IMovie '08, AVCHD and a Powermac G5

Ok, I know this is pretty early in the product release, but I was really excited yesterday when the new iLife arrived on my doorstep, and I could finally, properly, use my HDD based cam.
Jump to the point......It works GREAT, if I want to shoot in standard definition! When I attempt to import AVCHD format from the cam, I'm told it requires and Intel Mac!!!!! Yeah, I found the compatibility link on the Apple site, and it looked like it might be an issue, but jeez, my machine is a dual 2.3 Ghz G5 with 4GB RAM. I can see if they said "performance may really, really stink", but to not even allow the import?
Anyway, just kind of venting, and wondering if anyone in a similar situation has found a way to "trick" iMovie '08 into thinking it's running on an Intel Mac. 8-)
Thanks

Well, I guess I should have read this before buying a new video camera. When I saw the annoucement for iMovie '08 I was blown away and my reaction was that finally someone had created vidoe editing software for the rest of us. I really wasn't interested in the fiddling with converters and spending hours plying with tools. I found iMovie HD to be non-intuitive and simply never figured out how to use it. With iMovie '08 that all changed and I decided to buy a new Sony Camera, a HDR-CX7E to be specific and the camera is fantastic, I have been travelling overseas for the last 2 weeks and have lots of great footage. While I was away I installed the Sony software on my Windows machine and it worked flawlessly and was very quick, transferring the video files automatically within a few minutes. I assumed it would only get better once I could use my iMac at home.
Well today I purchased iLift '08 and I like what they have done with iPhoto but when I got message from iMovie that only Intel based Macs support AVCHD I almost fell off my chair. Given that there are other 3rd party tools on that support the G5 Mac there is clearly not a technical issue on the G5, I can only assume that Apple havn't written the G5 code yet which is disappointing given all the assurances. The Sony software imports and plays the AVCHD video on my old Windows XP Laptop with a 1.7GHz Pentium M quickly and easily so I can't see why there would be any problems on a G5. If there are performance issues with editing the content then they should at least move it off the camera onto the Mac so I can play it...instead it does nothing. I would like to know why Apple are finding it so hard to support AVCHD, it is the most important current standard for video, Sony's software doesn't run on a Mac, iMovie won't support it on a G5. My only option, having moved to a Mac almost 2 years ago and convinved most of my friends to convert, is to go back to using my Windows machine. As an early convert to the Mac I am being disadvantaged and the least I would expect is an answer from Apple on why this has happenned and what will be done about it. I have purchased a $2,000 camera and at the moment I can't even move the video to my Mac so I can erase the card. I have 2 x 4GB cards so it won't be long and they will be full.

  • Confused by Canon HF10, iMovie '09, AVCHD and file size

Please forgive me for these (probably) basic questions, but right now I feel like a complete idiot.
I recently purchased the Canon HF10. At first I thought it was going to be great to have an HD camcorder (a reason to buy an HDTV, too) for home movies, but evidentially this isn't going to be as nice as I thought. I don't understand the following:
I basically want to shoot video of softball games and save for family use - nothing professional here, just good/great quality home videos. Also, need to be able to stop-action and step through video for softball skill analysis.
    1. When I use iMovie '09 to import my video, it is taking forever to transfer. Why?
    2. If the internal memory is 16GB, why is it taking up >100GB when I transfer it to my computer? (I don't get it)
    3. What does the camera frame rate setting mean by i60 Normal or PF30 or Pf24? (again, I feel really stupid)
    4. Is iMovie '09 the right app or is there something else? If something else, why? Again, I basically want to shoot video of softball games and save for family use - nothing professional here, just good/great quality home videos. Also, need to be able to stop-action and step through video for softball skill analysis.
Thanks for understanding my lack of knowledge and all your help and insight is appreciated!
    SP

Regarding stop action, this camera has the ability for you to take stills while video is recording. It's pretty interesting. Even better, iMovie lets "Add Still Frame to Project." Also if you play video from iMovie Project or Event window's, you can easily view one frame at a time by repeatedly pressing the left or right arrow.
Hard disk storage is cheap now, save up and buy a drive to archive your video. That way later on you could re export your movies to an HD compatible format since burning to DVD as your doing now is not HD.
Also, yes definitely use 60i for action video. This camera really does a great job.
The thing about 30p/24p with this camera is that the resolution is reduced: 60i=1920x180 pixels whereas 30p and 24p modes on this camera is 1440x1080.

