check the voltage levels.

G5 dual 2ghz.  Been unplugged for a while. Powers up but no video or power to usb keyboard.  Boots up fine in safe mode, restart into normal mode ok. After shutdown, back to same issue.  What's happening?

I keep seeing people ask and the advice to replace if it has been unplugged, but really have nothing to confirm that from my experiences.
My experience is that a weak or dead battery can cause much more than date and time issues.
I have seen it time and time again.
Deal with used machines and you will quickly learn....
I'll give no "recipe" or set list of symptoms, but the range of irregularities that can occur make it a quick and easy first line of troubleshooting, especially when the machine has been off the mains for a few months.
Why fight mysterious maladies and troubleshoot with the knowledge that the PRAM battery is beyond it's useful life.
    Maybe they recharge?
Not likely. They are chemically nasty, disposable, one way discharge batteries.
    They aren't Lithium-ion batteries

  • Keyboard-WAKE/BOOT-UP with 845PE Max2 (v2.0) ??

Maybe you got this question before, but:
Is it NOT possible to start/boot this motherboard by using the keyboard??
I have not seen any options in the BIOS (flashed to the latest v3.1)... however - there's an option to use the keyboard to wake-up from the S3-state (stand-by)... but that's not really useful for me!
I want to power-on the machine by using the keyboard and/or mouse only!!! (The PSU handles 2A on the 5VSB trail)
I thought this was standard on most motherboards nowadays but I can't really see this on the MSI 845PE Max2...
Have I missed something out?  (Is this a BIOS issue only? The realtime-clock-power-on the system works just fine - so I suppose the keyboard feature could be implemented fairly easy??)
    Please help!
    Thanks,
    Tobias Nilsson

Gosh, I've tried it!  S3 state is not an option!!! (but S1 is?)
What I want is simply this (one scenario of many):
    * plug in the power to the psu/computer
    * turn the damn thing on using the keyboard!
(that's because I'm using a fine logitech cordless keyboard and I'm just so cool  :]  I don't want/need to pressing the "power-on" button on the computer case!)
Gosh, I've done this on the MSI (k7n420) and the ASUS motherboards for years...
Well, guess I've to talk to MSI... (wish me luck...)

Problem: Within days of building computer in January the computer started to automatically reboot seconds after shutdown or entering sleep mode.
    Attempted Fixes:
-Total re-install of Windows + BIOS
    -Updated BIOS via LiveUpdate
-Rolled back to initial BIOS that came with MB
-Changed between registry option of "PowerdownAfterShutdown" between "0" and "1"
    -Disabled Wake-Up Events in BIOS
-Changed to OS controlled Wake-Up events
-Changed "Restore after AC Power Loss" to off in BIOS
-Ordered a new PSU, replaced PSU
Regardless the fix, if I try to shutdown - the computer reboots within a few seconds.  If I try to put it in sleep mode, it boots right back up.  The only way to get the computer to shut off is by manually turning off the PSU.
I've seen that there have been frequent power-cycle issues with this particular motherboard in comments on newegg.com, just wondering if this issue has been encountered and if there is a fix available?

Is this with no case wire connections to any of the headers? i.e. if you start it by shorting the on/off pin headers with a screwdriver tip.
    Yeah, as shown here.
    http://www.computer-how-to-guide.com/motherboard-troubleshooting/motherboard-post-test-how-to/
Shorted on with flathead, boots up fine.  After flipping off the PSU to turn it off and then flipping the PSU back on, the dang thing waits a few seconds and boots right back up.  No short required.  At this point I think a ghost might be living in my computer.

  • Unable to STARTUP after SHUTDOWN

    HELP !!
My main experience is with M/S SQL Server. I am taking an Oracle class and am having a really weird problem. If I log into SQL Plus with SYSDBA privileges and initiate a SHUTDOWN IMMEDIATE, it shuts down successfully, but I am never able to startup (although I can startup from the Database Control or by re-booting). This is a new install for school and I have never been able to make it work. and Yes, I have waited more than a minute for the LISTENER to try and re-start.

  • WinXP and MSI 845PE MAX2

    Got the following problem.
    I've just purchased an MSI 845PE MAX2 (MS-6704) with a PIV 2,4ghz 533 processor and 512mb DDR PC2700.
Onboard USB/FIREWIRE/LAN and ATA133raid are enabled. My graphics card is a Matrox G400 which is using IRQ10.
    I have 3 HDD's installed together with 1 DVD-ROM and 1 3,5" diskdrive.
I have WinXP proffesional installed without any servicepack.
When I boot my system, everythings goes fine. I see the XP bootscreen and so. After the bootscreen, the pc normally goes to the sign-in screen. Well not for me.
After the bootscreen my monitor goes black, not standby just black and the system doesn't do anything.
Booting in save mode is no problem.
I have also disabled all the onboard stuff and booted the system with only my graphicscard in it. There is no IRQ that is used twice.
    Can somebody help me?
    thx

    Yeah, strange isn't?!
I've installed the RAID drivers during installation (HIT F6 if you want to install a third party driver)
Finished installation, restarted the pc and it gave this problem.
    So for short:
    Builded a new pc.
    Everything worked.
Installed WinXP on a new HDD (80gb WD)
Made 1 partition of 8gb NTFS, the rest is unallocated.
Installed WinXP without any service packs
    XP installed the drivers for:
USB/FIREWIRE/LAN/RAID/SOUND and also for some PCIcards: SCSIcard without bios, SB Live.
I had also a Pinnacle TVcard placed in the system but XP doesn't have any drivers included for it.
    After finishing installation, rebooted.
    XP wouldn't start.
    Removed all pci cards.
    same problem
    disabled USB/FIREWIRE/LAN/SOUND
    still the same problem.
Maybe a driver problem of a pci card which I removed but still is 'installed' in XP?

