IMovie 08 - created movie - moved to external - now can't open to edit

Help! Created my first iMovie - need to make an edit to it. Moved it to an external to free up space on my HD. Located the file on the external and tried to drag it back into iMovie but it won't drag. I dragged it successfully back to the Desktop and then tried to drag -won't drag. I then went to iMovie/file/import iMovie HD file and found the file but it was light grey / not highlighted and again, I couldn't import it.
One interesting thing and I don't know if it's relative, but the file is locked for some reason. I don't recall locking it. I click on the bottom right corner of the file box and unlock it - my computer asks for my password and I type it in and it unlocks. But it still won't drag over. AND, when I close the file info box, it re-locks automatically.
I've gotta get access to this movie to edit!
Help?
thanks everyone!!!

Boot = my Mac Harddrive, right?
It's not that it's giving me an error or anything like that. I brought the file back to my desktop. The file "kind" is an "iMovie" with 303 MB. It's there and looks healthy. Why is it not allowing itself to be dragged back in to iMovie? And more curiously, why is it locked? And when i unlock it - put in my password, etc... it locks back up when I close the info window.

  • Moved project and now can't open it in FCP X

In a moment's inattention I moved the project folder to a different location on my Movie Directory. Final Cut couldn't find it so I ppanicked and put it back. Still FCP X cannot find it. I am sure I haven't lost it as it appears in FCP X Project list but no frames are associated with it. Any and all advice gratefully received as always.
    Many thanks
    Richard

FCP is looking for a file with the name CurrentVersion.fcprproject.
Take a look at the location you moved the folder to and see whether it was inadvertently left behind. If not there, look in the folders within your project folder. If not there, try a Spotlight search.

The alert message is just telling you that a specific feature won't use the GPU. This message is innocuous. It only means that the processing of one specific, obsolete feature will use the CPU, not the GPU.
Are you saying that After Effects won't start or open your project?

  • Importing iMovie-created movies back into iMovie

Hi - new here to to the forums; I have had a Mac for less than a year.
I have created many projects in iMovie and exported the files using "share...export movie" creating m4v files. I now want to string several of those exported movies together into one continuous movie. The first way I could easily think of to do that was just to import my final created movies back into an event and piece them together in a project how I want (there may be a better way - I'm open to suggestions).
The problem is that not all of my iMovie-created movies are being recognized for importing by iMovie. I think I have determined the problem, but I don't know how to fix it: the codec for the ones that will import says "H.264, AAC" but the ones that won't import says "H.264, AAC, Text". I have no idea what I did differently to have the codec include "Text" in some but not others, and no idea what to do to fix it.
    Solutions? Thanks in advance...

Welcome to the  Discussion Forums.
If you simply wish to join your movies together, you might be better doing this in Quicktime. However if you want to edit further such as applying transitions/titles etc between the movies you would need to use imovie.
If you have the original projects in imovie, it would be better if you re-exported them as full quality AIC video and used this to assemble a new movie in imovie. If this is not possible you can remove the text tracks that are causing you the import problem using the properties window in Quicktime pro.

Upgraded to 11.3.1 now can't open library. Won't read. I have an older iMac (2008). Message I get is: cannot be read because was created by newer version of iTunes. Would you like to download iTunes now?' ... so I do and it fixes nothing. Same message again. OS is 10.6.8.

Thanks again. The option thing got me further than I've gotten thus far but when I went to choose a library I got that same message.
I do have options. I have 2 iMacs. I can still access my music through 'sharing' and download it onto my newer iMac. Trouble is it doesn't have a CD port and I like to burn. From what I've read about their new Mac portable CD/DVD drive, it's shaky at best. Incidentally, do you know of any drives that work well with Macs and cost less than $89.00?
I've figured out I can download a previous library from my old Mac then upload it from the new one which should put me back in business, but what do I do with the corrupt one that's there now, just trash it? Also, when I do the option key my other choice is Create A New Library. Should I do that and put the good previous library into it?
Thanks a million, I really appreciate your time. I'm an old fogey and computers often mystify me, especially when they lock me out of things for no apparent reason.

  • I have just agreed to software updates on my imac and now can't open my mail.  There is a message saying this version of mail isn't compatible with this latest software.  I have located the updated mail in the applications folder but it won't open. Help!