  • Importing AVCHD and DCIM folders into iMovie that someone has sent me. They live on my desktop. How do I bring them into an event library?

Someone has sent me the AVCHD and DCIM folders to import into iMovie. They live on my desktop. How do I bring them into an event library?

    DCIM contains only stills.jpg ...
AVCHD is a highly complex file structure:
the 'video iself' is within STREAM as .mts, plus corresponding .cpi files in the CLIPINF ...
if the structure is intact, you go via File/Import/Camera Archive …
WITHOUT such a complete structure, the mts are not readable for iM and the automatic conversion routines don't get triggered. you have to manually convert/rewrap with 3rd party tools.-
the pics/jpegs can be imported via Finder/drag'n drop.-

  • AVCHD and iMovie

Do you know any, if iMovie support new AVCHD video format ? I am would like buy new camera Sony HDR-SR7E with High resolution AVCHD and with USB2 cable ,but until now I don't know, if iMovie support format AVCHD and if is possible import and edit movies to iMovie the same simple as with others MiniDV camcorders with FireWire .Until now I have Sony PC1000 and I am would like change this for better....

Advanced High Definition (AVCHD) isn't supported by Apple.
So the answer is "no". You can't really edit AVCHD anyway, and you need a firewire to import to iMovie.
The cameras are awesome, I agree, but not suited for imovie.

  • AVCHD and iMovie 08

Ok, I tried to do a search as to not clutter the discussion forums any more than they are.
I am considering purchasing the new Canon HG10. It uses AVCHD. Now I know that there is a lot of dicussion on this. So .. here is my question.
I understand the iMovie 08 imports it in and converts it to a Quicktime format of some sort. How does this effect it being "HD Quality"? Does it stay in the same size and quality? I know that AVCHD is a complicated compression but I just want to know if it impairs the quality a lot by this process.
Also when burning these files do they burn in HD? IE: Do I still need to play them on a particular player or use specific media to burn them?
I am sorry for the N00BIE questions but I am a Noobie when it comes to this stuff.
Thanks for any information you can provide to me.

    This couldn't be more wrong.
AIC is lossless, indeed when converting your compressed AVCHD file, AIC decompresses it and stores each and every frame as a key frame (full quality) hence the large file sizes.
That couldn't be more wrong! I thought I'd be original and change "this" to "that"! You probably shouldn't speak in absolutes, unless you are absolutely sure of what you are talking about and absolutely clear in what you mean. I'm not sure whether your understanding is at fault or your clarity in expressing yourself, so I will explain below.
I'm pretty certain that you are mistaken about AIC being lossless. From what I have read, you are correct that AIC stores each frame as a key frame. However, you are incorrect in your assumption that a key frame is "full quality".
There are two primary ways that video compression algorithms work - spatial compression and temporal compression. Spatial compression involves compressing the data in each frame. This is often done using a discrete cosine transform (DCT) algorithm and is lossy. Simpler video compression algorithms like DV only use spatial compression.
Temporal compression schemes divide up frames into two types: key frames and predictive frames. There can be multiple types of predictive frames. The key frames are spatially compressed and occur throughout the video stream at regular or irregular intervals, depending on the format type. The frames in between key frames are drawn only by referencing the changes that have happened since the last key frame and the changes required before the next key frame. This greatly reduces the amount of data stored between key frames.
MPEG-2, for example, utilizes spatial compression in the key frames (I-frames) and temporal compression in the form of P-frames and B-frames. AVCHD also uses both spatial and temporal compression schemes, although AVCHD (based on H.264) is much more advanced than MPEG-2 in the algorithm by which this compression is achieved. AIC on the other hand, only uses spatial compression and thus every frame is a key frame (a key frame, but still a compressed frame!).
Where you may be correct (and where I may be incorrect) is in the conversion between AVCHD and AIC. The AIC codec is lossy, but the conversion between the two may be lossless IF AIC builds all of its frames directly from the AVCHD frames without decompressing and recompressing them.
Here is where my knowledge begins to run dry. If you have a reference or link to an article that establishes that the conversion between AVCHD and AIC is a lossless conversion, then I happily concede that no quality will be lost in converting between AVCHD and AIC. However, if you cannot establish this, then I will continue to play it safe and assume that there is some quality loss in the conversion. Thanks for tuning in

  • AVCHD and Snow Leopard (I-Movie / Final Cut Express)

