IMovie 08 good start, but sound editing...

After my first disappointment of iLife 08, I see the possibilities of 08.
Trying to create a good movie, I am wrestling with the audio. How do I lower the volume in one section etc.
There is suggested to open Garageband. How do I edit the soundtrack of an iMovie 08 project in Garageband. On my iLife Garageband videoscore seems to be missing.

To my knowledge, there is only one overall volume control, you cannot control the volume of different section.
Unfortunately, 08 does not have a send to Garageband feature any more. So you will have to export your file manually and then import it into Garageband. There you will find the options, most of which were available in 06, you arel looking for.
Garaband automatically open a videoscore upon import of a movie.

IMovie won't start, but in the end it did

i read the other posts about crashing imovie at the start, but my problem seemed a little different. my imovie started, i saw the app windows, then crashed immediatley. the strange thing was starting it from another account always worked. i then reinstalled, but didn't copy any of the imvie pref files to my new user account, still same prog crash. then i moved all my pictures from the folder "pictures" in /users/xxx/ to another subfolder in the picture folder. before there were like 170 objects in that folder summarizing to 70gb pictures.
i restarted imovie and it worked. i don't know why imovie crashes when there are so many objects in the "pictures" folder but not when they are in a subfolder of that same folder.
anyways, nice work apple for making such great software

i could even narrow it down to my 44gb iphoto library file, whwn i put that in another place, it works of course i don't have my iphoto library in my media browser window.

Argh I'm having the same problem! I always use imovie, and haven't had this prob before... apprantly imovie 11 is full of bugs like this. Anyone know if theres any way of downgrading?

IMovie skips on video but sound is perfect. Very frustrating

I am building a project in iMovie. I import the video from my Sony HDV-SR11. I start cutting clips and putting them in the project. As I check the video to watch the movie I'm building, I notice that the video will "skip" but the audio continues perfectly. I can push the space bar to stop it, restart it and the video will play correctly where it previously was having problems, then it will start skipping somewhere else. It's obviously not a problem with the import as it's "in there" correct but doens't seem to play back properly every time. I've tried Analyzing for Stabilazion and things like that but nothing seems to work. I have an iMac Intel Core 2 Duo 2.16 GHz, 1.5GB Memory DDR2 SDRAM running Mac OS X. I'm not a computer guy so don't know what all that even means. I've got all my movies on a 1tb hard drive to keep from overloading my computer. I've shut down everything so just iMovie is running. It feel slike iMovie is chugging and not fast enough to keep up? Any help/thoughts are appreciated. I've seen a handful of similar posts and nobody ever gets the question answered. I'm not using any "pro" level functions on iMovie...just a normal Joe here trying to make a movie for my family. HELP! Thanks.

I'm spending lots of time and lots of money trying to research this problem. I've read tons of posts and nobody seems to adequately answer the problem. lots of theories but no "this is it." I will keep you updated if I can. I had a "mac pro" come to the house today. Tomorrow they are giving me 4MB of RAM and say that shoudl increase it. The theory is that this version of iMac was before HD cameras were big and now that everyone seems to be using them, the computer is not equipped to handle it so it's slow to process it. They think the RAM will make it better but he said probably still not somethign I'll be thrilled with. Truthfully, as long as it works and the files are stored (for safe keeping) properly and I can burn discs for peopel to see I'm okay with it. Seems like everything else...we've just got to keep up with technology. If anyone has any insights to add, please do. I promise to let you all know what I find as I go through this process.

IMovie clip (overlay) muted but sound still plays

I have a clip in iMovie. It is an overlay. I muted it, but I can still hear the sound in the editor and once exported. It shows as muted, and I even tried detaching and deleting the audio, but it didn't work (in fact it even let me keep detaching and deleting it over again).
I would really appreciate some help :)

I had this problem for a video I did last year, and have not found a workable solution. Then I got the same problem on THIS year's 1.5 hour video I had just finished! Grrrr.
However scrolling through the iMovie Movie Cache folders for all the clips in my movie, and deleteing the cache.plist files, has restored my latest movie and it even published without the dreaded -108 "Could not prepare project" error! Happy day!
So now to try this for my old video and see if I can regenerate it with all the video clips intact.

Is FCE4 a good starter video editing program or should I save up for FCS2??

I'm considering FCS2 down the road but didn't know if FCE4 would be a good start to get into digital editing. I wonder if I would quickly get frustrated with the limitations. I'm running a 2GHz intel core duo w/ 2Gb of RAM. Would FCS2 even run on my system? Thanks for your help.