  • After shutdown I have to log in twice.  The first time it starts to load, then goes black, then gives me login page again.  Do you think I have a virus?  Or is this Yosemite bug?

Just updated to Yosemite on my MBP.  After shutdown now when I login, it starts the process (the bar starts to move), then the screen goes black, then it asks me to login again and this time it is a successful startup.  Is this a Yosemite bug or do I have a virus?  I also have some funny tiling on the screen at youtube and some other websites.  Another bug?

Reinstalling OS X Without Erasing the Drive
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the main menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall OS X: Select Reinstall OS X and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.

  • ITunes RADIO is not working.  "iTunes could not connect to the iTunes Store. Make sure your internet connection is active and try again." Try as I may, as many as ten attempts, trying to connect after restart, after shutdown, nothing works. Just so -  iTu

    iTunes RADIO is not working.
“iTunes could not connect to the iTunes Store. Make sure your internet connection is active and try again.” Try as I may, as many as ten attempts, trying to connect after restart, after shutdown, nothing works. Just so …
iTunes STORE not “connectable” with my otherwise perfectly-working internet connection, viable, up and running for all other uses.
Simply put, firstly, I can't connect to the internet when I click on Radio.  People are quite suspicious that this is Apple incompetence or your company's famous arrogance for this commonly-suffered problem that you won't or “can’t” fix.
Read the many web comments and you won’t be pleased with yourselves: the suspicion is that if you ruin internet radio on iTunes, Apple will somehow make more money on music downloads, etc. Bull.
Also, thirdly, my old playlist of 20 or so internet radio stations in the Ambient category STILL PLAYS !
Then fourth, I installed the latest available version of QuickTime Player 7.app Version 7.6.6 but it didn’t solve the problem either. I had QuickTime Player.app Version 10.2, but substituted what Apple website said was the latest, LOWER NUMBERED QuickTime Player version of 7.6.6
Fifth, I can't connect to iTunes store no matter what I do or what user group's advice I try. So I can’t buy or download anything from iTunes. Bad for business.
Sixth, I updated to the latest version of iTunes but this weird problem remains. All suggested Apple fixes or user group fixes are useless. Where is Apple’s famous technical competency, vaunted customer support?, and user-friendly product reputation? Get it back, please.
Solve this problem of yours ASAP for us, your numerous disgruntled, dissatisfied customers of iTunes. You can do better, should, and really –in all fairness- must.
    ===============================================================
NOTE:  no password for iTunes exists in my Keychain. Is this a problem?
Apple ACCOUNT ID, and iTunes ID password, works but not to access iTunes with my healthy internet connection.
Apple store id It works via direct internet connetion but not through iTunes.  Very strange.

  • Startup open ORA_12514 error after Shutdown, just upgraded 9i to 10g

    Hi,
Noobe here, again! Cheers and happy New Year to all!
How should I edit script to start db that has been shutdown prior to backup?
We are having a problem with backups, failure is occurring executing SQL*Plus startup after shutdown. I successfully upgraded our 9i to 10g, 10.2.0.5.0 on Windows server 2003, 32-bit. We have a back_script.bat that runs all this, the only edits that I had to make within this were the names for the new Oracle services, but that is not a problem. When I run through the actions in the batch file, it fails at the sql>startup open; action, throws the error "ORA-12514 TNS:listener does not currently nkow of service requested in connect descriptor" What is different here between 9i and 10g that now this doesn't work? By commenting out the line calling our oracle_stop_start.sql I am getting successful >exp dumps, but there could be processes running 'cause I'm not stopping everything before proceeding with the export.
I have a complete image of the physical server running in a virtual that I am able to test on. Hopefully I'll not put too much info in here, but here is some background! Both the batch file and little stop_start script predate my involvement.
Here are the pertinent statements in our backup_script.bat:
    SET NLS_LANG=AMERICAN_AMERICA.UTF8
    SET ORACLE_SID=wind
net stop Windchill3_MethodServer (the third party application that uses the database wind)
    sqlplus "system/manager@wind as sysdba" @D:\ptc\windchill\backups\oracle_stop_start
    exp system/manager@wind owner=guest file=......\oracle_backup.dmp.....etc, etc, etc
    Here is oracle_stop_start.sql
    shutdown immediate;
    startup open;
    quit
As stated earlier, this has worked at least since 2007 when the last edits were made to the batch file. Now it fails at the sql>startup open; throwing the error ORA-12514. I can duplicate this executing each statement in a dos shell. The shutdown command closes, dismounts and shuts down the database. I have tried changing the startup statement to sql>STARTUP OPEN wind; but that makes no difference. I have found that if I exit sql*plus and log back in /nolog (in the same shell window) then I can restart the instance, what I do is:
    sqlplus /nologsql>connect sys/* as sysdba;
    sql>startup open wind;
This does successfully start the Oracle instance, mount and open the database. How else might I do this? I can certainly duplicate these actions, adding the necessary lines to oracle_start_stop.sql, but is there a better & cleaner way to do this? Right now I just want to make these existing scripts work. Once that is done, then I'm going to investigate and learn more about RMAN and datapump export/import and update our backup procedures.
    Any thoughts & suggestions?
    Thank you,
    Tom

It might be a difference in behaviour between 9i and 10g. It looks like you are connecting through sql*net (sqlplus "system/manager@wind as sysdba), so the ORACLE_SID setting is not part of your connection. When the database is shutdown you are no longer connected to any database. When you issue the startup command the ORACLE_SID is not set so there is no service specified.
If you are running this on the database server, try setting the ORACLE_SID then running your script like:
    {code}sqlplus "system/manager as sysdba" @D:\ptc\windchill\backups\oracle_stop_start{code}
and you should still have the service set for your connection.