AVCHD and Snow Leopard. I have been using Final Cut Express 4 and I-Movie 08 since they both came out. I have been using the same AVCHD camcorder (Cannon HG10) with both programs, and it has worked perfectly. Now I have installed 10.6 and 10.6.1 and now neither program will allow AVCHD transfer. Both recognize the camcorder but won't transfer.
A little poking around on the internet and I discovered that Snow Leopard won't support AVCHD (http://www.shedworx.com/no-avchd-in-snow-leopard). Third party web site mind you.
So far I agree it won’t work with AVCHD. Now since both programs were developed to use one of the most widely utilized formats in HD camcorders, again AVCHD, this accidental or intentional over site smells of Microsoft, not Apple.
I like some of the features of Snow Leopard but for me the video aspect is one of the top requirements. Apple had been the leader in the multimedia revolution and this mis-step with AVCHD is it’s typical of Apple.
I have just restored back to 10.5 and every thing is working again.
Now that were around the block here is the question. If anyone can come up with a solution…that does not include the used of third party software to convert, please let me know.
And to Apple, please fix this problem, I’m already hearing the complaints with QuickTime X, and seen the headlines, “Snow Leopard, is it Apples Vista?”.

This is, to be polite, a misunderstanding. Shedworx are being careless with their terminology.
    1. SL itself does not support AVCHD, but neither did Leopard.
    2. AVCHD support is built in to the movie editing software (iMOvie, FCE, FCP), exactly as it was in 10.5
    3. I am happily editing AVCHD from my HG10 in iMovie 09 and in FCP, in exactly the same way I did under 10.5
So you have a specific issue with your camera, you've taken that with some carelessness from Shedworx, and on that basis you've decided, incorrectly, that Apple does not/will not support AVCHD.
There were many cases under Leo where people reported problems getting their camera to communicate with iMovie. Solutions include:
    1. Trashing iMovie preference files
    2. Repairing permissions
    3. Copying the AVCHD folder tree from the camera to disk, and importing to iMovie from there
    4. Using MPEG Streamclip to convert the camera footage before importing to iMovie
5.Making sure the camera is running on mains power, not battery, and that it's in playback mode.

  • IMovie will open and then logout immediately

    Dear all,
I experienced a problem with iMovie today : I was importing video from my camcorder, and iMovie suddenly crashed.
I tried to launch it again, but it opened then logout, with a warning message asking me to send a report to Apple.
I tried to restart the Mac, to re install iMovie using Pacifist and the install DVD provided... but the same problem appears.
Pacifist says that the files installed in my HD are OK, no difference with the install pack.
    I need help, please...
    Thanks,

    Thanks for your quick answer.

Yes, you can import to an external drive by choosing it from the Import Screen.
Once an Event or Project is in iMovie, it is best to move it to the external using iMovie, so the Project does not lose links to the Event.
For full instructions on how to do this, see this link.

  • I am utilizing imovie 7.1 and I am trying to shorten the length of a clip.  How do I do that?

I am utilizing imovie 7.1 and I am trying to shorten the length of a clip.  How do I do that?

There are several ways to do this.
First, drag the clip from your Event to an iMovie Project.
In the Project, there are several options:
    1) Select the part of the clip you want to keep by dragging with your mouse. When you have it, right click within the selection and select "Trim to Selection". (You can also do this from the Edit Menu.)
    2) Select the part of the clip you want to cut by dragging with your mouse. When you have it, right-click within the selection and choose "Delete Selection". You can also do this from the Edit Menu.
There is a good Tutorial here. http://www.apple.com/findouthow/movies/imovie08.html#trimming

  • I imported videos from photo into iMovie when I set up iMovie (obvious mistake) and now iMovie doesn't work properly, nor can I move specific videos into a folder where I want them. How do I fix this?

I imported videos from photo into iMovie when I set up iMovie (obvious mistake) and now iMovie doesn't work properly, nor can I move specific videos into a folder where I want them. How do I fix this? I even tried deleting iMovie, bought a new copy and installed it, but the folder "iPhoto Videos" is still there and I can't get new clips loaded to iMovie, especially where I want them. Please help.