If you think you are beyond iMovie, then FCE4 is your next step up. It has significantly more capabilities than iMovie, and it has a comparatively higher learning curve, so be prepared for that. The rewards, however, are that you have much greater creative control over your projects.
You did not say what level of experience you have or what kind of video editing you want to do. FCE was designed for working with DV, HDV and AVCHD media; but the interface and all the basic editing features are identical in FCE4 and FCS2, so by learning FCE4 you would be on the right path to 'step up' to FCS sometime in the future.
What 'limitations' do you think you will be frustrated by? For people 'starting out' it's hard to imagine what limitations FCE4 would present ...

Why do I lose sound when I try to make a dvd from imovie to idvd. The sound is all there in iMovie, but when I make my dvd, I have sound for about 3-4 minutes and then its gone.

I have made a 1 hour 30 minute dvd in IMOVIE. The video and the sound are perfect. However, when I make it into a dvd on IDVD, I lose sound after 3 or 4 minutes. Any Suggestions?

I found an article that looks like it applies to that audio issue you're experiencing. Check out the following troubleshooting steps here:
Resolution
Make sure the audio track has not been muted in the timeline.
Switch to timeline view by clicking the clock button in the iMovie window.
There are three checkboxes on the right side of the iMovie window underneath the sound icon. These checkboxes correspond to the video track and two additional audio tracks. Make sure all three tracks are selected. Any deselected tracks are muted.
If you are using iMovie 3 or later, check the "Edit Volume" option to see if it is selected. If so, make sure the volume of the affected video clips is not set to its lowest level, or try deselecting the option to Edit Volume.
See if the volume in iMovie is set to its lowest setting. Directly under the Preview pane in iMovie is a volume slider. Set this slider to maximum volume.
Make sure the computer's audio is not muted.
Quit and reopen iMovie, then check the clip to see if it now plays with audio.
Check to see if any of the video clips you have imported are in the MPEG-1 format. MPEG-1 clips will lose audiowhen you export them as part of your iMovie project.
Quit and reopen iMovie, then reimport the footage from the camera. Play the newly imported footage and see if you now have audio.
If you are using an analog to DV converter instead of a camera, make sure the audio connections are good between your VCR or other analog device and the converter. Check the documentation that came with your converter for more information.
Check /Library/QuickTime/ and ~/Library/QuickTime/ for any third-party plugins. Remove them if present, log out, and log back in. Check to see if the issue persists. If not, check with the manufacturer of the disabled plugin to see if an update is available. Note: The tilde (~) represents your Home directory.
Note: "Apple Intermediate Codec" and "QuickTimeMPEG2" are Apple components. For more information about a particular plugin, select the item in the Finder and choose File > Get Info. Look at the version string of the Get Info window to see if the plugin developer name is listed.

If the file was not originally from iTunes, you'll need to redownload it from it's original source or rerip it from the CD. Files can sometimes go bad and become corrupted. As to how or why that happens, there are a number of ways.
What format are the problematic tracks in? Have you tried converting them to another format in iTunes?

Go to your purchase history, click on "report a problem" and report the problem. Apple will respond and they will likely provide a free re-download.

Startup disc is Macintosh HD. If your HD is getting near full capacity you'll need to offload some files to an external drive or drives.

My MacBook Pro (13-inch, Mid 2010) switches on but internal display remains off/black .There is no start-up sound and the fan starts off normal but after about Five minutes begins to run even faster as if the machine is running a heavy load.It displayed a question mark some time back then a friend borrwed it ,he flashed the system and put windows 7.Then a few days pasted and now it wont display as stated.I have tried to Reset SMC and the Command + P + R + Power but still no response.Please assist?

I think your "friend" caused a problem (or two).
I do not know what "flashed the system" means......
Based on what was done, I would probably erase the HD and restore the system from a backup before the software changes were made.

My PB G4 Turns on and the HD Spins and the Start up sound comes on but the screen is blank and then a flash come on then goes out Please Help

My PB G4 is full charged and when i go to turn it on The HD spins but and the Start up sound Verifys that it came on but the is nothing on the screen untill a flash of white square like appers on the screen for about half a second. I don't Know whats wrong

Also Apple will do a diagnostic fro free, then tell you what it might mean and cost. They will do a repair at a flat rate, and usually take care of any thing that they find wrong, with a 90 day warranty on the repairs. I just had a MBP that needed, a new HDD, logic board, led backlighting, video card, key board, and they needed to replace the logic board a second time. All was done for a flat rate of 4330.. usd. They MBP was a 2008 out of warranty. Much less than replacing the machine, as it is for my kid. Something else to check into.