I have just agreed to software updates on my imac and now can't open my mail.  There is a message saying this version of mail isn't compatible with this latest software.  I have located the updated mail in the applications folder but it won't open. I don't have the original operating software disk.  Does anyone have any suggestions?

Your reply suggests that you have moved Mail to a different location, which (as I said) will prevent it from being properly updated. You cannot use Mail 4.5 with any recent version of Mac OS X. Mac OS X 10.7 (Lion) included Mail 5 and Mac OS X 10.8 (Mountain Lion) includes Mail 6. I'm assuming that you have either Lion or Mountain Lion, but if that is incorrect, you will need to provide that information.
At this point, you will need to reinstall your system. Hold down command-R at startup and reinstall the system right on top of the old one. This should not disturb any of your documents or applications, though you should have backups beforehand in case something goes wrong. And at this point, with your system in an uncertain state (I don't entirely know what you have done to it), something could go wrong.
You will also want to delete the old copy of Mail 4.5, wherever that is. You can't use it.
In the future, do not move any of the preinstalled applications. Leave them where they are.

Hello; I am using Numbers '09 version 2.1 (436). I tried unsuccessfully to upgrade at one point. Now can't open existing documents. Message "The index.xml file is missing". How can I correct this ?
    Thank you
    Tom

I't not iWeb that got damaged but the domain file. The index.xml file is inside the domain.sites file that's located in your Users/Home/Library/Application Support/iWeb folder. Do you have a backup of that file you can revert to?  If so then do it.  Otherwise a long shot but try the following:
    close iWeb.
delete the iWeb preference file, com.apple.iWeb.plist, that resides in your Home/Library/Preferences folder.
go to your Home/Library/Caches/com.apple.iWeb folder and delete its contents.
    launch iWeb and try again.
If that doesn't help continue with:
move the domain file from your Home/Library/Application Support/iWeb folder to the Desktop.
launch iWeb, create a new test site, save the new domain file and close iWeb.
go to the your Home/Library/Application Support/iWeb folder and delete the new domain file.
move your original domain file from the Desktop to the iWeb folder.
    launch iWeb and try again.

    Pogs78,
first things first — buy an external drive to use as a Time Machine backup destination and make a back up. That way, you won’t lose anything which is currently on your MacBook Pro.

i tried to download the latest itunes update, but received an error and now can't open itunes at all. Help?

    Hello bajura007,
Thank you for the details of the issue you are experiencing with installing the latest iTunes update.  I recommend following the steps below:
    Resolution
Follow these steps to resolve the issue:
    Check for .dll files
Go to C:\Program Files (x86)\iTunes and C:\Program Files\iTunes and look for .dll files.
If you find QTMovie.DLL, or any other .dll files, move them to the desktop.
    Reboot your computer.
Note: Depending on your operating system, you may only have one of the listed paths.
    Uninstall and reinstall iTunes
Uninstall iTunes and all of its related components.
Reboot your computer. If you can't uninstall a piece of Apple software, try using the Microsoft Program Install and Uninstall Utility.
    Re-download and reinstall iTunes 11.1.4.
When you get to the step to uninstall iTunes, it is important to uninstall iTunes and the related components in the order listed in the link for that step.

I have Reader ver 9.0. If I receive a file which is created in ver 8.00, how can I open it ver 9.0 ?

All Adobe Reader versions are backwards compatible, so you should be able to open Acrobat 8 and earlier documents with Reader 9.
Do you have a specific problem with a document and Reader 9?  If so, please give more details.

Hi Iv'e downloaded mountain lion but now can't open mail?

Office 2004 Applications Won't Work in Lion
You must have Office 2004 which is a PPC-only suite and will not work in Lion. You need to upgrade to Office 2011 - Mactopia - or you can try the freeware suite, Libre Office, that is functionally similar to Office 2007 for Windows except it works on Lion.
You may want to consider as well:
These two suites are similar to Libre Office but not as current or as well-supported:
    NeoOffice
    Open Office
And, then there is Apple's iWork suite:
Pages - word processing and layout
    Keynote - presentation
    Numbers - spreadsheet
Each can open and save Office compatible files. They may be purchased separately via the Mac App Store for $19.99 each.
(Access to the Mac App Store requires Snow Leopard 10.6.6 or higher and an Apple ID.)