The iPhoto Videos do occasionally have problems. I've seen a lot of people write messages to this Discussion group describing similar problems. The only thing that seems to get around this problem is to pull the video clips out of iPhoto then import them directly into iMovie. Once the troubles with iPhoto Videos starts, I haven't yet seen anyone write back with something that they did to fix it.
The most difficult part of doing this is the movies in iPhoto might be a little difficult to track down. But you can create a smart alum that does that for you. Go to iPhoto > File Menu > New Smart Album:
Set the first pulldown menu to keyword, second to contains, then in the last box type Movie with a capital 'M'. Then click OK. This smart album more or less does as search of the whole iPhoto Library and only displays items that match your search tearm of "Movie" exactly. In that smart album then you can find the original Movies you want to move out of iPhoto and into iMovie, <CTRL> click on the Movie clip, then choose Reveal in Finder. That will jump you out of iPhoto temporarily and into the iPhoto Library folder. From there you can move that movie file to the desktop. Move all the clips you want, once they're all collected up go to iMovie and go to the File Menu > Import Files. Then point it to the desktop where you moved your video clips.
This will put all those videos into an Event folder in iMovie and bypass iPhoto Videos altogether.

  • Problems transferring my mini DV tapes to Imovie.  Slow and not working correctly

I have an older Mac Book (early 2008) and I am transferring my mini DV tapes to Imovie.  I borrowed a camcorder from my brother and have been importing the videos over the course of a few days.  Although I have plenty of storage, every command I made would take 5-10 minutes.  When the downloads were complete, I noticed the video either didn't come out (1 second clips) or they didn't come out well at all (screeching sounds, skipping, etc.) even though when I played the tapes on the camcorder, they worked fine.
I am in the process of improving my RAM from 2 GB to 4 but it's not fixing the problems I'm having with the transferring of the video tapes.
I want to manipulate these videos in Imovie (of my kids when they were babies) so i can create a mini-movie out of them.

Scene detection normally works, so there must be something going on with you old camera.
I have a bunch of old analog 8MM tapes that I imported through a DV 8MM Digital camera. These all came in as 1 long clip.
It is true you can delete a frame and then use iMovie to split the events. However, I have found a much quicker way that is non-destructive and allows you to enter the date metadata.
    1) Download and install MPEG Streamclip from Squared 5. You can google it.
    2) Drag your long clip into MPEG Streamclip. (If you don't know where it is, Right-click on the clip in the imovie event and select "Reveal in FInder".
    3) Think if dividing your long clip into Events (everything you shot on a single day, for example) - and Scenes (clips) - an individual unit of footage within the Event.
    4) Move the MPEG Streamclip playhead to the beginning of the 1st scene and press I for in point. Movie the Playhead to the last frame of the scene and press O for out point.
    5) Now, FILE/EXPORT TO DV. Save it to a location you can easily find, like a folder on your desktop. Give it name in the following format: clip-yyyy-mm-dd hh;mm;ss.dv This will preserve the time metadata for later when you are editing. You may want to have your camera handy so you can easily see this data.
    6) Repeat this process until you have all clips done. You should find that the playhead is still at the out point. You can simply type I and you have set the in point for a totally nondestructive capture of the next clip.
    7) Finally, open iMovie and use FILE/IMPORT/MOVIES... and navigate to the place where you saved all these clips. iMovie will import and sort into Events (you may have to check "split days into new events". Let it generate thumbnails and you are done.

  • HT1338 imovie keeps quiting and now it won't play my projects

I think I deleted something I wasn't suppose to. I tried clearing space on my hard drive by deleting past events in my imovie folder. Now imovie quits unexpectedly and it won't play my projects. I try play one full screen and I just get a black screen. I also when get out of imovie and go back it won't open my project, but it'll open others?

    Welcome to AD!
That authorization loop is annoying, isn't it? It's happened to quite a few folks.
Here are some steps to try.
    1. Deauthorize, then reauthorize your PC
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1420
Sign out and sign back into the store to authorize all the accounts, even that old one from 2 years ago that you forgot about.
    2. Delete the SC Info folder. The _entire folder_, not just the file. It will get rebuilt the next time you start iTunes. Don't forget to _restart your PC_, as the article says.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1389
    3. Get a free single of the week, which has the latest DRM on it, and play a few seconds of it. This sometimes will present a new terms of service you need to agree to.
Something else that has been suggested, is to delete one of these problem tracks but DO NOT SEND IT TO THE RECYCLE bin. Then re-add it to Itunes and see if it will play. Just do one track to check this out. Nobody has ever posted back to tell me whether this works.
